We were putting the finishing touches to the treehouse when Ollieโs voice echoed up from the ground. โWhoa,โ he gasped, staring up at the four of us with a look of awe on his face. โThatโs the biggest treehouse Iโve ever seen!โ He shook his head. โIn my whole entire life.โ
โYou like it?โ I called back to him, leaning over the railing weโd added to the edge. โPretty nice, huh?โ
โWhich one is he?โ Feely whispered.
โOllie,โ I replied quietly.
โHeโs my favorite,โ Gibsie announced.
โHey, Ollie,โ Feely said, waving down at him.
โYeah, hey, lad,โ Hughie added, popping up.
โHi.โ He waved at the lads as his gaze trailed over the treehouse. โItโs so cool, Johnny!โ A huge smile spread across his face. โWhat are you guys doing up there?โ
โWeโre having a secret meeting,โ Gibsie piped up. โOver-seventeens only, kid.โ
Ollieโs face fell and I shook my head before turning to glare at Gibsie who was balmed-out on his back in the treehouse, smoking his brains out. โYou bleeding eejit.โ Turning back to Ollie, I smiled down at him and said, โDonโt mind him, Ollie. We made this for you and your brothers.โ
โYou did?โ His eyes widened. โReally?โ
I nodded. โYeah, so go and get Tadhg.โ
โWhoa!โ Spinning on his heels, Ollie darted back through the field towards the house, screaming, โTadhg!โ at the top of his lungs. โYou gotta come see this!โ
โI donโt want to give it up,โ Gibsie groaned, exhaling a cloud of smoke. โI love this treehouse.โ
โYou are the biggest child Iโve ever met that never grew up,โ Feely muttered.
โBut itโs so nice,โ Gibsie huffed. โAnd now we have to hand it over.โ
โIโm sure theyโll let you visit,โ I shot back, rolling my eyes. โNow put that cigarette out before they come back.โ
Less than three minutes later, Tadhg and Ollie came running through the field back to us.
โHoly shit!โ Tadhg choked out when he reached the tree. His puffy eyes were wide in astonishment. โYou guys seriously built this?โ
โI told you,โ Ollie said proudly. โThey made it for us.โ
โYou did?โ Tadhg frowned. โWhy?โ
โBecause we were feeling generous,โ Gibsie drawled, climbing down the ladder. โAnd I expect free access whenever I want.โ
โIt must be sturdy,โ Tadhg mused, casting a sideways glance at Gibsie. โTo hold your weight.โ
โIโm not fat!โ Gibsie huffed. โIโm a flanker! Iโm supposed to be stocky. Iโm all muscle. Iโll show ya โโ
โJesus,โ I muttered, climbing down after him. โKeep your clothes on, Gibsie.โ
โFlanker,โ Tadhg snickered, darting up the ladder once Feely and Hughie had climbed down. โMore like wanker.โ
โOh now, heโsย myย favorite,โ Hughie laughed.
โIโm going to lose my shit with that kid,โ Gibsie grumbled as he chased Tadhg back up the ladder. โYouโre twelve,โ he panted, climbing into the treehouse. โYouโre supposed to be a sweet child, not a little monster.โ
โIf I was sweet, you might try and eat me,โ Tadhg shot back. โAnd youโve clearly eaten enough.โ
โFor the last time, I am not fat,โ Gibsie growled. โIโm big boned โ thereโs a huge difference.โ
โHuge,โ Tadhg snickered, clearly enjoying the banter. โYouโve got that right.โ
โI canโt deal with this kid,โ Gibsie growled.
โItโs okay, Gibsie,โ Ollie said, joining them in the treehouse. โI donโt think youโre fat.โ
โThank you, Ollie,โ Gibsie sniffed. โItโs nice to know thereโs one nice kid around the place.โ
โThatโs โcause Iโm sweet,โ Ollie replied innocently. โDellie says so.โ
โWill you lads be alright out here by yourselves if we head inside for a bit?โ I called up to them.
โOh, Iโm never coming down,โ Ollie shouted back. โSo Iโm super okay.โ
โHey, Johnny?โ Tadhg called out, poking his head over the railing.
โYeah?โ
โUh, thanks.โ His cheeks reddened. โFor this.โ
โYouโre welcome.โ
โAnd, uh, for the other part, too,โ he croaked out, brown eyes trained on mine. โThe coming to get us part.โ
โYeah.โ I swallowed deeply and nodded. โNo problem.โ
โTadhg, look,โ Ollie squealed and Tadhg disappeared from sight. โItโs a tennis scope.โ
โA what?โ
โA tennis scope.โ
โTelescope,โ I heard Tadhg sigh. โGibsie, give him a turn, will ya? Heโs only nine.โ
โCome on, Gibs,โ I chuckled, scratching the back of my head. โIโll make you a sandwich.โ
โFine, but I want it toastedย andย a packet of crisps,โ Gibsie grumbled. โOh, hold up โ we forgot our tools.โ
โI swear heโs stuck in his seven-year-old mind,โ Hughie mused.
โYouโre probably right,โ Feely agreed. โHe hasnโt changed much since we made our Communion.โ
โTimber โโ
Bang.
โAh, Jesus Christ!โ I roared out, clutching the back of my head as pain ricocheted through my scalp. Glancing around me, I spotted the hammer on the grass and blanched. โWhat the fuck, Gibs?โ I snarled, glaring up at the big bastard who was peeking over the railing. โTimber? Whatโs that supposed to mean?โ
โItโs a code,โ Gibsie called back sheepishly.
โA code?โ I demanded. โCode for what? Trying to split my head open?โ
โTimber is a valid warning word to get out of the way, Johnny,โ he countered. โYouโre the academic. You should know this.โ
โSo is fore,โ I spat. โFore is a code.โ
Gibsie shrugged. โForeโs a golfing reference.โ
โIโm more of a golfer than a fucking woodcutter,โ I hissed, still clutching my head. โJesus!โ
โI was throwing a hammer, not a golf club,โ he defended, climbing down the ladder to join us. โAh, balls, lad,โ he muttered, heading straight for me. โYour headโs all gooey and bleeding.โ
โNo shit, Sherlock,โ I snapped. โBecause you threw a bleedingย hammerย at me.โ
โTechnically, I threw a hammerย onย you, not at you โ and I did call timber,โ he reminded me as he poked at my scalp. โItโs not my fault you canโt read signals โ I think you might need a stitch or seven.โ
โJust give me your t-shirt,โ I growled. โAnd youโre banned from the treehouse and handling tools. Do you hear me? No more.โ
โAre you okay, Johnny?โ Ollie called out, sounding worried.
Ah shite.
I couldnโt even kill him in peace.
โIโm grand, lads.โ Snatching Gibsieโs t-shirt out of his hands, I pressed it to my head and forced a smile when all I wanted to do was throttle my best friend. โMake sure you both come back to the house before it gets too dark,โ I added, before turning my back on the treehouse and mouthing, โYou better run, bitch,โย to Gibsie who was already legging it in the direction of the house.
โDonโt hurt him too much, Cap,โ Feely called out as I broke into a run after Gibsie.
โDonโt listen to him, Cap,โ Hughie chuckled. โTorture him.โ
โLook โ itโs like a Hippo trying to outrun a Cheetah,โ I heard Tadhg and Ollie laugh, and even though I was mad as hell and had blood dripping down the back of my neck, I had to admit, it was a lovely sound.
โGerard, you donโt throw hammers at Johnny,โ Mam repeated for the tenth time when we walked back into the kitchen, having just returned from the out-of-hours doctor for a quick stitch-and-go.
โFine,โ Gibsie huffed, folding his arms across his chest. โBut you remind him right back of what heโs not supposed to do to me.โ
โOh, lord, save me from the stupidity of teenage boys.โ Setting her handbag down on the island, Mam ushered us both onto the stools and sighed heavily. โJohnny, you donโt smother Gerard with your bloodied t-shirt and trip him up โ you know he gets squeamish around bodily fluids.โ
โMyย bloodied t-shirt,โ Gibsie corrected, narrowing his eyes at me. โIt was my bloodied t-shirt to matchย myย broken chin.โ
โYou didnโt break your chin,โ I scoffed. โYou grazed it.โ
His mouth fell open. โI have a gaping hole in myย face!โ
โYeah.โ I glared back at him. โTo match the gaping hole in myย head!โ
โI haveย fourย stitches,โ he growled, pointing to his bandaged chin.
I pointed to my bandaged head. โI haveย six!โ
โThe point is, you shouldnโt be giving each other stitches,โ Mam snapped. โYouโre both going on eighteen years of age. Youโre getting a bit old in the tooth for this carrying on.โ
โOh, Jesus,โ Dad said when he walked into the kitchen with Sean on his hip. โWhat did you two do now?โ
โWe had a small miscommunication,โ Gibsie replied, elbowing me in the ribs. โA little crossing of wires.โ
โYeah,โ I agreed, elbowing him back. โBut itโs balanced out now.โ My gaze landed on Sean in his brand-new Bob the Builder pajama set and I winked at him. โHowโs my big man?โ
He grinned back at me. โOnny.โ Wriggling down from my fatherโs arms, he scooted across the kitchen, heading straight for me with his little hands up. โOw-ow, Onny.โ
โYeah.โ I nodded and bent down to pick him up. โThatโs right, but Iโm okay.โ Setting him down on the counter in front of me, I poked his belly and snickered when he howled laughing. โYouโve got a big belly,โ I chuckled, poking him again and grinning like a dope when he squealed in delight. โIs this Santaโs belly? Hmm? Give me that belly โโ
โYou really like this one, donโt you?โ Gibsie mused, watching as I lowered my head for Sean to investigate my bandage. โYouโre going soft, Kav.โ
โLook at him,โ I defended, pointing at my girlfriendโs baby brother. Iโd spent a lot of time with this kid since they all moved in. Sean always seemed the happiest to see me, and he was too bleeding heartbreaking to ignore. I knew it wasnโt right to favor children, and Iโd never admit it aloud, but if I had my pick of the bunch, it would be this one every single time. And maybe Ollie. Screw it, I liked them all, but this one? He was something else. โLook at those big eyes,โ I ordered, pointing at Seanโs big, chocolate-button eyes. โHeโs like a puppy. How could you not love that face?โ
โHeโs a person, not a puppy,โ Gibsie laughed.
โHeโs my puppy, arenโt you, buddy?โ
Sean nodded happily. โOnny.โ He smashed my cheeks in his hands. โMy Onny.โ
โYour Onny?โ Gibsie teased. โNo, no, I donโt think so.โ Draping an arm over my shoulders, he said, โThis is my Onny.โ
Seanโs face reddened. โMy Onny.โ Clutching my face in his tiny hands, he pulled me closer. โMy Onny.โ
โChrist, lad, youโre like the baby whisperer,โ Gibsie chuckled, sounding impressed. โHe was barely communicating the last time I saw him, and now heโs all over you.โ Frowning, he asked, โIs it just the Jโs he has trouble with? Is it a speech impediment or something?โ
โHe doesnโt have any trouble,โ I replied in a baby voice, pulling a face at Sean. โYouโre just taking your time, arenโt ya, buddy?โ
Sean nodded happily and I knew he didnโt have a notion of what I was talking about, but he was so fucking cute that he made me laugh anyway.
โSee that bold boy, Sean?โ I teased, pointing to Gibsie. โWeโre going to get him, arenโt we? What do we say when we chase people?โ
โOof.โ Narrowing his eyes at Gibsie, he lunged forward and barked, โOof.โ
โOh my god!โ Clutching his stomach, Gibsie fell off the stool from laughing. โYou did not teach the baby to bark!โ
โOnny oof,โ Sean barked. โOnny shite oof.โ
โJohnny!โ Mam gasped. โYou did not teach the baby to curse.โ
โAh, shite,โ I groaned.
โAh, shite, Onny,โ Sean mimicked, rubbing my head. โAh, shite.โ
โAnd thatโs enough play time with Johnny,โ Dad chuckled, sweeping Sean up in his arms once more. โCome on, little man.โ Grabbing a beaker of milk off the countertop, Dad strolled back down the hallway. โLetโs have a story before bed.โ
โDonโt read him that book,โ I called after him.
โOh, donโt worry, love,โ Mam coaxed. โI burned that book years ago for you.โ
โYouโre not still freaked out over that book, are you?โ Gibsie snickered. โItโs beenย years.โ
โIโm okay,โ I growled. โBut heโs only small.โ
โJohnny, lad, no one else thinks the way you do,โ he chuckled. โWe donโt all overanalyze everything like you do. Itโs a storybook about a chicken.โ
โIt was legitimately terrifying,โ I defended. โI couldnโt sleep for weeks.โ
โYou couldnโt sleep because you couldnโt turn that brain of yours off,โ he shot back. โYouโre still the exact same now.โ
โHeโs right,โ Mam chimed in. โYouโre a bit of a worrier, love.โ
โYeah,โ I muttered, deciding not to bother arguing when they were spot on. โFair point.โ
โWell, Iโm thinking I should hit the road and let you get some sleep before the big day,โ Gibsie said, giving me a meaningful look. โDo I need to come and pick you up in the morning and drag your ass over there, or are you going to be a big boy and drive yourself?โ
โIโll drive,โ I told him. โThanks anyway, lad.โ
โOh, sweet Jesus, the trials,โ Mam gasped, slapping a hand over her mouth. โI completely forgot.โ
โItโs alright, Mammy K,โ Gibsie said. โIโve got your boyโs back.โ He gave me a scathing look. โBe up or Iโm coming for you.โ
โIโll be there,โ I replied, voice thick and gruff. โIโll see this through.โ
โDamn straight you will,โ Gibsie replied, nodding. โCall me as soon as youโre done.โ Turning to my mother, he pressed a kiss to her cheek before swiping a sandwich off the tray she was holding and sauntering out the back door. โTootles.โ
โJohnny,โ Mam whispered when the back door closed behind him. โI am so sorry, love.โ Hurrying over to me, she pulled out the stool Gibsie had vacated and sat down next to me. โI donโt know how I forgot about the coaches coming down tomorrow.โ
โMa, itโs okay,โ I muttered. โItโs not a big deal.โ
โItโs a huge deal,โ she corrected, placing her hand on my arm. โYouโve worked so hard to come back from injury. Your whole lifeโฆ oh, Johnny, baby, Iโm so sorry.โ
โYouโve had a lot on your mind,โ I reassured her. โAnd a lot of kids to be minding. Itโs just another trial. Donโt even worry about it.โ
โBut youโre my son,โ she choked out. โI should have been supporting you, and helping you prepare for this.โ
โMa, we have six people staying in this house that just lost their home and both of their parents,โ I told her. โIโm not going to begrudge loaning them mine.โ
โOh, pet.โ Mam smiled sadly. โI just want you to know that youโre still my number one.โ
โI know.โ I smirked. โAnd you should know that I donโt need that kind of reassurance.โ I patted her hand. โI know who I am, and I know who I belong to.โ I shrugged. โIโm not worried, Ma, so donโt worry about me.โ
โDo you want me to come with you in the morning?โ she offered, squeezing my hand. โI can wait in the car, or sit in the stands โโ
โShow up to training with my mother?โ I shook my head and laughed. โCome on, Ma, what are you trying to do to me? The coaches would never let me live it down.โ
โWhat about Dad then?โ she offered, tone hopeful.
โNo.โ I shook my head. โNo Da. No you, and no Gibsie. Iโll go by myself.โ
โOh, Johnny, are you sure?โ
โHundred percent.โ
โFair enough,โ she sighed. โBut Iโll be thinking about you the entire time โ and Iโll light a candle for you, pet.โ
โTry not to worry about it,โ I replied. โItโs just another day.โ
โHow about I do the worrying for the both of us?โ she offered, smiling. โYou just concentrate on blowing their socks off.โ
โYeah.โ I pushed down my nerves and forced a smile. โIโll do that.โ
โOh, you will,โ she replied. โYou always do, love.โ
โHowโs Shannon?โ I asked then, forcing the question out of my mouth, the one I was both desperate to ask and terrified to know the answer to. โDid she come out of her room today?โ
โShe came downstairs for a little while to visit with Claire and Lizzie.โ Mam sighed heavily. โBut she went back up to Joey shortly after. Aoifeโs still up there, too. I told her that she can stay as long as she wants. She seems to be making more progress with him than anyone else.โ
I nodded, slowly digesting everything. โAnd Darren?โ
โHeโs dropping their Nanny home,โ Mam explained. โSheโs such a lovely lady, Johnny. My heart goes out to the poor crater. Marie was her granddaughter, you know. She raised her from a small child.โ
โIs she eating yet?โ I asked, unable to concentrate on anything other than my girlfriend. โDid she have anything today?โ
โYes, she had some soup with the girls,โ Mam replied.
โThank Christ,โ I choked out, shoulders sagging in relief. โSheโs after losing a lot of weight, Ma.โ
โSheโll be okay, Johnny, love,โ Mam coaxed. โShe just needs some time to take it all on board. Itโs a lot to process.โ
I knew that, but it wasnโt easy watching her from a distance.
Mam chewed on her lip before saying, โI think itโs more that sheโs scared to let Joey out of her sight for fear he runs than anything else.โ
โItโs okay, Ma,โ I muttered.
โI donโt want you feeling like youโre being left out,โ Mam hurried to console. โSheโs not mad at you, pet. Sheโs just grieving.โ
โI know.โ
โAre youย sureย you know?โ
No.ย โYeah.โ Pushing back my stool, I stood up and stretched my arms over my head. โIโm going hit the sack. Try and turn my brain off for an hour.โ I pressed a kiss to her head before heading for the hallway โNight, Ma.โ
โGoodnight, Johnny, love,โ she called after me.
Closing the kitchen door behind me, I trailed down the hall and took the stairs three at a time, listening to the sound of voices coming from all directions. Tadhg and Ollie were back from the treehouse and I could hear them banging around in one of the spare bedrooms. It was so unusual to hear anything other than my own thoughts in this place that I took a moment to just stand in the landing and listen to the brothers arguing over sweets before making my way down to my room, forcing my legs to walk past the room I knewย sheย was in.
Slipping inside my room, I closed the door and pressed my forehead against the frame. Leaving the light off, I forced myself to breathe deep and slow. My mind was reeling, my thoughts a jumbled mess, as I tried to focus on what was coming in the morning โ what I knew I had to show up to both physically and mentally. Problem was, my mind was stuck on the girl in the room down the hall. The one I couldnโt fix. The one who owned me. What was I thinking going tomorrow? It wasnโt like I could leave now. How could I leave her? Jesus Christ, I felt like I was going to explodeโฆ
โHi, Johnny.โ
Startled at the sound of Shannonโs voice, I spun around to find her sitting on the edge of my bed in the darkness. The moonlight pouring in from my bedroom window illuminated her pale face as she looked up at me with the loneliest expression Iโd ever seen. โHi, Shannon,โ I replied, quickly clearing my throat when the words came out all thick and gruff. Wary, I remained exactly where I was, unsure of what she wanted me to do. โHow are you feeling?โ
Her long hair was loose and resting over one shoulder, and she was dressed in a pajama set from one of the countless bags of new clothes that were filling up the spare room. The ladsโ mothers had been dropping things over to the house for days now, and I knew from one glance at the pink, glittery string top and matching shorts she was wearing, that Claire had a hand in purchasing it.
โI, uhโฆโ She glanced down at her clasped hands and blew out a shaky breath before retraining her gaze on my face. โOh god, Johnny, your head,โ she choked out. Her voice was panicked, her eyes wide. โWhat happened?โ
โWell, it all started back in the Spring of 1988, when Gerard Gibson entered the world. Ten years later, he was thrown into my life and it all went to shite from there,โ I chuckled and then mentally kicked my own ass for cracking jokes. โSorry.โ
โItโs okay,โ she whispered, tugging on the hem of her vest nervously. โI miss you.โ
My heart cracked in my chest and my legs were moving before my brain had a chance to catch up. โIโm right here, Shan.โ Sitting down beside her, I resisted the urge to pull her onto my lap, settling on placing a hand on her bare knee instead. โI never left, babe. I was just trying to give you some space.โ
โI donโt want any more space,โ she whispered, shifting closer. โI just want you.โ
โYou have me,โ I croaked out, feeling my heart thump rapidly. โAlways.โ
โYou saved my life, Johnny.โ Shivering, she leaned her cheek against my arm and exhaled a ragged breath. โYou saved my brothersโ lives.โ
โYeah, well, you saved mine a long time ago,โ I replied gruffly. โI was only returning the favor.โ
She shook her head, body rigid. โNo, I didnโt โโ
โYeah, you did.โ Wrapping my arm around her thin shoulders, I tucked her frail body under my arm. โYou woke me up, Shan. Made me see things differently. Gave me a life outside of rugby. Something to look forward to.โ Shrugging, I leaned down and kissed her hair. โYouโve done a lot for me right back, so donโt be thinking otherwise.โ
โYour parents want to foster us,โ she confessed, looking up at me all wide-eyed and guilt-ridden. โMe and my brothers.โ
โI know, Shan,โ I replied softly.
โYour mother told us that she wants to keep us โย allย of us,โ she squeezed out. โEven Joey.โ
โYeah?โ My heart fluttered in my chest as I tried to take her measure. โAnd how do you feel about that?โ
โI want to stay,โ she admitted quietly. โWith your family.โ
I mentally heaved a sigh of relief. โThatโs a good thing then, right?โ I coaxed. โThat you want this?โ
โI just feel so bad about it,โ she strangled out. โAll of thisโฆโ Her shoulders sagged and she ducked her head. โWeโre all here in your space, and none of this is fair on you โโ
โI want you here,โ I interrupted her by saying. โI want you in my space, Shannon.โ Twisting sideways, I tipped her chin up, forcing her to meet my gaze. โThereโs nowhere else I want you to be than right here with me and my family, okay?โ
โBut itโs not fair on you,โ she whispered, eyes full of unshed tears. โAll of my brothers and my problems.โ Shivering, she leaned her cheek into my hand and sighed. โI donโt want you to end up hating me.โ
โHating you?โ I shook my head. โShannon, I loveย you. Iโm fucking desperate to keep you here.โ
โBut my brothers โโ
โI want them to stay, too,โ I hurried to tell her. โI love little Sean โ and Ollie? Christ, I even like Tadhg. Heโs a mouthy little fucker, but I understand him. And Joe? He just needs some help. Shite, even Darrenโs growing on me.โ Wiping a tear from her cheek with my thumb, I leaned closer. โI want all of you to stay with my family.โ
โBut weโre a lot of trouble,โ she whispered, sniffling.
โI like your trouble,โ I told her. โI want your trouble, and your complications, and everything else that comes with you.โ Leaning closer, I stroked my nose against hers. โI want you.โ
โWhat if you change your mind?โ she asked, pressing her forehead to mine. โWhat then?โ
โI wonโt change my mind.โ
โBut what if โโ
โI already told you that Iโm a not a fleeting guy,โ I said gruffly. โIโm not that person, Shannon. I wonโt change my mind about you.โ Smiling, I pressed a kiss to her lips and leaned back to look her in the eye. โIโm here forever.โ
โReally?โ
I nodded slowly. โHundred percent.โ
โI justโฆโ Swallowing deeply, she released a torn breath. โI just donโt know what Iโm going to do now.โ Tears spilled down her cheeks. โIโm never going to see her again,โ she sniffled. โI never got to tell her goodbye, or say sorry for all of the mean things I said to her โโ
โYou donโt have anything to apologize for,โ I told her, forcing myself to keep my emotions in check. โYou didnโt then and still donโt. She made a lot of mistakes with you, Shannon. She knew that, baby. She didnโt need to hear you say sorry.โ
โIโm still mad at her,โ Shannon confessed. โI love her and I hate her and I want to scream at the unfairness of it all.โ A small sob tore through her and I couldnโt resist pulling her on to my lap a second longer. โI justโฆโ Sniffling, she buried her face in my neck and held onto my shoulders. โI want to go back to when we were little andย begย her to love herself more than she feared him. To just loveย usย more than she lovedย himโฆโ
โShe loved you,โ I said, trembling now. โShe did, Shannon.โ
โI donโt know โโ
โWell, I know,โ I told her, tightening my hold on her. โYou think I got those kids out of the house? Well, I couldnโt have done that without your Ma. Sheย helpedย me, Shannon.โ
โWhat do you mean?โ
โWhen I was trying to get the door open,โ I explained hoarsely, my body racked with grief and guilt. โMy hand was shaking so fucking bad, and the kids were crying. I was sure your Da was going turn around and see me there. But then your Ma started coughing, making enough noise to muffle their sobs, making enough of a distraction for me to open that door and get them out.โ
โWh-what?โ
โYeah.โ I forced myself to continue. โYour mother did a lot of fucked-up shit, baby, and Iโm not excusing any of it, but that night, when it came down to the wire, she looked me dead in the eyes and told me toย save her children. That was the only thing on her mind at the end. Making sureย youย and your brothers were out of that house.โ
Shannonโs breath hitched in her throat. โYou s-spoke to h-her?โ
Guilt-ridden, I looked my girlfriend in the eyes and nodded. โHe was sitting with his back to the kitchen door, and there were empty bottles spread all over the table. I just didnโt know what they were at the time โ or else, I blocked it out.โ Shaking the horrific image from my head, I focused on Shannonโs face as I spoke. โBut your Ma saw me, and she nodded her head. I didnโt know what to doโฆ I thought for sure she was going to scream at me, but she didnโt. She looked at me and nodded. She was telling me toย go. And then she walked over to the door, and I โโ I cut myself off, struggling to verbalize the night that was haunting me.
โKeep going,โ Shannon begged, silently crying. โPlease?โ
โWe couldnโt talk,โ I choked out, โso we were mouthing words to each other, and she said โgo, go nowย โโ Shuddering, I wiped my cheek against my shoulder and forced myself to keep going. โGet them out,โ she kept saying to me. โTake them away from hereโ.โ
โOh godโฆโ Shannonโs hands tightened on my shoulders. โD-donโt stop.โ
โI told her Iโd come back for her,โ I admitted brokenly. โI said โI promiseโ and she s-said โdonโt come backย โโ My voice cracked and I had to inhale a shuddering breath before I could finish. โI couldnโt understand it. I didnโt know why she wouldnโt come with me. I begged her to justย comeย with me. I would have protected her. I swear, I would have. I thought she was afraid of him hitting her. I didnโt know he was going to doย that, but she must have known because she told me to save her children. Those were her exact words โย save my children.โ Sniffling, I croaked out, โAnd she told me to t-tell all of you t-that s-she was s-sorry.โ A sob tore through me and I desperately tried to wrangle my emotions into check. โAnd then she justโฆshe c-closed the kitchen door and I walkedย awayโฆโ I clenched my eyes shut, trying to stop my own tears. โI left her there, in that house with him, and Iโm so fucking sorry, Shannon!โ
โJohnny โโ
โIโm sorryโโ Shaking my head, I buried my face in her neck and whispered the words, โIโm so sorry,โ over and over until I felt like I couldnโt breathe. She was crying right along with me and I knew I would never fully get over the decision I made that night. โIf I could go back I would,โ I promised her. โIโd change it all โโ
โLook at me,โ Shannon sobbed and I shook my head. I was too ashamed. โJohnny Kavanagh, look at my face.โ When I didnโt comply, she cupped my face in her small hands and forced me to look at her.
โIโm sorry,โ I whispered, feeling tears trickle down both cheeks. โSo sorryย โโ
My words broke off when her lips crashed hard against mine. Shuddering into her touch, I kissed her back, feeling the dampness of her tears mix with mine.
โYou donโt say sorry,โ Shannon croaked out, dragging her lips away from mine. โYou donโt apologize to anyone because youย didnโtย do this. You areย good. Youย savedย me. So many times. So, you donโt putย thatย on you. Not ever.โ Sniffling, she wiped my cheeks with her thumbs and blew out a shaky breath. โAre we clear?โ
โYeah.โ I nodded, drowning in her words. She didnโtย blameย me. She wasnโt mad at me. She didnโtย hateย me. โWeโre clear.โ
โI love you,โ Shannon whispered, still holding my face in her hands. โFor keeps.โ
Exhaling a ragged breath, I kissed her swollen lips. โMost in the world.โ
โCan I stay in here with you tonight?โ she asked then. โI justโฆI want to be close to you.โ
โYeah.โ My voice was thick and gruff. My heart was hammering at the speed of light. โYou can stay with me.โ
I waited for her climb off my lap and slip under the covers before dragging off my clothes and climbing in beside her. โYour skin is always so hot,โ she whispered when I draped an arm around her and tucked her into my chest. โItโs nice.โ Shifting around so that my other arm was under her head, she nuzzled her cheek against my arm and inhaled a deep breath. โYou smell like home.โ
Shivering, I curled my body around hers and pressed a kiss to the curve of her jaw. โYouย areย home.โ
When I left the house this morning, Iโd left Shannon sleeping in my bed. Hours later, I could still feelย herย on my skin. I was washed, dressed in clean training gear, and far away from the girl, and I could stillย feelย her on me.
โYou can do this, Johnny,โย her voice filled my mind.ย โYouโre going to shine.โ
Feeling sick to my stomach, I sat on the bench in the changing room of The Academy training grounds, having passed every medical examination that had been thrown my way this morning, and concentrated on keeping my heartbeat even. Anxiety was gnawing at my gut, adrenalin pumping through my veins at a furious rate, making my knees bop restlessly.
Shaking my hands out, I inhaled a steadying breath and retied the laces on my football boots before moving my attention to the strapping on my thigh. Blocking out everything around me, I emptied my mind and strapped my body until I was satisfied with the level of support. Standing up, I tested my limbs, twisting from side to side, making sure I was good to go.
They were waiting for me.
Right outside.
This was it.
You can do this,ย I mentally chanted to myself.ย You were born to do this.
A loud knock sounded on the other side of the changing room door, followed by my coachโs voice, โLetโs go, Kavanagh.โ
โOn the way,โ I called back, unable to suppress the shudder that rolled through my body as my nerves tangled with my excitement.
Closing my eyes, I blessed myself and threw a silent prayer up to the man upstairs.
Please, God, donโt let me fuck this upโฆ
My phone pinged then, alerting me to a text message. Scrambling for my phone, I quickly unlocked the screen and clicked into the message.
S:ย Youโve got this, Johnny Kavanagh. Go show them what youโre made of and shine. Iโm proud of you. I love you. (A crazy fucking amount.) xx
Fuck me.
