Chapter no 65

Iron Flame (The Empyreanย Book 2)

Thud. Thud.ย The sound echoes down the ward chamber.ย โ€œWyvern bodies,โ€ย Andarna tells me, pivoting to peek her head through the

doorway.ย โ€œPlease forgive me.โ€ย Her golden eyes blink.

Forgive her?

โ€œShe made a choice,โ€ I whisper, but the tears falling down my cheeks arenโ€™t quite as resigned, nor are the sobs racking Miraโ€™s body, and the blank stare on Brennanโ€™s face is anything but peaceful as he removes his flight jacket in slow, jerky motions and drapes it over Momโ€™s body.

Iโ€™m not sure how much time passes as weโ€™re ushered down the tunnel and through the narrow passage. The stairs are a blur.

โ€œYou are alive. You will live today. You will wake tomorrow,โ€ย Tairn promises me as I force one foot in front of the other.

โ€œXaden?โ€ย I reach through the bond, but his shields are up.

โ€œHe lives.โ€

Thank you, Dunne.

Thatโ€™s gravity, right? Heโ€™s enough to keep my feet grounded. To keep the sun rising.

โ€œHeโ€™ll put her body in the quadrant,โ€ someone tells Brennan. A dragon must have brought Momโ€™s body out of the ward chamber.

We emerge from the southwest tower to the sounds of victory. Cheers and cries of thanks to the gods. Infantry, healers, riders, and fliers alike clog

the hallway with their hugs, but we make it through.

Mira, Brennan, and I stand in the doorway of the courtyard, watching the celebration break into full force. None of us seem able to move.

A face appears in front of mine. Brown eyes. Brown hair. Dain.

โ€œViolet?โ€ He lifts a blood-soaked arm to reach for me, then thinks twice. โ€œAre youโ€”โ€

โ€œMove!โ€ Rhiannon pushes him out of the way, her grin tired and so very beautiful. โ€œYou got the wards up!โ€ She cups my face with both hands.

โ€œYes.โ€ I manage a nod, my gaze skimming over her face. There are a few tears in the thighs of her leathers that might be stab wounds, but I canโ€™t tell. โ€œAre you hurt?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s nothing,โ€ she assures me. โ€œYou should have seen it! The wyvern started falling from the sky like dead weights, and the venin panicked and ran. Leadership is hunting them down.โ€

โ€œGood. Thatโ€™s good.โ€ I keep nodding. โ€œThe others?โ€

โ€œRidoc is all right. Imogen took a swipe on her side, but sheโ€™s barely complaining. Quinn has a busted cheek, but I think itโ€™s mostly swelling, and I was just headed to check on Sawyer and the fliers. Want toโ€ฆโ€ She studies my expression. โ€œXaden?โ€

โ€œAlive,โ€ I croak. โ€œAccording to Tairn.โ€

She glances at Brennan, then Mira before turning back toward me, understanding dawning as her face falls.

โ€œMy mom,โ€ I try to explain, but my throat closes. โ€œShe. The wardstone didnโ€™t have any power, and my momโ€ฆโ€

โ€œOh, Vi.โ€ Rhi takes the step that separates us and pulls me in a hug.

It doesnโ€™t matter that I shouldnโ€™t, that itโ€™s a shameful display of emotion, or that she wouldnโ€™t want it. I break down and sob against Rhiannonโ€™s shoulder, my breaths coming in heaving gasps. With every tear, I feel my feet gain traction on a spinning world, feel the first waves of shock start to pass.

When I look up, Brennan is sitting on the steps that lead into the administration building, looking ready to pass out as he gives orders, and Mira is nowhere to be seen.

โ€œWhat do you need?โ€ Rhi asks.

I reach out to Xaden, but his shields are still locked up tight, so I drag the backs of my hands across my face and try like hell to pull myself together. โ€œI need to lay eyes on Tairn and Xaden.โ€

โ€œIn the front,โ€ย Tairn tells me, and I head in that direction, passing the negotiations between Melgren and Devera and pausing when I hear him laying out terms for our return. An attack, a horde that big? Bodies dropping all over the kingdom? Thereโ€™s no chance leadership can hide this. Itโ€™s only a matter of hours before every Navarrian citizen knows theyโ€™ve been lied to. No wonder they want us to return.

Iโ€™m not even sure Iย wantย to come back. I make my way through the courtyard and then the archway, into the open air.

Openโ€ฆgraveyard.

Bodies of wyvern litter the ground with a few colors mixed in, but I donโ€™t recognize any of the dragons I pass as I make my way to the looming shapes of Tairn and Sgaeyl near the edge of the ravine.

โ€œAre you harmed?โ€ I ask him.

โ€œYou would know if I were,โ€ย he says, his head swiveling as Andarna approaches, her right wing trembling as she flares them just before landing.

โ€œYou two need to catch up. Right now.โ€ Tairn turns a golden eye on me.

โ€œRight. Now,โ€ I repeat.

His attention fully shifts to Andarna, and I walk toward Sgaeyl, feeling Xaden beyond where she sits guard.

โ€œAre you going to let me pass?โ€ I ask her, keeping my eyes on hers and not the blood beard sheโ€™s sporting.

โ€œYou fought well today.โ€

โ€œThank you.โ€ A reluctant smile tugs at my lips. โ€œYou did, too.โ€

โ€œYes, well,ย Iโ€™mย expected to.โ€ย She shifts her forelegs, revealing Xaden standing at the edge of the ravine, his back turned toward me.ย โ€œBe careful of your words.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s ironic coming from you,โ€ I mutter but move forward, surveying him. Thereโ€™s a laceration across his upper back, but thatโ€™s all I see as I walk

to his side, keeping my toes a few inches from the edge, where his damn near hang over. โ€œWhat happened?โ€

โ€œI killed him.โ€ His voice is flat, and so is his expression, the noon sun cutting away almost every shadow from his face. โ€œSnapped whatever tether he had on me and killed him. His body fell into the ravine, and now I keep watching the river like itโ€™s going to pop back up, even though I know heโ€™s miles downstream by now.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m sorry I wasnโ€™t here.โ€ I reach for his hand, but he tugs it away. โ€œIโ€™m not. You saved us.โ€

โ€œMy mother saved us.โ€ My voice cracks. โ€œShe had Sloane siphon Aimsirโ€™s power and both their life energies into the wardstone. Sheโ€™s gone.โ€

His eyes slide closed. โ€œIโ€™m so fucking sorry.โ€

โ€œShe killed your father. Why would you be sorry?โ€ I swipe at another tear that leaks out.

โ€œI didnโ€™t want her dead,โ€ he says softly. โ€œI could never want anyone you love dead.โ€

Silence falls over us, and itโ€™s not the comfortable kind.

โ€œMelgren wants us to come back,โ€ I throw out there, looking for some reaction,ย anyย reaction.

โ€œThen we come back.โ€ He nods. โ€œAretiaโ€™s wards are already weakening, and these are intact. Which youโ€™ll explain to me later, right?โ€ His gaze flicks sideways at me but quickly leaves, like Iโ€™m painful to look at.

โ€œIโ€™ll explain,โ€ I promise.

โ€œGood.โ€ He nods. โ€œItโ€™s safer for you here. This is where we should be.โ€ He drags in a shaky breath, then laughs. โ€œYou wonโ€™t be as scared under the full wards.โ€

My brow furrows. โ€œI just fought an entire wyvern army, dark wielders, and raised wards, losing my mother in the process. Please, do tell me what could possibly be scarier than that?โ€

โ€œYou love me,โ€ he whispers.

โ€œYou know I do.โ€ I grab hold of his hand, and my stomach twists when he turns toward me but lowers his eyes. โ€œWhatโ€™s out there that I should be

scared of, Xaden? What did he tell you? What did you see?โ€ What could he know that has him this shaken?

Slowly, he drags his gaze up my body, and it feels like it takes years for him to justย lookย at me.

When he finally does, I gasp, my hand tightening on his in reflex.

No.ย That single word is all I can think, feel, scream internally as I stare up at the man Iโ€™m hopelessly in love with.

โ€œMe,โ€ he whispers, a faint, almost indistinguishable red ring emanating from his gold-flecked onyx irises. โ€œYou should be scared ofย me.โ€
