Chapter no 13 – EMMA

Just for the Summer

Iย swear to God, I smell like rust,โ€ Maddy whispered, sniffing her arm.ย โ€œDo I smell like rust? That water at the cottage is so gross.โ€

We were walking through the halls of the surgical floor of Royaume Northwestern behind the charge nurse, Hector, assigned to give us a tour. Weโ€™d done paperwork, gotten our badges, trained on Royaumeโ€™s electronic medical record system. The tour was the last part of the day, then weโ€™d get our schedules and go home. Our first real shift was tomorrow.

โ€œI canโ€™t tell if you smell like rust because I probably smell like it too,โ€ I whispered.

โ€œWe need a third party to confirm. Do you think Justin would have told you if you smelled?โ€

I thought about it, and our new agreement to be brutally honest with each other. โ€œYeah, I actually do.โ€ I sniffed the inside of my shirt. I couldnโ€™t smell it, but maybe I was used to it? โ€œWeโ€™re probably okay. Though Iโ€™m showering in the locker room whenever I can.โ€

โ€œIck. Same. Probably better to wash up in the lake.โ€

Hectorโ€™s shoes squeaked ahead of us. โ€œPyxis is in there, cafeteriaโ€™s on the ground floor. The chief of surgery is Dr. Rasmussen,โ€ he said in a Mexican accent. โ€œStay out of his way, and hope to God he never notices you enough to make direct eye contact with you.โ€

Maddy gave me a face that meant to remind me sheโ€™d called this when we signed up for Med Surg.

โ€œHeโ€™s that bad?โ€ I asked.

He scoffed and looked over his shoulder at me. โ€œThereโ€™s a reason we need travel nurses in this department, people quit left and right. He is

craaaaanky. Super smart but he doesย notย like anyone who doesnโ€™t do their job, so donโ€™t be messing anything up. Heโ€™s in a good mood today though. Maybe he won his game of golf yesterday.โ€ He laughed at his own joke.

Maddy gave me a look.

โ€œWhatโ€™s your favorite thing from the cafeteria?โ€ I asked, changing the subject.

โ€œThe chicken and wild rice soup,โ€ he said. He glanced at us. โ€œWhere are you guys originally from anyway?โ€

โ€œCalifornia,โ€ Maddy said. โ€œGlendale,โ€ I clarified.

โ€œHmmm. Nice. Warm. Not like here. A couple of months from now, that lake youโ€™re stayinโ€™ at will be so frozen you can walk across it.โ€ He stopped talking and came to attention. โ€œThere he is,โ€ he said, lowering his voice.

I peered past him at the doctor in the blue scrubs coming toward us. I sucked in a shock of air.

Maddy froze. โ€œWhat in the seventh circle of hell isย this?โ€ she breathed.

Neilย was making his way down the hall.

He saw us and his serious face broke into a grin. โ€œEmma, Maddy, nice to see you again!โ€

We were both rendered mute. Even Hectorโ€™s jaw was open.

โ€œHow are you enjoying your first day at Royaume?โ€ he asked, stopping in front of us.

I swallowed. โ€œItโ€™sโ€ฆ itโ€™s great?โ€

โ€œGood, good. Happy to see you ended up in my department. I wasnโ€™t sure where theyโ€™d put you.โ€

โ€œDidโ€ฆ did you know we were working here?โ€ I asked, confused. I hadnโ€™t mentioned I was a nurse. Maybe Mom did? But she didnโ€™t know I was coming to Royaume either.

โ€œOf course. I gave the agency the info for the cottage. Figured travel nurses would make good renters. If thereโ€™s anything the cottage needs, you two just let me know. I havenโ€™t been out there in yearsโ€”howโ€™s the landscaping?โ€

I licked my lips. โ€œUmโ€ฆ fine?โ€

โ€œJust fine?โ€ He crossed his arms. โ€œWhat does the place need, tell me, donโ€™t be shy.โ€

โ€œUhโ€ฆ some hostas might look nice?โ€ I said cautiously. โ€œMaybe around

the sides of the house where itโ€™s shady? You could put rock cress along the slopes by the stairs where thereโ€™s full sun? Pretty ground coverage, deer resistant.โ€

He looked pleasantly surprised. โ€œYou garden.โ€

I nodded. โ€œYeah. My mom taught me, actually. Sheโ€™s got a green thumb.โ€

He shook his head with a grin. โ€œJust when I thought that woman couldnโ€™t impress me more. Any interest in doing it for me?โ€

โ€œSure?โ€

โ€œWonderful. Just get me receipts and Iโ€™ll take the cost off the rent.โ€ โ€œOkay.โ€

He grinned back and forth between us. โ€œMaybe we can get together for dinner later this week, once youโ€™ve gotten settled in,โ€ he said. โ€œAmber and I would love to have you.โ€

Amber and I. Like they were an item. I glanced at Maddy. โ€œWe canโ€™t wait.โ€

He looked at his watch. โ€œPerfect. Well, Iโ€™m off. See you at the house.โ€ He moved past us and was gone.

Maddy and I turned to each other, wide-eyed, and Hector crossed his arms. โ€œSomething you ladies want to tell me?โ€

Maddy spoke first. โ€œWeโ€™re renting his lake house and he knows her mom.โ€

He looked us up and down with pursed lips. โ€œUh-huh. Well, he must like her. Iโ€™ve never seen him that nice to anyone. Go check in at the nursesโ€™ station for your assignments and you can go.โ€ Then he left too.

As soon as he was out of earshot, Maddy whirled on me. โ€œIs this a joke? Please tell me this is some prank show. The mood of our boss is dependent on his relationship withย Amber?โ€

I licked my lips. โ€œYou heard Hectorโ€”heโ€™s never been this nice.โ€

โ€œUh yeah, because Amber hasnโ€™t unleashed the kraken yet. Do you know how fucked we are?โ€

โ€œSheโ€™s doing really well,โ€ I said defensively.

โ€œYeah? And you think sheโ€™s going to do well for the whole time we have to work with that guy? Sheโ€™s gonna burn his fucking house down and weโ€™re gonna be left there with the garden hose. This is my nightmare,โ€ she whispered. โ€œMed Surg, Amber, andย this?โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll talk to her,โ€ I said. โ€œWhen we get back.โ€

โ€œGood. Make her leave. Heโ€™ll be upset for a bit, but itโ€™s better than the alternative. Just tear off the Band-Aid.โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€

But I knew Maddy was right. We were fucked.
