Chapter no 47

Keeping 13 (Boys of Tommen #2)

I couldnโ€™t sleep. My brain was on high alert and every muscle in my body was locked tight with tension. Every time I closed my eyes and tried to fall asleep, I was bombarded with mental images of Shannon lying in that hospital bed, beaten and bloodied.

Her father was out.

He was walking around a free man.

In fucking Ballylaggin of all places.

Furious, I turned onto my side and tried to empty my mind, but it didnโ€™t happen for me. Feeling at a loss, I threw the covers off my body, cringing when Sookie groaned in her sleep. โ€˜Sorry, baby,โ€™ I whispered, padding across the room in the darkness.

Slipping out of my room, I flicked on the light in the landing and made the trek to the opposite end of the house. It had to have been at least nine years since I last slipped inside my parentsโ€™ bedroom in the middle of the night, but thatโ€™s where I found myself โ€“ at one in the bleeding morning.

โ€˜Da?โ€™ I whispered, nudging his shoulder as I towered over him, feeling like a creep. โ€˜Da?โ€™

โ€˜Johnny?โ€™ His voice was raspy and thick from sleep. โ€˜Whatโ€™s wrong?โ€™

โ€˜I need to talk to you,โ€™ I whispered, eyeing my motherโ€™s sleeping form, and praying that she stayed asleep. โ€˜Itโ€™s important.โ€™

โ€˜Go back to sleep, son,โ€™ he grumbled, rolling back onto his side and tightening his hold on my mother. โ€˜The skyโ€™s not falling, I promise.โ€™

I rolled my eyes at that last part. Fucking Chicken Licken. โ€˜Da, I really need to talk to you.โ€™

Raising himself up on his elbow, he peered up at me with a sleepy expression. โ€˜Really?โ€™

I nodded. โ€˜Really.โ€™

Yawning loudly, he threw the covers off himself and stood up. โ€˜Alright, son, put the kettle on.โ€™

โ€˜I will,โ€™ I hissed, covering my eyes, โ€˜when you put some clothes on.โ€™

Three hours and two pots of coffee later, we were still in the kitchen. My father was hunched over the counter in his jocks, nursing a cup of coffee, while I paced the floor like someone jacked up on coke. โ€˜There has to be another way around it,โ€™ I hissed, scratching my bare stomach. โ€˜He canโ€™t just get to walk around scot free after everything he put them through.โ€™

โ€˜Family law is complicated, son,โ€™ Dad replied. โ€˜Every case is different.โ€™

โ€˜Thatโ€™s not good enough โ€“โ€™ Swiping the coffee pot off the counter, I poured myself another cup and downed it in three gulps. โ€˜Goddammit!โ€™

โ€˜Iโ€™m cutting you off,โ€™ Dad yawned, reaching over and taking the pot away from me. โ€˜Or else Iโ€™m never getting to bed.โ€™

โ€˜You should have seen her tonight,โ€™ I continued, pacing and ranting. โ€˜Shannonโ€™s face when her brother told her that their father was out.โ€™ I shook my head. โ€˜She was fucking terrified, Da.โ€™

โ€˜Johnny,โ€™ Dad sighed. โ€˜Thereโ€™s nothing you can do.โ€™

โ€˜But thereโ€™s something you can do, right?โ€™ I shot back, feeling all jittery and energetic. โ€˜Canโ€™t you take their case?โ€™

โ€˜It doesnโ€™t work that way,โ€™ he replied with another yawn.

โ€˜Why?โ€™ I demanded. โ€˜Why doesnโ€™t it work that way?โ€™

Dad exhaled wearily. โ€˜Iโ€™ve already explained this to you a dozen times; the DPP made the decision to take it to trial. They have been appointed a solicitor through legal aid, and besides, Mrs. Lynch made it very clear that my services werenโ€™t needed โ€“ or welcome.โ€™

โ€˜Then sheโ€™s a fool.โ€™ I snarled, upping my pacing. โ€˜Youโ€™re the best.โ€™

โ€˜I am,โ€™ he agreed with a sleepy nod. โ€˜But her emotions are clouding her judgment.โ€™

โ€˜Sheโ€™s incompetent is what she is, Da.โ€™ Stalking over to the window, I rested my hands on the sill and exhaled a furious growl. โ€˜The womanโ€™s a liability and my girlfriend isnโ€™t safe in that house.โ€™ I swung around to glare at him. โ€˜None of those kids are safe with her โ€“ and especially not now that heโ€™s sniffing around again.โ€™

โ€˜They have social workers on the case,โ€™ Dad explained calmly, as he walked over to the sink and emptied the pot of coffee down the drain. โ€˜That means house calls and strict supervision.โ€™

โ€˜It doesnโ€™t mean shite, Da, and you know it,โ€™ I shot back, frustrated. โ€˜Sheโ€™s not safe in that house.โ€™

โ€˜Then what do you want me to do here, Johnny?โ€™ he asked, rinsing out his cup and placing it on the draining board. โ€˜All of the Lynch children would have been spoken to after Shannonโ€™s accident. They wouldnโ€™t have been returned to their motherโ€™s care without an investigation and of course, being asked about their motherโ€™s treatment of them. Obviously, the caseworkers involved found some merit in Mrs. Lynchโ€™s ability to parent them.โ€™

โ€˜Theyโ€™re all brainwashed,โ€™ I hissed. โ€˜Donโ€™t you get it? Theyโ€™re fucking terrified of being sent into foster care and separated, so they lie and cover for their parents because theyโ€™re under some screwed-up belief that theyโ€™re safer where they are!โ€™

โ€˜Whatโ€™s going on?โ€™ Mam asked, standing in the kitchen doorway with her white dressing gown wrapped around her. โ€˜Itโ€™s half past four in the morning. What are you doing up?โ€™

โ€˜Your son wanted to have a chat,โ€™ Dad explained calmly. โ€˜Nothing to worry about. Go on back to bed, sweetheart.โ€™

Mam arched a brow and gave my father her โ€˜do you seriously think Iโ€™m buying that shite?โ€™ look before stepping into the kitchen and heading for the kettle. โ€˜Is Shannon alright, love?โ€™

I stopped pacing and frowned at my mother. โ€˜How did you โ€“โ€™

โ€˜Know this late-night chat was about Shannon?โ€™ Mam filled in with a knowing smile. โ€˜Because I know you.โ€™ Making herself a cup of coffee, she joined my father at the island. โ€˜Now.โ€™ Taking a sip from her cup, she looked at my father. โ€˜Start talking, sweetheart.โ€™

With a resigned sigh, my father began to recap what we had spoken about, with me interjecting with the parts he left out.

โ€˜And there you have it, Ma,โ€™ I announced when my father was finished. โ€˜The absolute horror that is our justice system!โ€™ Swiping her mug of coffee off the counter, I tossed it back and moved for the kettle. โ€˜What am I supposed to do now, huh? Go to sleep in my nice, warm bed and wait for a phone call to tell me sheโ€™s back in the hospital โ€“ or worse?โ€™ Shaking my head, I poured myself another cup of coffee, splashing water all over the counter in the process. โ€˜She deserves a hell of a lot better than the life sheโ€™s been handed.โ€™

โ€˜I agree,โ€™ Mam said in a sad tone of voice. โ€˜They all deserve better.โ€™

โ€˜Then do something, Ma,โ€™ I pleaded, feeling at a complete loss. โ€˜Because Iโ€™m going to lose my fucking mind if I have to drop her home from school every day and wait until I get to school the next day to see if sheโ€™s made it through the night!โ€™

Tears filled my motherโ€™s eyes when she asked, โ€˜And her brother? Darren?โ€™

Frustrated, I took a swig of my coffee before answering. โ€˜He doesnโ€™t know anything about them,โ€™ I bit out. โ€˜Heโ€™s been gone for years. Heโ€™s all about his motherโ€™s best interests and not the kids. Joey doesnโ€™t trust him, and neither do I.โ€™

Mam and Dad looked at each other then, and I felt like I was being left out of a private discussion that was taking place without words. โ€˜What are you thinking?โ€™ I asked, anxious. โ€˜Can you do something?โ€™

Dad sighed heavily. โ€˜What do you want us to do, son?โ€™

โ€˜I want you to nail that bastard to the wall,โ€™ I told him. โ€˜I want justice for those kids. I want justice for my girlfriend. Itโ€™s not enough that he gets to walk away from this when they canโ€™t.โ€™ I turned to my mother. โ€˜Theyโ€™re completely fucked up, Ma. He wrecked them!โ€™

Both of my parents were silent for so long that I gave up on them answering me. โ€˜Forget it,โ€™ I growled, tossing my cup in the sink. โ€˜I shouldnโ€™t have bothered.โ€™

Stalking towards the hallway, I halted in my tracks when Mam spoke. โ€˜Weโ€™ll do what we can, Johnny.โ€™

I turned to look at them. โ€˜What does that mean?โ€™

โ€˜It means weโ€™ll do what we can to help,โ€™ Dad explained calmly, resting his hand on top of Mamโ€™s. โ€˜Now, go upstairs and try and get a couple hours sleep before school.โ€™

Feeling dejected, I headed back upstairs to my room with my shoulders slumped and my stomach in knots. The birds were singing outside when I walked back into my room and sank down on the edge of my bed to stare out the window at the dark sky. Grabbing my phone off my bedside locker, I unlocked it and scrolled through my messages, reading and re-reading every text she had sent me until I had driven myself half demented. โ€˜Fuck it,โ€™ I muttered to myself as I tapped into my phonebook and brought up her contact. I had my finger on the call button when my phone started to vibrate in my hand, signaling an incoming call from Shannon.

Heart racing, I clicked accept and put the phone to my ear. โ€˜Shan?โ€™

โ€˜Hi, Johnny,โ€™ came her hushed voice on the other line. โ€˜Did I wake you?โ€™

โ€˜No, I was awake,โ€™ I replied, exhaling a shaky breath. โ€˜Are you okay?โ€™

โ€˜Iโ€™m okay,โ€™ she whispered and I felt my shoulders sag in relief. โ€˜I justโ€ฆโ€™

โ€˜You just what, Shan?โ€™

โ€˜I wanted to hear your voice,โ€™ she admitted croakily. โ€˜Is that weird?โ€™

โ€˜Well, if it is, then Iโ€™m a weirdo, too.โ€™ Lying back on my bed, I folded an arm behind my head. โ€˜Because I was just about to call you.โ€™

She exhaled heavily into the phone. โ€˜Really?โ€™

โ€˜Really,โ€™ I confirmed gruffly. โ€˜I was thinking about you all night.โ€™

โ€˜Me, too,โ€™ she replied. โ€˜You, I mean,โ€™ she hurried to amend. โ€˜I was thinking about you all nightโ€“ not me.โ€™

โ€˜I know what you meant,โ€™ I told her, smiling to myself at her cute verbal blunder. โ€˜Are you getting up now? Itโ€™s only โ€“โ€™ Craning my neck, I checked the time on my alarm clock before saying, โ€˜A quarter to five.โ€™

โ€˜I thought you might be going to the gym,โ€™ she whispered. โ€˜I wasโ€ฆwell, I was going to ask you if I could come and just wait in the car?โ€™

A trickle of unease crept up my spine. โ€˜Whatโ€™s happening, baby?โ€™

โ€˜Nothing.โ€™

โ€˜Shanโ€ฆโ€™

She blew out a harsh breath. โ€˜Iโ€™m scared.โ€™

I sat straight up. โ€˜Do you want me to come and get you now?โ€™

โ€˜No, no, no,โ€™ she hurried to say, tone hushed. โ€˜Thereโ€™s nothing wrong. Iโ€™m just nervous.โ€™ She exhaled another shaky breath before saying, โ€˜Can you stay on the phone with me? You donโ€™t have to talk. I justโ€ฆI feel better when I know youโ€™re close.โ€™

Closing my eyes, I flopped back down and swallowed a furious growl. โ€˜Of course,โ€™ I managed to say instead, keeping my tone gentle. Settling under my duvet, I whispered, โ€˜Iโ€™m right here, baby.โ€™
