I couldnโt sleep. My brain was on high alert and every muscle in my body was locked tight with tension. Every time I closed my eyes and tried to fall asleep, I was bombarded with mental images of Shannon lying in that hospital bed, beaten and bloodied.
Her father was out.
He was walking around a free man.
In fucking Ballylaggin of all places.
Furious, I turned onto my side and tried to empty my mind, but it didnโt happen for me. Feeling at a loss, I threw the covers off my body, cringing when Sookie groaned in her sleep. โSorry, baby,โ I whispered, padding across the room in the darkness.
Slipping out of my room, I flicked on the light in the landing and made the trek to the opposite end of the house. It had to have been at least nine years since I last slipped inside my parentsโ bedroom in the middle of the night, but thatโs where I found myself โ at one in the bleeding morning.
โDa?โ I whispered, nudging his shoulder as I towered over him, feeling like a creep. โDa?โ
โJohnny?โ His voice was raspy and thick from sleep. โWhatโs wrong?โ
โI need to talk to you,โ I whispered, eyeing my motherโs sleeping form, and praying that she stayed asleep. โItโs important.โ
โGo back to sleep, son,โ he grumbled, rolling back onto his side and tightening his hold on my mother. โThe skyโs not falling, I promise.โ
I rolled my eyes at that last part. Fucking Chicken Licken. โDa, I really need to talk to you.โ
Raising himself up on his elbow, he peered up at me with a sleepy expression. โReally?โ
I nodded. โReally.โ
Yawning loudly, he threw the covers off himself and stood up. โAlright, son, put the kettle on.โ
โI will,โ I hissed, covering my eyes, โwhen you put some clothes on.โ
Three hours and two pots of coffee later, we were still in the kitchen. My father was hunched over the counter in his jocks, nursing a cup of coffee, while I paced the floor like someone jacked up on coke. โThere has to be another way around it,โ I hissed, scratching my bare stomach. โHe canโt just get to walk around scot free after everything he put them through.โ
โFamily law is complicated, son,โ Dad replied. โEvery case is different.โ
โThatโs not good enough โโ Swiping the coffee pot off the counter, I poured myself another cup and downed it in three gulps. โGoddammit!โ
โIโm cutting you off,โ Dad yawned, reaching over and taking the pot away from me. โOr else Iโm never getting to bed.โ
โYou should have seen her tonight,โ I continued, pacing and ranting. โShannonโs face when her brother told her that their father was out.โ I shook my head. โShe was fucking terrified, Da.โ
โJohnny,โ Dad sighed. โThereโs nothing you can do.โ
โBut thereโs something you can do, right?โ I shot back, feeling all jittery and energetic. โCanโt you take their case?โ
โIt doesnโt work that way,โ he replied with another yawn.
โWhy?โ I demanded. โWhy doesnโt it work that way?โ
Dad exhaled wearily. โIโve already explained this to you a dozen times; the DPP made the decision to take it to trial. They have been appointed a solicitor through legal aid, and besides, Mrs. Lynch made it very clear that my services werenโt needed โ or welcome.โ
โThen sheโs a fool.โ I snarled, upping my pacing. โYouโre the best.โ
โI am,โ he agreed with a sleepy nod. โBut her emotions are clouding her judgment.โ
โSheโs incompetent is what she is, Da.โ Stalking over to the window, I rested my hands on the sill and exhaled a furious growl. โThe womanโs a liability and my girlfriend isnโt safe in that house.โ I swung around to glare at him. โNone of those kids are safe with her โ and especially not now that heโs sniffing around again.โ
โThey have social workers on the case,โ Dad explained calmly, as he walked over to the sink and emptied the pot of coffee down the drain. โThat means house calls and strict supervision.โ
โIt doesnโt mean shite, Da, and you know it,โ I shot back, frustrated. โSheโs not safe in that house.โ
โThen what do you want me to do here, Johnny?โ he asked, rinsing out his cup and placing it on the draining board. โAll of the Lynch children would have been spoken to after Shannonโs accident. They wouldnโt have been returned to their motherโs care without an investigation and of course, being asked about their motherโs treatment of them. Obviously, the caseworkers involved found some merit in Mrs. Lynchโs ability to parent them.โ
โTheyโre all brainwashed,โ I hissed. โDonโt you get it? Theyโre fucking terrified of being sent into foster care and separated, so they lie and cover for their parents because theyโre under some screwed-up belief that theyโre safer where they are!โ
โWhatโs going on?โ Mam asked, standing in the kitchen doorway with her white dressing gown wrapped around her. โItโs half past four in the morning. What are you doing up?โ
โYour son wanted to have a chat,โ Dad explained calmly. โNothing to worry about. Go on back to bed, sweetheart.โ
Mam arched a brow and gave my father her โdo you seriously think Iโm buying that shite?โ look before stepping into the kitchen and heading for the kettle. โIs Shannon alright, love?โ
I stopped pacing and frowned at my mother. โHow did you โโ
โKnow this late-night chat was about Shannon?โ Mam filled in with a knowing smile. โBecause I know you.โ Making herself a cup of coffee, she joined my father at the island. โNow.โ Taking a sip from her cup, she looked at my father. โStart talking, sweetheart.โ
With a resigned sigh, my father began to recap what we had spoken about, with me interjecting with the parts he left out.
โAnd there you have it, Ma,โ I announced when my father was finished. โThe absolute horror that is our justice system!โ Swiping her mug of coffee off the counter, I tossed it back and moved for the kettle. โWhat am I supposed to do now, huh? Go to sleep in my nice, warm bed and wait for a phone call to tell me sheโs back in the hospital โ or worse?โ Shaking my head, I poured myself another cup of coffee, splashing water all over the counter in the process. โShe deserves a hell of a lot better than the life sheโs been handed.โ
โI agree,โ Mam said in a sad tone of voice. โThey all deserve better.โ
โThen do something, Ma,โ I pleaded, feeling at a complete loss. โBecause Iโm going to lose my fucking mind if I have to drop her home from school every day and wait until I get to school the next day to see if sheโs made it through the night!โ
Tears filled my motherโs eyes when she asked, โAnd her brother? Darren?โ
Frustrated, I took a swig of my coffee before answering. โHe doesnโt know anything about them,โ I bit out. โHeโs been gone for years. Heโs all about his motherโs best interests and not the kids. Joey doesnโt trust him, and neither do I.โ
Mam and Dad looked at each other then, and I felt like I was being left out of a private discussion that was taking place without words. โWhat are you thinking?โ I asked, anxious. โCan you do something?โ
Dad sighed heavily. โWhat do you want us to do, son?โ
โI want you to nail that bastard to the wall,โ I told him. โI want justice for those kids. I want justice for my girlfriend. Itโs not enough that he gets to walk away from this when they canโt.โ I turned to my mother. โTheyโre completely fucked up, Ma. He wrecked them!โ
Both of my parents were silent for so long that I gave up on them answering me. โForget it,โ I growled, tossing my cup in the sink. โI shouldnโt have bothered.โ
Stalking towards the hallway, I halted in my tracks when Mam spoke. โWeโll do what we can, Johnny.โ
I turned to look at them. โWhat does that mean?โ
โIt means weโll do what we can to help,โ Dad explained calmly, resting his hand on top of Mamโs. โNow, go upstairs and try and get a couple hours sleep before school.โ
Feeling dejected, I headed back upstairs to my room with my shoulders slumped and my stomach in knots. The birds were singing outside when I walked back into my room and sank down on the edge of my bed to stare out the window at the dark sky. Grabbing my phone off my bedside locker, I unlocked it and scrolled through my messages, reading and re-reading every text she had sent me until I had driven myself half demented. โFuck it,โ I muttered to myself as I tapped into my phonebook and brought up her contact. I had my finger on the call button when my phone started to vibrate in my hand, signaling an incoming call from Shannon.
Heart racing, I clicked accept and put the phone to my ear. โShan?โ
โHi, Johnny,โ came her hushed voice on the other line. โDid I wake you?โ
โNo, I was awake,โ I replied, exhaling a shaky breath. โAre you okay?โ
โIโm okay,โ she whispered and I felt my shoulders sag in relief. โI justโฆโ
โYou just what, Shan?โ
โI wanted to hear your voice,โ she admitted croakily. โIs that weird?โ
โWell, if it is, then Iโm a weirdo, too.โ Lying back on my bed, I folded an arm behind my head. โBecause I was just about to call you.โ
She exhaled heavily into the phone. โReally?โ
โReally,โ I confirmed gruffly. โI was thinking about you all night.โ
โMe, too,โ she replied. โYou, I mean,โ she hurried to amend. โI was thinking about you all nightโ not me.โ
โI know what you meant,โ I told her, smiling to myself at her cute verbal blunder. โAre you getting up now? Itโs only โโ Craning my neck, I checked the time on my alarm clock before saying, โA quarter to five.โ
โI thought you might be going to the gym,โ she whispered. โI wasโฆwell, I was going to ask you if I could come and just wait in the car?โ
A trickle of unease crept up my spine. โWhatโs happening, baby?โ
โNothing.โ
โShanโฆโ
She blew out a harsh breath. โIโm scared.โ
I sat straight up. โDo you want me to come and get you now?โ
โNo, no, no,โ she hurried to say, tone hushed. โThereโs nothing wrong. Iโm just nervous.โ She exhaled another shaky breath before saying, โCan you stay on the phone with me? You donโt have to talk. I justโฆI feel better when I know youโre close.โ
Closing my eyes, I flopped back down and swallowed a furious growl. โOf course,โ I managed to say instead, keeping my tone gentle. Settling under my duvet, I whispered, โIโm right here, baby.โ
