โShannon?โ Lizzie Youngโs voice filled my ears as I sat on the closed-lid toilet, inside one of the stalls in the girls changing rooms in the PE hall with my uneaten sandwich on my lap. โAre you in here?โ
Iโd skipped Maths this morning. In fact, Iโd skipped all six classes before big lunch. Iโd gotten all the way to the classroom door this morning, Iโd even put my hand on the door-handle, but I just couldnโt make myself go inside and face everyone.
I justย couldnโtย do it.
At first, I had debated just leaving school entirely and going home, but when I got to the main entrance gates, I had an unmerciful panic attack, with my fatherโs face at the fore point of my anguish. Spinning on my heels, I had hurried out of the rain, into the PE hall and hadnโt left since.
โHey,โ a voice said from somewhere above me then, causing me to almost jump out of my own skin.
โOh my god!โ Glancing up, my eyes landed on Lizzie, who was leaning over the top of the cubicle partition with a mildly amused expression on her face. โLizzie, you almost gave me a heart attack.โ
She arched a finely plucked brow. โCozy down there?โ
โShan!โ Claireโs face popped up from the other side of the cubicle partition. โWhat are you doing in here?โ
โHiding,โ I admitted, red-faced.
โFrom what?โ
โSchool,โ I offered with a weary sigh, as I stood up and unlocked the door. โThe people in it.โ Stepping out of the cubicle, I walked over to the sinks, leaned against one of the cold, porcelain basins, and sighed. โLife.โ
โWell, thatโs a shitty thing to do,โ Lizzie shot back. Hopping down from the toilet bowl she had been balancing on, she wiped her hands on her school skirt and stalked towards me. Her dark-blonde hair was pulled back in a severe bun, and her lips were painted a scarlet-red color, making her look even more beautiful than normal. โWe were worried to death about you,โ she added, before pulling me into a hug. โYou little dope.โ
โItโs true,โ Claire offered, scrambling down from the toilet bowl she had been standing on. โNot the dope part,โ she added, coming to join us in a hug. โThat was mean and unnecessary, Lizzie โ weโve talked about this. But the worried to death part.โ She nodded. โWe were definitely half way there.โ
โSorry guys,โ I whispered, feeling swamped by my friends. Both girls were tall, both were blonde, and both were looking at me like I had the answers to all their questions, and maybe I did, but that didnโt mean I could ever tell them. โI justโฆI needed โโ
โA minute?โ Lizzie offered with a knowing smile. โYeah, I think youโre owed a few of those.โ
โAm I in trouble for skipping my classes?โ
โNo.โ Claire shook her head firmly. โMr. Twomeyโs just worried about you. He sent us to look for you, actually. Weโve literally been out of class all day, roaming the school for you.โ
โAnd itโs a big school,โ Lizzie offered dryly. โAnd youโre a tiny person.โ
โI was just in here,โ I confessed, feeling terrible now.
โYeah, the P.E hall?โ Lizzie laughed softly. โWas honestly the last place either of us expected you to be.โ
โHe called us to the office first thing, too,โ Claire added. โThey all want to help, Shan.โ
โI donโt want to talk to him or any of the teachers,โ I strangled out. โI told Darren to tell them that I didnโt want to talk.โ I shook my head, feeling a little faint at the thought. โI donโt want to talk to anyone.โ
โI know,โ Claire soothed. โAnd you donโt have to.โ
โThatโs why he called us in,โ Lizzie offered calmly.
โYeah.โ Claire nodded. โHe wanted to make sure that we were looking out for you.โ
โLike he even had to ask,โ Lizzie scoffed.
โCome on,โ Claire said as she grabbed my schoolbag off the slippery tiles and slung it over her shoulder. โWeโre going to lunch.โ
โAnd then weโre going to class,โ Lizzie added as she pushed me out of the bathroom. โTogether.โ
โIโm scared,โ I blurted out, feeling that familiar pang of panic claw its way up my throat as we walked out of the hall and down the steep steps.
โWe know,โ Claire replied, wrapping an arm around me as we headed through the courtyard. โBut itโs going to be okay.โ
โYes, it is,โ Lizzie agreed, folding a loose lock of her blonde hair behind her ear. โBecause youโre not alone in this.โ
โIโm sorry, guys,โ I muttered, feeling terrible. โIโm a pain in the ass.โ
โYeah, but youโreย ourย pain in the ass,โ Lizzie countered. โAnd we happen to be sort of fond of you.โ
โThanks,โ I chuckled. โI think?โ
โBy the way,โ Lizzie paused mid-step to look at me. โDo you want to talk about what happened?โ
โNo,โ I croaked out.
โYouโre sure?โ
โI justโฆjust be normal with me, Liz,โ I pleaded quietly. โThatโs all I need.โ
โFair enough.โ Lizzie nodded and continued towards the main building. โJust know that weโre here.โ
โSpeaking of normal,โ Claire injected, thankfully changing the subject. โAre you going to be normal in here?โ she asked Lizzie. Yanking open the glass door, she gestured to us to file in. โNo arguments, okay?โ We walked inside and Claire hurried in after us. โNo bitching at Gerard or any of the boys.โ
Lizzie shrugged noncommittally, striding off in the direction of the lunch hall. โIf Thor and his gang of gimps steer clear of our table, we wonโt have a problem.โ
โHey โ my brotherโs in that gang of gimps,โ Claire huffed.
โYou know what they say, Claire โ if you lie with dogs, you get fleas.โ
โThen you must be riddled with them,โ Claire shot back. โSince all you seem to be doing lately is lyingย underย Pierce ร Neill.โ Lizzieโs cheeks turned pink and Claire arched a perfectly shaped brow. โNothing to say? Uh-huh. Thatโs what I thought.โ
โGuys, donโt fight,โ I puffed out as I hurried to keep up with their long strides, only to freeze on the mortal spot when we reached the archway. My heart jackknifed in my chest when my eyes landed on Johnny.
He was sitting at his usual spot at the end of the banquet-like table with his back to me. He had his feet propped up on a chair and his arms folded behind his head. His hair was all mussed up, looking like heโd spent the morning dragging his hands through it.
Several of the girls sitting at nearby tables were all staring at him with the same hungry expression Iโd seen him provoke from girls in the hallways.
The same hungry expression he provoked from meโฆ
He wasnโt paying an ounce of attention to the girls, or anyone else for that matter. He was staring straight ahead, attention glued to the table I usually sat at with the girls.
โUh,โ I cleared my throat, feeling nervous. โI have something to tell you.โ Catching ahold of their sleeves, I tugged the girls away from the archway, feeling my heart race at a million miles an hour as my gaze soaked him in. โItโs about Johnny,โ I added, tearing my gaze away from him. โAnd me.โ
โOh god.โ Lizzie narrowed her eyes. โWhat did you do with Captain Fantastic?โ
โYes?โ Claireโs eyes widened in excitement. โWhat did you do?โ
โIโฆโ I could feel my cheeks turning red. โWell, see, heโs myโฆand Iโm hisโฆโ Flustered, I broke off and pressed a hand to my forehead. โHe asked me to be his girlfriend and I said yes.โ
โShut the front door!โ Claire squealed, clapping and bouncing excitedly. โOh my god! Oh my god!โ
I gave her a weak smile. โYeah.โ
โYouโre his girlfriend?โ Lizzie frowned in confusion. โBut he doesnโt do the whole girlfriend thing.โ
โWell, he does now,โ Claire hooted, still bouncing like a playful kitten. โI swear, this is the best day!โ
โYou know, I donโt even know why Iโm surprised,โ Lizzie grumbled. โThis has been brewing for months.โ
โIt really has,โ Claire replied, still grinning as she nodded in agreement. โMonths and months.โ
โIt literally just happened today,โ I told them.
โYeah, sure, because Johnny Kavanagh blows a head gasket for every girl in this school,โ Lizzie shot back sarcastically. โI knew that day before Easter break, when you ran out of school and he went all batshit in the courtyard, that something was going on between you. Hell, even before that, he was always watching you like a creeper.โ
โThey wereย kissing,โ Claire chimed in. โIn his bedroom.โ
โClaire!โ I hissed.
โAnd in Dublin.โ
I narrowed my eyes. โThanks for that.โ
โWell, you were,โ she laughed. โBecause he looooves you.โ
โStop it.โ I blushed bright red.
โAre you sure this is what you want?โ Lizzie asked then, watching me carefully. โYou really want this, Shan?โ
โIโm sure that I want him,โ I admitted with a wistful sigh. โBadly.โ
โAh, god. I justโฆ I canโt. I am so happy right now.โ Wiggling around like a bunny on speed, Claire swept me up in a hug that was so tight, my lungs burned in protest.
โOh god,โ Lizzie groaned. โI suppose you could do worse than Johnny.โ She cast a sideways glance towards Claire. โAt least heโs better than the other one.โ
โClaireโฆโ Spluttering, I pushed at her shoulders, flinching when a sharp jolt of pain ricocheted through my ribcage. โLoosenโฆupโฆโ
โOops, sorry!โ Releasing me immediately, she took a step back and grinned sheepishly. โThe feels had me a little carried away there.โ
โThe feels?โ Lizzie arched a brow. โGirl, you are too much sunshine for one person.โ
โAnd you are too much grey cloud,โ Claire quipped. Turning to me, she cooed, โAnd Shan, here, is our pretty, little silver lining.โ
Shaking her head, Lizzie, turned her attention back to me. โOkay, Shan, Iโm only going to say this once, and then you can do whatever you want.โ
Claire rolled her eyes. โHere we go.โ
โTake yourย time,โ Lizzie said, tone serious. โThereโs no rush, okay? If you want to be with him, then thatโs great. If he makes you happy, then fuck it, Iโm all for it, but donโt feel like you have to do anything youโre not ready for. Heโs older than you and has a hell of a lot more experience with the world, so just take it atย yourย own pace, not Johnnyโs, and if he pressures you, even a little bit, then you kick his stupid rugby ass to the curb because โโ
โBecause?โ a familiar voice asked from behind me.
Startled and excited, I spun around and came face to chest with Johnny.
He was, once again, crutch-less, but he was minus his school jumper this time. His red tie was just about hanging in there, tied loosely in a halfhearted knot against his white school shirt โ a shirt that he filled to the point of stretching the material.
A trickle of fear shot up my spine as I took in the sight of his muscular arms โ his muscularย everything.
God, the boy really wasย all there.
โAlright girls,โ Johnny acknowledged gruffly, and then he turned his heated gaze on me. โHi, Shannon.โ
โHi, Johnny,โ I breathed, heart racing wildly. Flustered, I balled my hands into fists at my sides, not confident enough to touch him first.
Donโt retract, Shannon.
Be brave.
Do something!
Smiling brightly, I asked, โHow are you?โ
Ugh, better than nothing.
A small smile ghosted his lips. โIโm good.โ
โIโm good, thanks,โ I blurted out and then immediately cringed when I realized he hadnโt asked. โI mean โโ
โCome here,โ he chuckled, grabbing my hand and pulling me flush to his chest. โI missed you,โ he whispered, before lowering his face to mine.
I felt his hands come around my waist and then his lips were on mine. Holding onto his arms, I leaned up on my tip-toes and kissed him back, feeling at a serious height disadvantage and struggling to reach him.
Smiling against my lips, Johnny stooped down to hook an arm around my back and then I wasโฆoh god, I was being lifted off my feet as he drew himself back up to his full height.
Snaking my arms around his neck, I melted into the kiss, feeling every ounce of tension drain away as my body grew lax and pliant against his.
โI missed you back,โ I breathed against his lips.
He smiled against my lips. โGood to know.โ
It was a soft, tender kiss that was over before it started, but it felt achingly intimate and left my whole body tingling.
โIf you ditch your brother and come home with me instead, we can do that without an audience,โ Johnny told me, tone laced with amusement, as he set me back down on my feet.
โHuh?โ
He inclined his head towards Claire and Lizzie, who were both watching us, openmouthed.
โWell,โ Lizzie said, composing herself first. โYou just went right on in there, didnโt you?โ
โAww,โ Claire gushed, clutching her chest with both hands. โI love them together.โ She feign-swooned before adding, โItโs like a Great Dane and a Chihuahua trying to mate, but they somehow make it work.โ
โJesus,โ Lizzie grumbled, swatting her arm. โYou are so bloody tactless, Claire.โ
โHe picked her up, Liz,โ Claire squealed, as Lizzie dragged her away. โDid you see that?โ
โYeah, I saw it, now letโs go, whore.โ Keeping her hands on Claireโs shoulders, Lizzie pushed her in the direction of the office. โWe need to tell Mr. Twomey that we found her.โ
โBut, Liz, he actually picked her up toย kissย her!โ
โYeah, Claire, I know. I have eyes, too. Stop being such a weirdo.โ
Mortified, I stared after the girls until they had vanished into the lunch hall, and then I groaned loudly before burying my face in Johnnyโs chest. โIโm so embarrassed.โ
โFound you?โ Johnny tipped my chin up and stared down at me in confusion. โDid youย needย to be found?โ
โI, uhโฆkind of skipped class.โ
His brows furrowed. โAll day?โ
โYeah, Iโฆuh, couldnโt face it,โ I admitted quietly, taking a step back to regain my composure.
โDo you think you can face it now?โ
I shrugged. โI sort of have to, donโt I?โ
โHavingย to be ready andย beingย ready are two very different things,โ he offered softly. โHave you been to the office? To talk to Twomey.โ
โNo.โ I exhaled heavily and rubbed my temples. โBut I know that Iโm going to have to do it eventually.โ
โListen, I know you donโt want to, but if you just get it over with, itโll be one less thing to worry about.โ
โI just donโt know what to say if they ask me about it,โ I confessed, feeling unarmed and exposed. โIโm notย usedย to talking about it.โ
โDo you want me to come with you?โ Johnny blew my mind by asking. โWe could go now? Get it over and done with.โ
My eyes widened. โYou would do that?โ
โOf course,โ he replied gruffly.
โWould you be allowed in there with me?โ
โIโd like to see him stop me,โ he shot back, and then with a grin added, โAnd if he asks you about anything you donโt want to talk about, Iโll take a leaf out of my Daโs book and jump in with a โmy client reserves the right to not answer that questionโ.โ
Smiling, I wrapped my hands around my waist and nodded. โOkay, Iโll do it after lunch.โ
โYeah?โ His eyes burned with tenderness. โWell shite, Iโm kind of persuasive when I want to be.โ
You have no idea just how much.
โIs that okay?โ I heard myself ask, unsure. โCan you come with me then? I mean, it wonโt mess with your classes โโ
โIโll be there,โ he cut me off by saying. โDonโt even worry about it.โ
โBut I just โโ
โStopย worrying.โ Taking my hand in his, he entwined our fingers, and tugged me towards the archway. โIโve got your back.โ
Oh god.
My heart.
Inhaling a steadying breath, I steeled my spine and walked into the lunch hall room with Johnny, holding onto his hand for dear life, and praying for a little invisibility, even though I knew it was no use. If I wanted to go undiscovered, I was holding the hand of the wrong boy. I wasnโt letting go of him, though, not for all the tea in China.
Whatever this was, I knew I would hold on with both hands for as long as I could because the prospect of dealing with everything in my life andย notย having him to look forward to was incomprehensible now. It was all so fresh and new and unknown. Usually, I was terrified of the unknown, but with him, I had a burning curiosity. I was excited โ terrified to my core but excited.
Silence greeted us the moment we stepped inside, and what felt like a thousand pairs of curious eyes landed on us, causing my body to seize up with dread.
Meanwhile, Johnny looked completely unfazed. Seriously, he either didnโt see them staring or he didnโt care because his posture remained relaxed, his smile still firmly etched on his face, as he led us over to his table.
โJohnny,โ I strangled out, tightening my hold on his hand. โEveryone is looking at us.โ
โLet them look,โ he replied, giving my fingers a reassuring squeeze. โTheyโll get bored eventually.โ
Will you?
The words were at the tip of my tongue, but I swallowed them down, deciding on battling the social demon for now.
I could worry myself to sleep with the insecure demon tonight.
Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed Bella watching from her perch at the top end of the rugby table, where she was sitting on Cormac Ryanโs lap. The minute our eyes locked, she narrowed hers in a menacing glare and I instantly felt the weight of her fury; it was sharp, potent, and directed entirely towards me.
Dropping my gaze to my shoes, I debated letting go of Johnnyโs hand, but stopped myself.
No,ย I mentally chastised myself,ย youโre not afraid of her.
Who are you fooling?ย another voice taunted.ย Youโreย terrifiedย of her.
โPush up,โ Johnny ordered when we reached the table, distracting me from my frantic thoughts. Feeling flighty, I locked my muscles into place, forcing my feet to stay firmly on the ground and watched as a line of lads, starting with Hughie Biggs, all obligingly scooted up a seat in the row.
โListen up,โ Johnny said then, drawing the attention of his friends. โThis is Shannon โ my girlfriend. Sheโs going to be sitting here from now on, so get used to seeing her around the place.โ He moved to sit down, but quickly stopped himself and straightened back up. โOh, and fuck with her and Iโll bury you all โโ He cast a meaningful look around the table before adding, โAre we clear?โ
Oh my god!
โYeah, lad, no bother.โ
โWe already know, Cap.โ
โHeard it all before, Kav.โ
โGood.โ Surprising me, Johnny took the seat that Hughie and his girlfriend had vacated, and pulled out his usual chair at the end of the row for me. โJust wanted to clear that up.โ He patted the seat beside him then and I practically flopped into it, wanting nothing more than to hide under the table.
If Tommen was a jungle and the students here were animals, then this table was the lionโs den. I was a stray gazelle, surrounded by the most dangerous of apex predators, all watching me with curiosity. Luckily for me, I was a gazelle that the king of this particular jungle, and leader of the pack, had taken a shining to. I wouldnโt be eaten up. Not today, at least.
I hoped.
Johnnyโs arm came around me then, cocooning me in a blanket of comfort that common sense told me was unsafe and temporary. โJust relax, okay?โ he whispered, leaning so close to me that his lips brushed my ear. โYouโre safe with me.โ
Shivering from the contact, I nodded and suppressed the urge to bury myself inside this boy and never come back up for air. Because I was falling too hard, depending too much, and growing entirely too attached to him. Red flags were shooting up all around me, and still, I remained exactly where I was โ exactly where Iย wantedย to be. With him.
Setting my hands on my lap beneath the table, I tucked my chin downwards and cracked my knuckles. To my immense relief, when I looked up again, the only person still staring at me was Gibsie, who was sitting exactly opposite me at the ginormous table, and grinning like the cat that got the cream. โHey, Little Shannon.โ
โHi, Gibsie,โ I squeezed out, forcing myself to keep eye contact. โH-how are you?โ
โAll good in the hood.โ Pulling a lollipop out of his mouth, he twirled it around aimlessly, as his mischievous eyes danced between me and Johnny. โI can see youโre doing good, too.โ
I blushed and Johnny snapped his head towards him. โRein it in, Gibs,โ he instructed in a warning tone. โWhatever youโre thinking about saying? Donโt say it.โ
โI wasnโt going to say anything,โ Gibsie laughed good-naturedly. โI was making friendly conversation with yourย girlfriend.โ
โHmm.โ Johnny arched a brow, eyes locked on Gibsie. โKeep it that way.โ
โHowโs your brother?โ Gibsie asked then, turning his attention back to me. โIs he doing better?โ
โUh, yeah,โ I mumbled, tucking my hair behind my ears. โWell, heโs home and he went back to school today.โย I hope.ย โSo, heโs doing a lot better.โ
Gibsie smiled warmly at me. โGood.โ
Claire and Lizzie arrived at the table then, making me sag in visible relief.
Lizzie stalked right past the boys with her nose cocked in the air, smacking the back of Gibsieโs head as she passed, not stopping until she was halfway up the table and dragging out an empty chair beside her on again/off again boyfriend, Pierce.
โHey โ what was that in aid of?โ Gibsie called after her.
โBecause youโre a dickhead,โ Lizzie shot back.
โAnd youโre a viper,โ Gibsie muttered under his breath, rubbing the back of his head. โJesus.โ
Claire slumped into the chair beside Gibsie then, much to Hughieโs dismay as he glared, red-faced, at the pair of them.
โHey, Claire-bear,โ Gibsie said, smiling again. โHowโs it going?โ
โHey, Gerard,โ she sighed, sounding sad and looking nothing like the bundle of energy sheโd been a few minutes ago. Rolling up her sleeves, she placed her elbows on the table and dropped her head in her hands. โIโm so sad.โ
โWhy?โ Gibsie stiffened. โWhat happened?โ His eyes narrowed. โWas someone at you?โ
โDee happened,โ she grumbled. โAgain.โ
Gibsieโs mouth fell open and Johnny muttered something unintelligible under his breath before shifting closer to me.
โDee?โ I scrunched my browโs together. โThe school secretary?โ
โThatโs the one,โ Claire replied and then huffed out a pained breath. โI swear that woman hates me for no reason, Shan.โ
Gibsie choked on his lollipop and several of the lads sitting around the table snickered. Meanwhile, Johnny stared dutifully out the window, looking anywhere but at Claire, while Hughie glowered darkly at Gibsie.
Leaning over the table, I gently touched her wrist to get her attention. โWhat did she do?โ
โI have a hockey match in Thurles tomorrow,โ she replied, brown eyes full of sadness. โSomehow, my forms have vanished and now Mr. Twomey is saying that I canโt go.โ Pouting, she folded her arms across her chest and added, โDee told him that I never handed them into the office when I was supposed to, which is a complete lie, because I specifically remember handing themย toย herย the Tuesday before we went on Easter break.โ
โWhy would she do that?โ I asked.
โYeah,โ Hughie bit out through clenched teeth. โI wonder why she would do that.โ
โLolly?โ Gibsie offered then, pulling a lollipop stick from his mouth and holding it out to her.
Claire stared at it for a moment before shrugging, swiping it out of his hand, and then popping it into her mouth. โSherbet?โ She arched a brow. โYou hate sherbet.โ
โGot it for you,โ he shot back with a wink. โI know itโs your favorite.โ
โDonโt put that in your mouth,โ Hughie practically spat. โYou donโt know where heโs been, Claire.โ
โHmm.โ Claire shrugged again, like it was a normal thing to be swapping lollipop saliva with him. โItโs good.โ
โJesus Christ,โ Hughie hissed in despair. โI donโt know why I bother.โ
โAnyway, I canโt play tomorrow,โ Claire continued to say around the pop she was sucking on. โWhich is a complete disaster since Jenny Kelleher is out injured and Saoirse Doyle is still in France with her parents. It was a really important game for Tommenโ She sighed heavily, pulled the lolly out of her mouth, and handed it back to Gibsie. โHere โ Iโm done.โ
โYeah, me, too,โ Gibsie muttered as he shoved the lollipop back in his mouth and jerked to his feet. โI have to go do something.โ
โYeah, you do,โ Hughie spat. โSort it.โ
โHuh?โ Frowning, Claire stared after him. โGerard, where are you going? What about your lunch?โ
โI just need to ahโฆโ He let his words trail off as he pointed towards the archway and then proceeded to dart out of the room.
Johnny, who was watching their interaction, shook his head in clear dismay before scrubbing his face with his hand.
โWhatโs going on?โ I whispered, turning my face into his neck. The smell of his cologne wafted into my nose and I shivered. He always smelled so good. โWhereโs he going?โ I asked, pulling back so I could concentrate.
With a heavy sigh, Johnny dropped a hand to my thigh and squeezed. โTrust me, Shan,โ he said in a low tone, leaning close to my ear. โWhen it comes to Gibs, youโre really better off not knowing.โ
That was the second time today that he had spoken those words, and for the second time today, I thought he might be right.
