Chapter no 24 – EMMA

Just for the Summer

The interrogation started the second we got in the car. โ€œOh my God, that guyโ€™s fucking in love with you,โ€ Maddy said, turning on the engine. โ€œItโ€™s cute. Honestly, Iโ€™m not usually about all that puppy dog stuff, but I liked it.โ€

โ€œHe is not in love with me,โ€ I said, putting on my seat belt. โ€œYeah, he is. And you liiiiike him.โ€

โ€œI do like him,โ€ I admitted. โ€œMore than I thought I was going to.โ€

She gave me her yay face. โ€œOkay. Awesome. Whenโ€™s the wedding?โ€ โ€œMaddy!โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œI canโ€™t date him.โ€

Sheโ€™d started pulling out of the parking space, but now she hit the brakes and threw the car in park. She pivoted in her seat to look at me straight on. โ€œWhy donโ€™t you want to date him?โ€

โ€œHe has kids?โ€ I said. โ€œTheyโ€™re hisย siblings.โ€

โ€œI know. But heโ€™s going to be raising them for the next six years.โ€

โ€œSo youโ€™d give up someone perfect because his life took a shit turn and he ended up having to raise some kids.โ€

โ€œUh, I think youโ€™re simplifying it a bit.โ€

โ€œYou are unreal.โ€ She shook her head at me. โ€œYouโ€™re justย lookingย for a reason,ย anyย reason, to disqualify him.โ€

I scoffed. โ€œSo him having three kids isnโ€™t a big enough reason? If I saw that on a dating profile, I would have swiped left. Iโ€™ve never dated men with kids, ever. Thatโ€™s a conscious choice I make.โ€

โ€œYou donโ€™t want anything that canโ€™t fit in your luggage.โ€ She stared at

me like sheโ€™d just had an epiphany. โ€œThe lengths you will go to stay living in the chaos youโ€™re accustomed toโ€”โ€

I rolled my eyes. โ€œWhatย chaos?โ€

โ€œThe chaos you grew up in! Thisย whole lifeย youโ€™ve madeโ€”the travel nursing and the constant movingโ€”youโ€™re reliving your childhood,โ€ she said. โ€œDoing it in a safe way you can control. You slap the word โ€˜adventureโ€™ on it like lipstick on a pig, but it is what it is, just another way to keep you from ever belonging to anywhere or anyone.โ€

โ€œReally?โ€ I looked at her, amused. โ€œFirst of all, there is nothing wrong with me liking to travel. Itโ€™s maybe theย oneย thing my childhood set me up for that Iย donโ€™tย hate. And thereโ€™s also nothing wrong with me making practical life choices. Iโ€™ve known Justin for like five minutes. So I what? Give up my career and jazz hands my way into his fragile, grieving family hoping it works out between us? Me and this guy Iย justย met? And if it doesnโ€™t work out? How will that affect these kids, who just lost their mom on the tail end of losing their dad?โ€

โ€œKeep it separate. Donโ€™t go over there. Donโ€™t mix your life with theirs until youโ€™re sure.โ€

I laughed. โ€œHe is a full-time parent now. A full-timeย singleย parent. Heโ€™s not going to get weekends when the kids are off with their mom and we can go do things. If Iโ€™m not willing to be around the kids, Iโ€™ll never see him. What would even be the point of staying here? For the once or twice a month when he can get away? Anyone dating him is going to be doing soccer games and pizza nights in the breakfast nook while they help Sarah with homework. I mean, look at today. And honestly, he shouldnโ€™t even be dating anyone right now, he should be getting adjusted.โ€

She jabbed a finger at me. โ€œNotย your decision to make.โ€ She looked me in the eye. โ€œThat is aย goodย man. You are going to fuck up if you let that go.โ€ โ€œWhat exactly has Justin done to warrant this unwavering support from

you? I thought you wanted him dead.โ€ โ€œI think he might be The One.โ€

I cracked up.

โ€œIโ€™m serious,โ€ she said. โ€œYouโ€™re in denial. Youโ€™re blushing and acting like a lovesick teenager. Iโ€™ve known you half your life. I have never seen you look at someone like that.โ€ She started ticking off on her fingers. โ€œFirst he gets you to come to Minnesota, then you go over there when youโ€™re

small and you meet hisย family. At this point Iโ€™m convinced the man could sell you an MLM.โ€

โ€œI had very rational reasons to do all of those things,โ€ I said.

โ€œHeโ€™s chivalrous,โ€ she said, going on. โ€œHe stayed with you during the Amber/Neil Lobster Lovefest. He gives youย butterflies. Heโ€™s awakened something inside of your cold, dead heart.โ€

โ€œOh wow, thanks.โ€

โ€œYou need to jump on this before itโ€™s too late.โ€

โ€œToo late forย what? Whatโ€™s going to happen? If I donโ€™t find someone to love me I shall remain forever a beast?โ€ I made a fake scared face.

She narrowed her eyes at me.

โ€œDo I like him? Yes. Am I attracted to him? Also yes. Did he sort of ask me today to stay in Minnesota longer? He did. But his lifestyle is not for me. Itโ€™s not a fit. I can acknowledge that I like him while also being practical enough to know it wonโ€™t work out. Thatโ€™s what dating is for, to see if youโ€™re compatible. Weโ€™re not.โ€

She cocked her head. โ€œHe asked you to stay?โ€ โ€œHe asked me to sign another contract. Yes.โ€ โ€œAnd you said?โ€

โ€œThe truth. That itโ€™s your turn to pick and I had to promise you two turns just to get you to come here.โ€

Her eyes went wide. โ€œOhย hellย no. Youโ€™re not putting this shit on me.โ€ โ€œDid Iย lie? It is your turn.โ€

She put a hand to her chest. โ€œLetโ€™s be very clear here.ย Iย am not the obstacle in the way of your happiness. That person is you.โ€

โ€œOkay, Maddy. Noted.โ€

She studied me for a moment. Then she looked forward and put the car in drive. She drove out of the mallโ€™s parking garage and started to navigate the streets without another word.

โ€œAre you mad?โ€ I asked. โ€œNo.โ€

โ€œYou look mad.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not. It justโ€ฆ sucks. Heโ€™s a nice guy.โ€ โ€œYeah,โ€ I said. โ€œHe is. But it is what it is.โ€

And you know what? It really did suck. Because she was right. I did like him.

Maybe Justin was the right guy, at the wrong time. Maybe if Iโ€™d met him a few years ago, or six years from now, when his mom was coming home, it would be a different story. But it wasnโ€™t.

In a few weeks Iย wasย going to leave. It was what weโ€™d agreed upon.

Four dates, one kiss, and a breakup. Just for the summer.

We drove on in silence, and I peered out the window. Then we passed the freeway on-ramp and kept driving the side streets.

I turned to Maddy. โ€œWhere are we going?โ€ โ€œGreat Wolf Lodge. I forgot my purse.โ€

โ€œWhere?โ€

โ€œIn Justinโ€™s stroller. In the bag with the shirt he bought.โ€

I pulled my face back. โ€œWhy did you put it in his shirt bag?โ€ My phone started to ring. It was Justin.

I hit the answer button. โ€œHey,โ€ I said, eyeing my best friend. โ€œHey,โ€ he said. โ€œI think Maddy left her purse in my bag.โ€

โ€œI know, weโ€™re heading to the Great Wolf Lodge now.โ€ โ€œCool, Iโ€™ll bring it down. Where should I meet you?โ€

I looked up through the windshield at the parking lot we were driving into. โ€œThereโ€™s a waterslide that comes out of the side of the building. I think itโ€™s the east parking lot? Weโ€™re pulling in there.โ€

โ€œOkay. Iโ€™ll be down in a bit.โ€ We hung up.

I sat back in my seat and looked at my best friend. โ€œWhy do I feel like you did that on purpose?โ€

She shrugged unapologetically. โ€œHe couldnโ€™t kiss you goodbye in front of the kids. Figured if we timed it right, he could get them back to the hotel room, then run down by himself. I drove around aimlessly for a few minutes to give him time to get them situated.โ€

I shook my head at her. โ€œYou are unbelievable.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ she said, pulling a mint out of the change tray and handing it to me. โ€œYou have to manifest your own destiny.โ€

โ€œHeโ€™s just going to run it to the car,โ€ I said, unwrapping it. โ€œNo, heโ€™s not, โ€™cause youโ€™re not gonna be in this car. Get out.โ€ โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œGet OUT.โ€

She leaned over and unbuckled me. โ€œGet the fuck out. I mean it.โ€ I put the mint in my mouth and looked at her, amused.

โ€œEmma, go meet him at the door, or I will lose my shit. I didnโ€™t push a clunky car stroller around the universeโ€™s largest mall for five hours so you could shake hands with this guy on the way out. As soon as he shows up, Iโ€™m going to park around the front at the lobby to give you some privacy. Go get your damn forehead kiss.โ€

I was laughing now. โ€œFine. Iโ€™m going.โ€ โ€œGood. Leave.โ€

โ€œI am.โ€ I opened the car door. โ€œYou are the worst.โ€ โ€œDonโ€™t care. Bye.โ€

I shook my head and closed the car door.

The parking lot was empty. It looked like the direct entrance to the water park, which probably closed the same time the mall did. Several large green waterslides snaked out of the building and looped back in. All you could hear was the whir of something electrical and the splattering of dripping water from the slides on the pavement below.

I got to the entrance just as Justin got to the door. Heโ€™d changed into a pair of running pants and a hoodie. His hair was wet like heโ€™d taken a shower. Probably getting ready for bed. I noted how snuggly he looked and had to force myself to not think about the docking station.

โ€œHey,โ€ he said, coming out. โ€œJust admit youโ€™re obsessed with me, you donโ€™t have to plant things in my stuff for excuses to come see me.โ€

I laughed and took the purse he held out.

Justin looked over my shoulder. โ€œWhereโ€™s she going?โ€

I turned around to see Maddy in the car, vanishing around the front of the building. I rolled my eyes. โ€œI think weโ€™ve been set up,โ€ I said.

I started to turn back to him, but before I knew what was happening, his hands were on my waist, and I was being pulled against him. I blinked up at him, surprised. His eyes dropped to my mouth, he tipped his head down andย kissedย me. A warm, long soft press of his lips to mine.

Iย melted. My legs lost their bones.

Once when I was twenty I spilled some hot oil on my foot while I was cooking. The searing white pain was so intense it was like everything else vanished. I couldnโ€™t see, I couldnโ€™t hear. I could only feel.

This was the polar opposite of the same thing.

Every single molecule of my body was in the place where his mouth touched mine. I hadnโ€™t even seen it coming and then suddenly it was

everything and all there was. The headlights of a truck, so close and fast itโ€™s all you can see before it hits you.

I threw my arms around his neck, purse still in hand, half to keep me from buckling and half to get closer. His embrace tightened and he blew a soft breath through his nose and the warm air rolled across my face and all I could think about was some foggy memory of just a few minutes ago of Maddy saying that I was in denial, and me being in denial about it.

Then he pulled away. Justโ€ฆ stopped.

โ€œWhat happened?โ€ I panted. โ€œWhyโ€™d you stop?โ€ โ€œThatโ€™s all you get,โ€ he said, his voice low.

I blinked at him. โ€œWhat?ย Why?โ€

โ€œBecause I said so,โ€ he said, looking at my lips. โ€œAnd no means no.โ€

Then he unwrapped my arms from his neck, held my cheeks in his hands, gave me another forehead kiss, andย left.

I stood there, holding Maddyโ€™s purse, staring after him. โ€œJustin!โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll see you next week. Call Maddy to come pick you up.โ€

I gawked. โ€œJust so you know, that kiss doesnโ€™t count!โ€ I yelled. โ€œIt has to be open-mouthed.โ€

โ€œOh, I know.โ€ He grinned at me over his shoulder while he scanned his wristband to let himself back into the building.

I crossed my arms. โ€œWhat exactly is your strategy here? To make me beg?โ€

He stopped in the open door. โ€œWould you? Beg? It might help.โ€ I gasped. โ€œIย hateย you.โ€

He started laughing. โ€œI donโ€™t think so. Good night, Emma.โ€ And then he left me in the side parking lot at Great Wolf Lodge.
