Jerking awake, I remained perfectly still and listened for the noise I was certain had woken me. A few seconds later and the familiar vibrating sound filled my ears. Shifting around, I felt for my phone, grabbing it out from under my pillow. Bleary eyed and half asleep, I clicked the accept button and put it to my ear. โGibs, if this isnโt an emergency, Iโm going to wring your bleeding neck.โ
โH-hi, Johnny.โ
At the sound of Shannonโs voice, I was instantly alert. โShannon?โ Pulling myself up on my elbows, I ran a hand through my hair and tried to blink awake. Twisting sideways, I glanced at the alarm clock on my nightstand. 01:23 it read. โAre you okay?โ
โNo,โ her voice was so hushed it was barely audible.
โWhatโs wrong?โ I demanded. โWhatโs happening?โ The sound of sniffling coming from the other end of the line had me throwing off my covers. โTalk to me, Shan,โ I coaxed, voice still thick from sleep, as I rummaged around in the darkness for my clothes. โHmm?โ
โHeโs here,โ she choked out, voice laced with fear. โHeโs downstairs and Iโm scared.โ
โWhat do you mean?โ
โMy dad,โ she strangled out. โHeโs in the house, Johnny.โ
Fuck.ย โCan you get out?โ
โNo. Heโs in the kitchen. I canโt go back down there.โ
Shite.ย โIโm on my way,โ I replied, snatching my keys off my desk and moving for the door. โIโm leaving right now.โ
โIโm sorry.โ
โDonโt say sorry.โ Thundering down the staircase, I darted through the hallway. โAre you safe?โ Skidding across the kitchen, I bolted through the utility room and out the back door. โAre you in your room?โย Please tell me youโre in your roomโฆ
โYeah, my doorโs locked.โ
Thank Jesus.ย โIโm in my car now, Shan,โ I said as I unlocked my car and climbed inside. Balancing my phone between my ear and my shoulder, I turned the key in the ignition and tore off, sending gravel spraying everywhere. โIโll be as fast as I can.โ
โTheyโre not shouting,โ she told me and the terror I could hear in her voice was crippling. โWhy arenโt they shouting?โ
โI donโt know, baby,โ I choked out. โBut Iโm coming.โ
โSomethingโs wrong,โ she said in a small voice. โHeโsย differentย tonight. I donโt know whatโs happening, Johnny, but somethingโs very wrong. I can feel it in my bones.โ
โIโm going to get you out of there,โ I hissed, struggling to rein in my fury. โI promise. Iโm going to take you out of that fucking hole and youโre never going back.โ
โJohnny, Iโm really scared,โ she sobbed.
โI know.โ Using one hand to steer, I dragged my seatbelt across my chest with the other and snapped it into place. โI know, baby, but Iโm coming.โ Gripping the wheel, I had the biggest urge to tell her that I loved her. A voice inside of my head was screamingย do it now because you might not get another chance.ย โShannon, I love you.โ
โI love you, too, Johnny,โ she whispered and then the line went dead.
โFuck!โ Slamming my hand down on the steering wheel, I drove like a deranged lunatic all the way to her house.
When I pulled up outside Shannonโs house half an hour later and climbed out of my car, I couldnโt stop my hands from shaking. Wholly enraged, I stalked up the overgrown garden path with every intention of kicking the fucking door down to get my girlfriend out of that house.
โJohnny?โ Shannonโs voice filled my ears and I backtracked, gaze landing on her bedroom window on the second level of the house.
Jesus Christ.
โWhoa, whoa, whoa โโ I held my hands up, pulse racing. โDonโt come out there, baby,โ I warned her, watching with my heart in my mouth as she climbed onto the windowsill and lowered herself onto the shitty veranda. I knew it was shitty because Iโd almost cracked my neck climbing up there. Shannon was dressed in a pair of navy pajama shorts and vest and had a worn pair of runners on her tiny feet. No hoodie. No jacket. Nothing. โJust climb back in,โ I coaxed, panicking at the sight of her up there. โAnd Iโll come inside and get you.โ
โIย canโt.โ She shook her head and continued to shimmy on her ass to the edge of the veranda. โHe locked the door.โ
โThrow me down your keys,โ I called back. โDonโt climb down here โโ
โNo, no, no, you donโt understand,โ she whispered. โHeโs acting really strange, Johnny, and I donโt want him to know Iโm leaving. Just catch me, okay?โ
Ah fuck.
โShannon, youโre going to hurt yourself,โ I strangled out, in full-blown panic mode now. โYou canโt climb down from there, baby. Youโre too small.โ
โDonโt go near the door, Johnny,โ she begged when I moved to do just that. โPlease! Justโฆjust break my fall, okay?โ
Furious, I bit down a snarl and walked to the edge of the path, feeling thankful as hell that I was almost 6โ4. โOkay.โ Reaching up, I held my hands out to her, praying she had the dexterity to not trip up and break her bleeding neck. โNice and slow.โ
She nudged herself to the edge of the veranda and I panicked. โDonโt jump,โ I warned her. โJust drop your legs down, and Iโll grab them.โ
Thankfully, Shannon listened to me and gingerly lowered her legs. โGood job.โ Catching ahold of her legs, I wrapped an arm around them and held my free hand up for her to take. โIโve got you,โ I promised. โTrust me โโ
I didnโt get a chance to finish my sentence, because Shannon quite literally flung herself down to me.
Catching her easily, I hooked an arm around her back and lowered her to her feet. โDonโt you ever do that to me again,โ I choked out, breathing hard from the almost heart-attack she gave me. โYou could have killed yourself.โ
โSorry,โ she whispered, burying her face in my chest. โThanks for coming.โ
โWhereโs Joey?โ I asked as I led her to my car.
โHeโs gone, Johnny,โ she sobbed. โHe left.โ
โAnd Darren?โ
โHe went to find Joey,โ she sniffled, sinking into the passenger seat. โItโs all gone to hell.โ
โIs your mother in there with him?โ
She nodded. โI couldnโt do anything. He justโฆhe just showed up and she was standing there. I was afraid so I ran and left her with him.โ
โGood,โ I told her, drowning in the relief that she had the good sense to run.
โNo, no, itโs not,โ she argued weakly, sounding confused. โItโs not good at all.โ Shaking her head, she pressed her fingers to her temples and exhaled a ragged breath. โHe came upstairs to make sure I was asleep and he was being nice.โ She looked up at me, wide-eyed and terrified. โI donโt understand whatโs happening here.โ
โWhere are the boys?โ
โIn their rooms.โ She dropped her head in her hands and sobbed. โI panicked. I should have brought them in my room with me, but IโฆI couldnโt think straight.โ
Jesus Christ.ย โOkay.โ Trying to keep my voice calm, I pulled my phone out of my pocket. โIโll call the Gards. Heโs not allowed to be here. Theyโll arrest him โโ
โWh-what? Johnny no, no, no โโ Shaking her head, Shannon lunged for my phone. โIf you call them, theyโll take us away right now,โ she choked out, panicking. โIโll be sent away.โ Tears streamed down her cheeks. โI wonโt see you again.โ
โNo, you wonโt,โ I tried to coax. โNobodyโs going to take you anywhere โโ
โYou donโt understand,โ she sobbed. โYou donโt know how it works, but I do.โ
I stood there, feeling at a complete fucking loss. What the hell was I supposed to do? I couldnโt just walk away from this. โShannon,โ I tried again. โI wonโt let anyone take you. My parents said that theyโll โโ
โYou donโt get it,โ she sniffled, cutting me off. โIf the Gards come, theyโll call Patricia and the social workers.โ A huge sob racked through her frail body. โWeโll be removed from the house, and you wonโt be able to stop that. No one will.โ
โYou canโt live like this, baby,โ I choked out, feeling the anger rattle through me. โIt has to stop.โ
โI know,โ she sobbed. โI just donโt know how to stop it.โ
Releasing a low growl, I ran my hands through my hair and looked back to the house. โListen, just stay in the car, lock all of the doors, and wait for me.โ
โJohnny โโ
โJust stay here,โ I said, trying to keep my tone gentle. โI need to get the boys. I canโt leave them in there with him, okay?โ
โNo!โ Springing out of the car, she clutched my t-shirt. โHe wants us all in bed. If he sees you, heโll know I called you โ heโll know Iโm not in bed โ and I donโt know what heโll do.โ She shook her head vehemently, fingers knotting tightly in my t-shirt. โHeโs calm now, but if you go in there, he could hurt them. He could hurtย you! You donโt know what heโs capable of, Johnny. You donโt!โ
Red flags were shooting up all around me. โI wonโt let him see me,โ I told her, keeping my voice steady. โIโll sneak in, get the boys, and I wonโt get caught. I promise. But I canโt leave them inside that house, Shannon.โ
She looked torn, watching me with a pleading expression. โThen Iโll come with youโโ
โNo, you wonโt,โ I practically hissed, guiding her back into the passenger seat, my heart hammering at the thought of her going anywhere near that man. โJust stay in the car, baby,โ I ordered, slamming the door shut before she had a chance to respond, and hurrying back to the house.
My hands were shaking when I grabbed the wheelie bin and quietly dragged it over to the veranda. I hated heights, but not as badly as I hated this bleeding house. Climbing on top of the bin, I hoisted myself up onto the veranda, trying not to think about what I was doing, and praying Shannon had the good sense to stay in the car. Grabbing the window ledge, I hauled myself through her bedroom window, careful not to make a noise. The overwhelming stench of whiskey was the first thing that hit my senses as I quickly moved the furniture she had piled against the door.
Drunk bastard.
Every instinct inside of me demanded that I go downstairs and rip his fucking head off, but my brain was louder, screaming at me to get these kids out of this house, and take Shannon away from here.
Donโt lose it,ย I mentally chanted as I worked to clear my path,ย be smart.
You canโt protect her if youโre in a prison cell, Johnny.
Keep your goddamn head.
Theyโve been through enough.
Get them out of here!
Heart hammering in my chest, I unlocked her bedroom door and slowly pulled it inwards, wincing when it creaked. The silence in the house was eerie and the hushed voices drifting up from the kitchen had me on edge. Shannon was right. Something was very wrong about this picture. Stepping over a puddle of god knows what, I crept into the landing only to freeze in terror when my eyes landed on Sean who was toddling down the steps on his bottom.
On complete impulse, driven forward by my gut instinct that was screaming danger, I whispered his name, โSean.โ
He paused on the turn of the staircase and looked up at me, wide-eyed and fearful, and I swear to god, my heart cracked clean open in my chest.
Smiling as brightly as I could, I waved and gestured for him to come back up to me. Horrified didnโt begin to cover the feeling that engulfed me when I watched a wet stain spread across the crotch of his Bob the Builder pajama pants as he obediently toddled back up the stairs towards me. Come to look at it, he was wet all over.
Jesus Christโฆ
When he stepped back onto the landing, he just stared up at me, hair drenched, clutching a raggedy looking teddy bear, looking all wide-eyed and broken as he sucked on three tiny fingers.
โHey, Sean,โ I whispered, crouching down to his level and almost spluttering when the smell of whiskey hit me. โDo you remember me?โ I asked him, eyes watering from the stench. โIโm Johnny.โ
He looked up at me with those big, lonesome eyes and nodded slowly.
โDo you want to come for spin with me again?โ I asked, desperate to get him the hell out of this hellhole. โDoes that sound like fun?โ
Silent as a ghost, he nodded again.
โGood boy โ Iโm going to pick you up, okay?โ I coaxed, slowly stretching my hands out to him. โIโm not going to hurt you. Iโm a nice friend, remember? Iโve got that fast car and a shit ton of sweets for you โโ I slowly lifted him into my arms like he was a bomb that could detonate at any minute.ย Jesus, he was soaking through.ย โGood job, buddy,โ I coaxed when he didnโt resist me. โIโm going to take you to your sister now, okay?โ
โO-ee.โ
I froze, stunned to hear him speak for the first time. โHmm, Sean?โ I whispered, heart in my mouth. โWhat did you say?โ
โO-ee gone,โ he whispered, touching my face with his slobbery fingers. โO-ee.โ
โI know, buddy, but heโll be back soon.โ Shifting him onto my hip, I moved from door to door, checking each room for the boys. โIโm going to get you some help. Iโll take you back to my house where thereโs no mean shouting โ and you can have a bath. A big bubble bath with ducks and everything. Weโll get that dirty booze off you.โ
โDaddy bad,โ he whispered, stroking my jaw with his chubby fingers.
โI know, buddy,โ I bit out. โBut I wonโt do that to you.โ
โDaddy ow,โ he whispered. โOw, ow, Daddy.โ
Keep the head, Kav.
Donโt lose it while youโre holding a toddler.
โYou like Bob the Builder?โ I asked, distracting us both from the very real fact that I was about to commit kidnapping.ย Again. โMe, too. I love Bob. Bobโs the bleeding best โโ
โFuck off!โ a familiar voice spat from behind the locked door at the end of the hallway when I tried the handle. โIโve got a knife.โ
โTadhg,โ I whispered. โItโs okay. Open the door.โ
โWhoโs there?โ
โJohnny,โ I told them. โDonโt be scared, lads. Iโm going to get you out of here.โ
โI want to go,โ Ollie said from behind the door.
โShut up, Ollie,โ Tadhg hissed. โWe donโt know for sure if itโs him.โ
โItย isย him,โ Ollie choked out. โHeโs got the funny voice, Tadhg.โ
โIt is me,โ I coaxed, striving for patience when all I wanted to do was kick down the door and drag them out of here. โIโm here to get you out, boys, but I need you to be as quiet as you can. Can you do that? Just whisper and donโt make any noise.โ
I waited a solid minute and a half before a click sounded and the bedroom door cracked open just enough for two blond heads to pop out. โHow come youโre here?โ Tadhg whispered, watching me with mistrustful eyes.
โShannon called me,โ I replied calmly. โI know heโs down in the kitchen with your Ma, and Iโm here to get you guys out.โ
โCan I come?โ Ollie asked, looking at me with a hopeful expression.
โOf course,โ I strangled out, voice thick with emotion. โIโm here for all of you.โ
โOllie!โ Tadhg whisper-hissed. โWhat about Mam?โ
โI donโt care,โ Ollie cried as he pushed back the door and slipped into the landing. โI donโt want to be here.โ
โWhat about my Mam?โ Tadhg asked, eyeing me warily as if he was weighing up his options. โCan she come, too?โ
โIf she wants,โ I forced myself to say. โBut I have to get you out without your Da seeing us first, okay? Then Iโll come back for her,โ I added, trying to find a way to sway him out of that room. โIโll take you to my place and then I promise, Iโll come back and get your Ma.โ
His nostrils flared. โReally?โ
I nodded. โReally.โ
He studied me carefully for a moment. โWill your Mam be there?โ
โYes,โ I replied evenly, sagging in relief as he loosened his grip on the door.
โWill she give us ice-cream again?โ
โDefinitely.โ
He glanced back to his room and released a sigh before turning back to face me. โOkay.โ
โOkay.โ I sighed in relief and gestured for them to follow me into Shannonโs room. โListen, the doorโs locked downstairs, so weโre going to have to climb out the window.โ
My heart was racing so hard, I was afraid the toddler in my arms could feel it. In fact, I was sure he could because Sean pressed his small hand to my chest and whispered, โBang, bang.โ
โWe canโt climb out the window,โ Ollie said in a hushed tone, when I leaned out the window with Sean in my arms. โYouโll drop him. And Iโm scared.โ
โItโs okay,โ I bit out, knowing there was no safe way to get three small boys out of a two-story window without killing them. โWeโll figure something else out.โ
โHow are we going to get out?โ Tadhg asked, sounding panicked. โAre we stuck?โ
โWe are stuck,โ Ollie wept. โDaddyโs downstairs and heโs going to kill us if he sees you.โ Sniffling, he added, โHe said we were all supposed to go to sleep, and weโre not asleep!โ
โSomethingโs wrong, Johnny,โ Tadhg strangled out. โWeโre in trouble, arenโt we?โ
โNo, no, weโre not,โ I assured him, heart racing. โI promise, Iโll get you guys out of here. Your Daโs not going to see us. Everythingโs going to be fine.โ Searching the tiny bedroom with my eyes, I said, โWe just need to find Shannonโs house keys.โ
โShe keeps them in her coat,โ Ollie choked out, visibly shaking now. โShe always hangs it on the bannister downstairs.โ
Nodding, I desperately tried to rein in my emotions as I shifted Sean onto my other hip and held a hand out for Ollie. He came willingly, wrapping his arms around my waist with a death grip. โDonโt be scared,โ I whispered, trying to console him. โWeโre going to creep downstairs as quiet as we can, okay?โ Looking to Tadhg, I said, โHold Ollieโs hand and stay right behind me.โ
โWhat if he sees us?โ they both asked.
โHe wonโt,โ I whispered, making yet another promise I wasnโt sure I could keep as I moved for the staircase with Sean clung to me like a baby monkey. โDonโt make a sound,โ I whispered. Barefoot and in their pajamas, Tadhg and Ollie both nodded and trailed after me without a word.
As I crept down the wooden staircase that was slippery and wet, I felt the worst pang of remorse in my heart for the way these kids had to live. When I was nine, Iโd been playing with Pokรฉmon and building forts. When I was twelve, my biggest concern was scoring a try. I couldnโt comprehend what these boys must be feeling.
โGood job,โ I whispered into Seanโs ear. The further we descended down the stairs, the harder he shook in my arms. โWeโre nearly there.โ Never in my life had I been so glad to see a khaki coat as I was when my eyes locked on Shannonโs one resting on the bannister. Slipping off the wet bottom step, I managed to right myself before toppling over. Regaining my balance, I slid my hand into the pocket of Shannonโs coat and almost wept in relief when my fingers closed around her key chain. Glancing back to Tadhg and Ollie who were standing on the bottom step, I gave them what I hoped was a reassuring smile. Both boys sagged in relief when I waved the keys in front of them.
โIt doesnโt have to be this way,โ I heard Shannonโs mother weep and I froze, heart jackknifing in my chest. Swinging my gaze to Tadhg and Ollieโs terrorized faces, I held a finger to my lips. โYou know I love you,โ she continued, voice low and hushed. โWe can sort this out, Teddy, but not if youโโ
โMarie, Marie, Marie,โ their father slurred. โItโs the only way.โ
A small whimper tore from Seanโs throat and I tucked his face into my chest, praying to all that was holy to help me get these kids out. โShh,โ I mouthed, rocking him in my arms. โShh.โ
โNot for them,โ their mother sobbed. โFor us maybe, but not them, Teddy.โ
โThey are us,โ he replied in an eerie tone of voice. โTheyโre all us.โ
โPlease,โ she continued to sob quietly. โI love you, Teddy. Donโt do this. I love you.โ
โThis is the only way,โ he replied calmly. โNow have a drink with me. Itโll take the edge off it.โ
Holding a hand up when Tadhg started to move towards me, I glanced around the hallway, wondering how in the hell I was going to get these kids to the door without their parents seeing us. The kitchen door was wide open and they would have a perfect view of the front door.
Forcing myself to breathe slowly, I kept my back to the wall behind me and edged closer to the door, gesturing for Ollie and Tadhg to follow me slowly. That bleeding staircase was like a deathtrap. Ollie slid clean off the bottom step and lunged for me. Wrapping his arms around my waist, he clung to me tighter than Sean was. โShh,โ I whispered when he hiccupped a tiny sob. โShh, buddy.โ
Trembling from head to toe, Tadhg skated across the floor to my other side, burying his face in my side, and my heart cracked clean open. I knew this kid was prideful. He was badass for twelve. To see him fall apart like this was sobering.
Smoothing a hand over his blond head, I carefully moved for the door with the three of them literally hanging off me, wary of the water on the floor, and never once taking my eyes off the kitchen doorway as I moved.
When I reached the front door, my eyes landed on their father slumped in a chair at the kitchen table, with his back to the door. Several empty bottles of whiskey and vodka were lined out on the table in front of him, and I knew if he turned around right now, I was going to kill him. Iโd made the decision the minute I heard his creepy voice and I was oddly at peace with it. If he put a hand on these children, I was going to bury the man.
Focusing on keeping my hand steady, I slid the lone key into the lock and slow turned it back, wincing when it clicked.
A loud cough from the kitchen muffled the noise and I jerked my head back to see Shannonโs mother staring right back at me.
Holy shit.
My heart stopped in my chest and for a few terrifying moments, I waited to see what she would do.
She nodded.
I hesitated.
She nodded again.
Keeping my eyes glued to her, I slowly pushed the handle down and swung the door inwards. She coughed loudly again, drowning out the creak from the hinges as I pushed Tadhg and Ollie through the small crack in the doorway.
With Sean in my hands, I turned my back to leave, but quickly swung back to face her, hovering anxiously in the doorway.
โGo,โ she mouthed, looking me right in the eyes. โGo now.โ
โWhat about you?โ I found myself mouthing back, feeling torn and conflicted.
โIโll have a drink with you,โ Mrs. Lynch said in a calm tone, eyes glued to mine. โA goodbye drink.โ
โGood girl,โ her husband slurred, shoulders slumped.
โIโll close that door first,โ she added. โWe donโt want to wake them.โ
โThatโs right,โ he replied, nodding his head. โItโs better if they sleep through it.โ
Standing up, Mrs. Lynch walked calmly to the kitchen door, face void of all emotion, eyes locked on mine. โGet them out,โ she mouthed slowly. โTake them away from here.โ
Stunned and confused, I hovered at the front door with her baby in my arms. โCome with me,โ I mouthed, urging her to justย run. โCome on.โ
She shook her head. โNo.โ
โWhy?โ
โJust go.โ
โIย canโt.โ
โGoย now!โ
โIโll come back for you.โ Feeling at a complete loss, I exhaled a ragged breath. โI promise.โ
โDonโt come back.โ She shook her head. โJust save my children.โ Her gaze flicked to Sean who had his face buried in my neck and a lone tear trickled down her cheek. โTell them Iโm sorry,โ she mouthed and then she closed the kitchen door.
Silently reeling and still clutching her youngest child in my arms, I slipped out of the house, quietly closed the door behind me, and ran for my car.
