โCork, Claire?โ Hughie deadpanned, leaning against the side of his car. โOf all the places in the country we could have gone camping, you choseย Cork?โ
Winking, Johnny gave me a knowing smirk and continued to haul bags out of the boot of his brand-spanking new Audi A4 โ courtesy of his parents โ and pass them to Feely. Hughie had been complaining about our camping destination ever since we left the Kavanaghโs house three hours ago, and I was grateful that I got to ride shotgun in Johnnyโs car with him and Feely, and not with the others. Katie was in a mood, Gibsie looked mutinous, and Lizzie was her usual raging-self. Hughie and Claire had been fighting since they walked through the door this morning. The only person who seemed to be himself right now was Feely, and I could never take his measure anyway because he was always so quiet. Something was going on โ something that had nothing to do with where we were staying tonight โ and it was depressing, because today was Johnnyโs birthday. He was leaving on Friday. We had two days left together and our friends were fighting.
โItโs a lovely place,โ Claire said with a heavy sigh. โIt has a river and itโs surrounded by a woodland.โ Grabbing a selection of green, white, and gold colored rugby ball shaped balloons out of the back of Johnnyโs car, she shrugged. โItโs absolutely beautiful here, and I promise weโll have fun.โ Reaching into the back seat, she pulled out two huge red-colored balloons, shaped as the numbersย oneย andย eight. โJust try to be positive.โ
โWell, I think itโs great, Claire,โ Johnny interjected in a calm tone. โI really appreciate all the effort you went to, so thanks a million.โ
โYouโre welcome, Johnny,โ Claire replied, sounding relieved.
โI agree,โ I offered. โThis is the most beautiful place Iโve ever been in my life.โ
โYouโve only been out of Cork once,โ Lizzie drawled. โFor the Dublin match.โ
โTwice,โ I mumbled, red-faced. โI went to Kerry once when I was small.โ
โBut youโve still only been in three places, Shan โโ
โFor now,โ Johnny shot back, giving Lizzie a warning look.
โBut this is stillย Cork, Cap,โ Hughie grumbled.
โWestย Cork,โ Gibsie corrected, and there was a hint of warning in his voice as he took a defensive stance in front of Claire. โAnd fuck right off with your pessimistic attitude,โ he added, tucking a slab of Heineken under his arm. โAt least your sister had the imagination to think this whole trip up. Weโd be sitting in Biddies, downing pints and warding off clingers if it wasnโt for her.โ Turning to Claire, he said, โDonโt you mind him, babe. You did a great job.โ With his free hand, he tugged on her ponytail, forcing her to look up at him. โYou keep that head up,โ he ordered, tipping her chin with his thumb. โDonโt you dare hide that angel face from the world.โ
Claireโs already pink cheeks turned as red as the balloons she was clutching in her hands. โThanks, Gerard.โ
โBut we could have goneย anywhere,โ Hughie complained. โAnd weโre still in Cork.โ
โSay it one more time and Iโll burn your tent with you in it,โ Gibsie snarled, glaring at Hughie. โYou think Iโm messing? Keep upsetting her and see what fucking happens โโ
โWhoa, whoa, whoa,โ Feely interjected, stepping between the boys. โNone of that shit on Capโs birthday.โ Turning to Gibsie, he added, โTone down the testosterone. Youโre peaking on the crazy with the death threats, Gibs.โ
โHughieโs right,โ Lizzie decided to throw her two-cents into the mix. โThis is a disaster.โ
Claireโs eyes filled with tears and she hurried off through the woods in the direction of the camping site, mumbling something about a fly being in her eye.
โOh my fucking god!โ Gibsie roared, clearly livid. โIf any of you have a problem with being here, then get back in your cars andย leave!โ Gesturing behind him to where Claire had hurried off, he added, โThink very carefully about your next move, because if youโre coming, then youโre going to beย happy. Youโre going toย smile,ย and youโre going to have a good bastardย time. Youโre going to eat the cake, youโre going to sing all the happy fucking birthdays, and youโre going toย thankย that girl for spending the last bloody month organizing this trip for your unworthy asses!โ Exhaling heavily, he looked around at us. โWe left our heavily pregnant cat at home for this, and Claireโs anxious enough about Cherub without all of you breathing down her neck, so if you upset her, again, I will legit take leave of my senses and lose the fucking plot.โ Eyes bulging, he added, โDonโt push me, because Iโm already half-way there!โ
โAlright, lad,โ Hughie coaxed, holding his hands up, eyeing Gibsie warily. โYou wonโt hear any more complaints from me.โ
Gibsie nodded stiffly before turning his glare on Lizzie. โAndย you?โ
โFor Claireโs sake, Iโll suck it up,โ Lizzie bit out.
โGood.โ Readjusting the slab of beer in his hands, Gibsie said, โNow, if youโll all excuse me, I need to go and find somewhere to take a shit because Iโve been holding one in since we left Ballylaggin โ and I had a curry last night, so you can only imagine the pressure Iโm under right now.โ
โYou go do that, lad,โ Feely mused, slapping a roll of toilet paper on top of the case of beer in Gibsieโs arms before he hurried off into the bushes. โWeโre all shiny, happy people here.โ
โNow listen up,โ Johnny said, drawing everyoneโs attention to him. โI personally couldnโt give a shite if youโre happy to be here or not. I donโt care if youโre being a pack of spoilt brats because weโre still in Cork. I donโt care if you donโt particularly like one another. I donโt care if youโre in a fight with each other. I donโt even care that itโs my eighteenth. I. Donโt. Care. Not one iota of fucks do I give about any of that crap,โ he growled, glaring at Katie, Hughie, and Lizzie. โIย careย that I have two days left with my girlfriend โย two daysย โ and then Iโm gone for the summer. Weโve had a hard year. Weโve had surgeries and funerals, fires and loss. Weโve seen more hospitals and tears than you could comprehend in your little pea brains, and suffered some serious fucking upheaval. This is our break โ our little time out from all the shite back home, so you are not going to mess this up for me, and youโre definitely not going to mess this up forย her. Are we clear?โ
โAs a whistle,โ Feely replied.
โNotย you,โ Johnny shot back. โThem.โ
โJesus, youโre right,โ Hughie said, looking embarrassed. โIโm sorry, guys.โ
โYeah,โ Katie agreed, red-faced. โWe were being selfish.โ
โMe, too,โ Lizzie sighed. โSorry, Shan, I didnโt even think about what this trip meant for you and Johnny.โ
โA lot,โ Johnny bit out. โIt means a lot for us.โ
They all nodded in understanding.
โThen letโs get this show on the road,โ Feely declared, grabbing an armful of bags. โOnwards and upwards.โ
Ignoring the huffing and puffing around me, I focused my attention on ogling my boyfriend, appreciating the way the blue swimming trunks he was wearing hung low on his indented hips. There was this deep V between his hipbones, a clear sign that he took very good care of his body, and a trail of dark hair from his navel that disappeared beneath the waistband of his shorts. His thighs were just so thick with muscle โ his calves, too. Everything about Johnny was just so tight, and toned, andย huge.
โLike what you see?โ he asked, catching me staring.
I blushed beetroot red. โUh, sorry?โ
Chuckling softly to himself, Johnny closed the boot of his car and grabbed our bags off the ground. โCome on, my little peeping-tom,โ he teased, slinging an arm over my shoulder. โBut donโt feel bad for staring.โ He leaned close to my ear before whispering, โIโve been doing some peeping of my own.โ
โYeah.โ I rolled my eyes. โSure you have.โ
โAre you kidding me? Youโre wearing a white vest and no bra. Youโre lucky I didnโt crash the bleeding car on the way up here, I was staring at you so hard,โ he shot back with a wolfish grin. โI was winding that car window down andย willingย the breeze to get you.โ
โOh my god,โ I laughed, wrapping an arm around him. โYouโre so weird.โ
โYeah, thatโs probably true,โ he agreed with a chuckle. โThis is going to be a good trip, Shan.โ
โYeah.โ I sighed contently. โI think youโre right.โ
โYouโre doing it wrong again!โ Lizzie hissed, shoving at Gibsieโs chest when he attempted to help her and Claire erect their tent. โYouโre so bloody clueless.โ
โDo you see mine and Feelyโs pitched tent over there?โ Gibsie bit out tightly, threading the pole through the fabric. โLooks a lot better than yours, doesnโt it? Because Iย knowย what Iโm doing, so get off my back!โ
โBut the instructions say youโre supposed to do it this way,โ Lizzie continued to argue, waving a sheet of paper in his face. โWould you just put that damn pole down and look at this! Come on, donโt be thick and just look at the instructions!โ
โOh, yeah sure. No problem โโ Grabbing the instructions out of her hands, Gibsie balled the paper up and threw it in the river. โThatโs what I think of your instructions.โ
โWhy did you do that?โ Lizzie demanded, slapping his chest again. โI was trying to show you โโ
โBecause I canโt fuckingย readย them,โ he roared in her face. โAnd I donโt need you to show me anything.โ
โGuys, stop,โ Claire warned, stepping in between them. โLiz, donโt push him.โ
โIt was a picture,โ Lizzie screamed right back at him, stepping around Claire to get up in Gibsieโs face again. โI wasnโt mocking your learning difficulties.โ
โNo, of course you werenโt,โ he shot back with a sneer. โYou were just calling me thick and clueless for the fun of it.โ Bristling, he shook his head and continued threading the pole through the hoops in the fabric of the tent. โItโs all just shits and giggles for you, isnโt it, Liz? You can say whatever the hell you want to anyone and weโre all supposed to justย takeย it because you haveย issues.โ
โDonโt you dare, Gibs,โ Lizzie hissed, eyes narrowed, as she continued to shove at Gibsie, pushing him backwards. โDonโt you fuckingย dareย bring that up!โ
โGuys, come away from the bank,โ Claire ordered in a worried tone. โYouโre going to fall into the river.โ
โWhy not?โ Gibsie demanded, backing away from Lizzie, and moving precariously close to the edge of the water bank. โYou clearly have a huge one with me, so why donโt you just get it off your chest?โ he taunted. โOnce and for all.โ
Panicked, I looked around for Johnny but he was gone back to the carpark to collect the last of our things with Hughie.
โJust stay back,โ Katie whispered in my ear, placing a hand on my shoulder. โThose two are like a volcano thatโs been waiting to erupt for years.โ Sighing, she added, โAnd you donโt need to be near it when it happens, Shan.โ
โWhoa,โ Feely called out, sprinting out of his and Gibsieโs tent and moving towards them. โLetโs just take it back a notch, everyone โโ
โYou know what he did toย her,โ Lizzie snarled. โYou know what he cost me!โ
โIโm notย him!โ Gibsie roared at the top of his lungs, throwing his hands up in the air. โI had nothing to do with that!โ
โWhat the hell is going on?โ Johnny and Hughie demanded in unison as they jogged through the tree line towards the camp. โHey โ stop it, the pair of ye!โ
โGibs, get away from the water โโ Hughie started to call out, but his voice was drowned out by Lizzieโs high-pitched scream.
โHeโs your family!โ Lizzie screamed and then shoved at Gibsieโs chest. โAnd youโre just like him!โ Like a scene from a horror movie, I watched as Lizzie shoved Gibsie again, causing him to tumble over the edge of the bank.
The moment Gibsie fell into the water, all hell broke loose.
โOh my god, heโs drowning!โ
โGet him out!โ
โGibs, hold on, lad!โ
Panicked, I moved to jump in after him, but I couldnโt because I didnโt know how toย swim. With my heart in my mouth, I watched as he completely froze up in the water, eyes wide and full of terror, before he started to sink like a stone. He didnโt even flail or flap around. He justย froze.
Johnny, Hughie, and Feely all ran past me then, jumping into the river after him.
โGerard!โ Claire screamed, rushing towards the bank. โGerard!โ
โIโm sorry,โ Lizzie choked out, looking like she was in shock. โI didnโt mean โโ
โWhy would you do that to him, Lizzie?โ Claire began to scream. And then she did something I never expected her to do. Sheย slappedย Lizzie across the face. โHeโs afraid of water, you heartless bitch,โ Claire continued to scream. โAnd you know he is.โ
Lizzie shook her head, looking like she was in the first stage of shock. โI didnโt mean โ I didnโt โ I swear โโ
โYouโre okay, buddy,โ Hughie coaxed, holding Gibsieโs pale face in between his hands and out of the water, as Johnny swam back towards the bank with his trembling frame slung over his shoulder. โWeโve got you,โ Hughie continued to say in a soothing tone, treading the water, as Feely hauled himself back onto the riverbank. โWeโre right here. Youโre with us, okay? Youโre not back there. Thatโs it โ good job, lad. Just keep nice and calmโฆโ
โHave you got him?โ Johnny demanded, breathing hard, as he thrust Gibsieโs limp body towards Feely who was lying on his stomach, leaning over the edge of the bank, with his arms stretched out to take their friend. โDonโt let him go, Pa โโ
โI have him, Cap,โ Feely replied, grabbing Gibsie under the arms. โI wonโt let you go, buddy.โ
Gibsie looked like a frightened little boy, frozen in shock, as Feely hauled him out of the water and onto the muddy bank.
He collapsed on his hands and knees at the edge, and the sounds that were coming from his throat were gut-wrenching. It was almost like the keening noise of a wounded animal.
โGood, man,โ Feely panted, dropping down beside Gibsie and placing a hand on his back. โShh, youโre safe.โ
Johnny hauled himself out of the water next, followed swiftly by Hugh, and then all three of the boys were kneeling beside Gibsie, whispering words I couldnโt make out in his ear.
Frozen to the spot, I watched as Gibsie scrambled away from the river bank on his hands and knees, not stopping until his back was pressed to the trunk of a nearby tree. He was shaking violently, with his head bowed, and his hands clasped loosely around his knees, clearly wrestling to get his breathing under control.
โItโs okay, Gerard,โ Claire soothed as she knelt in front of him with a towel in her hand. โShhโฆโ With aching tenderness, she gently dabbed at his face and hair. โIโm right here with you.โ Moving onto his shoulders, she gently dried him off with the towel before wrapping it around his shoulders and cupping his pale face in her hands. โDeep breaths.โ Pressing her forehead to his, she stroked his cheeks and whispered, โIโll keep you safe.โ
โIs he okay?โ Katie asked, sounding concerned. โGibs?โ
โHeโd be a lot better if all of youย stoppedย staring at him,โ Claire hissed, shifting her body so that Gibsieโs face was hidden from view from the rest of us. โHeโs not a fucking circus!โ
Whoaโฆ
โGibsie, Iโm sorry,โ Lizzie blurted out, tears streaming down her cheeks, as she rushed towards him. โI swear, I didnโt mean to โโ
โGet away from him!โ Claire snarled, taking a defensive stance in front of a boy who was more than twice her size. โGet back. All of you!โ
โI didnโt mean it,โ Lizzie choked out. โI swear โโ
โJust give it a bleeding rest,โ Johnny growled, climbing to his feet. โYou could haveย killedย him.โ
โI know, and Iโm so sorry!โ Lizzie sobbed, shaking her head. โI didnโt mean it โโ
โYou never mean it,โ Hughie muttered, stalking over to Katie, who was holding a towel out for him. โBut weโre all getting really tired of hearing that excuse, Liz.โ
โI said Iโm sorry โโ
โWell, sorry doesnโt bleeding cut it this time.โ
โYou can chalk that down, Cap.โ
โYou could have killed him! What part of that donโt you get?โ
โGuys, stop,โ I choked out, feeling a huge swell of sympathy for Lizzie, who looked genuinely remorseful โ and seconds away from a nervous breakdown. โShe didnโt mean it.โ
โShe meant it, Shannon!โ Hughie snapped.
โHey โ donโt snap at her,โ Johnny warned, coming to stand in front of me.
โI wasnโt.โ
โYou fucking were!โ
โAlright, lads, just simmer on down,โ Feely interjected. โLizzie knows she was wrong, sheโs clearly sorry, so thereโs no need to start throwing shit at her โ or each other.โ
โBut she โโ Hughie started to object, but Feely cut him off.
โYouโre perfect now, Hugh?โ he asked, arching a brow. โAnd you, Kav?โ He turned to Johnny. โYouโve never lost your head in a fight?โ
โWeโve never tried to drown anyone,โ Hughie shot back, glowering at Lizzie.
โShe didnโt try to drown him,โ Feely stated calmly. โDonโt be so fucking dramatic. She lost her temper and pushed him. He fell in and panicked. We know why. Itโs shit, itโs sucks, it happened, now letโs getย onย with it.โ
โAnd Iโm so sorry,โ Lizzie sobbed.
โThey know,โ Feely replied. Turning to Lizzie, he crooked a finger and said, โCome here.โ
โWh-what?โ
โI said come here,โ he repeated in a no-nonsense tone of voice. โNow.โ Stunned, I watched as Lizzie complied without a word and walked over to him. โNow, you and I are going to go for a walk and let them all cool off,โ Feely said, taking ahold of her hand. โAnd weโre going to come back when everyone here remembers that theyโre not perfect angels.โ
โO-okay.โ Sniffling, Lizzie nodded and let Feely lead her away from the campsite.
โAre you okay?โ I asked, following Johnny as he walked over to our tent and crawled inside. โJohnny?โ
โIโm grand, Shan,โ he replied, digging a towel out of his bag. โIโm just a bit rattled.โ Sinking down on his knees, he toweled off his chest and back before sighing heavily. โThis day is a bleeding disaster.โ
โNot necessarily,โ I offered, scooting onto my knees to watch him clean up.
โTheyโre all fighting,โ he grumbled, dragging the towel through his hair.
โWeโre not,โ I whispered.
He paused and lowered the towel. โTrue.โ
โAnd weโre together,โ I added, smiling.
He smiled back at me. โAnother truth.โ
โWhat happened back there, Johnny?โ I asked then, desperately trying to keep my eyes off his lower half when he slipped his wet swimming trunks off and tossed them out of the opening of our tent. โCan Gibsie not swim?โ
โHeย canย swim,โ Johnny corrected, rummaging around for a clean pair of boxers. โHe just panicked.โ
โWhy?โ
โHis father and sister drowned when he was small,โ Johnny muttered, brows furrowed, as he concentrated on pulling on his jocks. โThey got into trouble out at sea or something like that.โ Shrugging, he added, โHeโs had an issue with water ever since.โ
โOh my god,โ I strangled out, heart cracking clean open in my chest. โWhen did this happen?โ
โHis Holy Communion day, I think? So that would have made him seven?โ Johnny replied, tone hoarse. Giving up on pulling his jocks up his wet legs, he kicked them back off and covered himself with a towel instead. โIt was a long time before I moved down to Cork. Heโs only ever spoken about it once to me, and that was when I was eleven, so itโs all a bit hazy, but I remember him telling me that his parents were going through a shitbomb of a separation at the time. Iโm not sure of the ins and outs of it, but it was really bleeding messy, babe โ affairs galore. Anyway, they all rallied together for the day that was in it and threw a massive joint party for both Gibs and Hughie.โ
โHughie?โ
โWell yeah, it was his communion, too, Shan,โ Johnny explained. โAnd their two families have always been close. They were practically raised together.โ
โOh.โ I nodded. โOkay.โ
โAnyway, his stepdad Keith had spent a fortune to have the party at this flashy hotel by the coast for Gibs,โ Johnny continued, โand his father wanted to outdo him, so he rented a boat and took a bunch of them out on the water.โ
โOh no,โ I croaked out, covering my mouth with my hands, not sure if I wanted to hear the rest of this story.
โThey got into some sort of trouble,โ Johnny said. โI donโt know all of the details, but Gibsie and his sister Bethany got knocked overboard.โ
A sob tore through me. โNo.โ
Johnny sighed sadly. โTheir Da went in for them, but he didnโt come back out.โ Releasing a heavy sigh, he added, โHis sister didnโt either.โ
Oh my god.ย โWhat about Gibsie?โ I strangled out, dabbing at the tears trickling down my cheeks. โHow did he get out?โ
โThatโs the part he wonโt tell me,โ Johnny muttered. โI know it has something to do with the Biggs family โ and maybe even Claire? But I presume one of them swam out and saved him.โ He shrugged again, looking a little helpless. โHe doesnโt talk about it, and I donโt push.โ
โHow old was she?โ
Johnny paused and thought about it for a moment before responding. โGibs was seven, so she would have been two or three?โ
My heart broke. โShe was only a baby?โ
โYeah.โ Johnny exhaled a heavy sigh. โShe would have been about Seanโs age.โ
โOh my god.โ I shook my head, struggling to comprehend what Iโd just heard. โI canโt believe this.โ
โWe all have our secrets,โ Johnny replied quietly. โWeโre all a little fractured, Shan.โ
โCan Gerard and I have your keys?โ Claireโs voice filled my ears seconds before her head popped through the opening of our tent. Without a word, Johnny grabbed his keys off the tent floor and handed them to her. โThanks,โ she replied before disappearing once more.
โDo you think he should be driving after what happened?โ I asked, worried.
Johnny shrugged. โProbably not, but he needs space,โ he told me, brows set in a deep frown as he focused on plucking wet strands of grass off his shin and then tossing them away. โHeโll go for a drive with her, sheโll do whatever she does that brings him back down, and then heโll bounce back again.โ
โClaire?โ
โClaire,โ he confirmed with a nod.
โI think they have secrets,โ I admitted, shifting closer to him.
โI think youโre right,โ Johnny agreed. โBut whatever he needs right now, heโll get that from her.โ Shaking his head, he added, โI canโt give it to him.โ
โWhat about you?โ I asked in a gentle tone. He was trying to put on a brave face, but I saw the concern in his eyes earlier โ the sheer helplessness. โWhat do you need right now?โ
Johnny reached over and pulled me onto his lap. โI have everything I need right here.โ
โDo you think theyโll sort it out?โ I asked then.
โWho โ Claire and Lizzie, or Gibs and Lizzie?โ
โAll of them?โ
Johnny shrugged. โYeah, theyโll be grand. Heโll come back in an hour or two, all smiles and jokes. Heโll brush it under the rug, and that will be that.โ
โYou think?โ
โI know him, Shannon,โ he replied. โThatโs how he copes. Humor is his thing.โ
โI donโt want everyone to be mad at her,โ I whispered. โSheโs going through a lot.โ
โShan โโ
โIโm serious,โ I told him, begging him with my eyes to hear me. โPlease, just donโt hold a grudge over this.โ
โIโm raging over what she did to him,โ he admitted honestly.
โI know,โ I coaxed, straddling his hips. โBut when she comes back with Feely, can you make an effort? For me?โ
He stared hard at me for a long moment before blowing out a breath. โFine.โ
โThanks.โ I smiled. โI know you find Lizzie hard work โ and she is โ but thereโs so much more to her than meets the eye.โ I reached for his hand and squeezed. โSheโs all prickles, but thereโs a good person under that. Sheโs a lot like Joey in ways. She makes it very hard for people to love her, but itโs a defense mechanism. Trust me, I know.โ
โIโll take your word for it,โ Johnny grumbled, not looking impressed.
โSo, youโll be nice to her?โ
โIโll be nice,โ he confirmed grimly. โFor you.โ
โI got you a present,โ I said then, trying to steer the conversation into gentler waters. โItโs really nothing special, but I can give it to you now, if you want?โ
โYou got me a present?โ Johnnyโs brows shot up and he craned his neck back to look at me. โShan, you didnโt have to do that.โ
โItโs your eighteenth birthday,โ I replied. โOf course, I got you a present.โ Rolling off his lap, I held a hand up. โBut fair warning, itโs nothing as amazing as that flashy car your parents bought you.โ
โSheโs sweet, huh?โ he chuckled. โShe purrs like a dream.โ
โUh-huh.โ Entirely uninterested in talking cars with him, I reached into my bag and rummaged around until my fingers found the book inside. โI made it myself,โ I told him, as I pulled out the scrapbook and thrust it into his hands. โAnd if itโs bad, or you donโt like it, you can just throw it away โ I swear I wonโt mind.โ Clasping my hands together on my lap, I shrugged, feeling nervous. โHappy birthday, Johnny.โ
โYou made me a book?โ His voice was deep and gruff as he opened the cover and stared. โOf me?โ
โWell, itโs more of a scrapbook,โ I explained. โDetailing your career from the minis all the way up to here โโ I reached over and flipped to the back page to where I had photocopied his letter of acceptance from the Irish rugby academy and taped it inside. โItโs like an itinerary of your life in rugby.โ I blew out a shaky breath. โIs it okay?โ
โShanโฆโ He shook his head and flicked through page after page of newspaper clippings and photographs of him from the age of six to eighteen. โWhere did you find all this?โ
โYour Mam helped me,โ I told him. โWhen I told her what I wanted to make for you, she took me up to the attic where she has at least thirty boxes of newspapers and trophies and god knows what else.โ
โShe does?โ he asked, not taking his eyes off the book.
โYeah.โ I nodded. โItโs like a shrine to you in that attic. Iโve never seen so much memorabilia belonging to one person in my life.โ Shrugging, I added, โYouโre kind of famous, Johnny Kavanagh.โ
A small smile ghosted his lips and he tapped his finger against the book. โI love this.โ
I sagged in relief. โYou do?โ
Nodding, he closed the book and looked at me. โAnd I love you.โ
โI love you, too,โ I replied, smiling back at him.
โI mean it, Shan.โ His tone was serious; his eyes blazing with heat. โI really do mean it.โ
โI believe you,โ I whispered, heart fluttering with excitement.
โIf I could take you with me, I would,โ he choked out, setting the book back down and pulling me onto his lap once more. โI donโt want to leave you.โ
My heart sank. โYou have to go, Johnny.โ
He wrapped his arms around me and buried his face in my neck. โIโm so sad.โ
โDonโt be sad,โ I begged. โBeย happy.โ
โI am,โ he croaked out. โBut Iโm justโฆI donโt know what Iโm going to do without you. I feel like I just got you, and now I have to leave โย โ His words broke off and he groaned into my neck. โIโm not ready to give it all up.โ
โGive what up?โ I whispered, trailing my fingers through his hair. โHmm?โ
โMy youth,โ he admitted quietly.
โJohnny, youโre still young,โ I coaxed.
โIโm not talking about my age,โ he mumbled. โIโm talking about you โ and those fuckers out there,โ he added, pointing a finger at the tent opening. โAnd your annoying little brothers.โ He shook his head and sighed heavily. โIโm not ready to give it all up, Shan.โ
โYou can do this.โ I forced the words out of my mouth when all I wanted to do was screamย donโt goย instead. But I wouldnโt be selfish with him. He needed to do this, and I needed to support him. โAnd itโs only for the summer.โ
He stiffened for a moment before nodding. โYeah, I know.โ
โDo you want the rest of your present?โ I coaxed, desperate to cheer him up before we both ended up miserable. โHmm?โ
โThereโs more?โ
Smirking, I pushed him onto his back and whipped his towel away. โIf you want more?โ
โOh fuck,โ he growled, nodding in appreciation, as his hands moved to my hips. โI definitely want more.โ
Later that night, everyone seemed to have calmed down and were genuinely enjoying themselves. The tents had been pitched, the cake had been eaten, the arguments had been put to bed, the apologies had been accepted, and the sullen faces had been replaced with loose, drunken smiles โ courtesy of the half dozen slabs of beer and other alcoholic concoctions on offer.
Sitting around a campfire at the edge of the river, with Johnnyโs arms wrapped around me, I listened intently to the banter and jokes that were going ninety. Gibsie and Lizzie had formed a silent truce of sorts and were sitting on either side of Feely, acting like nothing had happened between them earlier. I wasnโt sure what to make of it if I was being honest, but I had to admit that pretending to get along with one another was a lot better than outright war. Claire was sitting on Gibsieโs other side, and Hughie and Katie had just returned from a twenty-minuteย toilet breakย behind a nearby tree, looking all flushed and barely put together.
As I stared into the amber flames, I felt a sudden pang of guilt for feeling so happy. My motherโs face flashed into my mind, followed swiftly by the image of Joeyโs haunted eyes the last time I saw him. The emotions that swept through me were so overwhelming that it caused me to flinch and drop the bottle of beer I had been sipping.
โAnd we have a lightweight,โ Gibsie cheered from across the fire, clearly back to his happy-go-lucky antics. โLittle Shannon,โ he tutted, grinning. โSpilling your drink on the fifth bottle?โ He shook his head, feigning disappointment. โWhat are we going to do with you, huh?โ
Recovering before my grief could get the better of me, I blinked back the sting of tears in my eyes and slapped on a bright smile. โCut me some slack,โ I joked, forcing humor into my voice, as I set my bottle upright on the ground. โItโs my first time drinking.โ
Chuckling, Gibsie turned his attention back to Feely who was playing on his guitar and belting out a verse of Tim OโRiordanโsย The Langer Song. All of our friends were singing along with him, laughing their arses off in the process, but I couldnโt focus on the funny lyrics or the sound of Feelyโs beautiful voice because my mind was stuck on my family.
โWhatโs wrong?โ Johnny whispered in my ear and the smell of alcohol on his breath hit me like a wrecking ball. He was slurring a little from the empty slab of Heineken beside him, and even though he was his usually gentle self, my fatherโs face just wouldnโt leave my mind.
โWhatโs wrong with ya, girl?โ
โWhatโs fucking wrong with you now?โ
โGo to sleep now, Shannon. Just close your eyes and itโll all be better in the morningโฆโ
โShan?โ Johnny asked again, dragging me back from the edge of my depressing thoughts.
โHmm?โ
โWhatโs wrong, babe?โ
โWhat do you mean?โ
โYour body went all funny,โ he slurred, thankfully keeping his voice low enough so that only I could hear him. โYou got stiff and then you went all jumpy-jumpy, and then you laughed, but it wasnโtย yourย laughโฆit was like a โha-ha-ha, Iโm laughing, but Iโm not really laughingโ kind of laugh.โ
Whoaโฆ
โAre you okay?โ he pressed, nuzzling my cheek with his nose. โAre you tired? Do you want to go to bed or something? In my dick tent?โ
โYourย what?โ
โMy pitched tent,โ he slurred.
โNo, Iโm fine.โ
โUh-oh,โ he mumbled. โThatโs a badย wordโฆย Am I in trouble?โ
โNo, itโs just the smell of alcohol,โ I admitted, turning my face so that I could look at him. His eyes were glassy and his cheeks were flushed. He lookedย happy. He looked like everything my fatherย wasnโt,ย but that smell was stillย there.ย Still onย him. โIt was on your breath and you just โโ
โReminded you of him?โ
I blew out a shaky breath and nodded guiltily. โSorry.โ
โIโm not drunk, Shan,โ Johnny slurred and then scrunched his nose up. โOkay, I might be slightly drunk,โ he amended, clearlyย veryย drunk. โBut itโs only โcause itโs my eighteenth.โ
โI know,โ I hurried to soothe him, feeling terrible. โAnd I want you to enjoy yourself, Johnny โโ
โI know Iโm talking a bit funny โ I can hear my own voice and thatโs never a good thingโฆ hang on, what was I saying?โ He shook his head and focused on my face once more. โOh yeah โ that wonโt happen to us.โ He reached up and cupped my cheek. โI will never hurt you, baby,โ he whispered, brushing his nose against mine. โNever ever, ever โ not in a trillion, zillion years.โ
โI know,โ I breathed, heart-racing.
โYouโre my little darling,โ he slurred. โMy whole heartโs inside of ya.โ
My heart hammered in my chest. โJohnnyโฆโ
โYouโll never be her,โ he continued to ramble. โAnd Iโll never be him.โ
โYou promise?โ
He nodded. โI promise a million, billion promises.โ
Shivering, I slowly relaxed against him. โI love you, Johnny Kavanagh.โ
โAnd you know that I love you back, my little, blue river,โ he slurred. โNow, I know Iโm fairly langers, but I could be a thousand percent langers and youโd still be safe with me.โ Smiling loosely, he added, โAnd youโd still be the best thing these eyes have ever seen.โ He pointed at his own eyeballs. โYep, these onesย loveย looking at you. Fuck, now Iโm hard again.โ
โI thought you said you were only slightly drunk?โ I questioned, stifling a giggle and ohย yep, he was definitely hard again. I could feel him growing beneath me.
โShh.โ He pressed his finger against my lips. โYouโre drunk.โ
โNo,โ I laughed, feeling myself loosen up with his playfulness. โYouโreย drunk.โ
โIโm horny,โ he declared gruffly. โAnd thatโs not sensible.โ He shook his head. โNope, thatโs not a good plan, Shan, because Iโm a Johnny with no johnnies.โ
โJohnny!โ
โI know Iโm hard,โ he continued to ramble on. โI can feel my dick trying to break out of my shorts to get to you, but I donโt know exactlyย whereย my dickย isย right now, doย you?โ
โYeah, I can feel it rubbing against me,โ I chuckled. โI promise, itโs still in your pants.โ
โOh, thank god,โ he sighed a huge gasp of relief. โI keep thinking itโs gonna be gone.โ Squirming, he added, โThey put a lot of needles near it, Shan.โ
โI know, baby,โ I soothed, trying not to laugh at him. โItโs terrible.โ
โItย wasย fucking terrible,โ he told me, nodding eagerly. โAll the blood, and the blue balls, and theโฆโ He shrugged and stared down atย myย lap for several beats before groaning loudly. โAh shite โ look, Shan! Itโs definitely gone.โ
โOh, Johnny.โ I shook my head and kissed him. โYouโre a big dope.โ
โHmm.โ He pulled my bottom lip into his mouth and sucked. โSorry,โ he apologized, releasing my lip with a loud pop. โI just wanted a small taste of you.โ
Oh godโฆ
โLads, lads, lads, shut up, will ya? I have a song for ye!โ Gibsie announced as he jerked to his feet, only to fall over the log he had been sitting on and land on his back in a heap. โFeely โ strum me a chord, will ya?โ he called out as he lay on the flat of his back with a cigarette balancing between his lips. โGood man yourself.โ
Everyone screamed with laughter as Gibsie cleared his throat and started to sing his own drunken rendition of Richie Kavanaghโsย My Girlfriends Pussy Catย at the top of his lungs. Smirking, he locked eyes on Claire, and I knew right there and then that he was directing every word to her. He was singing these words at her and he wanted her to know he meant theย oppositeย of the lyrics.
โIโm a great sailor,โ Johnny declared, distracting me from Gibsieโs hilariousย meowย noises. โDid you know that?โ
โNo.โ Smiling, I turned fully in his arms now. โYou like to sail?โ
โIโd love to sail,โ he purred, reaching down to squeeze my ass. โDown your river again.โ
โOh.โ Awareness dawned on me and I blushed bright red. โWell, in that case, youโre an excellent sailor.โ
โI know, right?โ he said with a proud grin. โYears of practice.โ
I scrunched my nose up. โUh, yeahโฆโ
โOops.โ He slapped a hand over his mouth. โI fucked up.โ
โYeah,โ I agreed. โYou kind of did.โ
โShould I get the dick boat out?โ he asked, eyes wide.
โNo, Johnny,โ I laughed, too amused to be put out by his overshare. โNot here.โ
โWell, I only sail one river now,โ he amended with a frown. โThatโs yours โโ He paused to point at me. โIn case you were wondering.โ
โOkay,โ I chuckled. โI got that. Thanks, though.โ
โNo, thankย you,โ he purred before heaving out a loud sigh. โI need a piss.โ
โUh, okay?โ
โI canโt,โ he replied, looking forlorn.
โWhy?โ
โBecause Iโmย hard.โ
โOh my god โโ Chuckling, I wrapped my arms around his neck and cuddled him. โYou make me so happy.โ
โIโm gonna make you proud when Iโm gone,โ he declared, wrapping his arms around me, and tipping half of his bottle of beer down my hoodie in the process. โAnd Iโm gonna keep my dick in my pants.โ
โUh, thanks?โ
โSure, sure,โ he agreed, still slurring. โOh shite, babe, did I make you wet?โ
โUh, just a little bit,โ I confirmed, wincing when the liquid trickled down my back. Slipping my hoodie off, I rolled it into a ball and threw it in the direction of our tent. โThat didnโt go as far as I planned,โ I noted, eyeing my hoodie less than five feet from where we were sitting. โMaybe you should have thrown it for me.โ
โDonโt worry about it,โ Johnny replied encouragingly before downing the last of his bottle and then staring into the rim of the bottle, looking all lonesome and cute when nothing else came out. โLooked like a perfect line out to me.โ
โItย wouldย look that way toย you,โ I chuckled, thoroughly enjoying this version of him now.
โWhere was I?โ Johnny asked, looking confused.
โYou were talking about keeping your dick in your pants when youโre away with the team.โ
โAh, thatโs the one!โ He winked and nodded in approval. โAnd then Iโm gonna make all my big plans with you when I come home.โ
โOh, you have big plans?โ
โBig, big ones,โ he confirmed. โI like kids, do you?โ
โUh, yeah, sure.โ I blinked. โI like kids, Johnny.โ
โThen weโll have some,โ he announced. โIโll do the rugby thing, and youโll do the vet thing, and then weโll settle down and cook up some babies.โ He smiled. โGood talk.โ
โYou think Iโm going to be a vet?โ I asked, completely bypassing the crazy baby talk. โMe? A vet?โ
โOf course,โ he slurred. โYouโre so smart, baby, with your science and your way with all the animals. My dog loves you. Brian loves you. My dick loves you. Fuck, youโll be the s*xiest vet Iโve ever seen.โ
โBut I only told you that once,โ I whispered, thinking back to one of the random conversations we had at night when Johnny slipped into my room. โI canโt believe you remembered that โ and especially in your current state.โ
โYou only ever have to tell me a thing, one time, and it sticks.โ He tapped his temple. โI keep track of all your words right there.โ
โYouโre a brain box,โ I teased. โDo you know that?โ
โI am,โ he agreed. โItโs likeย whoaย in my head all the time.โ
โThatโs because youโre so smart,โ I reassured him. โYouโre always thinking.โ
โHmm.โ
โWhatโs the hmm about?โ
โIโm not smart with you,โ he slurred. โIt goes away when Iโm with you.โ
โIs that bad?โ
โItโs so fucking good,โ he groaned. โI justโฆfuck, I need to stop talking.โ
โNo, keep talking,โ I coaxed, curious. โTell me whatโs going on in that head of yours?โ
โIn my head right now?โ
I nodded. โYeah, right now.โ
โYour tits, your ass, your legs, and your perfect pussy,โ he came right out and said. โI just wanna fuck you, and eat you, and lick you, and touch you, and โฆ Jesus, I donโt even know what else there is to do to you, but I know I wanna do that, too.โ
โJohnny,โ I breathed, trembling.
โMaybe you should get drunk,โ he suggested then. โMaybe that way I wonโt get in too much trouble?โ
โYeah.โ Trembling, I reached for my bottle. โMaybe I should.โ
Hungover didnโt begin to describe the battering my head was taking when I came to the following morning, withered up on the floor of our tent. My stomach was conducting a civil war against my upchuck reflexes and I didnโt dare move a muscle, terrified of who might win. Laying perfectly still, I opened my poor eyes, groaning when the sunshine attacked my ability to see straight.
โIโm dying,โ I whimpered, praying for some salvation, or at the very least a little divine intervention. โDear god, save me.โ
A pained groan came from somewhere close by, and with great effort, I managed to turn my head to the side and find Johnny. He looked as bad as I felt and was squirming in what looked like physical pain. โMake it stop,โ his deep voice begged. Twisting onto his stomach, he face-planted the floor and then groaned loudly. โClose the curtains or something, Shan, fucking anything โ โ Burying his face in his pillow, he pleaded. โJust make the sun stop shining.โ
โI canโt,โ I wailed, feeling terribly sorry for myself. โIโm on the way out here, Johnny.โ
It must have taken great effort from him, but I felt a heavy arm slump over my stomach, and then his fingers were trailing over my flesh in small circles. โAt least weโll go together,โ he coaxed, face still buried in his pillow. โWeโve had a good run of it.โ
โBut Iโm naked,โ I croaked out. โI donโt want to die naked.โ
โWonโt matter when weโre dead,โ he declared, equally naked beside me.
Hungover as I was, I couldnโt resist the urge to sweep my gaze over his naked form, eyes lingering on his bare ass. โDid we, uhโฆโ Shivering, I folded my arms across my bare breasts. โDid we do it last night?โ
โDo what?โ
โHaveย s*x?โ
โNo s*x.โ Giving my hip a little squeeze, he buried his face back into his pillow, and star-fished the floor. โJust sleep.โ
Unconvinced, I peeked around for the evidence of a foil wrapper, only to panic when I didnโt find one.
โBut weโre naked,โ I croaked out. I tentatively shifted my hips and felt that familiar ache.
โI know,โ he mumbled. โNow sleep, Shan.ย Please.ย I have to drive us back home in a few hours and Iโm trying to sweat the Jameson out of me, baby.โ
โOh, okay.โ Squirming from the ache between my legs, I mirrored his actions and carefully rolled onto my stomach, watching him sleep.
My silence lasted all of seven minutes before I reached over and poked the ridiculously large bicep flexed around a pillow. โHey โ are you sure we didnโt have s*x?โ
Groaning under his breath, Johnny attempted a sleepy nod. โHundred percent.โ
โI feel like somethingโs been inside of me, Johnny,โ I squeezed out, shivering as my body drowned in the feeling of being thoroughly satiated. โMaybe not full on penetration,โ I amended. Tingling ripples of pleasure and excitement darted through me at the thought. โBut there was definitely somethingย insideย me.โ
โYeah,โ Johnny replied, peering up at me through one squinted blue eye. He held up his hand and twiddled his fingers. โThese.โ
โOh.โ Heat crept up my body. โOkay.โ
โNight, love you,โ he mumbled, closing his eyes once more.
โBut itโs morning.โ
โShhโฆsleep.โ
Feeling needy, I braced myself and slowly wiggled over to his body. He was burning up, his skin hot and welcoming. Snuggling in to his side, I stroked my cheek against his shoulder.
โIโm trying to die in peace here, Shannon,โ he groaned. โAnd youโre giving my dick notions.โ
โIโm cold.โ Shivering, I sidled closer to his big body that resembled a furnace 24/7.
โItโs like thirty degrees outside,โ he noted, lifting himself up on his elbows to look at me. โYou canโt be cold.โ
โI am,โ I argued, shivering. โIโm perished.โ
Rolling onto his side, Johnny gave my body a slow appraisal from head to toe. โAh, shite,โ he grumbled, throwing a thigh over mine and dropping his head on my chest. โThatโs my plan for the day gone out the window.โ
โWhat?โ I whispered, greedily welcoming his warmth by wrapping my arms around him and holding him close. โWhatโs wrong?โ
He clamped a hand on my hip and exhaled a contented sigh. โI canโt be getting notions of dying when youโre looking like that.โ
