Iย swear to God, I smell like rust,โ Maddy whispered, sniffing her arm.ย โDo I smell like rust? That water at the cottage is so gross.โ
We were walking through the halls of the surgical floor of Royaume Northwestern behind the charge nurse, Hector, assigned to give us a tour. Weโd done paperwork, gotten our badges, trained on Royaumeโs electronic medical record system. The tour was the last part of the day, then weโd get our schedules and go home. Our first real shift was tomorrow.
โI canโt tell if you smell like rust because I probably smell like it too,โ I whispered.
โWe need a third party to confirm. Do you think Justin would have told you if you smelled?โ
I thought about it, and our new agreement to be brutally honest with each other. โYeah, I actually do.โ I sniffed the inside of my shirt. I couldnโt smell it, but maybe I was used to it? โWeโre probably okay. Though Iโm showering in the locker room whenever I can.โ
โIck. Same. Probably better to wash up in the lake.โ
Hectorโs shoes squeaked ahead of us. โPyxis is in there, cafeteriaโs on the ground floor. The chief of surgery is Dr. Rasmussen,โ he said in a Mexican accent. โStay out of his way, and hope to God he never notices you enough to make direct eye contact with you.โ
Maddy gave me a face that meant to remind me sheโd called this when we signed up for Med Surg.
โHeโs that bad?โ I asked.
He scoffed and looked over his shoulder at me. โThereโs a reason we need travel nurses in this department, people quit left and right. He is
craaaaanky. Super smart but he doesย notย like anyone who doesnโt do their job, so donโt be messing anything up. Heโs in a good mood today though. Maybe he won his game of golf yesterday.โ He laughed at his own joke.
Maddy gave me a look.
โWhatโs your favorite thing from the cafeteria?โ I asked, changing the subject.
โThe chicken and wild rice soup,โ he said. He glanced at us. โWhere are you guys originally from anyway?โ
โCalifornia,โ Maddy said. โGlendale,โ I clarified.
โHmmm. Nice. Warm. Not like here. A couple of months from now, that lake youโre stayinโ at will be so frozen you can walk across it.โ He stopped talking and came to attention. โThere he is,โ he said, lowering his voice.
I peered past him at the doctor in the blue scrubs coming toward us. I sucked in a shock of air.
Maddy froze. โWhat in the seventh circle of hell isย this?โ she breathed.
Neilย was making his way down the hall.
He saw us and his serious face broke into a grin. โEmma, Maddy, nice to see you again!โ
We were both rendered mute. Even Hectorโs jaw was open.
โHow are you enjoying your first day at Royaume?โ he asked, stopping in front of us.
I swallowed. โItโsโฆ itโs great?โ
โGood, good. Happy to see you ended up in my department. I wasnโt sure where theyโd put you.โ
โDidโฆ did you know we were working here?โ I asked, confused. I hadnโt mentioned I was a nurse. Maybe Mom did? But she didnโt know I was coming to Royaume either.
โOf course. I gave the agency the info for the cottage. Figured travel nurses would make good renters. If thereโs anything the cottage needs, you two just let me know. I havenโt been out there in yearsโhowโs the landscaping?โ
I licked my lips. โUmโฆ fine?โ
โJust fine?โ He crossed his arms. โWhat does the place need, tell me, donโt be shy.โ
โUhโฆ some hostas might look nice?โ I said cautiously. โMaybe around
the sides of the house where itโs shady? You could put rock cress along the slopes by the stairs where thereโs full sun? Pretty ground coverage, deer resistant.โ
He looked pleasantly surprised. โYou garden.โ
I nodded. โYeah. My mom taught me, actually. Sheโs got a green thumb.โ
He shook his head with a grin. โJust when I thought that woman couldnโt impress me more. Any interest in doing it for me?โ
โSure?โ
โWonderful. Just get me receipts and Iโll take the cost off the rent.โ โOkay.โ
He grinned back and forth between us. โMaybe we can get together for dinner later this week, once youโve gotten settled in,โ he said. โAmber and I would love to have you.โ
Amber and I. Like they were an item. I glanced at Maddy. โWe canโt wait.โ
He looked at his watch. โPerfect. Well, Iโm off. See you at the house.โ He moved past us and was gone.
Maddy and I turned to each other, wide-eyed, and Hector crossed his arms. โSomething you ladies want to tell me?โ
Maddy spoke first. โWeโre renting his lake house and he knows her mom.โ
He looked us up and down with pursed lips. โUh-huh. Well, he must like her. Iโve never seen him that nice to anyone. Go check in at the nursesโ station for your assignments and you can go.โ Then he left too.
As soon as he was out of earshot, Maddy whirled on me. โIs this a joke? Please tell me this is some prank show. The mood of our boss is dependent on his relationship withย Amber?โ
I licked my lips. โYou heard Hectorโheโs never been this nice.โ
โUh yeah, because Amber hasnโt unleashed the kraken yet. Do you know how fucked we are?โ
โSheโs doing really well,โ I said defensively.
โYeah? And you think sheโs going to do well for the whole time we have to work with that guy? Sheโs gonna burn his fucking house down and weโre gonna be left there with the garden hose. This is my nightmare,โ she whispered. โMed Surg, Amber, andย this?โ
โIโll talk to her,โ I said. โWhen we get back.โ
โGood. Make her leave. Heโll be upset for a bit, but itโs better than the alternative. Just tear off the Band-Aid.โ
โYeah.โ
But I knew Maddy was right. We were fucked.
