โYou donโt have to come with me, son,โ Dad said for the tenth time as we drove through Ballylaggin town. โI can turn around and take you home.โ
โIโm coming.โ I couldnโt stay at home. I needed out of that house and away from the screaming. The doctor had arrived a while ago and gave Shannon some sort of injection to sedate her. She was sleeping now, curled up in a small ball and passed out cold on my bed. I held her while the doctor took care of her, unable to let her go, until she finally gave in and let sleep take her. Mam was still in the sitting room with Darren and the younger boys. They were still weeping and sobbing their hearts out. It was too much to take and I felt like I was smothering in their grief. โI need to not be there right now,โ I admitted, knees bopping restlessly. I couldnโt do shit in that house, but I could help my father get Joey. Billy had called to let Dad know that Joey had shown up at the house and was understandably hysterical. Heโd managed to barge his way past the authorities and make a break for the house before the firemen dragged him back out. The Gards couldnโt make any hand of him and didnโt want to arrest or restrain him. They were looking for a next of kin, someone to help him and take him away from the area, but all the Lynchs had was an eighty something year old great-grandmother โ and us.
โItโs going to be daunting,โ Dad said as he turned up the familiar hill to Shannonโs house. โThe fireโs not out yet โ and they might not have moved the bodies. Are you sure you can handle it?โ
โIโll be fine.โ
He glanced sideways at me. โJohnny, are you sure?โ
I nodded stiffly. โI need to do this, Da.โ
Flames, smoke, and fire were all I could see, all I could smell when my father pulled onto the street. Reality came crashing down on me as I took in the sight of Shannonโs house burning. Jesus Christ, Iโd been in that house just a couple of hours ago.
Those kidsโฆ
Shannonโฆ
A shudder rolled through me.
They could have all been burnt to death.
โDa,โ I choked out, eyes locked on the ambulance and fire engines. โI had the chance to save her and I didnโtโฆโ
โNo,โ my father replied, cutting me off as he parked the car and turned to face me. โYou saved her children.โ
โBut she wasย rightย there,โ I strangled out, shaking. โRight in front of me.โ I dropped my head in my hands. โAnd now they donโt have anyone.โ
โThey still have us,โ Dad corrected, unfastening his seatbelt. โAnd I still have you.โ Reaching over, he grabbed my neck and forced me to look at him. โYou could have died in that house tonight,โ he whispered. โI could have lost my boy โโ He pressed his forehead to mine and exhaled a ragged breath. โIโd throw the whole world away to keep you โ them included โ and Iโm not sorry for it.โ
โIโm fine, Da,โ I choked out. โIโm okay โโ
โThen donโt do this to yourself,โ he ordered, smoothing my hair back. โYou did everythingย right. You are aย goodย man. You saved herย children.โ
โI feel so responsible,โ I confessed.
โDonโt,โ he replied, steely-blue eyes locked on mine. โThis isย notย on you. This is the work of a madman.โ
โHow could he do that?โ I croaked out. โI donโt understandโฆโ
โNeither do I, son,โ Dad replied. โAnd I donโt want to.โ Pressing a kiss to my brow, he leaned back and looked me straight in the eye. โI need to go and get Joey now,โ he said calmly. โYou can stay in the car, Johnny. You donโt need to come with me โโ
Commotion surrounding a group of Gardaรญ caught my attention, and we both turned to see Joey thrashing around like a maniac, throwing off a blanket they were trying to place over his shoulders. He was frantic and screaming as he tried to push and barge his way into the house. He was all on his own. The last Lynch, standing all alone. โMy brothers and sister!โ he was screaming, as he pushed against the Gardaรญ holding him back. โLet me the fuck in!โ
โThereโs no one else inside.โ
โYouโre wrong!โ he roared. โMy brothers and sister are upstairs! Theyโre inside that house. You have to let me get them. I left them! I left them in there with her!โ
โAh shit,โ Dad muttered, as he climbed out of his Mercedes and jogged towards the house. โJoey? Itโs alright, lad.โ
โI left them in there!โ he continued to scream. โGet your fucking hands off me, you dirty pig โโ
โAh, shite.โ Unfastening my seatbelt, I shoved the car door open and rushed for the house. Ducking under the tape, I moved straight for my girlfriendโs brother, slipping past the authorities trying to stop me. โJoe, itโs okay โโ
โKav,โ he strangled out, noticing me. โI fucking left them in there.โ Tears were dripping down his soot stained cheeks as he broke free from a Gardaโs hold and ran straight for me. โYou have to help me get them out,โ he panted, eyes wild, and clothes covered in soot and smoke stains. โI walked out โ I got pissed and left โ but I couldnโt do it. I couldnโt leave them, so I came back, but the house was โ and my motherโฆfuck, ShannonโฆTadhg! Nobodyโs listening to me โโ
โI have them, Joey,โ I snapped at him, desperate to get him toย hearย me. โI got them out.โ
โYouย haveย them โโ His voice cracked. โYou got themย out?โ
I nodded, shaking. โOllie, Tadhg, Sean, and Shannon.โ
โShitโฆ Darren.โ Panic filled his eyes and he bolted towards the house once more. โMy brotherโs still in there โโ
โNo, heโs at my house, too,โ I choked out, dragging him back to me. โTheyโre all there. I swear to god, lad, all of your brothers and Shannon are at my place right now.โ Wrapping my arms around him, I held him back as I whispered, โTheyโre safe.โ
A ragged breath tore from his throat and he sagged against me.
โYou both need to get out of here,โ a fireman barked. โItโs not safe.โ
โWeโre going,โ I strangled out, backing away with Joey in my arms. โCome on, lad โโ My breath caught in my throat when my gaze landed on the body bags being wheeled into the back of an ambulance. I spun us both around, desperately trying to block the image out of both my head and his. โYou donโt need to watch this.โ
โThis is my fault,โ he whispered.
โNo.โ Shaking my head, I hauled him back under the tape and moved straight for my fatherโs car. โItโs not.โ Flicking my gaze up to meet Dadโs, I gestured for him to climb in. โThis is his fault, Joey. Not yours.โ
โI was high,โ he choked out. โI lost my head and walked out on them.โ
โAnd if you stayed, youโd have been passed out in your bed,โ I barked. โDarren wouldnโt have been out trying to find you, Shannon wouldnโt have been awake to call me, and you all would have burned to death in your sleep!โ
โJesus Christ,โ he hissed, stiffening in my arms. โMy mother โโ
โThis isย notย on you,โ I practically snarled in his ear as I hauled him into the backseat of my fatherโs car and climbed in beside him. โSo donโt you dare let that bastard get in your head!โ
Sinking down on the seat, Joey tipped his head back and closed his eyes, still as a statue and silent as a ghost.
โYou didnโt do this,โ I repeated, leaning over to fasten his seatbelt. โHe did this.โ
โJoey,โ Dad said from the driverโs seat as he started the engine and pulled away from the house. โYouโre going to come home with us now, okay?โ
He started to shake violently, but didnโt respond. Keeping his eyes clenched shut, Joey placed his hands on his knees to steady himself.
โWeโre going to take care of you,โ Dad continued, keeping his voice calm and steady. โAnd thatโs not me asking you, son โ thatโs me telling you.โ
โI should have been here,โ he whispered, trembling. โItโs my job to keep them safe.โ
โTheyย areย safe.โ Reaching over, I slung an arm around his shoulders. โAnd so are you.โ
โNo.โ He shook his head and I watched as a tear trickled down his cheek. โIt was my job to keepย herย safe.โ
โTheyโre going to hate me,โ Joey hissed, backing away from the sitting room door when we finally managed to coax him from the car into the house. โI canโt do it. Theyโre going to blame me โโ
He spun around to leave, but my father clamped his hands down on his shoulders, forcing him to keep eye contact with him. โNobody could hate you,โ Dad coaxed, keeping ahold of Joey for fear he would run. It was a very big possibility with this guy. He was a flight risk. โAnd no one is blaming you for anything.โ
โGet off โโ Breaking free from my fatherโs hold, he heaved violently. โI donโt want you to touch me.โ
โItโs okay,โ Dad replied calmly. โYouโre safe.โ
โI fucked it all,โ he strangled out, gripping his hair with his hands. โI fucked it all.โ
โThen weโll fix it,โ Dad replied. โI can help you, Joey, but you need to let me.โ
โI donโt need your help,โ he choked out. โI just need โโ He glanced around wildly, looking cornered and frightened. Backing up a couple of steps, he ran a hand through his sooty hair and asked, โWhereโs Shan?โ Shaking, he looked around once more, clearly agitated and frightened. โWhereโs my sister?โ
โSheโs upstairs sleeping,โ I told him, trying to keep my voice steady. โIn my room. You can go up to her if you want, lad,โ I coaxed, edging closer to him with my hands up. โWhatever you want to do โโ
โDonโt touch me,โ he spat, batting at my fatherโs hand when he reached for him. Looking startled, he shook his head and hissed, โJustโฆjust stay back.โ
โJoey, itโs okay,โ I coaxed, closing the space between us. โYouโre okay โโ
โDonโt fucking touch me!โ he hissed again, shoving at my chest. โI donโt want โโ
The sitting room door swung open before he had a chance to finish his sentence and my mother appeared in the doorway. โOh, Joey, love,โ Mam sobbed, moving straight for Joey. Not stopping until her hands were cupping his cheeks, my mother looked up at him. โOh, my poor sweetheart,โ she soothed, pulling his head down to rest on her shoulder. โCome here to me.โ
Holding my breath, I watched him warily, praying that he didnโt do anything in this moment to make me have to hurt him. If he lashed out at my mother, grief stricken or not, I would lose my bleeding mind.
Exhaling a ragged breath, he slumped against her, arms shooting out to clutch her tightly. โWhat am I going to do?โ
โIโm here,โ Mam whispered in his ear as she stroked his hair and rubbed his back. โShh, Iโm right here for you, Joey, love.โ
โYou came back,โ Ollie sobbed as he came running out of the sitting room. โTadhg! Joeyโs here.โ Mam stepped aside just as Ollie threw himself at his brother. โI knew youโd come back,โ he cried. โI told them all.โ
โO-ee,โ Sean wailed, toddling into the hallway with his hands out. โO-ee!โ
Sinking to his knees on the hallway tiles, Joey scooped his baby brother into his arms. โIโm sorry, Seany-boo.โ Sniffling, he hooked an arm around Ollie and held both boys to his chest. โIโm so sorry, Ol.โ
โMammyโs in heaven,โ Ollie cried. โThe Gards said Daddy took her away.โ
Sniffing, Joey nodded and pulled them closer. โItโs okay.โ
Mam buried her face in my fatherโs chest, sobbing quietly. โShh,โ Dad whispered, wrapping an arm around her. โItโs okay, baby.โ
โBut sheโs gone,โ Ollie wept. โGone to heaven without us.โ
โMammy,โ Sean cried. โMammy gone.โ
โSheโs not gone, guys,โ Joey whispered, sniffling. โSheโs just an angel now instead.โ
โAn angel?โ Ollie sniffled, looking up at Joey. โWith wings?โ
โYeah. Big, beautiful wings,โ he choked out, wiping his cheek against his shoulder. โA special angel just for you.โ
โDaddy?โ Sean asked, looking wary. โOw, ow.โ
โDaddyโs all gone,โ Joey promised. โNo more ow, Sean.โ
โMammyโs an angel?โ Ollie whispered, sounding almost reverent. โWow.โ
โYeah, and sheโs watching you right now,โ Joey continued to speak in a low, hushed voice to his brothers. โShe doesnโt want to see you crying. That would m-make her sad. You need to be h-happyโโ his voice broke off and he dragged in several sharp breaths before continuing, โThink happy thoughts, okay?โ
โYou left.โ Tadhgโs sharp voice came from the sitting room doorway. Tears dripped down his cheeks as he stared at Joey, jaw jutting out. โYou fuckingย leftย us!โ
โLeave him alone,โ Ollie defended, sniffling. โHeโs back now.โ
โO-ee, no go,โ Sean croaked out. โO-ee stay with Sean.โ
โI know,โ Joey choked out, voice trembling, as he stared back at his brother. โIโm sorry.โ
โI hate you!โ A small sob of pain tore from Tadhgโs throat, and then he was running, barreling against Joey, folding himself up in his big brotherโs arms. โI fucking hate you,โ Tadhg sobbed as he clung to Joey. โI hate you so much.โ
โI know.โ Clenching his eyes shut, Joey held all three boys against him. โMe, too.โ
โYou found him,โ Darren said, voice thick with emotion and relief, as he stood in the doorway where Tadhg had just been, eyes locked on my father. โThank you.โ Staggering forward, he hesitated for the briefest moment before couching down beside his brothers. โHey, Joe.โ
โHey, Dar,โ Joey whispered, green eyes glued to his brother.
โYou okay?โ
Joey shook his head and his face contorted in pain.
โLook at me โโ Cupping his face in his hands, Darren pressed his forehead to Joeyโs and exhaled a ragged breath. โYou did more for her than anyone else.โ
Joey clenched his eyes shut. โI didnโt do enough โโ
โYou did,โ Darren corrected, voice hoarse and raspy. โYou are the reason they survived as long as they did. Not me or anyone else. Just you.โ
Tears trickled down his cheeks. โNo, I should have been there โโ
โYou,โ he repeated. โYou couldnโt have done anything more.โ
Silently, Mam and Dad ushered Tadhg, Ollie, and Sean back into the sitting room, giving Darren and Joey some privacy.
โI left them,โ Joey strangled out, dropping his head on Darrenโs shoulder. โI did that to them. Me. I walkedย away.โ
โYou didnโt leave anyone,โ Darren whispered, smoothing his hand over his brotherโs head. โYou just took a time-out.โ
โIโm in trouble, Darren,โ he squeezed out through sobs. โIโve got a problem and I canโt stop.โ
โI know,โ Darren soothed, holding onto him. โWeโll get you some help, Joe. I promise.โ
โHe did it,โ Joey choked out, crying hard now. โHe finally finished her off โโ His voice cracked and he heaved a huge sob. โJesus Christ, he burned her aliveโฆโ
The sound of a car engine came from outside and I spun around and moved shakily for the door. I couldnโt be in here. I couldnโt listen to their pain another second. Yanking the front door open, I practically ran out into the night, staggering away from the house in my bid to get some clarity.
When my eyes landed on the silver Ford Focus parking up outside, and the familiar blond head climbing out, I felt my body give out beneath me.
โIโve got you, Johnny,โ Gibsie said, wrapping his arms around me just before I collapsed in a heap. โIโm right here, lad,โ he whispered, lowering us both to the gravel. โLet it out.โ
So, I did.
โYou saved their lives, Johnny,โ Gibsie stated when Iโd managed to compose myself enough to tell him what had happened. We were sitting, side by side, in our old, battered treehouse down the back field from my house, looking out as the sun rose over the mountains. โAll of them.โ
โYou should have seen the baby, lad. He was soaked in whiskey.โ Shuddering, I hooked my arms around my knees and swallowed down a scream. โAt the time, I didnโt even think about it โ I just thought that drunk bastard spilled his drink on him or something.โ I shook my head, feeling lost and bewildered. โIt didnโt click in my mind, Gibs.โ
โWhy would it?โ he replied, mirroring my actions. โWho does something like that?โ
โHim,โ I muttered, still reeling.
Gibsie sighed heavily. โAre they all in your house now?โ
โYeah, theyโre inside with my folks. I justโฆ I had to get out and get some breathing space.โ I shrugged helplessly. โItโs too upsetting.โ
โYou did good, Johnny,โ he replied quietly.
โShe wasย rightย there,โ I choked out, eyes filling with tears. โLooking right in my eyes. I told her I would come back for her.โ I clenched my eyes shut and shuddered at the memory. โShe looked resigned, Gibs. Like sheย knew.โ
โShe probably did know, lad,โ he told me. โAnd you must have given that lady some serious peace. Seeing her kids getting out? Knowing that they would be safe? You gave that to her, lad. She couldnโt go anywhere. She knew that. The whole place was rigged to blow. If she had tried to leave with you and he lit that match, youโd have all burned to death before you had a chance to blinkโ you and Sean included.โ
โWhy would he do that?โ I hissed, shivering at the realization of how close to death Iโd come. โWhy would anybody doย that,ย Gibs?
โI donโt know, Johnny,โ he replied.
โIt doesnโt make any sense,โ I strangled out.
โNo,โ he agreed with a heavy sigh. โIt doesnโt.โ
โIโm so freaked out,โ I confessed, biting down on my lip. โI keep thinking, what if he turned around when we were in the hall?โ I shivered again. โWhat the hell would have happened to those kids โโ
โBut that didnโt happen because you got them out,โ Gibsie reminded me. โYouโre all safe, lad.โ
โShe got them out, too.โ I turned to face him. โShe helped me, lad, and I know that sounds fucked up, but she did. It was like she wasโฆwillingย me to get them out of the house.โ I shuddered. โAnd once I did? She just turned around and went back to him. Sheโฆย sacrificedย herself for those kids. For meโฆโ
โShit,โ he whispered.
โYeah.โ I nodded. โShite.โ
We sat in silence for several minutes before Gibsie finally rose from his feet and moved for the ladder. โI better make tracks,โ he said. โMy Mam will be in meltdown mode.โ
โGibs?โ
โYeah, lad?โ
โDonโt go home yet, okay?โ
He paused on the ladder, hands clasping the wooden frame, and I watched as a multitude of emotions flashed across his features. Finally, he climbed back up and reclaimed the space beside me. โYou know, if you wanted to watch the sun come up with me, you only had to say, lad,โ he mused, nudging my shoulder with his.
โYeah,โ I choked out a hollow laugh. โThatโs what it is.โ
