I had been lured into a false sense of security yesterday by the very people that had brought me into this world with promises of action. However, the minute I was helped back into my bed and the nurse was called, it became pretty clear to me that I had been duped. It became even clearer when I was told that aย good nightโs sleep in my own bed would clear my crazy thoughts.
Fuckers.
Sleep didnโt ease a damn thing in my mind. When I woke up this morning, it was to thoughts of Shannon and a rage so hot in my stomach that I was sure I would develop an ulcer.
My body was restless, my mind shot to hell, the entire drive home from Dublin. When we finally crossed the border and re-entered Cork, I swear, I had never been happier to return to the rebel country, which was beyond ironic considering Iโd spent the last seven years plotting and scheming to get out of this place.
But things were different now.
Iย was different.
I had people to see and shit to attend to.
My first priority being Shannon.
In the past twenty-four hours, I had called the local Garda Station in Ballylaggin more times than I could count. After the seventh or eighth phone call with zero information being sent my way, relations had broken down between myself and Garda Daly, who had warned me that I was โskating on thin iceโ and to โcall one more time if I wanted to spend the night in the barracksโ.
I had plenty I wanted to say right back to him but my parents had confiscated both mine and Gibsieโs phones before I could cause any more damage.
Nobody was telling me a damn thing and that was the problem. All they had to say was โwe checked on her and sheโs fineโ. Thatโs it. Thatโs all I wanted to hear and I would have been appeased. Instead, I received the standard, โweโre looking into it,โ and โIโm afraid weโre not at liberty to discuss this with youโ over and over again.
It was complete bullshit.
โThis is bullshit,โ I verbalized my feelings aloud when my father pulled the Mercedes up outside our house andย notย Shannonโs like I had been promised, before killing the engine. I should have known better than to trust a lawyer, especially when said lawyer dropped Gibsie home and then proceeded to take the back road to our house andย notย the main road to Ballylaggin town. โI need to see her.โ
โNo,โ Mam answered for him as she turned in the passenger seat to give me a stern look. โYou need to lie down and rest. Doctorโs orders.โ
Resisting the urge to roar, I gripped the leather interior beneath me and hissed, โIโm fine.โ
โAnd we want you to stay that way,โ Mam agreed, โwhich is why youโre heading straight to bed.โ
โYouโre not listening to me.โ Scrubbing my face with my hands, I shook my head and looked out the window at the rain hammering down outside. โWhy is nobody fucking listening to me?โ
โBecause youโve been under the world of stress, Johnny,โ Dad explained calmly. โNot to mention the world of medication.โ
โExactly.โ Smiling sympathetically at me, Mam added, โYouโve had a terrible setback with the rugby, love. Itโs okay if youโre not feeling yourself right now.โ
โI know what Iโm saying,โ I shot back, furious. โI know heโs hurting her.โ
Mam groaned loudly and Dad turned in his seat, leveling me with a hard look. โJohnny, youโre throwing a lot of accusations around and you need to settle down before you get yourself into trouble.โ
โTheyโre not accusations when thereโs proof,โ I spat, glaring back at him. โI have proof.โ
My father rolled his eyes โ literally fucking rolled his eyes at me. โFriday night, you were so delirious that you were convinced Pat Kenny was in the room with you. Saturday night, it was the Russian from the Rocky film.โ
โSunday night, you accused the nurses of trying to poison you,โ Mam offered with a grimace.
โNow, itโs Shannonโs father?โ Dad finished and expelled a frustrated breath. โWhat are we supposed to believe?โ
โYouโre supposed toย believe me,โ I growled. โBecause Iโm telling the bleeding truth, Da.โ
Dad arched a disbelieving brow.
I threw my hands up, exasperated. โObviously, I was wrong about Pat Kenny and the Russian โ although the nurseโs trying to poison me is still up for debate.โ I shook my head, forcing myself to stay on track. โBut Iโm clearheaded now, and Iโm telling you that Iโm right about this โ Iโm right aboutย him.โ
โFine.โ Dad nodded stiffly. โYou say you have proof. Show it to me.โ
โOh, yeah,โ I sneered. โLet me just go pull Shannonโs body out of the boot for ya.โ
โLess of the attitude, Jonathon,โ Mam warned. โWeโre trying to help you.โ
โAnd whoโs helping Shannon?โ I demanded, voice cracking. โWhoโs helpingย her?โ
โJohnny โโ
โIโm telling you both that if you donโt take me over there, Iโll find my own way.โ
โYouโre not โโ
โIโm not a child,โ I roared, unbuckling my seatbelt and pushing open the car door. โIโm almost eighteen, dammit! So donโt push me into a corner and expect me not to push back.โ Grabbing my crutches, I clumsily maneuvered out of the car. โYou may be unsure, but Iย know,โ I insisted. โI fucking know! And if you wonโt help me, Iโll sort this myself.โ
โWhere are you going?โ they both demanded in unison as they filed out of the car after me.
Ignoring them both, I leaned heavily on my crutches and wrestled with my pocket for my phone. Yanking it out, I unlocked the screen and dialed Gibsieโs number.
โDonโt even think about it,โ Mam warned. โYouโre not going anywhere โโ
โI need you to come and get me,โ I said the second Gibsie answered, not giving him a chance to greet me. โPlease?โ
โSay no more,โ was his automatic response. โIโm already on the way.โ
โThanks, lad.โ Ending the call, I gripped my phone with more force than necessary and stared right back at my parents who were gaping at me in disbelief. I knew why. This wasnโt me. I didnโt act like this. I didnโt speak to my parents like I just had. โIโm not a liar,โ I told them. โNever have been, never will be.โ Trembling, I added, โI know what Iโve seen โ what Iโve heard. Iโm right about this and youโre making a very dangerous mistake by not listening to me.โ
โWe donโt think youโre a liar, Johnny,โ Mam sobbed. โBut weย areย worried about you.โ
โAnd Iโm worried aboutย her,โ I tossed back, voice thick with emotion. Rain was hammering down on all of us, but I wasnโt moving. Iย couldnโt. โIโm terrified for her.โ
โFine, Iโll make you an offer,โ Dad said, clearing his throat. โGo inside and lie down, and Iโll make some calls and see what I can find out.โ
I slumped in relief. โReally?โ
My father nodded and pushed his damp hair out of his eyes. โIf youโre that concerned, Iโll drive down to the station myself and make some inquiries.โ
โYouโre not fucking with me?โ I asked, mirroring his actions. โYouโll check on her?โ
Dad nodded stiffly. โBut I sincerely hope youโre wrong, son.โ
โYeah,โ I croaked out, feeling my motherโs arm come around my waist. โMe, too โโ
The sound of my phone ringing caused me to pause mid-sentence. Glancing down at my phone, I readย Joey the Hurlerย flash across the screen and my blood began to boil.
โWhere the fuck have you been?โ I demanded the minute I accepted his call. โIโve been calling you non-stop for days, Joey. Jesus Christ!โ
โYeah, I know,โ he replied in what sounded like a hushed tone. โItโs been a complicated few days here.โ
โComplicated?โ I balked and almost smashed my phone. โYeah, see that word doesnโt work for me,โ I snarled. โComplicatedย doesnโt explain or excuse the marks on your sisterโs body.โ Staggering towards the car, I ignored the horrified looks etched on my parentsโ faces and continued to rant, โComplicatedย doesnโt explain why she constantly flinches and cowers away from confrontation at school. Andย complicatedย doesnโt fucking explain why, when I asked her who was beating the shit out of her, she said yourย father!โ
โJohnny โโ
โYou told me to tell your sister that there was a family emergency that day you left her at my house,โ I continued, interrupting him, unable to restrain myself as my rage consumed me. โDo you remember that? You told me to tell Shannon that herย fatherย was back. And do you know what happened, Joey? Do you know she did โโ I had to inhale several calming breaths before continuing, โShe broke down and cried. She shook so fucking bad I didnโt know what to do to make it better! Iย couldnโtย make it better! Because you lied to me. I asked you straight to your face who was hurting her and you lied to me!โ
โI didnโt lie,โ was his clipped response, and it only infuriated me further.
โYou didnโt tell me the truth,โ I snarled, furious. โI was standing right there, asking you, fuckingย beggingย you to just tell me what was happening to her and you didnโt!โ
โI couldnโt โโ
โYou asked me to look after her, and then you took her away from me! You took her back toย him,โ I roared, chest heaving.
โBecause I had no choice,โ he hissed. โYou have no idea what Iโve been dealing with.โ
โThatโs a cop-out answer,โ I spat, running a hand through my hair. โEveryone has a choice.โ
โAnd every fucker has an answer for every other fuckerโs problem โ until itโs their own fucking problem and then theyโre fucked,โ Joey sneered. โYou think you know, but you have no idea.โ
โThis has been going on for years, hasnโt it?โ I demanded. โAnd you all justโฆburied it.โ
โIt wasnโt an everyday thing,โ he snarled down the line. โOur old man has a drinking problem. Iโm usually there to prevent shit going down. I try! I fucking try, okay? But I wasnโt on Saturday. I had training. I didnโt know โ I didnโt expect anything to happen. How was I supposed to know? I thought she was safe. I thought she was in Dublin withย you! His bad day is Wednesday โโ
โOh,ย Iโm sorry,โ I sneered, sinking down in the backseat of the car. โI wasnโt aware that he had a beating schedule! Is it only Wednesdays he likes to knock her around? Should I pick her up on Tuesdays and drop her back on Thursdays? Would that suit him?โ
โListen to me โโ
โWhere is she now?โ I demanded. โAre you with her? At your house? Is he there, too?โ I knew I was going to lose my mind if he gave me the wrong answer. In my mind, there was only one answer to this fucked up question. Their father needed toย notย be there. He needed to be as far away from her as humanly possible. I couldnโt fucking bear the thought of it. Putting his hands on her. Looking at her.ย Touching herโฆย โIs he near her?โ I strangled out. โHas he touched her?โ
โWould you just stop talking andย listenย toโโ
โI should have trusted my gut,โ I spat, interrupting him again. โI knew there was something off about your family. I bleeding knew it. That night you came and picked her up? Everything inside of me was screaming to keep her with me. And instead of listening to the red flags shooting up in my head, instead of opening my goddamn eyes, I pushed it down. Because I kept thinking, no โ no, this guy loves his sister. He wouldnโt stand by and let anything happen to her.โ I had to bite my knuckles to stop myself from driving my fist through the window of my fatherโs car. โMore fool me!โ
โFuck you, rich boy!โ he strangled out. โItโs easy for you to judge me. Youโve never seen hardship a day in your entitled life. I did everything I could for my family.โ
โExcept for the right thing,โ I shot back, livid. โYou are aware thatโs how he has so much power over you, right?โ I gripped the phone tighter. โKeeping quiet solvesย nothingย for you andย everythingย for him!โ
โSheโs sixteen, asshole!โ Joey roared down the line. โWhat do you think would have happened to Shannon if I went running to the Gards? Sheโd have been thrown into a care home, thatโs what! And thereโs more than just her to think about. I have three little brothers to look out for.โ
I opened my mouth to protest and then quickly stopped.
He was right.
I dropped my head. โFuck.โ
โYeah. Fuck,โ Joey sneered. โThis isnโt a movie, Kavanagh. This is our life. Itโs real, it sucks, and you donโt know a damn thing about it. Weโve been in care. Weโve lived through that. For Christโs sake, our brother was โโ he stopped short and exhaled a ragged breath. โWeโve been in the system, we know the score, so before you throw blame at me for not doing something, ask yourself why we would prefer to stay with him than go back!โ
It took me a moment to absorb his words before speaking again. โWell, hereโs what I do know. I know that Iโm on the way to your house right now, and I know that if I find him there, if heโs anywhere near your sister, Iโm going to bring the world of trouble to the scumbagโs doorstep โโ
โSheโs not at the house, asshole,โ Joey erupted in my ear. โThatโs what Iโve been trying to tell you. Sheโs at the fucking hospital!โ
My heart stopped dead in my chest.
โI took her there myself on Saturday evening,โ he strangled out. โAfter our old man beat her to within an inch of her life for messing around withย you. Some asshole teacher from Tommen called the house and reported that he found her getting off with you in a changing room, so fuck you back, Johnny Kavanagh. If this is on me, then itโs on you, too!โ
The line went dead and I just sat there, numb to the bone, feeling a million different emotions invade my body, and stared blankly at the phone in my hands.
I could hear my parents talking rapidly to each other, but I couldnโt make sense of what they were saying. A few seconds later, my father climbed into the driverโs seat and cranked the engine.
โI told you,โ I said, eyes locked on the back of his head as the car tore off down the driveway. โIโm not a liar.โ
