We both stare at the bloody scene a moment longer before Warner suddenly straightens and heads out the door. I tuck my gun into the waistband of my pants and chase after him, remembering to close the door behind us. I donโt want those scorpions getting loose.
โHey,โ I say, catching up to him. โWhere are you going?โ โTo find Castle.โ
โCool. Okay. But do you think that maybe next time, instead of just, you know, leaving without a word, you could tell me what the hell is going on? I donโt like chasing after you like this. Itโs demeaning.โ
โThat sounds like a personal problem.โ
โYeah but I thought personal problems were your area of expertise,โ I say. โYouโve got what, at least a few thousand personal problems, right? Or was it a few million?โ
Warner shoots me a dark look. โYouโd do well to address your own mental turbulence before criticizing mine.โ
โUh, whatโs that supposed to mean?โ
โIt means that a rabid dog could sniff out your desperate, broken state.
Youโre in no position to judge me.โ โExcuse me?โ
โYou lie to yourself, Kishimoto. You hide your true feelings behind a thin veneer, playing the clown, when all the while youโre amassing emotional detritus you refuse to examine. At least I do not hide from myself. I know where my faults lie and I accept them. But you,โ he says. โPerhaps you should seek help.โ
My eyes widen to the point of pain, my head whipping back and forth between him and the path in front of me. โYou have got to be kidding me
right now.ย Youโreย tellingย meย to get help with my issues? What is happening?โ I look up at the sky. โAm I dead? Is this hell?โ
โI want to know whatโs happening with you and Castle.โ Iโm so surprised I briefly stop in place.
โWhat?โ I blink at him. Still confused. โWhat are you talking about?
Thereโs nothing wrong with me and Castle.โ
โYouโve been more profane in the last several weeks than in the entire time Iโve known you. Something is wrong.โ
โIโm stressed,โ I say, feeling myself bristle. โSometimes I swear when Iโm stressed.โ
He shakes his head. โThis is different. Youโre experiencing an unusual amount of stress, even for you.โ
โWow.โ My eyebrows fly up. โI really hope you didnโt bother using yourโโI make air quotesโโsupernatural ability to sense emotionsโโI drop the air quotesโโto figure that one out. Obviously Iโm extra stressed out right now. The world is on fucking fire. The list of things stressing me out is so long I canโt even keep track. Weโre up to our necks in shit. J is gone. Adam defected. Nazeeraโs been shot. Youโve had your head so far up your own ass I thought youโd never emergeโโ
He tries to cut me off but I keep talking.
โโand literally five minutes ago,โ I say, โsomeone from the Sanctuaryโ ha, hilarious, horrible nameโjust tried to kill you, and I killed her for it.ย Five minutes ago.ย So yeah, I think Iโm experiencing an unusual amount of stress right now, genius.โ
Warner dismisses my speech with a single shake of his head. โYour use of profanity increases exponentially when youโre irritated with Castle. Your language appears to be directly connected to your relationship with him. Why?โ
I try not to roll my eyes. โNot that this information is actually relevant, but Castle and I struck a deal a few years ago. He thought that myโโI make more air quotesโ โoverreliance on profanity was inhibiting my ability to express my emotions in a constructive manner.โ
โSo you promised him youโd tone down your language.โ โYeah.โ
โI see. It seems youโve reneged on the terms of that arrangement.โ
โWhy do you care?โ I ask. โWhy are we even talking about this? Why are we losing sight of the fact that we were just attacked by someone from
insideย of the Sanctuary? We need to find Sam and Nouria and find out who this girl was, because she was clearly from this camp, and they should know thโโ
โYou can tell Sam and Nouria whatever you want,โ Warner says. โBut I need to talk to Castle.โ
Something in his tone frightens me. โWhy?โ I demand. โWhat is going on? Why are you so obsessed with Castle right now?โ
Finally, Warner stops moving. โBecause,โ he says. โCastle had something to do with this.โ
โWhat?โ I feel the blood drain from my body. โNo way. Not possible.โ Warner says nothing.
โCome on, man, donโt be crazyโ Castleโs not perfect, but he would neverโโ
โHeyโ What the hell just happened?โ Winston, breathless and panicked, comes running up to us. โI heard a gunshot coming from the direction of your tent, but when I went to check on you, I sawโ I sawโโ
โYeah.โ
โWhat happened?โ Winstonโs voice is shrill. Terrified.
At that exact moment, more people come running. Winston starts offering people explanations I donโt bother to edit, because my head is still full of steam. I have no idea what the hell Warner is getting at, but Iโm also worried that I know him too well to deny his mind. My heart says Castle would never betray us, but my brain says that Warner is usually right when it comes to sussing out this kind of shit. So Iโm freaking out.
I spot Nouria in the distance, her dark skin gleaming in the bright sun, and relief floods through me.
Finally.
Nouria will know more about the girl with the scorpions. She has to. And whatever she knows will almost certainly help absolve Castle of any affiliation with this mess. And as soon as we can resolve this freak accident, Warner and I can get the hell out of here and start searching for J.
Thatโs it. Thatโs the plan.
It makes me feel good to have a plan. But when weโre close enough, Nouria narrows her eyes at both me and Warner, and the look on her face sends a brand-new wave of fear through my body.
โFollow me,โ she says.
We do.
Warner looksย livid.
Castle looks freaked out.
Nouria and Sam look like theyโre sick and tired of all of us.
I might be imagining things, but Iโm pretty sure Sam just shot Nouria a lookโthe subtext of which was probablyย Why the hell did you have to let your dad come stay with us?โthat was so withering Nouria didnโt even get upset, she just shook her head, resigned.
And the problem is, I donโt even know whose side Iโm on.
In the end, Warner was right about Castle, but he was also wrong. Castle wasnโt plotting anything nefarious; he didnโt send that girlโher name was Ameliaโafter Warner. Castleโs mistake was thinking that all rebel groups shared the same worldview.
At first it didnโt occur to me, either, that the vibe might be different around here. Different from our group at Point, at least. At Point we were led by Castle, who was more of a nurturer than a warrior. In his days before The Reestablishment he was a social worker. He saw tons of kids coming in and out of the system, and with Omega Point he sought to build a home and refuge for the marginalized. We were all about love and community at Point. And even though we knew that we were gearing up for a fight against The Reestablishment, we didnโt always resort to violence; Castle didnโt like using his powers in authoritative ways. He was more like a father figure to most of us.
But hereโ
It didnโt take long to realize that Nouria was different from her dad. Sheโs nice enough, but sheโs also all business. She doesnโt like to spend much time on small talk, and she and Sam mostly keep to themselves. They donโt always take their meals with everyone else. They donโt always participate in group things. And when it comes right down to it, Sam and Nouria are ready and willing to set shit on fire. Hell, they seem to be looking forward to it.
Castle was never really that guy.
I think he was a little blindsided when we showed up here. He was suddenly out of a job when he realized that Nouria and Sam werenโt going to take orders from him. And then, when he tried to get to know peopleโ
He was disappointed.
โAmelia was a bit of a zealot,โ Sam says, sighing. โSheโd never exhibited dangerous, violent tendencies, of course, which is why we let her stayโbut we all felt that her views were a little intense. She was one of the rare members who felt like the lines between The Reestablishment and the rebel groups should be clear and finite. She never felt safe with the children of the supreme commanders in our midst, and I know that because she took me aside to tell me so. I had a long talk with her about the situation, but I see now that she wasnโt convinced.โ
โObviously,โ I mutter.
Nouria shoots me a look. I clear my throat.
Sam goes on: โWhen everyone but Warner was basically kidnappedโ and Nazeera was shotโAmelia probably figured she could finish the job and get rid of Warner, too.โ She shakes her head. โWhat a horrible situation.โ
โDid you have to shoot her?โ Nouria says to me. โWas she really that dangerous?โ
โShe hadย threeย scorpions!โ I cry. โShe pulled a gun on Warner!โ
โWhat else was he supposed to think?โ Castle says gently. Heโs staring at the ground, his long dreads freed from their usual tie at the base of his neck. I wish I could see the expression on his face. โIf I hadnโt known Amelia personally, even I wouldโve thought she was working for someone.โ
โTell me, again,โ Warner says to Castle, โexactly what you said to her about me.โ
Castle looks up. Sighs.
โShe and I got into a bit of a heated discussion,โ he says. โAmelia was determined that members of The Reestablishment could never change, that they were evil and would remain evil. I told her I didnโt believe that. I told her that I believed that all people were capable of change.โ
I raise an eyebrow. โWait, like, you mean you think even someone like Anderson is capable of change?โ
Castle hesitates. And I know, just by looking at his eyes, what heโs about to say. My heart jumps in my chest. In fear.
โI think if Anderson were truly remorseful,โ Castle says, โthat he, too, could make a change. Yes. I do believe that.โ
Nouria rolls her eyes.
Sam drops her head in her hands.
โWait. Wait.โ I hold up a finger. โSo, like, in a hypothetical situationโ If Anderson came to Point asking for amnesty, claiming to be a changed man, youโd . . . ?โ
Castle just looks at me.
I throw myself back in my chair with a groan.
โKenji,โ Castle says softly. โYou know better than anyone else how we did things at Omega Point. I dedicated my life to giving secondโand third
โchances to those whoโd been cast out by the world. Youโd be stunned if you knew how many peopleโs lives were derailed by a simple mistake that snowballed, escalating beyond their control because no one was ever there to offer a hand or even an hour of assistanceโโ
โCastle. Sir.โ I hold up my hands. โI love you. I really do. But Anderson isnโt a regular person. Heโโ
โOf course heโs a regular person, son. Thatโs exactly the point. Weโre all just regular people, when you strip us down. Thereโs nothing to be afraid of when you look at Anderson; heโs just as human as you or me. Just as terrified. And Iโm sure if he could go back and do his life over again, heโd make very different decisions.โ
Nouria shakes her head. โYou donโt know that, Dad.โ โMaybe not,โ he says quietly. โBut itโs what I believe.โ
โIs that what you believe about me, too?โ Warner asks. โIs that what you told her? That I was just a nice boy, a defenseless child whoโd never lift a finger to hurt her? That if I could do it all over again Iโd choose to live my life as a monk, dedicating my days to giving charity and spreading goodwill?โ
โNo,โ Castle says sharply. Itโs clear heโs starting to get irritated. โI told her that your anger was a defense mechanism, and that you couldnโt help that you were born to an abusive father. I told her that in your heart, youโre a good person, and that you donโtย wantย to hurt anyone. Not really.โ
Warnerโs eyes flash. โI want to hurt people all the time,โ he says. โSometimes I canโt sleep at night because Iโm thinking about all the people Iโd like to murder.โ
โGreat.โ I nod, leaning back in my chair. โThis is super great. All of this information weโre collecting is super helpful and useful.โ I count off on my fingers: โAmelia was a psycho, Castle wants to be BFFs with Anderson, Warner has midnight fantasies about killing people, and Castle made Amelia think that Warner is a lost little bunny trying to find his way home.โ
When everyone stares at me, confused, I clarify:
โCastle basically gave Amelia the idea that she could walk into a room and murder Warner! He pretty much told her that Warner was about as harmful as a dumpling.โ
โOh,โ Sam and Nouria say at the same time.
โI donโt think she wanted to murder him,โ Castle says quickly. โIโm sure she justโโ
โDad, please.โ Nouriaโs voice is sharp and final. โEnough.โ She shares a glance with Sam, and takes a deep breath.
โListen,โ she says, trying for a calmer tone. โWe knew, when you got here, that weโd have to deal with this situation eventually, but I think itโs time we had a talk about our roles and responsibilities around here.โ
โOh. I see.โ Castle clasps his hands. Stares at the wall. He looks so sad and small and ancient. Even his dreads seem more silver than black these days. Sometimes I forget heโs almost fifty. Most people think heโs, like, fifteen years younger than he actually is, but thatโs just because heโs always looked really, really good for his age. But for the first time in years, I feel like Iโm beginning to see the number on his face. He looks tired. Worn out.
But that doesnโt mean heโs done here.
Castleโs still got so much more to do. So much more to give. And I canโt just sit here and let him be shoved aside. Ignored. I want to shout at someone. I want to tell Nouria and Sam that they canโt just kick Castle to the curb like this. Not after everything. Not like this.
And Iโm about to say something exactly like that, when Nouria speaks. โSam and I,โ she says, โwould like to offer you an official position as our
senior adviser here at the Sanctuary.โ
Castleโs head perks up. โSenior adviser?โ He stares at Nouria. Stares at Sam. โYouโre not asking me to leave?โ
Nouria looks suddenly confused.
โLeave? Dad, you just got here. Sam and I want you to stay for as long as you like. We just think itโs important that we all know what weโre doing here, so that we can manage things in as efficient and organized a manner as possible. Itโs hard for Sam and me to be effective at our jobs if weโre worried about tiptoeing around your feelings, and even though itโs hard to have conversations like this, we figured it would be best to jusโโ
Castle pulls Nouria into a hug so fierce, so full of love, I feel my eyes sting with emotion. I actually have to look away for a moment.
When I turn back, Castle is beaming.
โIโd be honored to advise in any way that I can,โ Castle says. โAnd if I havenโt said it enough, let me say it again: Iโm so proud of you, Nouria. So proud of both of you,โ he says, looking at Sam. โThe boys wouldโve been so proud.โ
Nouriaโs eyes go glassy with emotion. Even Sam seems moved. One more minute of this, and Iโm going to need a tissue.
โRight, well.โ Warner is on his feet. โIโm glad the attempt on my life was able to bring your family together. Iโm leaving now.โ
โWaitโโ I grab Warnerโs arm and he shoves me off.
โIf you keep touching me without my permission, I will remove your hands from your body.โ
I ignore that. โShouldnโt we tell them that weโre leaving?โ Sam frowns. โLeaving?โ
Nouriaโs eyebrows fly up. โWe?โ
โWeโre going to get J,โ I explain. โSheโs back in Oceania. James told us everything. Speaking of whichโ You should probably talk to him. Heโs got some news about Adam you wonโt like, news that I donโt care to repeat.โ
โKent betrayed all of you to save himself.โ
โTo saveย James,โ I clarify, shooting Warner a dirty look. โAnd that was not cool, man. I just said I didnโt want to talk about it.โ
โIโm trying to be efficient.โ
Castle looks stunned. He says nothing. He just looks stunned.
โTalk to James,โ I say. โHeโll tell you whatโs happening. But Warner and I are going to catch a planeโโ
โSteal a plane.โ
โRight, steal a plane, before the end of the day. And, uh, you knowโ weโll just go get J and be back real quick,ย bim bam boom.โ
Nouria and Sam are staring at me like Iโm an idiot. โBim bam boom?โ Warner says.
โYeah, you know, likeโโI clap my hands togetherโโboom. Done.
Easy.โ
Warner turns away from me with a sigh.
โWaitโ So, just the two of you are doing this?โ Sam asks. Sheโs frowning.
โHonestly, the fewer, the better,โ Nouria answers for me. โThat way, there are fewer bodies to hide, fewer actions to coordinate. Regardless, Iโd
offer to come with you, but we have so many still wounded that we need to care forโand now that Amelia is dead, thereโs sure to be more emotional upheaval to manage.โ
Castleโs eyes light up. โWhile theyโre going after Ella,โ he says to Nouria and Sam, โand the two of you are running things here, I was thinking Iโd reach out to the friends in my network. Let them know whatโs happening, and that change is afoot. I can help coordinate our moves around the globe.โ
โThatโs a great idea,โ Sam says. โMaybe we cโโ
โI donโt care,โ Warner says loudly, and turns for the door. โAnd Iโm leaving now. Kishimoto, if youโre coming, keep up.โ
โRight,โ I say, trying to sound important. โYup. Bye.โ I shoot a quick two-finger salute at everyone and run straight for the door only to slam hard into Nazeera.
Nazeera.
Holy shit. Sheโs awake. Sheโs perfect. Sheโsย pissed.
โYou two arenโt going anywhere without me,โ she says.
