Chapter no 9

Keeping 13 (Boys of Tommen #2)

The sound of metal clanging loudly caused me to jerk out of a fitful sleep. A chair scraping against the tiled floor came next. For a few, uncertain moments I wasnโ€™t sure where I was. A part of me felt like I was back in my kitchen, so I kept my eyes clenched shut and braced myself for the impact. When it came in the form of a hand covering mine, I peeked up and found myself staring into a pair of achingly familiar blue eyes.

โ€˜Hi, Shannon.โ€™

Was this real?

Was I imagining this?

The wild, erratic beat of my heart and the heat of his hands on mine assured me that I was very much awake.

Stunned, I looked down to where my hand was taped with wires and wrapped tightly in both of his before returning my gaze to meet his. โ€˜Hi, Johnny.โ€™

โ€˜When did we suddenly switch places?โ€™ Johnny teased. His tone was light but his eyes were dark and stormy. โ€˜Are you trying to steal my thunder, Shannonย like the river?โ€™

I cracked a smile. โ€˜I guess I wanted some of those drugs for myself.โ€™

โ€˜Stay away from those drugs. Theyโ€™ll fuck with your head. โ€˜ He gave me a sad smile before looking around. โ€˜So, are you here on your own?โ€™ A deep frown was etched on his face. โ€˜Alone?โ€™

I shook my head. โ€˜My mother is around here somewhere. She might be outside smoking.โ€™

Johnny leaned forward and opened his mouth to speak, only to stop himself short. Blowing out a breath, he rolled his lips between his teeth and asked, โ€˜So, when are you getting out of here?โ€™

โ€˜Maybe tomorrow,โ€™ I replied with a small smile. โ€˜Or the day after.โ€™

Johnny nodded stiffly and I knew he wanted to say more, but he stopped himself. โ€˜Iโ€™m not supposed to be here,โ€™ he said then, shifting his gaze back to me. โ€˜At least, I donโ€™t think I am.โ€™

โ€˜Iโ€™m glad you are,โ€™ I whispered. Having him here, hearing his voice and seeing his face, settled something deep inside of me. Something shifted into place, an almost relieved sensation fluttered over my skin, soothing something deep inside of me. I felt like I was home. I knew that sounded crazy. It was more than crazy. It was downright insane, but I felt it. It was real, raw, and pushing me to move closer, be closer, keep him.

In this moment, I felt something align itself deep inside of my body, and when it did, the weight I was feeling, the heaviness in my heart and the pressure on my shoulders, just fell away.

โ€˜Me, too,โ€™ he replied gruffly.

โ€˜So, when did you get home?โ€™ I asked, feeling hoarse and off-balance.

โ€˜This evening.โ€™ He raised my hand and pressed a kiss to my knuckles. โ€˜Took me forever to get back to you.โ€™

His words caused a shiver to roll through my body.

โ€˜Iโ€™m glad youโ€™re back to me.โ€™ I knew I was opening myself up to heartache, not to mention the world of pain if he rejected me again, but I had to say it. โ€˜I really missed you, Johnny.โ€™

โ€˜Christ, Shannon, I donโ€™t know what to โ€“โ€™ Johnny exhaled a huge breath, and then proceeded to lift my hand to his mouth. โ€˜Youโ€™re okay,โ€™ he whispered, pressing a kiss to the back of my hand, wires and all. Inhaling deeply, he placed my hand on his cheek and leaned into the touch. โ€˜Youโ€™ll be okay, wonโ€™t you?โ€™

Nodding, I cradled his cheek in my hand and whispered, โ€˜Areย youย okay?โ€™

โ€˜Donโ€™t ask me that.โ€™ His blue eyes burned holes inside of me so deep I felt like I could never be repaired as he said, โ€˜Not when youโ€™re the one lying in here.โ€™

โ€˜Iโ€™m sorry.โ€™

โ€˜Donโ€™t be sorry.โ€™ Clenching his eyes shut, he bowed his head, still clutching my hand to his cheek. โ€˜Iโ€™m the sorry one.โ€™ He released a pained groan and pushed into my touch, rubbing his cheek against my palm. โ€˜I just need you to be okay,โ€™ he croaked out. His lashes were so thick and hooded, I could hardly see the blue hidden beneath them. โ€˜I know I was a complete spanner when I came around after the surgery and Iโ€™m sorry. Iโ€™m so fucking sorry for pushing you away. I was just embarrassed and ashamedโ€ฆand I was petrified of scaring you off, but I should have stopped you from leaving. I should haveย handledย myself better. I should have asked you to stay with me.โ€™ Twisting his face, he pressed a kiss to my palm and whispered, โ€˜I wanted you to stay with me.โ€™

My heart skipped a beat. โ€˜You did?โ€™

โ€˜I always want you to stay with me, Shannon,โ€™ he replied, clearly agitated. โ€˜And if Iโ€™d just manned the fuck up about my feelings and asked you to stay, I could have stopped this from happening โ€“โ€™

โ€˜No, you couldnโ€™t,โ€™ I interrupted him, trembling. โ€˜I would have had to go home at some stage. Staying an extra day or two would have only made things a million times worse.โ€™

โ€˜Worse?โ€™ He clenched his jaw and balked. โ€˜Shannon, look where you are. How can it get anyย worse?โ€™

โ€˜Things can always get worse, Johnny,โ€™ I whispered.

โ€˜So, he didย thisย to you?โ€™ he came straight out and asked me. โ€˜Your Da?โ€™

I opened my mouth to respond, but Johnny got there first.

โ€˜Before you say anything, I want you to know that Joey called me and told me everything I needed to know,โ€™ he said, staring into my eyes. โ€˜Not that I needed him to. I figured it out on my own.โ€™ His hand tightened around mine. โ€˜All those times you came into school black and blue and all fucked up โ€“โ€™ his voice broke off and I watched as a vein in his neck bulged and pulsed. โ€˜All those times you lied to me? It was to protectย him?โ€™

โ€˜I donโ€™t want to talk about it,โ€™ I whispered, falling into my life-long learned pattern of avoidance.

โ€˜No, no, weโ€™re not doing that.โ€™ Johnny stared hard at me, calling me right out on it. โ€˜You donโ€™t get to shut me out, Shannon. You donโ€™t get to do that to me again, because I wonโ€™t go this time. Do you hear me? Iโ€™m here, Iโ€™m in, I care, and Iโ€™m not going the fuck away.โ€™

My mind was reeling, struggling to make sense of what he was saying. Did he meanโ€ฆ? Was heโ€ฆ? Did he wantโ€ฆ? โ€˜You care?โ€™

A pained groan tore from his throat. โ€˜Yeah, I care.โ€™ He leaned closer. โ€˜I care so fucking much I can hardly breathe.โ€™

My breath hitched. โ€˜What do you want to know?โ€™

โ€˜How about you start with telling me whatโ€™s wrong with you,โ€™ he suggested, blue eyes glued to mine. โ€˜Whatโ€™s the damage?โ€™

โ€˜A few cuts and bruises,โ€™ I admitted. โ€˜And a collapsed lung.โ€™

โ€˜Jesus Christ.โ€™ I watched with my heart in my mouth as Johnnyโ€™s face drained of color before returning with blood-red vengeance. โ€˜Fuck.โ€™

Releasing my hand, Johnny leaned back in his chair and pressed the heels of his hands against his forehead, putting space between our bodies and his temper. He didnโ€™t say a word. He just sat there for several moments, breathing deep and hard, obviously wrestling with his emotions.

His dark hair was cocking up in forty different directions and he was sporting several daysโ€™ worth of stubble on his jaw. Unsurprisingly, the disheveled look worked for him. He had on a pair of loose, grey sweatpants and a navy hoodie. The hospital admission band heโ€™d been wearing the last time I saw him was still strapped to his left hand, and a set of metal crutches lay at his feet.

โ€˜You shouldโ€™ve told me the truth,โ€™ he finally said. โ€˜What was happening to you.โ€™ Dropping his hands from his face, he leaned forward and snatched my hand back up. โ€˜I could have helped you.โ€™

โ€˜You couldnโ€™t,โ€™ I breathed. โ€˜And I couldnโ€™t.โ€™

โ€˜No?โ€™ His voice was sad, matching his eyes. โ€˜Why not?โ€™

โ€˜Becauseโ€ฆโ€™ My heart was hammering violently against my ribcage. โ€˜Becauseโ€ฆโ€™

โ€˜Because?โ€™ Johnny offered, voice gentle and coaxing as he shifted closer to rest his elbows on the edge of the mattress. โ€˜Did you think that I wouldnโ€™t believe you?โ€™ He leaned closer, settling his chin on top of our joined hands. โ€˜Because I would. Every single time.โ€™

โ€˜Because heโ€™s an alcoholic,โ€™ I squeezed out, feeling suddenly starved of oxygen. โ€˜And I was trying to keep my family safe.โ€™

โ€˜Safe?โ€™ he continued to probe, luring me into security with his irresistible coaxing, with the promise ofย safety. โ€˜From him?โ€™

I shook my head, eyes wide and full of unspoken fear. โ€˜The foster system.โ€™ My heart felt like it had climbed into my throat, making it hard to get the next part out, โ€˜Been there before.โ€™ Releasing a pained exhale, I held onto his hand, taking comfort in the way he made me feel grounded. โ€˜Donโ€™t want to go back.โ€™

โ€˜When?โ€™

โ€˜When I was little.โ€™ I swallowed deeply, feeling the burn. โ€˜It wasnโ€™tโ€ฆgood.โ€™

Johnny nodded, and the heated interest in his eyes told me that he was committing my words to memory. Everything about this boy was intense and larger than life. He was far too intelligent to insult him with anymore lies or watered-down truths, so I didnโ€™t.

Instead, I went with the truth. โ€˜They donโ€™t want me to talk about it with anyone.โ€™ย And especially not with you.

โ€˜Whoโ€™s them?โ€™

โ€˜My mother,โ€™ I told him, feeling uncertain and wary. โ€˜And Darren.โ€™

Johnnyโ€™s brows creased in confusion. โ€˜Darren, as in the brother who doesnโ€™t live in Cork anymore?โ€™

I nodded. โ€˜Heโ€™s back.โ€™

His brows shot up. โ€˜Since when?โ€™

โ€˜Since this.โ€™ I gestured to myself, feeling embarrassed. โ€˜He says heโ€™s home now, and that heโ€™s going to help Mam with the kids and, ah, and myโ€ฆmy f-father.โ€™ I cringed at the last part โ€“the father part.

โ€˜He says?โ€™ Johnny narrowed his eyes. See, too intuitive for his own good. โ€˜So, you donโ€™t believe him?โ€™

โ€˜I donโ€™t know what I believe anymore.โ€™ I shrugged wearily, too tired to put up a barrier between us. โ€˜A lot of grownups are saying a lot of things, theyโ€™re all talking around me and above me, and Iโ€™m just โ€“โ€™

โ€˜Done with the bullshit?โ€™ he offered, squeezing my hand.

โ€˜Yes.โ€™ I nodded, grateful for his acute interpretation skills. โ€˜Iโ€™m so done with the bullshit, Johnny.โ€™

โ€˜Whereโ€™s your father now?โ€™

I shrugged my shoulders. โ€˜I donโ€™t know.โ€™

โ€˜What do you mean you donโ€™t know?โ€™ His tone was sharp, even outraged. โ€˜He wasnโ€™t arrested?โ€™

โ€˜Heโ€™s missing โ€“ slipped out after it happened and hasnโ€™t been seen since,โ€™ I whispered, feeling panicky at the thought of my father being out there somewhere. โ€˜Darren says he will be found and charged, but Joey isnโ€™t so sure. Nobodyโ€™s telling me anythingโ€ฆwell, except for Joey. Joe reckons that Dadโ€™s probably staying with friends of his in Waterford, keeping his head down until the dust settles and Mam takes himโ€“โ€™ I expelled a defeated breath and mumbled, โ€˜back.โ€™

โ€˜Back?โ€™

Numb, I shrugged. โ€˜Iโ€™m really not supposed to talk about this with โ€“โ€™

โ€˜Itโ€™s me,โ€™ he told me, tipping my chin up with his fingers. Meeting my gaze, he added, โ€˜You can tell me anything, okay?โ€™

โ€˜Iโ€™m scared,โ€™ I confessed, biting down on my bottom lip. โ€˜And I donโ€™t want to go home.โ€™

โ€˜With your Ma?โ€™

I nodded stiffly.

โ€˜Because she let you down,โ€™ he said quietly. โ€˜Because you donโ€™t trust her.โ€™

โ€˜She makes promises but thatโ€™s all they are;ย emptyย promises.โ€™ Shaking, I moved to wrap my arms around myself, only to think better of it and latch on to his warm arm instead. โ€˜Weโ€™re supposed to feelย sorryย for her because of what she went through, because sheโ€™s a victim too, and I know that, I truly do, but I justโ€ฆ I canโ€™t find it in me toย feelย that way.โ€™ The usual fear and uncertainty that consumed me whenever I was in his presence was absent now. I felt stripped down to the bone and laid bare to this boy, and he was still here, still looking at me with the same eyes, still wantingย moreย from me. โ€˜Sheโ€™s getting support now, and the Gardaรญ and Social Services are obviously confident in her ability to parent us โ€“ thatโ€™s why theyโ€™re working with her. Theyโ€™re setting her up with all types of services and counseling.โ€™

โ€˜But you donโ€™t?โ€™ Johnny asked. โ€˜You donโ€™t think she can?โ€™

โ€˜I know she would never hurt us,โ€™ I whispered. โ€˜Not on purpose at least. Sheโ€™s not violent, Johnny, and sheโ€™s not cruel. Sheโ€™s justย weak. Darren keeps saying that we need to have patience and give her a chance, but I justโ€ฆ I canโ€™t get my hopes up.โ€™ Gripping his forearm with both hands, I squeezed. โ€˜Because Iโ€™ve seen this all before. Sheโ€™ll take him back โ€“ I know she will โ€“ and then what? What happens then, huh?โ€™ Shaking my head, I furiously fought with my emotions, blinking away traitorous tears. โ€˜Nothing. Nothing will happen just like always, and Iโ€™m just so done with it all, Johnny.โ€™ I exhaled a ragged breath. โ€˜I want to get out of this town, go far, far away, andย neverย come back.โ€™

โ€˜Can you tell them?โ€™ he asked. โ€˜That you donโ€™t want to go back with her?โ€™

โ€˜And where would I go? What would happen to my little brothers if I did that? Theyย wantย to stay with her.โ€™

โ€˜Are you sure?โ€™

โ€˜Ollie and Sean do. I donโ€™t know about Tadhg, heโ€™s not saying much, and Joeyโ€™s over eighteen so he can legally live wherever he wants.โ€™ I sighed in defeat. โ€˜If I push back on this, if I tell them that I donโ€™t feel safe with her, theyโ€™ll whip us all into care and weโ€™ll be split up.โ€™ My brows furrowed and I cringed before admitting, โ€˜I tell lies like I breathe air. Even to myself. Half of the time, I donโ€™t even know whatโ€™s the truth or a lie. I have to actually think long and hard about it because thatโ€™s all Iโ€™ve known. Iโ€™ve been covering things up for so long that Iโ€™m not even sure ifย Iโ€™mย thinking clearly. And now, Iโ€™m doubting myself because I keep thinking what if Iโ€™m wrong about her? What if Iโ€™m wrong to think badly of her?โ€™

Johnny was silent for a long time, not making a sound, just being there, being with me, sharing the weight, shouldering the pain with silent support. And I think I loved him more for what heย didnโ€™tย say in that moment. He didnโ€™t make the promises he couldnโ€™t keep. He didnโ€™t offer more than he could give. He justย stayed.

Several minutes passed before he spoke again. โ€˜When did it start?โ€™

โ€˜I donโ€™t remember a time when it wasnโ€™t like this,โ€™ I admitted, feeling exposed and helpless.

โ€˜And me?โ€™ Johnny swallowed deeply. โ€˜When did it start because of me?โ€™

โ€˜He was always paranoid,โ€™ I told him, deciding I had nothing left to lose. โ€˜But once that picture of us was published in the paper, he had his own version of proof.โ€™

Johnny dropped his head. โ€˜Fuck, Shannon, that was months ago.โ€™

โ€˜I know,โ€™ I sighed wearily.

โ€˜I made it worse for you,โ€™ he strangled out.

โ€˜You made it bearable,โ€™ I whispered.

โ€˜Where else?โ€™ Two words that seemed to be torn from deep within him. His gaze roamed over me slowly, unabashedly, darkening, until finally settling back on my face. โ€˜Is there more?โ€™ His fingers trailed over my cheek. โ€˜Show me where he hurt you.โ€™

I hesitated to respond, feeling cautious and uncertain.

โ€˜You can trust me,โ€™ he said in a voice so low it was barely audible. โ€˜Iโ€™m not like him, Shannon. I wonโ€™t ever hurt you โ€“ I couldnโ€™t. Not in any shape or form.โ€™

I knew this.

Aside from Joey, Johnny Kavanagh was the only other person I did trust.

It was with this knowledge that I slowly pulled my aching body into a sitting position.

โ€˜Take it easy,โ€™ he coaxed, leaning over to help me sit up. โ€˜You okay?โ€™

โ€˜Yeah.โ€™ Letting my legs dangle off the side of the bed, I sat facing him, and reached for the hem of my pajama blouse I had changed into earlier. Gingerly, I lifted the fabric up to reveal the left side of my black and blue ribcage.

Johnny sucked in a sharp breath at the sight. โ€˜Fucking bastard,โ€™ he snarled and then seemed to check himself because he swallowed down whatever else he was about to say, clenched his jaw, and whispered, โ€˜I need to see everything. Show me everything. I need to see it all.โ€™

So, I did.

I showed him my arms and legs, my neck and thighs, and with every bruise and cut I revealed, I felt a weight lift off my shoulders.

โ€˜And they made a hole here,โ€™ I explained in a shaky voice, clumsily unbuttoning my pajama blouse to reveal the fresh bandage strapped to my chest and side. Shivering, I cupped my tiny breasts and twisted sideways to show him. โ€˜To help me breathe.โ€™

Johnnyโ€™s eyes flicked to the bandage and I watched his entire frame stiffen. He wasnโ€™t looking at me in a s*xual way. No, it was a look of pure horror. โ€˜Jesus Christ.โ€™ He dragged his chair closer to the bed until my legs were nestled between his knees. โ€˜Is it sore?โ€™ Resting one hand on my thigh, he gently grazed the bandage with his free hand. โ€˜Are you in pain?โ€™

Yes.ย โ€˜Iโ€™ll be okay,โ€™ I replied, turning back to face him. โ€˜The doctor told me it will heal in a week or two.โ€™

โ€˜He did this to you because of me โ€“โ€™ pausing, Johnny caught ahold of the fabric on either side of my chest and began to snap the buttons back into place, keeping his eyes on mine the entire time. โ€˜Because of what happened in the changing room?โ€™ When he was finished re-doing my blouse, he shook his head, expression torn. โ€˜Because youโ€™re not supposed to be with me?โ€™

I shrugged helplessly. I couldnโ€™t lie anymore. Not to him, at least. He saw it anyway, the truth in my eyes, and it caused a low, pained groan to tear from his chest. โ€˜Iโ€™m so sorry, Shannon.โ€™ Resting his forehead against my stomach, he wrapped his huge arms around my waist and whispered, โ€˜Iโ€™m so fucking sorry.โ€™

My body was shaking so hard, I was struggling to hold it all back, to keep my feelings buried down, when all I wanted to do was fold into this boy and never come back up for air. Trembling, I cradled his face to my stomach and exhaled a broken sob. โ€˜Itโ€™s not your fault,โ€™ I choked out, feeling the sting of hot, salty tears as they trickled down my cheeks. โ€˜Itโ€™s not. If it wasnโ€™t you, he would have found something else to hate me for. Thatโ€™s the way it is in my family. My father doesnโ€™t need a reason to do the things he does, Johnny. He just needs aย notion.โ€™ Shaking, I trailed my fingers through his hair, forcing myself to keep my touch gentle and not cling to him and beg him to take me away like I so desperately yearned to do. โ€˜Donโ€™t be sad for me.โ€™

โ€˜Sad? Iโ€™m not sad, Shannon. Iโ€™m fucking devastated,โ€™ he strangled out, lifting his head. โ€˜I was positive it was someone at school. Fuck, I was obsessed with figuring this out and I was looking in the wrong direction the entire time.โ€™

โ€˜Johnnyโ€ฆโ€™

โ€˜I drove you back to that house,โ€™ he groaned, distressed. โ€˜I watched you walk into that fucking house and I went home to a warm, safe bed, knowing in my heart something wasnโ€™t right but not opening my mind enough to see it!โ€™ Shaking his head, he released a frustrated growl. โ€˜I am so fucking sorry. You didnโ€™t deserve to have another person let you down.โ€™

โ€˜Itโ€™s okay,โ€™ I croaked out.

โ€˜No, itโ€™s not. Itโ€™sย notย okay.โ€™ He exhaled a heavy sigh and whispered, โ€˜Shannon, did he โ€“โ€™ Johnny blew out a breath and shook his head before trying again. โ€˜Did heโ€ฆโ€™ Flinching, he closed his eyes. โ€˜He hurt you.โ€™ It was a statement, not a question. โ€˜Physically.โ€™ He opened his eyes and looked at me once more. โ€˜Did he do anything else to you?โ€™

โ€˜What do you mean?โ€™

โ€˜I need to know if heโ€ฆโ€™ his voice was pained as he struggled to get the words out. โ€˜Did heโ€ฆ ever make you do things that you didnโ€™t want to do?โ€™

โ€˜Like what?โ€™ I strangled out, panicking.

โ€˜Did he ever touch you?โ€™ the words came out of his mouth in a rush. โ€˜S*xually.โ€™ He closed his eyes as a pained groan tore through him. โ€˜Did he do that to you?โ€™ Opening his eyes, he looked at me, expression torn, and said, โ€˜Did he rape you, baby?โ€™

โ€˜No.โ€™

โ€˜No?โ€™ Relief flooded his eyes for the briefest of moments before doubt poured back in. โ€˜You canโ€™t lie to me, okay? Not about this. I need you to tell me the truth.โ€™

โ€˜He didnโ€™t touch me like that,โ€™ I croaked out, heart bucking wildly in my chest. โ€˜Nothing likeย thatย ever happened to me.โ€™

Johnny stared hard at me for the longest moment before releasing a shaky breath. โ€˜Okay.โ€™ Nodding to himself, he whispered, โ€˜Okay,โ€™ several more times as his shoulders sagged. โ€˜Iโ€™m sorry for asking you that, but Iย hadย to.โ€™

โ€˜Itโ€™s okay.โ€™

โ€˜But I need you to know that youโ€™re not on your own in this. Not anymore.โ€™ His voice was steady and strong now. โ€˜You have me.โ€™

My heart leapt in my chest. โ€˜I have?โ€™

โ€˜Absolutely.โ€™ His brow touched mine then, achingly soft, and his blue eyes bore into mine, silently asking for permission. To do what, I had no clue, but I was willing to say yes to whatever he asked of me. โ€˜Iโ€™m here,โ€™ he whispered, stroking my nose with his. โ€˜And Iโ€™m going nowhere.โ€™

Oh godโ€ฆ

โ€˜Johnny?โ€™ My hands moved of their own accord, knotting in the fabric of his hoodie. โ€˜If youโ€™re going to let me down โ€“โ€™ dropping my head, I closed my eyes and inhaled several shaky breaths before tipping my chin up and opening my eyes, โ€˜then I need you to do it now, okay? Donโ€™t wait until itโ€™s too late, andย pleaseโ€ฆ please donโ€™t make it hurt โ€“โ€™

Johnny silenced me by putting his lips on mine. Stunned, I could do nothing but sag against him, giving him all of my weight and trusting him not to break me.

It was a soft, innocent, almost featherlike peck on the lips, but it was everything in this moment, and it meantย everythingย to me because it was from him. Because for the very first time he kissed meย first.

โ€˜I wonโ€™t,โ€™ Johnny whispered, brows touching, lips gliding against mine as he spoke. โ€˜Iโ€™ll always be careful with you, Shannonย like the river.โ€™ Exhaling a shaky breath, he tucked my hair behind my ears and cupped my face in his hands. โ€˜I promise.โ€™

โ€˜Iโ€™ll be careful with you, too,โ€™ I told him, trembling from head to toe.

He smiled. โ€˜Thatโ€™s good to know, because Iโ€™ve got a feeling you could do some serious damage to my โ€“โ€™

โ€˜Iโ€™m not sure where he is now, heย wasย right behind me, but if he could just have a minute with herโ€ฆ never mind,โ€™ a familiar voice said. โ€˜Iโ€™ve found him.โ€™

โ€˜Shite,โ€™ Johnny mumbled. Releasing my face, he leaned back in his chair and offered a half-hearted salute with his hand. โ€˜Hi, Da.โ€™

โ€˜Glad to see that youโ€™re listening ears are as absent as always, son,โ€™ Mr. Kavanagh replied in a mild tone. โ€˜Shannon.โ€™ He gave me a sad smile. โ€˜Itโ€™s lovely to see you again, although the circumstances arenโ€™t ideal.โ€™

โ€˜Hi, Mr. Kavanagh,โ€™ I whispered, feeling my walls rise up at a rapid pace. I wasnโ€™t sure if it was the sight of Johnnyโ€™s mild-mannered father that caused this reaction or the furious look on my motherโ€™s face as she stood in the doorway beside him.

โ€˜Well,โ€™ Mam strangled out, clearly upset. โ€˜I think heโ€™s had more than a minute.โ€™

โ€˜Mam โ€“โ€™ I began to protest, but Mr. Kavanagh interrupted me.

โ€˜Understood.โ€™ He looked at Johnny and inclined his head. โ€˜Letโ€™s go, son.โ€™

โ€˜What?โ€™ I stared in horror at my mother. โ€˜Why?โ€™

โ€˜Because I said so,โ€™ Mam replied, tone shaky.

โ€˜No.โ€™ I shook my head and looked to Johnny. โ€˜No, you donโ€™t have to go anywhere.โ€™

โ€˜Yes, he does, Shannon,โ€™ Mr. Kavanagh interjected. โ€˜Come on, Johnny.โ€™

Johnny looked how I felt, completely torn, as he looked from his father to me. Several long moments passed in tense silence before Johnny finally nodded in defeat. My heart sank as I watched him retrieve his crutches and climb unsteadily to his feet. โ€˜Iโ€™ll be back, Shannon.โ€™

โ€˜I would prefer it if you didnโ€™t,โ€™ Mam was quick to say. โ€˜Come back, that is. At least for a while. Weโ€™re going through a deeply personal issue, itโ€™s a family matter, and I really donโ€™t feel like itโ€™s appropriate for you to be here.โ€™

My jaw fell open. โ€˜Mam!โ€™

โ€˜Oh no?โ€™ Johnny shot back, not masking the anger in his voice. โ€˜Well, I wouldย preferย if you shoved yourย feelingsย up the highest part of your โ€“โ€™

โ€˜Jonathon!โ€™ Mr. Kavanagh barked. โ€˜Time toย go.โ€™

โ€˜Youโ€™ve done enough damage to this family already,โ€™ Mam snapped, trembling. โ€˜Whether you realize it or not, so donโ€™t show your face around here again. Youโ€™re not welcome.โ€™

โ€˜Mrs. Lynch,โ€™ Mr. Kavanagh interjected calmly. โ€˜I think we all need to calm downโ€“โ€™

โ€˜Keep your son away from my daughter,โ€™ Mam snapped. โ€˜Sheโ€™s sixteen years old and I donโ€™t want her messing around with him. Sheโ€™s in here because of him! Because he wouldnโ€™t stay away. So,ย keep him away. Do you understand me? Keep that boyย awayย from my daughter!โ€™

โ€˜What are youย talkingย about?โ€™ I strangled out, feeling my heart gallop to the point where I felt dizzy. โ€˜He hasnโ€™t done anything wrong.โ€™

โ€˜Iโ€™m coming back to see your daughter,โ€™ Johnny growled, eyes locked on my mother. โ€˜I played by your rules once before and look where it got her. So, you can rest assured that I wonโ€™t be doing that again.โ€™

โ€˜Johnny, letโ€™s go,โ€™ Mr. Kavanagh barked. โ€˜Now.โ€™

โ€˜Jesus Christ, Da!โ€™

โ€˜Now!โ€™

Tearing his heated gaze off my mother, Johnny turned to look at me. Ignoring our parents, he closed the space between us, cupped the back of my head with one hand and leaned down. โ€˜Iโ€™ll be back,โ€™ he whispered before pressing a lingering kiss to my forehead. Straightening up, he looked down at me and winked. โ€˜I promise.โ€™

Wide-eyed, I stared up at him and whispered, โ€˜Iโ€™ll be waiting.โ€™

Johnny turned back to my mother and hissed, โ€˜Iโ€™m watching you.โ€™

โ€˜Come on.โ€™ Mr. Kavanagh sighed wearily and placed a hand on the back of Johnnyโ€™s neck. โ€˜Get out of the room before I take your crutch and beat you with it.โ€™

โ€˜Nice choice of words, Da,โ€™ Johnny groaned, allowing his father to lead him out of the room. โ€˜Real fucking tactful.โ€™

โ€˜Oh Jesus,โ€™ Mr. Kavanagh muttered, turning in the doorway. His face was a deep shade of red as he said, โ€˜My sincerest apologies for the tasteless remark,โ€™ before closing the door behind them.

โ€˜What wasย that?โ€™ Mam asked, tone accusing, eyes narrowed on me.

โ€˜That was Johnny,โ€™ I replied, daring her back with my eyes. โ€˜What wasย that?โ€™ I asked her right back. โ€˜What the hell, Mam? He came to see me and you ran him off.โ€™

โ€˜He had no business being here.โ€™

โ€˜What?โ€™ I gaped at her. โ€˜Heโ€™s myย friend!โ€™

โ€˜And is yourย friendย planning on making a habit of kissing you?โ€™ she demanded. โ€˜In front of your mother?โ€™

God, I hoped so.ย I shrugged noncommittally.

โ€˜Heโ€™s too old for you.โ€™

โ€˜Heโ€™s seventeen,โ€™ I shot back defiantly. โ€˜Iโ€™m sixteen.โ€™

โ€˜I donโ€™t like this, Shannon,โ€™ she muttered, looking concerned. โ€˜Him. I donโ€™t likeย him. Thereโ€™s something about him. Heโ€™s tooโ€ฆheโ€™s tooโ€ฆโ€™

โ€˜Heโ€™s too what, Mam?โ€™

โ€˜Much for you,โ€™ she filled in. โ€˜Heโ€™s too old and too experienced and definitely too arrogant.โ€™

โ€˜Well, heโ€™s not your choice,โ€™ I told her. โ€˜Heโ€™s mine.โ€™

โ€˜Does he know?โ€™ Mam whispered, eyeing me with extreme wariness. โ€˜About our family?โ€™

โ€˜He knows everything,โ€™ I confirmed quietly, feeling a tsunami of misplaced guilt rise up in me. Logic told me I didnโ€™t need to feel bad, but my heart was confused. My heart called me a traitor. โ€˜I had to tell him,โ€™ I choked out, explaining myself. โ€˜He saw the marks.โ€™

โ€˜Jesus, Shannon,โ€™ Mam strangled out. โ€˜No.โ€™ She shook her head. โ€˜No, no, no, this isnโ€™t right.โ€™

โ€˜Look where I am.โ€™ My cheeks burned. โ€˜I couldnโ€™t keep lying to him.โ€™

โ€˜Not that!โ€™ Mam snapped. โ€˜I mean you and him.โ€™ She shook her head again. โ€˜No, youโ€™re vulnerable and heโ€™s taking advantage of a bad situation.โ€™

โ€˜What?โ€™ I gaped at her. โ€˜I canโ€™t believe you just said that.โ€™

โ€˜Are you sleeping with him?โ€™

โ€˜What?โ€™

โ€˜Are you having s*x with that boy?โ€™

โ€˜Oh my god! Youโ€™re so unbelievably disconnected.โ€™ I bit back a scream. โ€˜Darren was right. You needย help.โ€™

โ€˜Heย hurtย you, Shannon,โ€™ Mam choked out. โ€˜He knocked you out โ€“ put you in the hospital.โ€™

โ€˜Accidentally,โ€™ I spat. โ€˜Unlike the man who you left in our lives, who likes to hurt us onย purpose.โ€™ I gestured wildly to myself. โ€˜Iโ€™m in the hospital again, Mam. Are you going to blame this on Johnny, too?โ€™

Mam flinched. โ€˜If he had left you alone in the first place then your father wouldnโ€™t have had a reason to โ€“โ€™

โ€˜Donโ€™t!โ€™ I warned, voice cracking. โ€˜Donโ€™t you dare blame me for what he did to me.โ€™

โ€˜Iโ€™m not,โ€™ she sobbed, crying again. โ€˜Iโ€™m sorryโ€ฆIโ€™m justย terrifiedย for you.โ€™ Hurrying towards me, she sank down on the bed beside me. โ€˜Your father knows about him. What if he tries to find you through him? What if he sees you with him and it makes things worse?โ€™

โ€˜He already knows where we live, Mam,โ€™ I said with a weary sigh. โ€˜If Dad wants to get me, he will.โ€™

โ€˜Shannonโ€ฆโ€™ Mam sobbed loudly. โ€˜Donโ€™t say that.โ€™

โ€˜Itโ€™s the truth,โ€™ I replied, feeling emotionally drained. โ€˜If he wants to hurt us, he doesnโ€™t need to go through my friends to do it. All he has to do is knock on the door and youโ€™ll welcome him in with open arms.โ€™

โ€˜No,โ€™ she sniffled. โ€˜I wonโ€™t do that again.โ€™

โ€˜Weโ€™ll see.โ€™

โ€˜I knew this would happen,โ€™ she whispered, reaching for my hand.

โ€˜You knew what would happen?โ€™ I asked, snatching my hand away.

โ€˜I saw the way he looked at you that day. At the school when I came to pick you up?โ€™ She exhaled a broken sob. โ€˜I knew he was going to be trouble.โ€™

โ€˜Heโ€™s not trouble,โ€™ I urged. โ€˜Heโ€™s a good person, Mam โ€“ a great one. Heโ€™s training to be a professional rugby player, for godโ€™s sake. He already plays for hisย country. Heโ€™s smart and driven and kind. Heโ€™s so kind, Mam. He doesnโ€™t take drugs or mess around like everyone else his age. Heโ€™s not the monster youโ€™ve invented in your head.โ€™

โ€˜Do you think I donโ€™t know what itโ€™s like; to turn the head of a boy like that?โ€™ she asked. โ€˜Your father was all of those things. He wasnโ€™t a bad man when I first knew him. He was wonderful. He was a star in his own right with the hurling. Everyone wanted to know him. He was adored, you know. Ballylagginโ€™s golden boy.โ€™

โ€˜Itโ€™s not the same thing,โ€™ I strangled out, feeling my body grow hot and panicky. โ€˜None ofย thisย is the same.โ€™

โ€˜Itโ€™sย allย the same,โ€™ she shot back brokenly. โ€˜And look at me now, Shannon.โ€™ She waved a hand aimlessly around the room. โ€˜Look where boys like that get girls like us. One mistake is all it takes. One slip up and your life is over. Youโ€™ll be saddled down with more responsibility than you can cope with and heโ€™ll blame you for everything. Heโ€™ll blame you for taking his future from him. For changing the course of his life. For making him a father when heโ€™s still a boy. Repeat my mistakes, Shannon, and that boy will blame you and resent you and break you until thereโ€™s nothing of you left to hurt.โ€™

โ€˜Iโ€™m not you,โ€™ I choked out. โ€˜And heโ€™s not Dad.โ€™

โ€˜Yet,โ€™ she replied sadly. โ€˜Not yet.โ€™

โ€˜Stop talking.โ€™

Mam balked. โ€˜Wh-what?โ€™

โ€˜You donโ€™t get to do this to me,โ€™ I said, shaking. โ€˜You donโ€™t get to scare me away from the oneย goodย thing in my life.โ€™

โ€˜Iโ€™m not trying to scare you, Shannon. Iโ€™m trying to help you,โ€™ she pleaded. โ€˜Trying toย protectย you.โ€™

โ€˜Yeah, from the wrong person.โ€™

โ€˜No.โ€™ She shook her head. โ€˜From making the same mistakes as me.โ€™

โ€˜Well, you asked me earlier if there was a chance Iโ€™d ever forgive you?โ€™ Swallowing deeply, I clutched the edge of the mattress, looked my mother dead in the eyes, and whispered, โ€˜Drive him away and the answer will beย never again.โ€™
