Maddy and I docked at the mansion for my second date with Justin. It was almost a week since Iโd gone to his house for spaghetti. Iโd been working nonstop. Maddy was going grocery shopping so she tied the boat up and walked with me across the lawn.
Mom was in a unicorn floatie in the pool.
She wore her wide-brimmed hat and giant sunglasses, drinking something with an umbrella in it.
โHey!โ She waved. โOn the way to the hospital?โ โNo,โ Maddy called. โDay off.โ
โOkay. Well, make good choices girls!โ Mom called. โWill do!โ Maddy shouted.
When we got to the side of the garage, Maddyโs smile dropped off. โSee?โ she said. โI told you I would be nice.โ
โThank you,โ I said. โI appreciate it.โ
Weโd had a long talk the night I got back from Justinโs. She apologized and promised to give Mom the benefit of the doubt. Then sheโd grilled me on Justin for the next hour until I forced her out of my room so I could go to bed.
She was obsessed with the idea ofย meย being obsessed with someone. I wasnโt, but she would will it into existence if she could.
Iย didย like him though. Iโd been thinking a lot about the docking station.
Then Iโd been thinking aboutย whyย I was thinking about it.
Maybe it was because I didnโt usually cuddle with anyone? I couldnโt actually remember the last time I did. It was really addictiveโand I had a feeling I wouldnโt like it with any man but him.
I definitely wasnโt telling Maddy that. โWhat time is he coming?โ Maddy asked. โAnother five minutes.โ
โWant to wait on the porch?โ โSure.โ
We plopped into the chairs outside the front door. โSo whereโs he taking you?โ Maddy asked. โStillwater. Want to see the invitation he sent?โ โUh,ย yeah.โ
I pulled it up and handed her my phone.
The invite was placed over an old black-and-white photo of loggers standing on a pile of timber.
Justin cordially invites you to dinner, wine tasting and antique shopping in Stillwater, the birthplace of Minnesota, at 5:00, August 8th.
Please wear walking shoes.
She handed me the phone back. โI swear to God this guy is the epitome of If He Wanted To He Would.โ
โHe definitely makes curse breaking fun,โ I agreed. She looked over at me. โSo whatโs up with Amber?โ I shrugged. โNothing.โ
โYou guys making any plans to hang out?โ
โI donโt know. She doesnโt really answer my texts.โ Her expression changed.
โWhat?โ I said.
โNothing. Thatโs just what my face does when I leave it unattended.โ
I gave her a look. โSheโs busy. Sheโs having a good time with Neil. Iโm happy for her.โ
โShe didnโt look busy a minute agoโฆโ she mumbled. I didnโt get to reply. Justin pulled up.
We watched him get out and go around the back of the car. He got a
large potted plant from the trunk and started lugging it to the porch. โIs that a rosebush?โ Maddy asked, squinting.
He came up the walk and greeted Maddy, then he looked at me. โI brought you flowers,โ he said, around the leaves.
I laughed. โYou brought me an entire rosebush?โ
He set it down. โYou said the ones Amber got you were dead. I wanted to get you some that wouldnโt die.โ
I smiled at it. โAwww. But this needs to be planted.โ
โThen plant it,โ he said, grinning. โWhatโs wrong with putting down roots?โ
โAbsolutely nothing,โ Maddy said from behind me.
He hugged me hello and kissed me on the cheek. My stomach did a flip. โIโll put it in the pontoon,โ he said, letting me go and picking it back up. โThank you.โ I watched him round the corner of the garage.
As soon as he had his back to us, Maddy gave me anย Are You Kidding Meย look. โIf he wanted to he would,โ she said the second he was out of earshot. โAlso, if Amber wanted to, she would too. Iโm just saying.โ
I rolled my eyes.
โWhere you gonna plant that?โ she asked. โI donโt know.โ
Iโd be leaving it behind. So somewhere it could thrive without me.
