I bulldozed.
I didnโt need Gibsie or anyone to tell me what I already knew. Shannon was stone-cold silent the entire drive to Claireโs house, keeping a full seat of space between us, letting me know in no uncertain terms that I had, indeed, fucked up. Furious with myself, I didnโt say a word when I watched her walk into Claireโs house, terrified of making a bad situation worse.
Even now, as I heaved my body up and down on the chin-up bar fitted in Gibsieโs ensuite bathroom doorway, I couldnโt relax. I couldnโt breathe easy, because I knew in my heart I had made things a million times worse for her. Shannon was only across the street, but it could have been a million miles away for all the good it would do me. I was so fucking mad at myself, I could taste it.
โI should go over there,โ I announced for the fiftieth time in the space of two hours, and for the fiftieth time, Gibsie responded with, โNo, you shouldnโt.โ
He was sprawled out on his bedroom floor with a pen and ruler in hand, surrounded by half a dozen textbooks, and frowning in deep concentration as he used that weird yellow paper that helped him to focus and make sense of his own writing.
โWhatโs that word?โ he asked, holding up his History textbook to me. โRenown?โ
Locking my arms into place, I squinted at the text on the page before saying, โNo, lad, thatโs renaissance.โ
โRenaissance,โ he repeated, churning the word around. โWhat a stupid fucking word.โ
I shrugged and continued pulling my body up, feeding off the pain in my muscles as they burned in protest.
โCan I ask you a question?โ
โI already told you that Iโd give you my history notes, lad,โ I replied. โYou donโt have to ask again.โ
โNo, itโs not about school,โ he said. โItโs about rugby.โ
โOh?โ I frowned, interest piqued. โWhat about it?โ
โWhat do you think my chances are of getting one of those Academy contracts?โ
I paused mid chin-up with my arms locked tight and studied his face. โYou serious, lad?โ Heย lookedย serious. โYouโre not messing?โ
โIโm not going to go down the college route, Johnny โ I can barely handle school as it is.โ He shrugged. โMamโs been on my case about what I want to do after school, and I like rugby.โ Sighing, he added, โIf I donโt make a plan, Iโm going end up in the bakery with her.โ
โYouโre good at rugby,โ I agreed. โYou know The Academy were interested in you a couple of years back.โ
He sighed. โYeah, I know, and I fucked it.โ
โYouโre still only in fifth year,โ I reminded him. โYou have another year to turn it around.โ
โYou think I can?โ he asked, grey eyes locked on mine.
โI think you have the potential to do anything you set your mind to,โ I told him. โYouโve got the talent and thatโs ten percent of what it takes.โ
โAnd the rest?โ
โDetermination, dedication, and consistency,โ I replied. โThe 30/30/30 effect.โ
โI might need a hand with that,โ he muttered.
โWhat do you need from me?โ
โTo pull me into line,โ he admitted. โI think I can do it, Johnny.โ
โI know you can,โ I replied. โIโve always said that.โ
โI know, but I didnโt want it before.โ
โAnd you do now?โ
โIโm wasting my life,โ he said. โIโm letting all the opportunities slip through my fingers.โ
โYeah, well, Iโve been saying that for years, too.โ
โSo, what do I need to do?โ
โQuit smoking, cut back on the drink, and meet me at my house at half five tomorrow.โ
โThatโs a bit late in the evening to start โโ
โWho said anything about evening?โ I arched a brow. โ5:30am, Gibs. The early bird catches the worm.โ
โOh shit,โ he groaned. โYouโre going to kill me, arenโt ya?โ
I shrugged. โIf youโre serious, and you want it, then youโll get your ass out of that bed.โ
โLock your legs,โ Gibsie said then, turning his attention back to his book.
โI canโt,โ I bit out, breathing hard. โItโs too sore.โ
โWell, if you went home and rubbed one out, youโd feel better,โ he shot back, not missing a beat. โAnd youโd be able to close your legs.โ
โWhat would you have done, Gibs?โ I asked, ignoring his dig. โIf you were me back there?โ
โGiven what you know about her family?โ
โYeah,โ I grunted, breathless.
โExactly the same thing,โ he replied, confirming that I wasnโt alone in my madness. โBut I would have stemmed the threats of violence.โ He tossed his pen down and sat up. โThatโs her brother, lad.โ
I arched a brow and gave him aย donโt bullshit meย look.
โFair enough,โ he chuckled before admitting, โI would have killed him.โ
I nodded stiffly. โThank you.โ
โBut Iโm not saying thatโs the right thing,โ he added, climbing to his feet.
โDo you think sheโs still pissed?โ I asked, gaze flickering to his bedroom window. โAm I in trouble?โ
โYouโre always in trouble,โ he mused. โItโs like your thing.โ
โYou know what I mean,โ I grumbled.
โI donโt know,โ he replied, tone light. โIโve never had a girlfriend. I have no fucking clue of what the relationship etiquette in this situation should be.โ Grinning, he added, โI usually solve my problems with my tongue.โ
โGibsโโ
โIโm serious,โ he added. โMad at me? Have a lick out. Hurt your feelings? Let me eat you out.โ He shrugged. โItโs all I know, lad.โ
โIs that what you did today?โ I narrowed my eyes. โUsed your tongue to sort Claireโs shit?โ
He stared blankly back at me.
I groaned. โTell me you didnโt.โ
โIโm not telling you anything,โ he shot back. โLetโs just concentrate onย yourย fuck ups for today.โ
Fair point.
โOne day,โ I groaned, dropping my head. โOne bleeding day and I made a hash of it.โ
โYep,โ he laughed. โItโs a new record for you.โ
โFuck it โโ Lowering myself back down, I rolled out my shoulders, groaning in relief when my muscles clicked and popped back into place. โIโm going over there.โ
โGood,โ he agreed. โAbout time.โ
My mouth fell open. โBut you said I shouldnโt โโ
โHey โโ Gibsie held his hands up and grinned. โIโm the last person you should be taking advice from.โ Shrugging, he added, โIโm following your lead, lad.โ
โJesus, weโre fucked,โ I muttered.
โThat we are, buddy. That we are,โ he replied, slapping my back. โBut seriously, you really should know better than to take my advice to heart since Iโve clearly dug myself into a hole I canโt get the fuck back out of.โ
โWhatโs going on there, lad?โ I asked, frowning. โDoes Dee have something on you?โ
โNah.โ He shook his head. โNothing I canโt handle.โ
โYou sure?โ
โAbsolutely.โ
A trickle of unease ran down my spine. โGibs, if youโre in trouble, you can talk to me.โ
โAppreciate the concern, but youโre the one whose girlfriend is on the other side of the street, Johnny,โ he chuckled. โAnd besides, I have a plan.โ
I narrowed my eyes. โWhat kind of plan?โ
โOn how to keep my dick in my pants,โ he told me.
โWhat โย and out of the school secretary?โ
โYep.โ He nodded. โIโm injured now. Out of action for the next six to eight weeks.โ He gave me two enthusiastic thumbs up. โShe canโt touch me anymore.โ
โYouโre injured? Where? How? What theโฆโ I shook my head and gaped at him. โYouโre going to have to elaborate a little more for me here, lad, because if youโre using a picture of my cock and pretending itโs yours โโ He dropped his pants and I sucked in a sharp breath. โHoly shite!โ Gaping in horror, my hand automatically moved to cup my own dick. โWhat the fuck were you thinking?โ
โI was thinking I need a way to keep my dick out of the school secretary,โ he shot back, holding his dick in his hand.
โWhen did you do this to yourself?โ I demanded, outraged.
โDuring the Easter holidays,โ he replied. โI told you I was bored.โ
I balked. โSo you went out and got your dick pierced?โ
He shrugged. โItโs actually kind of genius if you think about it.โ
โGibs, you voluntarily allowed someone to stick a needle through your penis,โ I deadpanned, gaping at the piercing on the underside of his shaft. โThatโs not genius, lad, thatโs lunacy.โ
โItโs not so bad,โ he said in an upbeat tone, stroking the crown of his dick. โItโs almost healed, and itโs looks a lot better when Iโm hard โโ
โDonโt you dare pull on your dick in front of me!โ I warned him. โWhat the hell is wrong with you? I donโt want to see you hard!โ
โYou wanted to know my plan,โ he huffed, tucking himself back into his jocks. โSo, I showed you my frenum piercing.โ
Shaking my head, I hissed, โFrenum?โ
โYeah.โ He nodded eagerly. โLike a Jacobโs ladder without the ladder.โ
โWhatโฆhowโฆโ I gaped at him. โAre you planning onย addingย to it?โ
โNo,โ he replied. โNot for a while, at least.โ
โYouโre fucking insane,โ I choked out. โDeranged, even. And youโve scarred me for life.โ
โIโve scarredย youย for life? Yeah.ย Sure,โ he scoffed. โI showed you a piece of body art, lad. You showed me your gangrened ball sac.โ
โFor the last time, I didnโt have fucking gangrene,โ I snapped. โI had a torn adductor.โ
โWhatever you say, lad.โ Laughing, Gibsie sauntered out of his room with me trailing after him, still visually traumatized. โBut those were the most discolored balls Iโve ever seen in my life.โ
โI hate you,โ I grumbled, hobbling down the staircase after him. โI hope you know that.โ
โAnd I love you, too,โ he snickered.
โIs it sore?โ I asked, still grimacing at the thought.
โNah. Itโs just heavier. Itโs taking a bit of getting used to.โ
โAh, shiteโฆโ
โBoys, have a bit of respect,โ Gibsieโs mother ordered when we thundered into the sitting room to say goodbye to her. โThe Angelus is on.โ
Grimacing, Gibsie and I both blessed ourselves and mumbled off the prayers imbedded inside of us since birth as the familiar church bell rang loudly on the television. Sadhbh Allen was a religious woman, and for one solid minute, there would be no talking in the Gibson household while we waited, head-bowed, for the signal of the 6:01 news to come on.
โNow,โ Mrs. Allen said, muting the television when the news came on. Walking towards us with her giant, white Persian cat in her arms, she smiled brightly. โHow was school?โ
โFine,โ we both replied in unison.
โJohnny.โ She flashed me a warm smile. โHow are you feeling since Dublin, pet?โ
โIโm grand, thanks,โ I replied, offering a smile. I stepped forward to give Brian a rub while Gibsie lunged away from the cat. โIโm getting back on track.โ
โYour poor mother must have been beside herself with worry.โ
โYeah.โ Grimacing, I gently scratched Brian under the chin. โYou could say that.โ
โWhereโs Fa?โ Gibsie asked, using the pet name for his stepfather, Keith Allen. Heโd been in Gibsieโs life since the age of eight. It was short for father โ a term of endearment and sign of respect to the man who had helped raise him. A man who wasnโt quite his father, but much more than just Keith. Fa was the middle line and Gibsie had called Keith that for as long as Iโd known him. โI thought heโd be back by now?โ
โHeโs still on the building site, pet. There was a delay with a delivery, but heโll be home tonight.โ Mrs. Allen stepped closer to Gibsie and he comically dived backwards.
โKeep that beast away from me,โ he strangled out, eyeing Brian warily. โI donโt trust him, Mam.โ
โAh, heโs harmless,โ Mrs. Allen laughed. โYou wouldnโt hurt a fly, would you, Brian?โ
โNo, the flies are grand because his issue is withย me,โ Gibsie grumbled. โIsnโt it, Brian?โ The cat hissed and Gibsie leapt behind me. โYouโre going to have to do something about his behavior,โ he warned his mother. โI donโt feel safe in my home anymore.โ
โAnyways, I better get going,โ I announced, clearing my throat. I was fond of Gibsieโs mother and always enjoyed watching Gibsieโs cat tear strips out of him, but knowing Shannon was directly across the street was making me anxious. โThanks for having me, Mrs. Allen.โ
โAnytime, Johnny,โ his mother replied, waving me off. โDonโt be a stranger.โ
โIโm going with him, Mam,โ Gibsie told her as he hurried after me, narrowly avoiding a swipe of the paw from their cat. โIโll be home later.โ
โOf course, you are,โ she called after us. โBehave yourself, Bubba.โ
โKeep your head,โ Gibsie instructed when we stepped outside and he closed the door behind him. โJustย talkย to her โ donโt go in all guns blazing like you did earlier.โ
โIย willย keep my head,โ I grumbled.
โI mean it,โ he shot back. โNo talking shit about her brother.โ
โI donโt do that,โ I snapped, flustered. โBut I swear to god, lad, if I have to look at her with one more bruise, Iโm the one whoโs going to be in Cork prison, not her Da. Heโll be in a fucking graveyard with his son beside him if either of them puts their hands on her again.โ
