Chapter no 49

Keeping 13 (Boys of Tommen #2)

โ€˜I want a word with you, Jonathon Kavanagh,โ€™ Mam announced, stalking into my bedroom with a basket of folded laundry in her arms. โ€˜Right now.โ€™

โ€˜Jesus Christ, Ma!โ€™ Scrambling for the towel I had discarded when I stepped out of my ensuite, I wrapped it around my waist and gaped at her. โ€˜Did you ever hear of knocking?โ€™

โ€˜Iโ€™m your mother, Johnny. I housed you in my body for nine months, so no, I donโ€™t believe in knocking,โ€™ she shot back, unfazed. โ€˜And stop fidgeting around, will you? Thereโ€™s nothing you have underneath that towel that I havenโ€™t washed, wiped, and talcum powered.โ€™

Jesus Christโ€ฆ

โ€˜Now.โ€™ Setting the basket down on my bed, she turned to stare at me, hands on her hips. โ€˜Is there something you want to tell me?โ€™

โ€˜Like what?โ€™

โ€˜Itโ€™ll be better for you in the long run if you just confess now,โ€™ she told me, eyes narrowed.

My mouth fell open.

Was she serious?

What the fuck did I do?

โ€˜Is this about training?โ€™ I asked, confused. โ€˜Because you heard Dr. Quirke. Iโ€™m allowed to attend light sessions starting this week.โ€™ I had been given the all clear by not one butย threeย different doctors last week. I had been put through fitness evaluations, strength training, pelvic examinations, and a whole heap of other bullshit before they finally deemed me fit enough to return to the pitch.

โ€˜No,โ€™ Mam replied evenly. โ€˜Try again.โ€™

I frowned. โ€˜Itโ€™sย notย about training?โ€™

โ€˜Nope.โ€™

My brows shot up. โ€˜Are you sure?โ€™

โ€˜Positive.โ€™

I scratched the back of my head. โ€˜Is it aboutย rugby?โ€™

โ€˜Last chance,โ€™ Mam said, tapping her foot on the floor. โ€˜Make me proud.โ€™

โ€˜I would if I knew what Iโ€™m supposed to say,โ€™ I choked out, feeling nervous.

โ€˜Well then,โ€™ Mam said in that tone of voice that sent shivers down my spine. โ€˜Let me give you a little hint.โ€™ Shoving her hand into the laundry basket, she yanked out a white, cotton bra. โ€˜Imagine my surprise when I was hoovering your room yesterday and foundย thisย under your bed.โ€™

Aw shiteโ€ฆ

Dangling Shannonโ€™s bra from her fingers, Mam arched a brow. โ€˜Care to explain?โ€™

โ€˜Would you believe me if I told you that was mine?โ€™ I offered weakly.

โ€˜Itโ€™s not your size,โ€™ Mam growled before taking aim at me with the bra. โ€˜In my house!โ€™ she wailed, slapping me over the head with Shannonโ€™s bra. โ€˜And then I went to tidy your bedside locker, and guess what I found in your drawer?โ€™ She took another swipe at me with the bra. โ€˜A box of condoms!โ€™

โ€˜Unopenedย because I didnโ€™t do anything โ€“โ€™ Diving into damage control mode, I tightened my hold on my towel and ducked around her. โ€˜Ma, we didnโ€™t have sex, I swear to god!โ€™

โ€˜Iโ€™m taking the lock off your door,โ€™ she warned. โ€˜I mean it, Johnny. You canโ€™t be trusted.โ€™

โ€˜Fine,โ€™ I strangled out, backing up as she prowled towards me. โ€˜I donโ€™t need it, because Iโ€™m not doing anything.โ€™

โ€˜Then why was your girlfriendโ€™s bra under your bed?โ€™ Mam demanded. โ€˜Huh?โ€™

โ€˜She got changed in here after school a few weeks back,โ€™ I lied through my teeth. โ€˜She must have forgot to pack it in her bag.โ€™

โ€˜Is that so?โ€™

โ€˜Yes! That is so.โ€™ Feigning hurt and outrage, I glared at my mother. โ€˜Jesus, Ma, I canโ€™t believe youโ€™d think so little of me.โ€™ Huffing out a breath, I added, โ€˜I know Iโ€™m not perfect, but knowing my own mother thinks that about me really hurts.โ€™

Mam narrowed her eyes. โ€˜Donโ€™t you play mind games with me,ย Brains. I taught you everything you know, you little pup!โ€™

Fuck.

โ€˜Look, we havenโ€™t had sex,โ€™ I said evenly, keeping my eyes on Mam, hoping like hell sheโ€™d believe me and release her death grip on Shannonโ€™s bra. โ€˜I promise, Ma. We havenโ€™t.โ€™ I held my breath and waited for her to make her next move.

โ€˜I just want you to be safe,โ€™ Mam finally said with a heavy sigh as she sank down on the edge of my bed. โ€˜No, scratch that. I want to go back in time so that youโ€™re ten yearโ€™s old again.โ€™

โ€˜Iโ€™m not ten,โ€™ I replied, edging closer with caution. โ€˜Iโ€™m eighteen next month.โ€™

โ€˜Ugh, donโ€™t remind me,โ€™ she wailed, shoulders slumping. โ€˜The years are going by too fast.โ€™

โ€˜Itโ€™ll be alright, Ma,โ€™ I assured her, not knowing what else to say. โ€˜Donโ€™t be getting upset.โ€™

โ€˜Itโ€™s all happening now,โ€™ she continued to weep. โ€˜Youโ€™re back to training this week, and you have a girlfriend. One of these days, Iโ€™m going to blink and youโ€™ll be gone on me. Off to France with the rugby. And then what?โ€™

โ€˜Come on, Ma,โ€™ I coaxed, sitting down beside her. โ€˜I donโ€™t even know if Iโ€™m going to make the squad this year.โ€™

โ€˜I know you will,โ€™ she replied, resting her cheek on my arm. โ€˜And Iโ€™ll be so proud of you.โ€™

โ€˜Then why are you sad?โ€™

โ€˜Because youโ€™re my baby.โ€™ She sighed heavily. โ€˜And itโ€™s hard to watch you fly from the nest.โ€™

โ€˜Iโ€™m not jumping any nest,โ€™ I shot back. โ€˜Iโ€™d die on my own.โ€™

โ€˜Johnny,โ€™ Mam admonished in a sad tone. โ€˜Iโ€™m being serious.โ€™

โ€˜So am I.โ€™ Wrapping my arm around her, I gave her shoulder a squeeze. โ€˜Iโ€™m being deadly serious. I wouldnโ€™t make it a week without you.โ€™

She smiled. โ€˜You think?โ€™

I nodded. โ€˜I know.โ€™

Mam was quiet for a long moment then, before asking, โ€˜Are you excited for today?โ€™ Wiping her eyes, she turned to smile up at me. โ€˜Your first day back on the pitch?โ€™

โ€˜Terrified,โ€™ I admitted.

Concern flashed in her eyes. โ€˜You donโ€™t have to go back,โ€™ she hurried to say. โ€˜If youโ€™re not ready, I can call your coachesโ€“โ€™

โ€˜I am ready,โ€™ I cut her off by saying. โ€˜Iโ€™m just worried.โ€™

โ€˜About what, love?โ€™

โ€˜Not being the same,โ€™ I muttered.ย Not being good enough.

โ€˜You know how I feel about the rugby,โ€™ Mam said. โ€˜Iโ€™ve never made any secret of it, but you should know that I support you one hundred and fifty percent. I know youโ€™re brilliant, love, and I know youโ€™re going places. Youโ€™re a phenomenal player, and you need to remember that. Itโ€™s okay to be nervous. Youโ€™ve had a hard few months with your surgery and recovery, but know that there are other boys out there who wouldย killย to play like you do on your worst days.โ€™

โ€˜You really think that?โ€™

โ€˜Iโ€™ve been on the sidelines watching you play since you were in the minis in Blackrock,โ€™ Mam replied. โ€˜And I canโ€™t count the number of coaches and other parents who have come up to me, telling me that my boy was destined for the green jersey.โ€™ Smiling, she added, โ€˜Iโ€™ve always been proud of you, love, and Iโ€™ve always known you were brilliant.โ€™

โ€˜Youโ€™ve never said any of that before,โ€™ I mused, scratching my jaw.

Mam smirked. โ€˜Because Iโ€™m still holding out hope that youโ€™ll take up golf instead.โ€™

โ€˜I doubt it, Ma.โ€™ I shrugged sheepishly. โ€˜Sorry.โ€™

โ€˜Well, just keep your brain safe out there,โ€™ she muttered, standing up. โ€˜Donโ€™t be letting any of those thugs hit you on the head.โ€™

โ€˜Iโ€™ll do my best,โ€™ I laughed.

โ€˜And no more naked Shannon in your room,โ€™ she added, giving me a scathing look as she tossed the bra on my lap. โ€˜For clothes changing or anything else.โ€™
