โShan, do you want to keep this?โ Darren asked the following Saturday afternoon, as he balanced on a ladder, holding a scraggly looking teddy bear out to me. โOr will we toss it?โ
โToss it,โ I told him, taking the bear and shoving it into one of the overstuffed black bin bags in the landing.
โYou used to love that thing,โ he mused, sounding a little sad, as I tied a knot on the now full bag and tore another one off the roll. โYou took it everywhere with you.โ
โI liked a lot of things, Darren,โ I agreed, opening the new bag up. โBut I grew up.โ
โYou used to like me,โ he muttered quietly.
โAnd Iโd like you again if you didnโt keep me stuck in this house,โ I snapped, flustered. โItโs Saturday.โ
โI know,โ he agreed with a sigh. โBut I need your help cleaning out the attic. We need more space and if we clear it out, I can move up there and give Joey back his room.โ
โThis is a joke,โ I muttered under my breath. โOur entire family is a joke.โ
โIs this about him?โ Darren asked. โIs this tantrum because youโre not allowed to go out with him?โ
Yes.ย I hadnโt seen Johnny since school yesterday and I was growing agitated. All week, Iโd only been able to spend lunch time with him, and I was quickly learning that wasnโt enough. Nothing ever seemed to be enough when it came to him. โNo,โ I snapped, dragging my thoughts back to the present. โItโs because I am sick to death of being a prisoner in this house.โ Sighing heavily, I added, โI feel like I am shackled to the walls, Darren. I canโt stand it anymore.โ
โWell, skipping school to hang out with him isnโt going to do you any favors,โ my brother responded. โYou were lucky I answered the call from your principal and not Mam,โ he added. โI covered for you, remember? Told him you were sick when you were off gallivanting around the countryside with him.โ When I didnโt respond, because quite frankly, I didnโt have any excuses, Darren sighed. โCome on, Shannon. Itโs your junior cert year. You know you need to put your head down and study for those exams in June. And he shouldnโt be your crutch. Itโs not healthy to get so attached to that lad โ tempting as he is.โ
โHeโs not my crutch,โ I strangled out. โHeโs my boyfriend, and itโs okay to want to spend some time with him.โ
โSomeย time,โ Darren agreed. โNotย allย of your time.โ
โI donโt,โ I bit out. โI only get to see him at lunch.โ
โWell, boyfriend or not, you need to help out with packing these bags, because I canโt clean it all on my own,โ Darren replied in a dismissive tone. โDo something productive with your day, instead of wasting it pining after some young fella.โ
โDo you know how Iโve spent every single Saturday for the last six years?โ I asked, and then quickly continued before he had a chance to respond. โCleaning, Darren. Thatโs how Iโve spent my Saturdays. Cleaning up after everyone in this house.โ
Darren sighed heavily. โShan, come on.โ
โNo.โ Feeling bitter, I blew out a breath and planted my hands on my hips. โThis isnโt fair. You promised things would be different when I came home from the hospital, but itโs not. Nothing changed. Sheโs still in there โโ I pointed to the closed bedroom door behind his back. โHiding away from her responsibilities, while Iโm still out here, cleaning up after everyone, and Joey is still dragging the boys along to their training and matches. The only difference now is that I have company.โ I gave him a meaningful look to let him know thatย heย was the company. โThatโs the only difference I can see here, Darren.โ
โReally? Because I see things a bit differently,โ he growled, climbing down from the ladder. โFor a start, heโs not here. Second, the fridge and cupboards are full. Third, none of you are walking around the place covered in bruises โโ
โHeโs still here, Darren,โ I shot back shakily. โHeโs just after taking on another form.โ
โWhat are you trying to say, Shannon?โ he asked coldly. โHmm?โ Looking furious, he crossed his arms over his chest and glared at me. โAre you calling me our father?โ
I shrugged, feeling guilty for what I had insinuated but unwilling to back down.
Darren laughed humorlessly. โYou know what? Do whatever you want. Go out and get yourself pregnant for all I care. Iโm done trying to smooth things over with you and the boys. In fact, I donโt know why I fucking bothered in the first place.โ
I remained silent as he stalked past me and thundered down the staircase, and it wasnโt until the sound of the front door slamming filled my ears, that I exhaled the breath I had been holding in.
Furious with myself and life in general, I continued to bag up the old toys, clothes, and general brick-a-brac from the attic until the landing floor was cleared. I neatly piled all of the bags at the top of the stairs and then I did something that surprised me. I walked into my bedroom, grabbed my coat off the back of the door, and shrugged it on.
Clambering down the staircase with my heart in my mouth, I hurried through the hallway, falling over strewn toys and bits of Lego on my way. I was suffocating in this house. I was drowning in my own life. I needed to get out. I needed something. I just neededโฆto open the door.
Flinging the front door open, I barreled outside. Not stopping, I broke into a run, pushing my body to its limits, whizzing past the familiar line of houses, then taking a sharp turn to the right and legging it down the dark lane. With no destination in mind, I pulled the hood of my coat up and kept going, desperately seeking that addictive taste of freedom I longed for with each passing day.
Three hours and a spare change of dry clothes later, and I was curled up on Claireโs bed, with a mug of hot-chocolate balancing between my hands, and the end credits ofย Dirty Dancingย playing on her television.
โI love him,โ Claire sigh/swooned from her perch beside me. โI swear, I will never get over that man for as long as I live.โ
โI thought you loved Johnny Depp,โ Lizzie quipped from where she was lounging at the foot of the bed, flicking through a magazine. โMake your mind up, girl.โ
โI love them both,โ Claire sighed. โBut Patrick was my first love, and you know how the sweet flame of first love burns forever.โ
Lizzie rolled her eyes to the heavens, looking thoroughly unimpressed. โI donโt know how weโve made it through eleven years of friendship.โ
โI missed this.โ I sighed in contentment and took a sip from my mug. โI missed you guys.โ
โWe missed you, too,โ Lizzie replied. โI had to suffer the adventures of Thor and his cat on my own the last time I came over.โ
โLeave Gerard alone,โ Claire grumbled. โSo he likes his cat. Big deal.โ
โHeย walksย his cat.โ Lizzie rolled onto her side to gape at Claire. โWith a glittery, jewel encrusted collar and lead.โ Narrowing her eyes, she said, โPlease donโt tell me you think thatโs normal.โ
Claire shrugged. โI think itโs cute.โ
โOf course, you do โ you think everything that big eejit does is cute,โ she shot back with a shake of her head. โWhat about you, Shan? What do you make ofย Gerard?โ
โI, uhโฆโ I looked at both girls before grinning sheepishly. โI think heโs great,โ I laughed. โI like his cat, too.โ
Claire beamed and Lizzie groaned.
โShannon has to like him,โ Lizzie muttered. โHeโs herย boyfriendโsย other half. Speaking of which, how is Captain Fantastic?โ
โHeโs good,โ I replied, blushing beetroot red.
โHeโs good,โ both girls chimed in mockingly.
โOh my god!โ Claire squeaked. โI just thought of something.โ Springing to her feet, she padded over to the television and switched it off before swinging around to face us. โI love twoย Johnnysย and Shannon loves another one!โ Shimmying around with excitement, her eyes danced with mischief as she said, โIf thatโs not fate, then I donโt know what is.โ
โYou know what, Claire?โ Lizzie mused. โI take back everything I have ever said about you and Thor being a bad idea. I think you should totally go for it with him. Youโre a match made in heaven.โ
โI know, right?โ Claire shot back with a smirk.
โUgh.โ Shuddering, Lizzie flicked the page of her magazine. โI can only imagine the children that would be created from that union โ curly-blonde unicorn-babies.โ
โI do love unicorns,โ Claire offered.
โUh-huh,โ Lizzie drawled. โSee, youโre halfway there already.โ
โHow do you know if youโre going to have an orโฆโ I let my words trail off as I took in the sight of both girls gaping at me. โUh, never mind.โ
โFinish it,โ Claire squealed, bouncing up and down. โAn orrrrrโฆ.โ
โGasm,โ I whispered, feeling my face burn.
โYou had anย orgasm?โ Claireโs eyes bulged. โShut the front door!โ
โWhoa,โ Lizzie muttered, looking begrudgingly impressed. โHeโs fucking smooth.โ
โDid you see his willy?โ Claire demanded. โOh my god, was it big? Itโs big, right? Ugh, I bet heโs huge and youโre so tinyโฆโ Swallowing deeply, Claire waved a hand around in front of her face in dismay. โOh god, I bet it hurt, didnโt it? How are you still in one piece?โ
โCalm down, miss Iโm afraid of the D,โ Lizzie shot back before turning her gaze on me. โDid you have sex with him?โ Unlike earlier, she looked intrigued by the conversation now. โOh my god, did he make you come your first time? Because thatโs impressive.โ
โWhat?โ I shook my head. โNo, no, I havenโtโฆI meanย weย havenโtโฆโ
โDid he go down on you?โ Lizzie asked instead. โUse his fingers?โ
โNo,โ I choked out. โHe just kissed me.โ
Both girls looked disappointed with my response.
โJust kissed you,โ Lizzie replied flatly. โWow. He sounds exciting.โ
โDonโt be a bitch, Liz,โ Claire chimed in. โWeโre not all fast movers.โ Smiling brightly, she nodded to me. โKeep going, Shan. Tell us about your kiss orgasm.โ
Flustered, I began to explain how I felt the other day when Johnny and I were on her bed, and again when we were in his car, dutifully ignoring the eye-rolls from Lizzie as I spoke. I sat with him at lunch every day this week, and while we had kissed many times before and after school, they were nothing like those other times. When I was finished explaining, I looked to my friends for advice. โIs that normal?โ
โIt sounds like you were close,โ Lizzie offered, interested once again. โAnd it also sounds like heโs a beast.โ
I blushed and Claire snickered. โA beast.โ
โImagine what he could do with those clothes off,โ Lizzie mused, smiling now. She was so pretty when she smiled. It was a rare thing nowadays, but when she smiled, it was wonderful. โI think you should ditch the clothes for your next dry humping session,โ she added. โAnd then report back to us.โ
โYes.โ Claire nodded eagerly. โSo Lizzie can give you some more of her experienced wisdom, while I listen in because Iโm nosey.โ
โIโm not a whore, Claire,โ Lizzie grumbled. โJesus.โ
โI know that,โ Claire hurried to assure. โBut youโve been with Pierce like a million times.โ Shrugging, she added, โWe want to know about it.โ
โYou donโt have to tell us, Liz,โ I mumbled.
โYes, she does.โ Claire shushed me before waggling her brows at Lizzie. โTell us what you know, sensei.โ
โYou donโt even have a boyfriend,โ Lizzie laughed.
โSo?โ Claire shot back, grinning. โI have an excellent imagination and an insatiable thirst for knowledge.โ
โFine, fine.โ Hauling herself into a sitting position, Lizzie shook her head and smirked. โDo you remember that Shakira music video โ the one Claire tormented us into learning the moves of back in sixth class?โ
โVividly,โ I replied, cringing at the memory.
โThat was the best song,โ Claire replied, eyes bright and full of that relentless optimism.
โWell, when youโre on top, itโs kind of like that.โ Her cheeks turned pink. โYou just sort of grind and rock your hips and rotate.โ
โWhoa,โ Claire breathed. โI donโt know if Iโd like that.โ Scrunching her nose up, she said, โI think Iโd like to be on the bottom.โ
โYouโd be surprised what you find you like,โ was all Lizzie replied.
I sighed heavily. โJohnny said he doesnโt want to have sex with me.โ
โWhat?โ Both girls gaped at me.
โHe said he doesnโt want to have sex with me,โ I repeated, mortified.
โWho doesnโt want to have sex with you?โ Claireโs older brother Hughie stopped in the hallway and arched a brow. His eyes widened then. โHoly shit! Youโre talking about Cap?โ
โNo,โ I blurted out, horrified. โI mean, I donโtโฆI didnโt โโ
โDammit, Claire,โ Lizzie snapped. โI told you to close your door when you came up with the hot chocolates.โ
โI didnโt expect perverts to be lurking around,โ Claire growled, narrowing her eyes at her brother. โGo away, creep.โ
โYouโre all too young for that kind of talk,โ Hughie stated, casting a meaningful look towards his sister. โEspeciallyย you.โ
โOh my god, weโre sixteen!โ Claire laughed. โAnd thatโs rich coming from the boy whose headboard is positioned directly against my bedroom wall.โ Walking over to her dresser, Claire began to bang her palm down on the dresser in a hard rhythm. โOh, yeah, baby, give it to me,โ she mimicked in a male voice. โOh, Katie, I love what you do with your tongue โโ
โClaire,โ Hughie hissed in warning. โPack it in.โ
Unperturbed, Claire continued to mimic his voice, speeding up the banging. โYes, baby. Now, now, I gotta pull out or Iโm gonna coooooโโ
Hughie slammed the bedroom door shut just as Claire screamed, โCome!โ and all three of us erupted in laughter.
โFuck off,โ Hughie roared as the sound of his bedroom door slamming filled our ears.
โWhat is it with brothers thinking they know everything?โ Claire snickered, flopping down on the bed. โEejits.โ
I nodded. โYou can say that again.โ
โI think you should text him,โ Lizzie chuckled. โJohnny,โ she added when we both looked at her in confusion. โText him with that disgustingly pink phone he bought you,โ she encouraged. โAnd see if he wants toโฆhang out?โ
โOh yeah, thatโs good.โ Claire waggled her brows. โHang out.โ
Excitement thrummed inside of me. โI donโt know.โ Pulling my phone out of my jeans pocket, I glanced at the screen and then back at my friends. โIโm not even supposed to be over here, guys.โ
โYouโve had a shitty week,โ Lizzie shot back. โOne filled withย wayย more drama than any of us could handle. I think you should text your boyfriend and spend Saturday night hanging out together.โ
โSheโs making all the sense today, Shan,โ Claire agreed with a grin. โYouโre already out, which means youโre already in trouble.โ Shrugging, she added. โMight as well make it worth it.โ
โWhat if heโs busy?โ I whispered, biting down on my lip.
โHeโs not,โ Claire chimed in. โHeโs at the gym with Gerard.โ
โHow do you know?โ
โBecause thatโs where they were when he called me earlier,โ Claire replied. โAnd thatโs where theyโll be until the place closes.โ
I gaped. โAll day?โ
Claire rolled her eyes. โHeโs your boyfriend, Shan. You should know that he spends every hour of his waking day working out.โ She flexed her bicep and kissed it before adding, โChasing those gains.โ
โYouโre so dumb,โ Lizzie chuckled.
โItโs true,โ Claire laughed.
โText him,โ they both said in unison.
Inhaling a deep breath, I opened my messages and began to tap out a text message.
โAsk him what heโs doing tonight,โ Lizzie said.
โOooh, see if he wants to go on a date?โ Claire added. โOh, oh, you can get dressed here.โ
โIโve sent it,โ I breathed, dropping my phone down on the bed.
Snatching up my phone, Lizzie read through my messages before narrowing her eyes at me. โHi Johnny,โ she deadpanned. โThatโs what you sent?โ
I shrugged and clasped my hands together. โThatโs okay, right?โ
โIf youโre four,โ Lizzie grumbled. โNo kiss at the end?โ
I shrugged, feeling at a loss. โIs that bad?โ
โNot if youโre texting your brother,โ Claire offered with a sympathetic smile.
โOh my god, switch it off,โ I groaned, feeling sick. โTurn the phone off.โ
Ping.
โAh, he texted you back,โ Claire squealed, snatching the phone out of Lizzieโs hand and climbing off the bed.
โHi baby,โ she began to read, only to stop and clutch her chest. โOh sweet Jesus, he called herย baby!โ Flopping back down on the bed, she added, โAnd he gave her two kisses at the end.โ She sighed in contentment. โI thinkย Iย just had an orgasm.โ
โGive me that,โ Lizzie grumbled, swiping the phone back from Claire. โHi baby, how are you doing? Can I call you later tonight? Kiss, kiss.โ
My heart galloped wildly. โTell him that he can call me,โ I said as I watched Lizzie type back a message. โDid you tell him he can?โ I asked when she set down the phone on her thigh. โLiz?โ
Lizzie opened her mouth to respond but the phone pinged again before she could respond. Glancing down at the screen, she grinned deviously.
โOh my god.โ A shiver of unease rolled through me. โWhat did you do?โ
โI told him that instead of calling you tonight, he could pick you up from here.โ She winked before adding, โHeโll be here at eight, so you better get ready.โ
โWait!โ Pressing my fingers to my temples, I forced myself to breathe slowly and not panic. โJustโฆgive me a minute.โ I inhaled several deep, calming breaths before asking, โIs this a date?โ
Claire nodded her head vigorously. Meanwhile, Lizzie looked at me like I was a brand-new species of human. โI donโt understand you, Shan,โ she sighed. โHeโs your boyfriend. You spend half of lunch every day with his tongue down your throat. Youโre meeting up with him on a Saturday night.ย Of course,ย itโs a date.โ
โShould Iโฆget him something?โ I asked, feeling my heart rate spike.
โNo,โ Lizzie shot back, appalled. โWhy would you?โ
โI donโt know!โ I flailed anxiously. โIโm just panicking, okay? What if he takes me somewhere? I donโt have any money.โ
โIt doesnโt matter.โ
โIt does,โ I choked out. โIt matters to me.โ
โYou could make him a mixtape?โ Claire offered then. โOr a mix-CD for his car โ if you wanted to give him something.โ
โThatโs a good idea,โ Lizzie mused. โWhat are you going to put on it?โ
โI donโt know.โ Leaning back against the pillows, I sighed. โMaybe itโs a bad idea?โ
โNo.โ Walking over to her desk, Claire grabbed her laptop. Itโs a great idea,โ she assured me, inserting a disc into the slot on the side of her laptop. โNow do it.โ
โDo boys even like that sort of thing?โ I asked, fingers hovering over the keys. โAoifeโs always making mix CDs for Joey and he never listens to them.โ
โWell, Gerard makes them for me and I love them,โ Claire replied. โGive him your thoughts, Shan. Find your feelings in songs and reveal them to him.โ
โIs that what you do?โ Lizzie asked flatly.
โAll the time,โ Claire groaned. โAnd I know he listens to them.โ Sighing, she added, โHe just chooses not toย hearย them.โ
โOh, dear god,โ Lizzie muttered. โThat boyโs a donkey.โ
โBut Johnnyโs not like that. Heโll listen, Shan. Heย alwaysย hears you. Oh here, take this โโ Tossing a permanent black marker at me, Claire smiled. โWrite something down on the disc once youโre done, so he doesnโt mistake it for one of Gerardโs creations.โ
โYou are so tiny, itโs sickening,โ Lizzie groaned an hour later. โIf I didnโt eat a bite of food for the next year and a half, I still wouldnโt be your size.โ
That would be the hunger,ย I begrudgingly thought.ย Be glad youโve never felt those kinds of pains.ย โDo I look bad?โ I croaked out, feeling nervous, as I glanced down at my outfit. โAm I okay?โ
โNo.โ She sighed and steered me towards the full-length mirror in the Biggsโs family bathroom. โYou look amazing and perfect and Iโm disgustingly jealous of you right now.โ
โTa-da,โ Claire squeaked, waving around a foundation brush in her hand. โYou look like aโฆlike aโฆsexy bitch!โ
Eyes locked on the mirror in front of me, I took in my appearance and blew out a shaky breath. โWhoa.โ
โI know,โ Claire agreed knowingly. โHot stuff.โ
โIโm going to freeze,โ I whispered, taking in the sight of the halter-neck red dress Claire had practically wrestled me into. She told me it was a dress, but I knew she was lying because I specifically remembered admiring the same red halter-neck last month โ when she wore it with jeans. To be fair, itย wasย a dress on me, reaching mid-thigh. On the upside, it was snug and not hanging off my body like most things I wore.
โThe jacket will keep you warm,โ Lizzie corrected, flicking the black, leather jacket I was wearing.
โAnd the skirt is for easier access,โ Claire snickered. โJust joking. Hey โ what size shoe are you?โ
โIโm a three,โ I replied, watching myself warily in the mirror. My lips were blood red to match my dress and my eyes were smoky. My hair was tousled up in a purposefully-messy high pony-tail that still reached my elbow in length.
โGod, how unfair is that?โ Lizzie grumbled. โI would kill to have small feet.โ
โMamโs a four. Hmm. Gimme a sec,โ Claire mumbled before darting out of the bathroom. She returned a few minutes later with a pair of black heels. โPerfect.โ
I eyed the six-inch heels with caution. โIโm not sure thatโs a good idea.โ
โItโs aย greatย idea,โ she coaxed and then dropped to her knees and shoved the shoes on my feet before I had a chance to object. โGood god, youโre like a Bratz Doll with those big, popping eyes and all that hair,โ she said excitedly, standing up to take in my appearance. โYouโre so cute it hurts.โ
โWell, sheโs not a doll, Claire,โ Lizzie reminded her. โSheโs a person and she looks โ stop it!โ Slapping the hairbrush Claire was inching towards me away, Lizzie smiled. โYou look gorgeous, Shan.โ
โAre you sure I shouldnโt wear a bra?โ I asked, feeling self-conscious.
โNo,โ Claire huffed. โYou should absolutelyย notย wear a bra! It will ruin the whole outfit.โ
โShan, if I could get away with not wearing a bra, then I would be roaming free 24/7,โ Lizzie said, squeezing my shoulder.
โMe, too,โ Claire offered supportively. โFlaunt those itty-bitty-titties, girl.โ
โDonโt you think thatโs a bit short?โ Hughie quizzed, cocking a brow as he leaned in the doorway of the bathroom. Frowning, he added, โI feel like I need to take off my jumper and put it on you.โ
โShut up, Hugh!โ Claire growled. โLeave her alone.โ
โFair enough.โ Holding his hands up in defeat, he said, โNow clear out of the bathroom, will ye? I need to get ready. Iโm picking up Katie in half an hour.โ
โKatieโฆโ Claire mocked, fluttering her eyelashes. โMake sure you wash your willy for Katie.โ
โThere is something very wrong with you,โ Hughie replied, scowling at his sister. โMam and Dad brought the wrong baby home from the hospital.โ Turning to me, he added, โBy the way, Johnnyโs parked outside.โ
My eyes widened. โH-he is?โ
โYay โ letโs go!โ Clapping, Claire butted Hughie out of the way with her hip. โIโm so excited.โ
โCalm down,โ Lizzie grumbled. โYouโre not going.โ
โIโm a vicarious spirit,โ Claire replied. โI live for this stuff.โ
