Chapter no 31

Keeping 13 (Boys of Tommen #2)

I bulldozed.

I didnโ€™t need Gibsie or anyone to tell me what I already knew. Shannon was stone-cold silent the entire drive to Claireโ€™s house, keeping a full seat of space between us, letting me know in no uncertain terms that I had, indeed, fucked up. Furious with myself, I didnโ€™t say a word when I watched her walk into Claireโ€™s house, terrified of making a bad situation worse.

Even now, as I heaved my body up and down on the chin-up bar fitted in Gibsieโ€™s ensuite bathroom doorway, I couldnโ€™t relax. I couldnโ€™t breathe easy, because I knew in my heart I had made things a million times worse for her. Shannon was only across the street, but it could have been a million miles away for all the good it would do me. I was so fucking mad at myself, I could taste it.

โ€˜I should go over there,โ€™ I announced for the fiftieth time in the space of two hours, and for the fiftieth time, Gibsie responded with, โ€˜No, you shouldnโ€™t.โ€™

He was sprawled out on his bedroom floor with a pen and ruler in hand, surrounded by half a dozen textbooks, and frowning in deep concentration as he used that weird yellow paper that helped him to focus and make sense of his own writing.

โ€˜Whatโ€™s that word?โ€™ he asked, holding up his History textbook to me. โ€˜Renown?โ€™

Locking my arms into place, I squinted at the text on the page before saying, โ€˜No, lad, thatโ€™s renaissance.โ€™

โ€˜Renaissance,โ€™ he repeated, churning the word around. โ€˜What a stupid fucking word.โ€™

I shrugged and continued pulling my body up, feeding off the pain in my muscles as they burned in protest.

โ€˜Can I ask you a question?โ€™

โ€˜I already told you that Iโ€™d give you my history notes, lad,โ€™ I replied. โ€˜You donโ€™t have to ask again.โ€™

โ€˜No, itโ€™s not about school,โ€™ he said. โ€˜Itโ€™s about rugby.โ€™

โ€˜Oh?โ€™ I frowned, interest piqued. โ€˜What about it?โ€™

โ€˜What do you think my chances are of getting one of those Academy contracts?โ€™

I paused mid chin-up with my arms locked tight and studied his face. โ€˜You serious, lad?โ€™ Heย lookedย serious. โ€˜Youโ€™re not messing?โ€™

โ€˜Iโ€™m not going to go down the college route, Johnny โ€“ I can barely handle school as it is.โ€™ He shrugged. โ€˜Mamโ€™s been on my case about what I want to do after school, and I like rugby.โ€™ Sighing, he added, โ€˜If I donโ€™t make a plan, Iโ€™m going end up in the bakery with her.โ€™

โ€˜Youโ€™re good at rugby,โ€™ I agreed. โ€˜You know The Academy were interested in you a couple of years back.โ€™

He sighed. โ€˜Yeah, I know, and I fucked it.โ€™

โ€˜Youโ€™re still only in fifth year,โ€™ I reminded him. โ€˜You have another year to turn it around.โ€™

โ€˜You think I can?โ€™ he asked, grey eyes locked on mine.

โ€˜I think you have the potential to do anything you set your mind to,โ€™ I told him. โ€˜Youโ€™ve got the talent and thatโ€™s ten percent of what it takes.โ€™

โ€˜And the rest?โ€™

โ€˜Determination, dedication, and consistency,โ€™ I replied. โ€˜The 30/30/30 effect.โ€™

โ€˜I might need a hand with that,โ€™ he muttered.

โ€˜What do you need from me?โ€™

โ€˜To pull me into line,โ€™ he admitted. โ€˜I think I can do it, Johnny.โ€™

โ€˜I know you can,โ€™ I replied. โ€˜Iโ€™ve always said that.โ€™

โ€˜I know, but I didnโ€™t want it before.โ€™

โ€˜And you do now?โ€™

โ€˜Iโ€™m wasting my life,โ€™ he said. โ€˜Iโ€™m letting all the opportunities slip through my fingers.โ€™

โ€˜Yeah, well, Iโ€™ve been saying that for years, too.โ€™

โ€˜So, what do I need to do?โ€™

โ€˜Quit smoking, cut back on the drink, and meet me at my house at half five tomorrow.โ€™

โ€˜Thatโ€™s a bit late in the evening to start โ€“โ€™

โ€˜Who said anything about evening?โ€™ I arched a brow. โ€˜5:30am, Gibs. The early bird catches the worm.โ€™

โ€˜Oh shit,โ€™ he groaned. โ€˜Youโ€™re going to kill me, arenโ€™t ya?โ€™

I shrugged. โ€˜If youโ€™re serious, and you want it, then youโ€™ll get your ass out of that bed.โ€™

โ€˜Lock your legs,โ€™ Gibsie said then, turning his attention back to his book.

โ€˜I canโ€™t,โ€™ I bit out, breathing hard. โ€˜Itโ€™s too sore.โ€™

โ€˜Well, if you went home and rubbed one out, youโ€™d feel better,โ€™ he shot back, not missing a beat. โ€˜And youโ€™d be able to close your legs.โ€™

โ€˜What would you have done, Gibs?โ€™ I asked, ignoring his dig. โ€˜If you were me back there?โ€™

โ€˜Given what you know about her family?โ€™

โ€˜Yeah,โ€™ I grunted, breathless.

โ€˜Exactly the same thing,โ€™ he replied, confirming that I wasnโ€™t alone in my madness. โ€˜But I would have stemmed the threats of violence.โ€™ He tossed his pen down and sat up. โ€˜Thatโ€™s her brother, lad.โ€™

I arched a brow and gave him aย donโ€™t bullshit meย look.

โ€˜Fair enough,โ€™ he chuckled before admitting, โ€˜I would have killed him.โ€™

I nodded stiffly. โ€˜Thank you.โ€™

โ€˜But Iโ€™m not saying thatโ€™s the right thing,โ€™ he added, climbing to his feet.

โ€˜Do you think sheโ€™s still pissed?โ€™ I asked, gaze flickering to his bedroom window. โ€˜Am I in trouble?โ€™

โ€˜Youโ€™re always in trouble,โ€™ he mused. โ€˜Itโ€™s like your thing.โ€™

โ€˜You know what I mean,โ€™ I grumbled.

โ€˜I donโ€™t know,โ€™ he replied, tone light. โ€˜Iโ€™ve never had a girlfriend. I have no fucking clue of what the relationship etiquette in this situation should be.โ€™ Grinning, he added, โ€˜I usually solve my problems with my tongue.โ€™

โ€˜Gibsโ€“โ€™

โ€˜Iโ€™m serious,โ€™ he added. โ€˜Mad at me? Have a lick out. Hurt your feelings? Let me eat you out.โ€™ He shrugged. โ€˜Itโ€™s all I know, lad.โ€™

โ€˜Is that what you did today?โ€™ I narrowed my eyes. โ€˜Used your tongue to sort Claireโ€™s shit?โ€™

He stared blankly back at me.

I groaned. โ€˜Tell me you didnโ€™t.โ€™

โ€˜Iโ€™m not telling you anything,โ€™ he shot back. โ€˜Letโ€™s just concentrate onย yourย fuck ups for today.โ€™

Fair point.

โ€˜One day,โ€™ I groaned, dropping my head. โ€˜One bleeding day and I made a hash of it.โ€™

โ€˜Yep,โ€™ he laughed. โ€˜Itโ€™s a new record for you.โ€™

โ€˜Fuck it โ€“โ€™ Lowering myself back down, I rolled out my shoulders, groaning in relief when my muscles clicked and popped back into place. โ€˜Iโ€™m going over there.โ€™

โ€˜Good,โ€™ he agreed. โ€˜About time.โ€™

My mouth fell open. โ€˜But you said I shouldnโ€™t โ€“โ€™

โ€˜Hey โ€“โ€™ Gibsie held his hands up and grinned. โ€˜Iโ€™m the last person you should be taking advice from.โ€™ Shrugging, he added, โ€˜Iโ€™m following your lead, lad.โ€™

โ€˜Jesus, weโ€™re fucked,โ€™ I muttered.

โ€˜That we are, buddy. That we are,โ€™ he replied, slapping my back. โ€˜But seriously, you really should know better than to take my advice to heart since Iโ€™ve clearly dug myself into a hole I canโ€™t get the fuck back out of.โ€™

โ€˜Whatโ€™s going on there, lad?โ€™ I asked, frowning. โ€˜Does Dee have something on you?โ€™

โ€˜Nah.โ€™ He shook his head. โ€˜Nothing I canโ€™t handle.โ€™

โ€˜You sure?โ€™

โ€˜Absolutely.โ€™

A trickle of unease ran down my spine. โ€˜Gibs, if youโ€™re in trouble, you can talk to me.โ€™

โ€˜Appreciate the concern, but youโ€™re the one whose girlfriend is on the other side of the street, Johnny,โ€™ he chuckled. โ€˜And besides, I have a plan.โ€™

I narrowed my eyes. โ€˜What kind of plan?โ€™

โ€˜On how to keep my dick in my pants,โ€™ he told me.

โ€˜What โ€“ย and out of the school secretary?โ€™

โ€˜Yep.โ€™ He nodded. โ€˜Iโ€™m injured now. Out of action for the next six to eight weeks.โ€™ He gave me two enthusiastic thumbs up. โ€˜She canโ€™t touch me anymore.โ€™

โ€˜Youโ€™re injured? Where? How? What theโ€ฆโ€™ I shook my head and gaped at him. โ€˜Youโ€™re going to have to elaborate a little more for me here, lad, because if youโ€™re using a picture of my cock and pretending itโ€™s yours โ€“โ€™ He dropped his pants and I sucked in a sharp breath. โ€˜Holy shite!โ€™ Gaping in horror, my hand automatically moved to cup my own dick. โ€˜What the fuck were you thinking?โ€™

โ€˜I was thinking I need a way to keep my dick out of the school secretary,โ€™ he shot back, holding his dick in his hand.

โ€˜When did you do this to yourself?โ€™ I demanded, outraged.

โ€˜During the Easter holidays,โ€™ he replied. โ€˜I told you I was bored.โ€™

I balked. โ€˜So you went out and got your dick pierced?โ€™

He shrugged. โ€˜Itโ€™s actually kind of genius if you think about it.โ€™

โ€˜Gibs, you voluntarily allowed someone to stick a needle through your penis,โ€™ I deadpanned, gaping at the piercing on the underside of his shaft. โ€˜Thatโ€™s not genius, lad, thatโ€™s lunacy.โ€™

โ€˜Itโ€™s not so bad,โ€™ he said in an upbeat tone, stroking the crown of his dick. โ€˜Itโ€™s almost healed, and itโ€™s looks a lot better when Iโ€™m hard โ€“โ€™

โ€˜Donโ€™t you dare pull on your dick in front of me!โ€™ I warned him. โ€˜What the hell is wrong with you? I donโ€™t want to see you hard!โ€™

โ€˜You wanted to know my plan,โ€™ he huffed, tucking himself back into his jocks. โ€˜So, I showed you my frenum piercing.โ€™

Shaking my head, I hissed, โ€˜Frenum?โ€™

โ€˜Yeah.โ€™ He nodded eagerly. โ€˜Like a Jacobโ€™s ladder without the ladder.โ€™

โ€˜Whatโ€ฆhowโ€ฆโ€™ I gaped at him. โ€˜Are you planning onย addingย to it?โ€™

โ€˜No,โ€™ he replied. โ€˜Not for a while, at least.โ€™

โ€˜Youโ€™re fucking insane,โ€™ I choked out. โ€˜Deranged, even. And youโ€™ve scarred me for life.โ€™

โ€˜Iโ€™ve scarredย youย for life? Yeah.ย Sure,โ€™ he scoffed. โ€˜I showed you a piece of body art, lad. You showed me your gangrened ball sac.โ€™

โ€˜For the last time, I didnโ€™t have fucking gangrene,โ€™ I snapped. โ€˜I had a torn adductor.โ€™

โ€˜Whatever you say, lad.โ€™ Laughing, Gibsie sauntered out of his room with me trailing after him, still visually traumatized. โ€˜But those were the most discolored balls Iโ€™ve ever seen in my life.โ€™

โ€˜I hate you,โ€™ I grumbled, hobbling down the staircase after him. โ€˜I hope you know that.โ€™

โ€˜And I love you, too,โ€™ he snickered.

โ€˜Is it sore?โ€™ I asked, still grimacing at the thought.

โ€˜Nah. Itโ€™s just heavier. Itโ€™s taking a bit of getting used to.โ€™

โ€˜Ah, shiteโ€ฆโ€™

โ€˜Boys, have a bit of respect,โ€™ Gibsieโ€™s mother ordered when we thundered into the sitting room to say goodbye to her. โ€˜The Angelus is on.โ€™

Grimacing, Gibsie and I both blessed ourselves and mumbled off the prayers imbedded inside of us since birth as the familiar church bell rang loudly on the television. Sadhbh Allen was a religious woman, and for one solid minute, there would be no talking in the Gibson household while we waited, head-bowed, for the signal of the 6:01 news to come on.

โ€˜Now,โ€™ Mrs. Allen said, muting the television when the news came on. Walking towards us with her giant, white Persian cat in her arms, she smiled brightly. โ€˜How was school?โ€™

โ€˜Fine,โ€™ we both replied in unison.

โ€˜Johnny.โ€™ She flashed me a warm smile. โ€˜How are you feeling since Dublin, pet?โ€™

โ€˜Iโ€™m grand, thanks,โ€™ I replied, offering a smile. I stepped forward to give Brian a rub while Gibsie lunged away from the cat. โ€˜Iโ€™m getting back on track.โ€™

โ€˜Your poor mother must have been beside herself with worry.โ€™

โ€˜Yeah.โ€™ Grimacing, I gently scratched Brian under the chin. โ€˜You could say that.โ€™

โ€˜Whereโ€™s Fa?โ€™ Gibsie asked, using the pet name for his stepfather, Keith Allen. Heโ€™d been in Gibsieโ€™s life since the age of eight. It was short for father โ€“ a term of endearment and sign of respect to the man who had helped raise him. A man who wasnโ€™t quite his father, but much more than just Keith. Fa was the middle line and Gibsie had called Keith that for as long as Iโ€™d known him. โ€˜I thought heโ€™d be back by now?โ€™

โ€˜Heโ€™s still on the building site, pet. There was a delay with a delivery, but heโ€™ll be home tonight.โ€™ Mrs. Allen stepped closer to Gibsie and he comically dived backwards.

โ€˜Keep that beast away from me,โ€™ he strangled out, eyeing Brian warily. โ€˜I donโ€™t trust him, Mam.โ€™

โ€˜Ah, heโ€™s harmless,โ€™ Mrs. Allen laughed. โ€˜You wouldnโ€™t hurt a fly, would you, Brian?โ€™

โ€˜No, the flies are grand because his issue is withย me,โ€™ Gibsie grumbled. โ€˜Isnโ€™t it, Brian?โ€™ The cat hissed and Gibsie leapt behind me. โ€˜Youโ€™re going to have to do something about his behavior,โ€™ he warned his mother. โ€˜I donโ€™t feel safe in my home anymore.โ€™

โ€˜Anyways, I better get going,โ€™ I announced, clearing my throat. I was fond of Gibsieโ€™s mother and always enjoyed watching Gibsieโ€™s cat tear strips out of him, but knowing Shannon was directly across the street was making me anxious. โ€˜Thanks for having me, Mrs. Allen.โ€™

โ€˜Anytime, Johnny,โ€™ his mother replied, waving me off. โ€˜Donโ€™t be a stranger.โ€™

โ€˜Iโ€™m going with him, Mam,โ€™ Gibsie told her as he hurried after me, narrowly avoiding a swipe of the paw from their cat. โ€˜Iโ€™ll be home later.โ€™

โ€˜Of course, you are,โ€™ she called after us. โ€˜Behave yourself, Bubba.โ€™

โ€˜Keep your head,โ€™ Gibsie instructed when we stepped outside and he closed the door behind him. โ€˜Justย talkย to her โ€“ donโ€™t go in all guns blazing like you did earlier.โ€™

โ€˜Iย willย keep my head,โ€™ I grumbled.

โ€˜I mean it,โ€™ he shot back. โ€˜No talking shit about her brother.โ€™

โ€˜I donโ€™t do that,โ€™ I snapped, flustered. โ€˜But I swear to god, lad, if I have to look at her with one more bruise, Iโ€™m the one whoโ€™s going to be in Cork prison, not her Da. Heโ€™ll be in a fucking graveyard with his son beside him if either of them puts their hands on her again.โ€™
