โI want a word with you, Jonathon Kavanagh,โ Mam announced, stalking into my bedroom with a basket of folded laundry in her arms. โRight now.โ
โJesus Christ, Ma!โ Scrambling for the towel I had discarded when I stepped out of my ensuite, I wrapped it around my waist and gaped at her. โDid you ever hear of knocking?โ
โIโm your mother, Johnny. I housed you in my body for nine months, so no, I donโt believe in knocking,โ she shot back, unfazed. โAnd stop fidgeting around, will you? Thereโs nothing you have underneath that towel that I havenโt washed, wiped, and talcum powered.โ
Jesus Christโฆ
โNow.โ Setting the basket down on my bed, she turned to stare at me, hands on her hips. โIs there something you want to tell me?โ
โLike what?โ
โItโll be better for you in the long run if you just confess now,โ she told me, eyes narrowed.
My mouth fell open.
Was she serious?
What the fuck did I do?
โIs this about training?โ I asked, confused. โBecause you heard Dr. Quirke. Iโm allowed to attend light sessions starting this week.โ I had been given the all clear by not one butย threeย different doctors last week. I had been put through fitness evaluations, strength training, pelvic examinations, and a whole heap of other bullshit before they finally deemed me fit enough to return to the pitch.
โNo,โ Mam replied evenly. โTry again.โ
I frowned. โItโsย notย about training?โ
โNope.โ
My brows shot up. โAre you sure?โ
โPositive.โ
I scratched the back of my head. โIs it aboutย rugby?โ
โLast chance,โ Mam said, tapping her foot on the floor. โMake me proud.โ
โI would if I knew what Iโm supposed to say,โ I choked out, feeling nervous.
โWell then,โ Mam said in that tone of voice that sent shivers down my spine. โLet me give you a little hint.โ Shoving her hand into the laundry basket, she yanked out a white, cotton bra. โImagine my surprise when I was hoovering your room yesterday and foundย thisย under your bed.โ
Aw shiteโฆ
Dangling Shannonโs bra from her fingers, Mam arched a brow. โCare to explain?โ
โWould you believe me if I told you that was mine?โ I offered weakly.
โItโs not your size,โ Mam growled before taking aim at me with the bra. โIn my house!โ she wailed, slapping me over the head with Shannonโs bra. โAnd then I went to tidy your bedside locker, and guess what I found in your drawer?โ She took another swipe at me with the bra. โA box of condoms!โ
โUnopenedย because I didnโt do anything โโ Diving into damage control mode, I tightened my hold on my towel and ducked around her. โMa, we didnโt have sex, I swear to god!โ
โIโm taking the lock off your door,โ she warned. โI mean it, Johnny. You canโt be trusted.โ
โFine,โ I strangled out, backing up as she prowled towards me. โI donโt need it, because Iโm not doing anything.โ
โThen why was your girlfriendโs bra under your bed?โ Mam demanded. โHuh?โ
โShe got changed in here after school a few weeks back,โ I lied through my teeth. โShe must have forgot to pack it in her bag.โ
โIs that so?โ
โYes! That is so.โ Feigning hurt and outrage, I glared at my mother. โJesus, Ma, I canโt believe youโd think so little of me.โ Huffing out a breath, I added, โI know Iโm not perfect, but knowing my own mother thinks that about me really hurts.โ
Mam narrowed her eyes. โDonโt you play mind games with me,ย Brains. I taught you everything you know, you little pup!โ
Fuck.
โLook, we havenโt had sex,โ I said evenly, keeping my eyes on Mam, hoping like hell sheโd believe me and release her death grip on Shannonโs bra. โI promise, Ma. We havenโt.โ I held my breath and waited for her to make her next move.
โI just want you to be safe,โ Mam finally said with a heavy sigh as she sank down on the edge of my bed. โNo, scratch that. I want to go back in time so that youโre ten yearโs old again.โ
โIโm not ten,โ I replied, edging closer with caution. โIโm eighteen next month.โ
โUgh, donโt remind me,โ she wailed, shoulders slumping. โThe years are going by too fast.โ
โItโll be alright, Ma,โ I assured her, not knowing what else to say. โDonโt be getting upset.โ
โItโs all happening now,โ she continued to weep. โYouโre back to training this week, and you have a girlfriend. One of these days, Iโm going to blink and youโll be gone on me. Off to France with the rugby. And then what?โ
โCome on, Ma,โ I coaxed, sitting down beside her. โI donโt even know if Iโm going to make the squad this year.โ
โI know you will,โ she replied, resting her cheek on my arm. โAnd Iโll be so proud of you.โ
โThen why are you sad?โ
โBecause youโre my baby.โ She sighed heavily. โAnd itโs hard to watch you fly from the nest.โ
โIโm not jumping any nest,โ I shot back. โIโd die on my own.โ
โJohnny,โ Mam admonished in a sad tone. โIโm being serious.โ
โSo am I.โ Wrapping my arm around her, I gave her shoulder a squeeze. โIโm being deadly serious. I wouldnโt make it a week without you.โ
She smiled. โYou think?โ
I nodded. โI know.โ
Mam was quiet for a long moment then, before asking, โAre you excited for today?โ Wiping her eyes, she turned to smile up at me. โYour first day back on the pitch?โ
โTerrified,โ I admitted.
Concern flashed in her eyes. โYou donโt have to go back,โ she hurried to say. โIf youโre not ready, I can call your coachesโโ
โI am ready,โ I cut her off by saying. โIโm just worried.โ
โAbout what, love?โ
โNot being the same,โ I muttered.ย Not being good enough.
โYou know how I feel about the rugby,โ Mam said. โIโve never made any secret of it, but you should know that I support you one hundred and fifty percent. I know youโre brilliant, love, and I know youโre going places. Youโre a phenomenal player, and you need to remember that. Itโs okay to be nervous. Youโve had a hard few months with your surgery and recovery, but know that there are other boys out there who wouldย killย to play like you do on your worst days.โ
โYou really think that?โ
โIโve been on the sidelines watching you play since you were in the minis in Blackrock,โ Mam replied. โAnd I canโt count the number of coaches and other parents who have come up to me, telling me that my boy was destined for the green jersey.โ Smiling, she added, โIโve always been proud of you, love, and Iโve always known you were brilliant.โ
โYouโve never said any of that before,โ I mused, scratching my jaw.
Mam smirked. โBecause Iโm still holding out hope that youโll take up golf instead.โ
โI doubt it, Ma.โ I shrugged sheepishly. โSorry.โ
โWell, just keep your brain safe out there,โ she muttered, standing up. โDonโt be letting any of those thugs hit you on the head.โ
โIโll do my best,โ I laughed.
โAnd no more naked Shannon in your room,โ she added, giving me a scathing look as she tossed the bra on my lap. โFor clothes changing or anything else.โ
