Chapter no 18 – EMMA

Just for the Summer

Maddy and I docked at the mansion for my second date with Justin. It was almost a week since Iโ€™d gone to his house for spaghetti. Iโ€™d been working nonstop. Maddy was going grocery shopping so she tied the boat up and walked with me across the lawn.

Mom was in a unicorn floatie in the pool.

She wore her wide-brimmed hat and giant sunglasses, drinking something with an umbrella in it.

โ€œHey!โ€ She waved. โ€œOn the way to the hospital?โ€ โ€œNo,โ€ Maddy called. โ€œDay off.โ€

โ€œOkay. Well, make good choices girls!โ€ Mom called. โ€œWill do!โ€ Maddy shouted.

When we got to the side of the garage, Maddyโ€™s smile dropped off. โ€œSee?โ€ she said. โ€œI told you I would be nice.โ€

โ€œThank you,โ€ I said. โ€œI appreciate it.โ€

Weโ€™d had a long talk the night I got back from Justinโ€™s. She apologized and promised to give Mom the benefit of the doubt. Then sheโ€™d grilled me on Justin for the next hour until I forced her out of my room so I could go to bed.

She was obsessed with the idea ofย meย being obsessed with someone. I wasnโ€™t, but she would will it into existence if she could.

Iย didย like him though. Iโ€™d been thinking a lot about the docking station.

Then Iโ€™d been thinking aboutย whyย I was thinking about it.

Maybe it was because I didnโ€™t usually cuddle with anyone? I couldnโ€™t actually remember the last time I did. It was really addictiveโ€”and I had a feeling I wouldnโ€™t like it with any man but him.

I definitely wasnโ€™t telling Maddy that. โ€œWhat time is he coming?โ€ Maddy asked. โ€œAnother five minutes.โ€

โ€œWant to wait on the porch?โ€ โ€œSure.โ€

We plopped into the chairs outside the front door. โ€œSo whereโ€™s he taking you?โ€ Maddy asked. โ€œStillwater. Want to see the invitation he sent?โ€ โ€œUh,ย yeah.โ€

I pulled it up and handed her my phone.

The invite was placed over an old black-and-white photo of loggers standing on a pile of timber.

Justin cordially invites you to dinner, wine tasting and antique shopping in Stillwater, the birthplace of Minnesota, at 5:00, August 8th.

Please wear walking shoes.

She handed me the phone back. โ€œI swear to God this guy is the epitome of If He Wanted To He Would.โ€

โ€œHe definitely makes curse breaking fun,โ€ I agreed. She looked over at me. โ€œSo whatโ€™s up with Amber?โ€ I shrugged. โ€œNothing.โ€

โ€œYou guys making any plans to hang out?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t know. She doesnโ€™t really answer my texts.โ€ Her expression changed.

โ€œWhat?โ€ I said.

โ€œNothing. Thatโ€™s just what my face does when I leave it unattended.โ€

I gave her a look. โ€œSheโ€™s busy. Sheโ€™s having a good time with Neil. Iโ€™m happy for her.โ€

โ€œShe didnโ€™t look busy a minute agoโ€ฆโ€ she mumbled. I didnโ€™t get to reply. Justin pulled up.

We watched him get out and go around the back of the car. He got a

large potted plant from the trunk and started lugging it to the porch. โ€œIs that a rosebush?โ€ Maddy asked, squinting.

He came up the walk and greeted Maddy, then he looked at me. โ€œI brought you flowers,โ€ he said, around the leaves.

I laughed. โ€œYou brought me an entire rosebush?โ€

He set it down. โ€œYou said the ones Amber got you were dead. I wanted to get you some that wouldnโ€™t die.โ€

I smiled at it. โ€œAwww. But this needs to be planted.โ€

โ€œThen plant it,โ€ he said, grinning. โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong with putting down roots?โ€

โ€œAbsolutely nothing,โ€ Maddy said from behind me.

He hugged me hello and kissed me on the cheek. My stomach did a flip. โ€œIโ€™ll put it in the pontoon,โ€ he said, letting me go and picking it back up. โ€œThank you.โ€ I watched him round the corner of the garage.

As soon as he had his back to us, Maddy gave me anย Are You Kidding Meย look. โ€œIf he wanted to he would,โ€ she said the second he was out of earshot. โ€œAlso, if Amber wanted to, she would too. Iโ€™m just saying.โ€

I rolled my eyes.

โ€œWhere you gonna plant that?โ€ she asked. โ€œI donโ€™t know.โ€

Iโ€™d be leaving it behind. So somewhere it could thrive without me.
