I was surprised at how I could remain so calm when I was having a nervous breakdown on the inside. When I told my parents what had happened, Dad instructed me to act normal with Shannon and her brothers while he went inside with Mam to call the Gardaรญ. The realization of what Iโd done was hitting me hard, and the smell of alcohol wafting off the tiny child in my arms was bringing with it terrible fucking thoughts. I knew I had to go back for their mother. I promised her I would. Every instinct in my body was screaming at me to go back to that house right now, but for once in my life, I was trying to do what my father had asked by keeping my head and letting the Gardaรญ deal with it.
With Sean in one arm and Shannon tucked under the other, I led them into the sitting room, where Dad was re-lighting the fire. It humbled me to see how incredibly resilient these kids were. Theyโd just been through something that would rattle a grown man โ myself included โ and yet here they were; just accepting the hand theyโd been dealt, bouncing back up and getting on with it. Just like Iโd seen their sister do on countless occasions. Jesus, they were the ultimate survivors.
โWhoa,โ Ollie, who had run down from the kitchen with a bowl of ice-cream in hand, gasped and skidded to a halt in the middle of the sitting room. โThatโs like a cinema.โ He pointed to the flat screen mounted to the wall over the fireplace and nudged his brother. โLook at the size of it.โ
โI have eyes,โ Tadhg shot back, too interested in the bowl of ice-cream he was scarfing down. โAnd what do you expect? Theyโre loaded.โ
โAre we allowed to say that?โ Ollie asked, looking up at his brother. โCall them rich?โ
Tadhg shrugged. โItโs true, isnโt it?โ
โNo, youโre not allowed to say that,โ Shannon choked out, looking mortified, as she walked over to her brothers and glared at them. โNow have some manners and thank Mrs. Kavanagh for the ice-cream.โ
โThanks, Dellie,โ Ollie chimed.
โYeah,โ Tadhg mumbled, flushing a little as he looked up at my mother. โThanks for this, Edel.โ
โYouโre more than welcome, boys,โ Mam replied, voice hoarse as she walked into the sitting room. โAnd, Shannon, love, call me Edel.โ
โSorry, Mrs. Kavanagh,โ Shannon mumbled, flustered. โI mean โ Edel.โ
โAlright, boys,โ my father said, waving the remote control of the television in his hand. โWhat are we watching? We have all the channels.โ
โScore!โ Tadhg cheered and dove for the couch. โCan I pick?โ
โNo, no, me,โ Ollie begged, racing after Tadhg. โPlease, John. Me, me โโ
โMe, me,โ Tadhg mimicked, gleaming in victory when Dad handed him the remote. โThanks, John.โ Turning to Ollie, he smirked. โSit down, kid. Youโll get your turn when youโre up against Sean.โ
Huffing out a sigh, Ollie sank down on the couch beside him and shoved a spoon of ice-cream into his mouth. โItโs no fair being younger.โ
โYeah, well, thatโs how it feels for me with Shannon and Joey,โ Tadhg shot back, unaffected. โDeal with it.โ
โAnd Darren,โ Ollie offered. โHeโs the oldest.โ
Tadhg snorted. โHe doesnโt count.โ
Ollie turned to look at his brother. โDoes Joey still count?โ
Tadhg nodded stiffly. โFor now.โ
โOkay.โ Nodding in acceptance, Ollie turned to watch the television as Tadhg channel surfed with my father.
โAre you alright, Shannon, love?โ Mam asked in a low tone, eyes glued to my girlfriendโs scratched-up face.
Shannon blushed and nodded. โIโm fine, thanks.โ Tucking her hair behind her ear, she moved to walk back to me, but quickly stopped herself short and stiffened, looking uncertain. โIโm just, ahโฆโ Glancing around at her brothers, she exhaled a ragged breath. โIโm really very sorry for bringing my trouble to your door again, Mrs. Kavanagh.โ Shoulders sagging, she whispered, โI just didnโt know what else to do.โ
โOh, pet, come here to me โโ Mam walked straight over to her and pulled her into her arms. My mother wasnโt a tall woman at 5โ4, but she still dwarfed Shannon who was barely 5โ0. โYouโre going to be okay,โ I heard Mam whisper in her ear as Shannon remained rigid. โIโm going to take care of all of you.โ
Shuddering, Shannon slowly relaxed and hugged my mother back. โIโm so sorry.โ
โDonโt be sorry, love. You did everything right tonight.โ Pressing a kiss to Shannonโs head, Mam pushed her hair off her face, cupped her small face between her hands, and smiled down at her. โYou and your brothers are going to stay with us for the night. Weโll get everything straightened up in the morning, okay?โ
Shannon nodded weakly. โThank you so much for your help.โ
โIโm very proud of you for calling,โ Mam continued to say. โI know you must have been scared, and it was very brave of you to make that phone call when you knew what might happen.โ
โDo you think my Mam is okay?โ Shannon whispered, gaze flicking nervously to the boys and then back to Mam before landing on me. โI shouldnโt have left her there.โ
โIโm sure sheโs fine, love. Why donโt you sit down with your brothers and Johnny can go and put the tea on for me?โ Mam suggested, steering the conversation away from her mother. โAndย Iโllย โโ Walking over to me, Mam tickled Seanโs toes and grinned up at his lonesome face. โGive this gorgeous boy a wash?โ Smiling at Sean, she stroked his cheek. โHmm? What do you say, Seany baby? Will we get you all cleaned up?โ
โGood idea, Sean,โ Shannon encouraged, voice thick with emotion. โBut I donโt have any clothes for him.โ Blushing furiously, she whispered, โAnd he still, uhโฆhe tends to have accidents when heโs nervous.โ
โNot to worry,โ Mam replied, still smiling at Sean. โThereโs plenty of boxes of Johnnyโs old clothes in the attic.โ
โWhat do you say, bud?โ I asked Sean. โAre you going to go for a nice bath and wash that stinky booze off ya?โ
Sean looked up at me for a long moment before nodding and leaning his body towards my mother.
โOh, youโre such a good boy,โ Mam coaxed, cuddling him close to her chest as she trailed out of the sitting room. โOh, and you give the best hugs.โ
My fatherโs phone began to ring then. โTwo minutes, lads,โ he said, standing up from where heโd been sitting between Ollie and Tadhg, refereeing their battle of the remote. โIโll just take this.โ As he walked past me, he inclined his head for me to follow him.
โIโll be two minutes,โ I whispered, kissing Shannonโs forehead. โOkay?โ
Shivering, she wrapped her arms around herself and nodded. โO-okay.โ
I walked over to the door only to hesitate and turn back. โShan?โ
She looked up at me with a lost expression. โYeah, Johnny?โ
โI love you.โ
Relief flashed in her big, blue eyes and she smiled back at me.
โI love you,โ Tadhg mimicked from the couch. Not taking his eyes off the television, he made loud kissing noises before snorting loudly. โLad, you are so whipped.โ
โUgh,โ Ollie snickered. โI bet he kisses her with tongues, too.โ
โThatโs our sister, you little creep,โ Tadhg grumbled. โI donโt want to be thinking about Shannonโs tongue in Johnnyโs mouth.โ
โIs that how it works?โ Ollie asked, sounding appalled. โThey put theirย tonguesย in each otherโsย mouths?โ
โYeah.โ
Ollie frowned. โForย what?โ
โThey probably do a lot worse than that, Ol,โ Tadhg muttered. โItโs disgusting but whatever.โ
โThey do?โ Ollieโs eyes widened. โLike what?โ
โUh, you should probably stop asking questions now,โ Tadhg muttered, nudging Ollie in the ribs.
โYes, you should definitely stop asking questions, Ollie,โ Shannon strangled out, red-faced, as she hurried over to her brothers and sank down on the couch between them. โTadhg, donโt tell him anything else.โ
โI canโt believe you let him stick his tongue in your mouth,โ Ollie accused, gaping at his sister. โWhat is wrong with you?โ
โI donโt do that,โ Shannon snapped, flustered. โHeโs joking, right, Tadhg?โ
โShe does,โ Tadhg countered. โI saw them cracking on outside the house.โ
โTadhg!โ
โThey were steaming up the windows of his car,โ Tadhg snickered. โOh โย andย she snuck him in her bedroom on Saturday night, too. He was there all night long.โ
โWhat? I didnโt know Johnny had a sleepover,โ Ollie replied, sounding puzzled. โYou never said.โ
โThatโs because she was too busy,โ Tadhg chuckled. โShe was allย โoh, Johnny, yes! Please!โ
โI was not,โ Shannon spluttered. โYou little liar.โ
โKiss me, touch me, hold me, love me,โ Tadhg mocked in a girlish voice. โMwah, mwah, mwah.ย Yes, I love your rugby ballsย โโ
โTadhg!โ
โYuck,โ Ollie groaned. โThatโs disgusting.โ
โShannon does it with Johnny, Joey does it with Aoife, Darren does it with Alex,โ Tadhg continued, not missing a beat. โAnd youโll do it when youโre older with someone you fancy, Ol.โ
โI willย not,โ Ollie spluttered, looking horrified. โI donโt even like my own tongue in my mouth.โ
โYeah.โ Tadhg snorted. โSure.โ
โDo you do it?โ Ollie asked.
โIโm starting secondary school in September,โ Tadhg replied nonchalantly. โWhat do you think?โ
โSo?โ Shannon replied, eyeing her brother suspiciously. โWhat does starting secondary school have to do with kissing?โ
โJust that I know what Iโm talking about,โ Tadhg told her. โAnd thatโs all Iโm saying on the matter.โ
โJohnny โโ my fatherโs voice filled my ears and I tore my gaze off Shannon and her brothers before hurrying into the hallway after him.
โWhatโs going on?โ I asked, watching him warily as he nodded and answered whoever was on the phone to him with one-word responses. โDa?โ
โCome here,โ he mouthed, gesturing for me to follow him.
A nervous tremor rolled down my spine as I trailed after him, not stopping until we were in the kitchen with the door closed behind us.
โThanks a million for calling me, Billy,โ Dad said into the phone. โI will โ yesโฆyes, I know, man. I understand. Thanks. Yeah, Iโll see you there.โ Hanging up, he looked at me and sighed heavily. โJohnnyย โโ his voice cracked. Shaking his head, he placed the phone on the kitchen island and exhaled a pained breath before saying, โSit down, son.โ
And Iย knew.
I knew right there in that very moment that something terrible was going to come out of his mouth.
โDa,โ I bit out, shaking like an ivy-leaf. โWhatโs going on?โ
โJohnny โโ Releasing another pained sigh, my father walked over and steered me to a stool. โI need you to sit down, son.โ
Fuck.
Feeling weak, I sank down on a stool at the island and dropped my head in my hands. โJust tell me,โ I strangled out, clenching my eyes shut. โJust say it. Please.โ
โThat was Billy Collins on the phone,โ Dad explained, taking the stool opposite mine. โDo you remember Billy? I went to school with him? We were great friends. Heโs been over here a few times with his wife for dinner โโ
โI know heโs the superintendent at the station, Da,โ I choked out, knowing exactly who my father was talking about. His Garda buddy. โWhat did he say?โ
Dad nodded stiffly. โHeโs sending a car over here. Theyโll be with us shortly.โ Dad glanced down at his phone that was lighting up again. โI called Darren, too. Heโs on the way.โ
โAre they taking them back?โ I growled, flicking my gaze up to meet his. โAre you seriously going to let them take those kids back to that fucking house?โ
โNo, Johnny,โ Dad replied calmly. โThatโs not whatโs โโ
โSheโs not going anywhere,โ I hissed, feeling anxious and wildly protective. โI donโt give a shite what you, Darren, or any bleeding Gards say. Youโre not taking Shannon back there. Iโm keeping her here with me!โ
โNobody is taking anyone back there,โ Dad coaxed. โI promise, son, so just calm down.โ
โThen why are the Gards coming here?โ I demanded.
โThey need to take your statements,โ Dad replied softly.
โStatements forย what?โ I gaped at him. โAm I in trouble for taking them? Because their Ma told me toโโ My words broke off and I dragged in several deep breaths before continuing, โShe told me to go, Da,โ I hissed, shuddering at the memory of Mrs. Lynchโs haunted eyes looking into mine. โShe saidย take them!โ
Tears filled my fatherโs eyes and I blanched. โOh fuck, itโs bad, isnโt it?โ I choked out, jerking off the stool. โWhatโs happening here?โ Trembling, I backed away from the island, knowing in my heart something bad was going on. โDid he hurt her?โ Pain speared through me at the thought. โIs that it? Is she in the hospital?โ
โJohnny, just breatheย โโ
โI donโt understand whatโs happening here!โ I roared, feeling my heart hammer violently against my ribcage. โJust tell me whatโs going on, Da!โ
โThere was a fire at the Lynch house.โ
โWhat?โ My heart stopped dead in my chest. โNo, no, no.โ I shook my head, rejecting the words coming out of his mouth. โI was there less than two hours ago, Da. There was no fire!โ
โThereย wasย a fire, Johnny,โ Dad told me. โWhen you showed up here with the children and I called Billy, he was already at the scene of a fire in Elk Terrace. By the time the emergency services arrived, the house was up in flames.โ
โWhat?โ my voice rose with my panic. โI donโtโฆhowโฆwhat?โ
โJohnny, pet, you need to sit down.โ
โItโs a half an hour from their house to ours,โ I spat. โHow does a house burn down in half a fucking hour, Da?โ
โA house burns down that quickly if itโs lit intentionally,โ Dad replied gruffly. โThe house was doused in flammables, Johnny, and all the windows and doors were locked. They didnโt have a chance of getting out.โ Shivering, he added, โBilly called me back just there to let me know that two bodies were pulled out.โ Sighing heavily, he added, โGiven all the information you told me that I relayed to him, heโs confident that the fire was set mere minutes after you took the children โ and the bodies are โโ
โDonโt say it โโ Holding my head in my hands, I staggered backwards, knocking up against the sink. โNo, Da. Jesus Christ, donโt tell meย thatย โโ
โJohnny, shh โ itโs okay, son.โ Pushing his stool back, my father walked towards me. โCome here โโ
โSheโs dead?โ I whispered, feeling tears drip down my cheeks. โBut I told her Iโd go back for her,โ I choked out, shaking my head. โJesus Christ, I should have made her come with me!โ
My fatherโs arms came around me. โShh,โ he whispered, holding me up when my body felt weak to the bone. โItโs okay. Iโve got you.โ
โI left her there, Da,โ I strangled out, clutching my father. โI left her in that house!โ
โDo you know what you did tonight?โ he asked, tightening his hold on me. โYou saved four children.โ
โNo.โ I clenched my eyes shut and buried my face in his neck. โDonโt say it like that โโ
โThey would have burned to death inside that house if you hadnโt been the crazy, reckless, brilliant man you are,โ he continued to say. โThey wouldnโt have had a chance in hell of getting out of there, son. Sean was doused in alcohol. You saved them all, Johnny. They were in their beds, son. They were terrified of him. There was no way those kids would have left their rooms if you hadnโt gone in there to get them.โ Dad shuddered before adding, โAnd what you said about slipping on the staircase and the landing and hallway when you were inside the house? That was alcohol and petrol, Johnny. One spark of a flame and it was all over for those children โ the entire place would have ignited with all of you in there โ butย youย kept your head andย youย got them out.โ
โNo, no, no,โ I strangled out, terrified. โI didnโt know what I was doing.โ
โYou trusted your instincts,โ he corrected. โYou might not have understood what was happening, son, but youย knewย they needed to get out. Because of you, there are four children alive and breathing in this house tonight.โ
โDo they know yet?โ I whispered, clenching my eyes shut tightly.
โNo,โ Dad replied.
โFuck,โ I croaked out. โHow am I going to tell Shannon?โ
โTell me what?โ Shannonโs voice filled my ears and I flinched.
โShan,โ I choked out, pushing away from my father and finding her hovering in the kitchen doorway, looking small and terrified. โYou okay?โ
โWhatโs wrong?โ she croaked out, eyes wide and full of fear. โWhy are you crying?โ
โIโm not crying, baby.โ Sniffling, I wiped my eyes and moved to go to her, needing to hold her in my arms and just stop the world for a minute. My head was spinning, my heart was reeling, and I couldnโt take it all in. Closing the space between us, I pulled her into my arms and squeezed her body tighter than I knew I should. โI love you,โ I whispered, holding her close. โJesus Christ, Shan, Iโm so fucking sorry.โ
โWhy are you sorry?โ she choked out, clinging to my waist. โWhatโs going on?โ
โI tried, Shan,โ I strangled out, tightening my hold on her. โI really did.โ
โJohnny, whatโs happening?โ she asked, voice cracking.
โShannon!โ Darrenโs voice filled my ears and I turned just as he burst through the utility room door, tears streaming down his cheeks. โAre you all okay?โ His bloodshot eyes were wild and panicked as he staggered into the kitchen. โWhere are the boys?โ
โDarren?โ Shannon cried, breaking out of my hold. โWhatโs happening here?โ
โShan โโ A gut-wrenching sob tore from his throat. โI canโt โโ
โThe boys are all here and theyโre all safe,โ Dad replied, moving to catch Darren just as his legs gave out beneath him. โThatโs itโ youโre okay.โ Lowering them both to the floor, my father pulled him into his arms. โIโve got you.โ
โMam,โ he cried, burying his face in my fatherโs neck. โMy Mam!โ
โI know,โ Dad whispered, cupping the back of his neck. โShh, I know, lad. I know.โ
โWhatโs wrong with Mam?โ Shannon choked out, trembling violently. โWh-what did he d-do?โ
โSheโs dead!โ Darren cried. โHe fucking killed her!โ
โNo!โ Shaking her head, Shannon backed away like her brotherโs words had scalded her. โNo, no, no, youโre telling lies.โ
โHeย killedย my mother,โ Darren choked out, clutching my father. โFucking bastard โโ
โStop saying that!โ Shannon screamed, pulling on her hair. โSheโs not dead, Darren. Sheโs at home โ Iย sawย her!โ Clutching her head in her hands, she glared at her brother and hissed, โSheโs fine.โ Tears streamed down her cheeks as she looked up at me. โTell him, Johnny!โ she begged, lunging for me. โTell him heโs wrong!โ Grabbing my hand, she tugged aimlessly. โJ-just t-tell h-him โโ
โThere was a fire at your house, Shan,โ I strangled out, feeling my body shake with the effort it was taking not to lose it.
โA fire?โ Her eyes were wide and full of tears. โNo, Johnny, no!โ
โThereย wasย a fire, baby,โ I croaked out, heart racing. โAnd your Maโฆshe, ah โโ my words broke off and I cleared my throat before forcing the words, โshe and your Da didnโt make it,โ out of my mouth.
โNo.โ It was one word but I knew the sound would haunt me until my dying day as she stared up at me, those big, blue eyes begging me to tell her different. I wanted to โ more than anything โ but there was no escaping this. Her parents were dead.
โIโm so sorry,โ I whispered, moving for her. โShan, Iโm so โโ
โNo!โ she repeated, backing up until her back hit the wall behind her. โNo!โ Covering her face with her hands, she slid down the wall. โMammy, no, no, no! Not my Mamโฆnot my Mam.โ
A tear slid down my cheek as I watched her, feeling more helpless than I ever had in my life. Crouching down beside her, I placed a hand on her knee. โShan โโ
โNo,โ she strangled out, shaking my hand off. โNo, no, no.โ
Exhaling brokenly, I tried again. โShan โโ
โI said no!โ she sobbed, wrapping her arms around her legs. โNoโฆโ Burying her face in her knees, she rocked back and forth. โOh god, theyโre both gone.โ
โI know.โ Feeling at a complete loss, I edged closer and nuzzled her shoulder with my cheek, desperate to give her comfort. โIโm so sorry.โ
โJoey,โ Shannon sobbed. โJoeyโฆ. Oh, god, whereโs Joey?โ
โItโs okay, Shannon,โ my father replied, tone coaxing. โWeโll find him, pet.โ
โHe doesnโt know,โ she wailed. โHeโs gone!โ She tugged roughly on her hair. โHeโs just gone โโ
โDonโt,โ I choked out, taking her hands in mine. โDonโt do that to yourself, baby.โ I couldnโt take another second of watching her like this. โPlease.โ
โDonโt touch me!โ Trembling, Shannon yanked her hands away from mine, chest heaving. โD-donโt do it, okay?โ
โOkay.โ Holding my hands up, I watched her watch me, feeling my heart crack clean open in my chest. โI wonโt do anything you donโt want me to.โ
I remained exactly where I was, keeping my hands to myself, as I waited for her to take what she needed from me.
Eventually, she did.
With a huge sob, Shannon scrambled onto my lap and threw her arms around my neck, clinging to me in a way I knew I would never fully deserve. โDonโt leave me โโ Tightening her arms around my neck, she buried her face in my chest and whispered, โPlease donโt goโฆโ
Exhaling a broken sigh, I wrapped her up in my arms and held her to me. โI wonโt.โ Tightening my hold on her frail body, I rocked her gently. โIโm right here.โ Exhaling a ragged breath, I ducked my face and dropped a kiss to her hair. โI promise.โ
I wanted to stand in front of this girl and shield her from all the horror she was exposed to. It wasnโt right, dammit, and I felt like I was drowning in the unfairness of her life. If I could lay her cuts and bruises over my skin, I would.
A loud knock came from the back door then, followed by a male voice. โJohn, is it okay if we come in?โ
โWeโre in here, Billy,โ Dad called out, still holding Darren. โCome on in.โ
Two uniformed Gardaรญ walked into our kitchen then, followed by my fatherโs friend, superintendent Billy Collins. The moment they removed their hats and said, โIโm so sorry for your loss,โ the worst, most heartbreaking sob tore from Darrenโs throat and Shannon sagged weakly against me.
Holding her tightly, I slowly rocked her in my arms, whispering everything and anything I could think of in her ear so she didnโt have to hear what the Gards were saying to my father and Darren. She was hysterical, gasping for air, and crying harder than Iโd ever heard her cry before. My heart was shattering into a million pieces, my mind reeling, but I stayed right there with her, unable to separate my emotions from hers.
When Dad, Darren, and the Gardaรญ went down to the sitting room to where Mam was with the younger boys to break the news, and the screaming started, I held her even tighter. Right there on the floor of my kitchen, I cradled her in my arms, feeling every one of her sobs and cries in the deepest part of my soul. โShh, little darlingโฆโ
โYouโre s-singing.โ Sniffling, she clung to my chest. โHere Comes the Sun.โ
Iย wasย singing.
I was doing whatever I could to make this better for her.
โThatโs m-my Granda Murphyโs s-song,โ she hiccupped. โYou remember me t-telling you t-that?โ
โYeah.โ I remembered her telling me about her grandfather singing this song to her when she was frightened and it was all I could do in this moment. โShould I stop?โ
โN-no.โ Shannon shook her head. โD-donโt stop.โ
Trembling, I continued to rock her in my arms and softy hum the words of the song in her ear, while I waited for the doctor I knew had been called.
