Chapter no 77

Keeping 13 (Boys of Tommen #2)

โ€˜Iโ€™ll call you every day,โ€™ I vowed, as I stood in the middle of Dublin airport with my flight number being called over the intercom. โ€˜And Iโ€™ll send you a million texts.โ€™

โ€˜But it wonโ€™t be the same.โ€™

โ€˜I know, but weโ€™ll make it work,โ€™ I promised.

โ€˜How?โ€™

โ€˜Weโ€™ll figure it out, okay? But I need you to stop crying,โ€™ I begged. โ€˜Please.โ€™

โ€˜I canโ€™t help it. My heart is breaking here.โ€™

โ€˜Iโ€™ll be home soon,โ€™ I coaxed. โ€˜It wonโ€™t be forever.โ€™

โ€˜No โ€“ no! Just no. You canโ€™t leave me, Johnny!โ€™

โ€˜I have to go,โ€™ I groaned. โ€˜Come on, donโ€™t make this harder than it has to be.โ€™

โ€˜You promise this isnโ€™t a forever goodbye?โ€™

โ€˜I promise,โ€™ I urged, patting his back. โ€˜Now, come on, Gibs. Youโ€™re cutting off my air supply here.โ€™

โ€˜Fine.โ€™ Sniffling, he released the death grip he had on my neck and took a step back, tears streaming down his cheeks.

โ€˜I canโ€™t believe youโ€™re actually crying,โ€™ I laughed, and then quickly sobered my features when that only made him cry harder. โ€˜Itโ€™s six weeks, lad.โ€™

โ€˜Theyโ€™re going to snap you up,โ€™ he sniffled, wiping his eyes. โ€˜And Iโ€™ll lose my best friend.โ€™

โ€˜You couldnโ€™t lose me if you wanted to, ya big eejit,โ€™ I grumbled, pulling him back in for a hug. โ€˜Now, pull yourself together,โ€™ I ordered, slapping his back. โ€˜Seanโ€™s watching you.โ€™

โ€˜Uh, yeah.โ€™ Clearing his throat, he took a step back and puffed his chest out. โ€˜Itโ€™s all good,โ€™ he choked out, forcing a smile that looked like he was in physical pain. โ€˜Iโ€™ll be fine,โ€™ he added, voice breaking on the last note. โ€˜Ah, fuck it, this is too hard. Iโ€™m going out to the car.โ€™ Sobbing, he high-fived me and mumbled, โ€˜Best of luck, buddy,โ€™ before striding off through the airport, wailing like a banshee.

โ€˜Jesus,โ€™ I muttered, rubbing my jaw, staring after my best friend. โ€˜The rest of you better not pull that shite on me.โ€™ I turned to stare at my family, and gave my weeping mother a wary look. โ€˜Iโ€™ll be back before the end of summer.โ€™

โ€˜See ya on the telly,โ€™ Tadhg said, fist bumping me. โ€˜I donโ€™t like rugby, but I figure since itโ€™s you, Iโ€™ll watch your games.โ€™

โ€˜Wow.โ€™ I smirked. โ€˜How generous of you.โ€™

He shrugged. โ€˜Meh, weโ€™ll see how it goes. I might switch it off if I get bored.โ€™

โ€˜Bye, Johnny,โ€™ Ollie said then, pushing Tadhg aside to hug my legs. โ€˜Donโ€™t let the airplane crash and explode with you in it, okay?โ€™

Jesus Christโ€ฆ โ€˜Yeah, okay.โ€™ I patted his back. โ€˜Iโ€™ll be sure to tell the pilot to not kill me.โ€™

โ€˜Thanks,โ€™ Ollie replied, mollified, as he skipped away. โ€Cause Iโ€™m going to miss you.โ€™

โ€˜Iโ€™m going to miss you too, lad.โ€™

โ€˜Iโ€™m proud of you, son,โ€™ Dad said as he stepped forward and wrapped his arms around me. โ€˜More than I can say.โ€™

โ€˜Thanks, Da.โ€™

โ€˜I love you, Jonathan โ€“โ€™ his voice cracked and he cleared his throat before adding, โ€˜very much.โ€™

โ€˜I love you, too, Da.โ€™ Slapping him on the back, I took a step back and waited for my next mourner.

โ€˜My baby,โ€™ Mam sobbed, throwing her arms around me. โ€˜My little boy.โ€™

โ€˜Iโ€™m 6โ€™3, Ma,โ€™ I coaxed, squeezing her tightly. โ€˜And eighteen. Iโ€™m a grown man.โ€™

โ€˜I donโ€™t care. Youโ€™ll always be my baby,โ€™ she cried, dragging my face down to smack half a dozen red lipstick kisses to my cheeks. โ€˜Now, you mind yourself over there, ya hear? Donโ€™t be taking any lifts off strangers. And only drink from bottles, not glasses, when youโ€™re out. And donโ€™t be letting any of the older lads on the team lead you astray โ€“โ€™

โ€˜Itโ€™s okay, Ma,โ€™ I soothed, resisting the urge to roll my eyes to the heavens. โ€˜Iโ€™ll be in camp most of the time, so you have nothing to worry about.โ€™

โ€˜Donโ€™t be talking to any strangers, either,โ€™ she added. โ€˜And if they look dodgy and they offer you anything, then you say no. Do you hear me, Jonathon?โ€™

โ€˜Come on, Edel,โ€™ Dad chuckled, physically removing my motherโ€™s arms from my neck. โ€˜Heโ€™ll be fine. You raised him well.โ€™

โ€˜Iโ€™ll see you real soon, okay?โ€™ I said, crouching down to speak to Sean who was tugging on the leg of my tracksuit. โ€˜Iโ€™ll bring you back a big present.โ€™

โ€˜Onny,โ€™ he sobbed, lip wobbling. โ€˜Me want Onny.โ€™

โ€˜Iโ€™ll be back,โ€™ I coaxed, feeling my heart crack in my chest. โ€˜I promise.โ€™ Tipping his chin up, I wiped a tear off his cheek and smiled. โ€˜Are you going to take care of Sookie for me?โ€™

Sniffling, he nodded.

โ€˜Good lad,โ€™ I told him, ruffling his hair. โ€˜Now, no more crying because Iโ€™m going to phone you up, okay? Iโ€™m going to call the house and say โ€˜Dellie, is my Seany there?โ€

He smiled. โ€˜And me say โ€˜my Onny there?โ€

โ€˜Thatโ€™s right.โ€™ Chuckling, I gave him a cuddle and stood back up while I still could and shouldered my carry-on bag. โ€˜Iโ€™ll see you really soon.โ€™

โ€˜Come on, boys.โ€™ Mam sniffled, shepherding the Lynchs like they were her own personal flock of baby lambs. โ€˜Johnโ€™s going to buy us something in the toyshop.โ€™

โ€˜Score,โ€™ Ollie and Tadhg hooted as they barreled after my mother, with Sean and my father trailing behind.

โ€˜Yeah, I really needย youย to not do that,โ€™ I choked out, feeling everything inside of me crack clean open at the sight of her midnight-blue eyes filling up with tears. โ€˜Otherwise, Iโ€™m walking right out of here and coming home with you.โ€™

โ€˜Iโ€™m s-sorry.โ€™ With tears streaming down her cheeks, Shannon hiccupped a small sob and walked straight into my arms. โ€˜Itโ€™s j-just โ€“โ€™

โ€˜I know,โ€™ I strangled out, dropping my bag off my shoulder to wrap her up in my arms. Burying my face in her neck, I inhaled the smell of her, desperately trying to keep my shit together. โ€˜Me too.โ€™

โ€˜I love you,โ€™ she whispered, fingers digging into my neck as she pulled my face down to hers and kissed my lips. โ€˜A crazy fucking amount.โ€™

โ€˜I love you, too โ€“โ€™ my voice cracked and I exhaled a strangled breath before adding, โ€˜Most in the world.โ€™ Cupping her face in my hands, I just stared at her, locking away the image of her face in my mind and then coming close to losing it when I thought about how long it would be until I saw her again. โ€˜Iโ€™m coming home,โ€™ I told her. โ€˜Regardless of what happens.โ€™ Brushing a tear from her face, I kissed her damp cheek. โ€˜Iโ€™m coming back to you, Shannonย like the river.โ€™ Heaving out another ragged breath, I stroked her nose with mine. โ€˜I promise.โ€™

โ€˜You t-take your time,โ€™ she sniffled. โ€˜You g-go and shine, o-okay?โ€™

I nodded sadly. โ€˜Okay.โ€™

โ€˜I want you to s-succeed,โ€™ she continued to say, breaking me with her tears, and putting me back together with her words. โ€˜I want you to k-kick ass, and be the b-best damn outside center this country has ever seen โ€“โ€™ she paused to kiss me. โ€˜But donโ€™t forget that youโ€™ll always be my 13.โ€™ She sniffled and wiped my cheek with her fingers. โ€˜My binding 13.โ€™

I choked out a pained laugh, thinking about that stupid bet. โ€˜You heard about that?โ€™

โ€˜Yeah.โ€™ Half-sobbing/ half-laughing, Shannon smiled and nodded. โ€˜I won.โ€™

โ€˜Hands down.โ€™ I kissed her puffy lips. โ€˜Undisputed.โ€™

โ€˜Now, Iโ€™m keeping 13,โ€™ she told me. โ€˜So come home to me when youโ€™re done, okay?โ€™

โ€˜I will.โ€™
