โOkay, we need to think this through,โ Gibsie announced as he pulled onto the main road near my house. โBring some sort of deflection with us โ a carrot to dangle in case they turn us away.โ
โA carrot?โ I turned my head and glared at him. โThe fuck are you talking about? We donโt need carrots and deflections, Gibs. Weโre going to drive over to her house, park the car, and knock on the bleeding door.โ
Gibsie rolled his eyes. โYou have no tact. Here, pull my phone out โ itโs in my pocket.โ
โI donโt need tact,โ I grumbled, but I did as he asked. He took the phone from my hands and I steered while he dialed. โYouโll get points on your license for this,โ I muttered, grateful to be in control of something for once, even if was only a steering wheel.
Gibsie grinned and pressed the phone to his ear. โOnly if I get caught โ hey, howโs it going, babe? I need you to be outside in five โ yeah, five minutes. Why? Because Iโm picking you up, thatโs why. Yeah, donโt waste time asking questions. Just put your coat on and meet me at the bottom of your driveway. Itโs cold outside so wear the red one.โ He grinned, clearly getting a mouthful down the line before saying, โI know youโre at home because I saw you watching me from my bedroom window earlier โ yeah, I know you stalk me, too. Yeah, you hate me. I know. Iโve heard it all before, babe. I love you, too.โ
โWeโre bringing Claire?โ I asked when he ended the call.
Gibsie nodded. โIt makes more sense than two lads showing up on their own.โ Shrugging, he added, โShannonโs her best friend, lad. She hasnโt been able to make contact with her since Dublin. Girlโs a nervous wreck over it all.โ
I shrugged. โFair enough.โ
Five minutes later, we pulled onto Hughie and Gibsieโs street and were greeted by a scowling Claire, who was standing at the bottom of her driveway, holding a neon pink umbrella to protect herself from the March downpour.
โWhatโs this about, Gerard? Whatโs the big emergency?โ she asked, climbing into the back seat when Gibsie pulled up beside her. โOh, hey Johnny,โ she added, softening her tone a little. โI hope youโre feeling better.โ
โAll good,โ I replied, feeling uncomfortable knowing that she knew.
โKav here, has coerced me into driving over to Shannonโs house,โ Gibsie said. โThought youโd want to come.โ
โI do.โ Leaning forward, Claire poked her head out between our seats. โBut they wonโt let you through the front door. I had Hughie drive me over there on Friday to see her, but her mother told me she was in bed.โ Claire scrunched her nose up as she spoke. โShe wouldnโt even hear me out, guys. She said Shan was too tired for visitors and just dismissed me.โ
Fury raced through me.
No goddamn way was I going to be dismissed by that woman or any member of their family.
โSimmer down, Cap,โ Gibsie instructed calmly. It was only then that I noticed my knuckles had turned white from the force of clenching them. โWeโll see her.โ
โYouโre damn fucking straight we will.โ
โI know she lives in Elk Terrace,โ Gibsie said. โBut thatโs a huge terrace โโ
โ95 โ she lives at 95,โ Claire and I said in unison.
โJinx,โ Claire chuckled.
โYou know, Claire-bear, if you want to un-jinx yourself, you can always touch my wood,โ Gibsie offered.
โNo thanks, I donโt like wood,โ Claire shot back. โOr penises.โ
โI remember,โ Gibsie chuckled. โWait โ is that the plural for penis? Penises?โ
โProbably,โ Claire replied, placing a hand on his shoulder. โI mean, plural for vagina is vaginas, so it sort of has to be, doesnโt it?โ
โI thought the plural for vagina was vaginae,โ he offered, and then after a thoughtful pause, added, โYou know what, I think plural for penis is penii.โ
โOh my god, Gerard, literally nobody says penii or vaginae,โ Claire scoffed. โItโs penises and vaginas.โ
โHmm,โ he mused. โSounds weird, though.โ
โWhen it comes to human genitalia, I think it all sounds a little weird, Gerard.โ
I zoned out of their conversation, too concerned about Shannon to entertain either of them. Instead, I cranked the stereo and drowned my thoughts out with one of Gibsieโs eclectic mix CDs. I kept my eyes trained on the windscreen, not blinking and barely breathing until we ascended the huge hill and pulled onto her street.
โShit,โ Gibsie muttered when we pulled up outside her run-down house in Elkโs Terrace. โBad luck, huh?โ
โYeah, lad,โ I muttered. โYou have no idea.โ
โTurn down the music, Gerard,โ Claire scolded when Gibsie pulled up outside the house.
โWhatโs wrong with my music?โ Gibsie asked, looking comically wounded.
โKnockinโ On Heavenโs Door?โ Glaring, Claire slapped his shoulder. โReally? After what just happened to her?โ Leaning between the seats, she switched off the stereo. โThatโs so insensitive.โ
โButโฆbut sheโs not here?โ Killing the engine, Gibsie turned to look at her. Confusion was etched on his face when he said, โAnd itโs Guns Nโ Roses.โ
โItโs a bad song choice.โ
โHang on, what about this one โโ His words trailed off as he switched the stereo back on and flicked to track 7. The guitar rift of Thin Lizzyโsย Jailbreakย blasted from the speakers. โBetter?โ Gibsie asked, waggling his brows. โMore suited for the occasion, sweet-pea?โ
โMuch,โ Claire replied, tone approving. โGood job, snuffle-bunny.โ
โThanks, babe.โ
โYouโre both bleeding ridiculous.โ Shaking my head, I shoved the car door open and used my crutches to pull myself out. โThis is serious.โ
โI know, lad,โ Gibsie replied, joining me on the footpath. โI know.โ
โSo, whatโs the plan?โ Claire asked, climbing out after us. โDo we justโฆโ She shrugged helplessly. โGo in there?โ
โWell, Iโm going in there,โ I told her. Not waiting for either of them to respond, I rounded the wall that separated the overgrown garden from the footpath and hopped awkwardly to the door. Tension was emanating from my body in waves as I slipped my hand out of one of my crutches and rapped my knuckles against the door.
โKeep the head, Cap,โ Gibsie instructed quietly in my ear. Reaching around him, he caught ahold of Claire and shoved her in front of both of us. โSmile, Claire-Bear,โ he coaxed, keeping his hand on her hip. โNo one could say no to the sun.โ
Finally, after what felt like an age, the front door swung inwards and we were greeted by what I could only describe as the male version of Shannon. Dark brown hair, piercing midnight-blue eyes full of secrets. โYes?โ he asked politely. โCan I help you?โ
โWho are you?โ I decided to come right out and ask. I already knew this was Darren, but I wanted him to confirm it.
โYouโre at my door,โ the man replied. โWho are you?โ
Fighting down the urge to reach over and drag him out of my way, I asked, โIs Shannon here?โ
Darren leaned against the doorframe and folded his arms across his chest. โWho wants to know?โ
โMe.โ
He arched a brow. โAnd who is me?โ
โIโm her โโ
โHeโs her Johnny,โ Claire blurted out.
โNice,โ Gibsie chuckled, tucking her under his arm. โAnd since weโre making introductions, sheโs my Claire-Bear and Iโm his Flanker.โ
โI remember you,โ Darren said, giving Claire a curious look. โYouโve grown up.โ
โLook, is Shannon here or not?โ I snapped, clinging to my patience by the skin of my teeth. โI need to see her.โ
โNo.โ
Goddammit!ย โWell, can you tell me when sheโll be back?โ I bit out through clenched teeth. โSo I know how long Iโll be waiting in my car.โย Because Iโm not going anywhere, fucker.
โNo.โ
Furious, I leaned on my crutch and hissed, โWhere is she, Darren?โ
He shook his head and reached for the door. โGo home, Johnny.โ
โDonโt do it, Cap,โ Gibsie warned, placing his hand on my shoulder. โDonโt fucking bulldoze.โ
I heard him. I did. But I couldnโt see beyond the red-hazed fog in my mind, smothering me, making it hard to think clearly.
โNope,โ I growled, shaking off his hand. โIโm not going anywhere.โ I shoved a crutch in the doorway to block Darren from slamming the door in my face. โI know all about your family.โ I glared behind him. โAbout the shite that goes on in this house, and if you think Iโm walking away without seeing her, then you have another thing coming!โ
โYou donโt have a clue,โ he growled. โYouย thinkย you do, but you have no goddamn idea!โ
โJohnny, maybe we should just go โโ
โIโm going nowhere!โ I roared, feeling furious and sore from standing. โIโll stand right fucking here until he either lets me in or brings her down!โ Straightening, I looked him dead in the eyes and said, โYou decide. Iโm good with either.โ
โDo you have any idea of what my family is dealing with here?โ he demanded then, his cool faรงade slipping. โWhat weโre all going through right now? Trying to work through?โ He glared at me before continuing, โI am holding my family together by the skin of my teeth here, kid. I spent the best part of a week at my sisterโs hospital bedside, trying to manage the shitstorm that Iโve walked back in to. My family has enough problems right now, issues more complicated than you could ever understand, so I need you to back the fuck up and give us some breathing space.โ
โIโll give you all the space you need,โ I shot back hotly. โAfterย I see Shannon.โ
โThe last thing Shannon needs is you rolling up andย confusingย her,โ he snapped. โSheโs been through hell. She needs rest and peace. Iโm trying to give her that. Iโm trying to make her lifeย better, and you storming in and bombarding her with questions is only going to traumatize her even further.โ
โThen Shannon can tell me that herself,โ I countered, unwilling to give an inch. โTo my face.โ
Darren shook his head. โJesus Christ, Johnny, my mother already explained this to you. I spoke to your father and explained this to him. What arenโt you getting here? Why canโt you understand that whatโs happening in our family is private and we need time to process everything?โ
โWhat are you so afraid of?โ I taunted. โThat sheโll talk to me? Confide in me? Tell me all the shite sheย shouldย be telling the authorities butย isnโtย because youโre keeping her locked up like a fucking prisoner?โ I looked him up and down and sneered, โYeah, I know thereโs more. I know that fucking much. And I also know that you might be able to control her, but you canโt control me, and I have no problem with blowing the roof off your dirty little secrets. And hereโs another thing you canโt do.โ I straightened my spine. โYou canโt make me leave.โ
โYou need to calm down,โ he instructed. โStop puffing your chest out and looking for a fight, Johnny. My sisterโs fine and you need to leave.โ
โShe was neglected and abused in her own home. She was tortured outside of it. Itโs a fucking miracle sheโs still standing. So no, I wonโt fuckingย calm down!โ I snarled. โI want to see her and Iโm not going until I do.โ
โIf you donโt leave, Iโll phone the Gardaรญ,โ he replied. โI donโt want to, but I will if you donโt go.โ
โThen go for it, because Iโm not going anywhere, asshole!โ I roared, losing all touch with my self-control. โGo right ahead and call the fucking Gards, because quite frankly, Iโd love to speak to them.โ
โOh Jesus, his motherโs going to kill me,โ Gibsie groaned. โItโs bad enough that I took him out behind her back, but now heโs going to be arrested, and then Iโll be arrested because Iโm a good friend and itโs just bad form to let him go to prison on his own, but she wonโt see it that way. No, sheโll see her baby in a cell and Iโll be the dead, ball-less eejit beside him. Ugh!โ
โShut up, Gibs!โ I barked.
โStop the world,โ Gibsie groaned. โI want to get off.โ
โGerard, calm down. Nobody is going to prison. Johnny โโ Claire placed a hand on my arm, โCome on. Letโs just go.โ
โIโm going nowhere,โ I hissed for the fiftieth fucking time, keeping my eyes locked on Darren. โNot until I see her.โ
โSee?โ Gibsie croaked out. โYou heard him. Heโs going nowhere, and Iโm going to heaven.โ
โWhat are you hiding?โ I asked, narrowing my eyes.
โNothing.โ
โThen why canโt she see me?โ I demanded. โWhy canโt I see her? What is your fucking problem with me โโ
My words broke off when a small figure darted out from under Darrenโs arm and sprang towards me. My brain barely had the chance to process that the figure I was seeing was Shannon before she lunged at me, wrapping her arms around my neck and causing me to stagger back a step.
โHi, Johnny,โ she whispered, tumbling off the door step as she clung to me. โYou came back.โ
โHi, Shannon.โ My crutches fell to the ground as I wrapped my arms around her body, holding her in place. โI promised I would,โ I replied, keeping my eyes narrowed and locked on her brother.
