Chapter no 14 – โ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€ŒKENJIโ€Œ

Imagine Me (Shatter Me Book 6)

I stop short at the door.

Warner is here.

Warner and James, together.

James was given his own private section of the MTโ€” which is otherwise full and crampedโ€”and the two of them are here, Warner sitting in a chair beside Jamesโ€™s bed, James propped up against a stack of pillows. Iโ€™m so relieved to see him looking okay. His dirty-blond hair is a little too long, but his light, bright blue eyes are open and animated. Still, he looks more than a little tired, which probably explains the IV hooked up to his body.

Under normal circumstances, James should be able to heal himself, but if his body is drained, it makes the job harder. He mustโ€™ve arrived malnourished and dehydrated. The girls are probably doing what they can to help speed up the recovery process. I feel a rush of relief.

James will be better soon. Heโ€™s such a strong kid. After everything heโ€™s been throughโ€”

Heโ€™ll get through this, too. And he wonโ€™t be alone.

I glance again at Warner, who looks only marginally better than the last time I saw him. He really needs to wash that blood off his body. Itโ€™s not like Warner to overlook basic rules of hygieneโ€”which should be proof enough that the guy is close to a full-on breakdownโ€”but for now, at least, he seems okay. He and James appear to be deep in conversation.

I remain at the door, eavesdropping. It only belatedly occurs to me that I should give them privacy, but by then Iโ€™m too invested to walk away. Iโ€™m almost positive Anderson told James the truth about Warner. Or, I donโ€™t know, exactly. I canโ€™t actually imagine a scenario in which Anderson would gleefully reveal to James that Warner is his brother, or that Anderson is his

dad. But somehow I can just tell that James knows.ย Someoneย told him. I can tell by the look on his face.

This is the come-to-Jesus moment.

This is the moment where Warner and James finally come face-to-face not as strangers, but as brothers. Surreal.

But theyโ€™re speaking quietly, and I can only catch bits and pieces of their conversation, so I decide to do something truly reprehensible: I go invisible, and step farther into the room.

The moment I do, Warner stiffens.

Shit.

I see him glance around, his eyes alert. His senses are too sharp. Quietly, I back up a few steps.

โ€œYouโ€™re not answering my question,โ€ James says, poking Warner in the arm. Warner shakes him off, his eyes narrowed at a spot a mere foot from where Iโ€™m standing.

โ€œWarner?โ€

Reluctantly, Warner turns to face the ten-year-old. โ€œYes,โ€ he says, distracted. โ€œI meanโ€” What were you saying?โ€

โ€œWhy didnโ€™t you ever tell me?โ€ James says, sitting up straighter. The bedsheets fall down, puddle in his lap. โ€œWhy didnโ€™t you say anything to me before? That whole time we lived togetherโ€”โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t want to scare you.โ€ โ€œWhy would I be scared?โ€

Warner sighs, stares out the window when he says, quietly, โ€œBecause Iโ€™m not known for my charm.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s not fair,โ€ James says. He looks genuinely upset, but his visible exhaustion is keeping him from reacting too strongly. โ€œIโ€™ve seen a lot worse than you.โ€

โ€œYes. I realize that now.โ€

โ€œAndย no oneย told me. I canโ€™t believe no one told me. Not even Adam. Iโ€™ve been so mad at him.โ€ James hesitates. โ€œDid everyone know? Did Kenji know?โ€

I stiffen.

Warner turns again, this time staring precisely in my direction when he says, โ€œWhy donโ€™t you ask him yourself ?โ€

โ€œSon of a bitch,โ€ I mutter, my invisibility melting away. Warner almost smiles. Jamesโ€™s eyes go wide.

This was not the reunion I was hoping for.

Still, Jamesโ€™s face breaks into the biggest smile, whichโ€” Iโ€™m not going to lieโ€”does wonders for my self-esteem. He throws off the covers and tries to jump out of bed, barefoot and oblivious to the needle stuck in his arm, and in those two and a half seconds I manage to experience both joy and terror.

I shout a warning, rushing forward to stop him from ripping open the flesh of his forearm, but Warner beats me to it. Heโ€™s already on his feet, not so gently pushing the kid back down.

โ€œOh.โ€ James blushes. โ€œSorry.โ€

I tackle him anyway, pulling him in for a long, excessive hug, and the way he clings to me makes me think Iโ€™m the first to do it. I try to fight back a rush of anger, but Iโ€™m unsuccessful. Heโ€™s a ten-year-old kid, for Godโ€™s sake. Heโ€™s been through hell. How has no one given him the physical reassurance he almost certainly needs right now?

When we finally break apart, James has tears in his eyes. He wipes at his face and I turn away, trying to give him privacy, but when I take a seat at the foot of Jamesโ€™s bed I catch a flash of pain steal in and out of Warnerโ€™s eyes. It lasts for only half a second, but itโ€™s enough to make me feel bad for the guy. And itโ€™s enough to make me think he might be human again.

โ€œHey,โ€ I say, speaking to Warner directly for the first time. โ€œSo what, uh

โ€” What are you doing here?โ€

Warner looks at me like Iโ€™m an insect. His signature look. โ€œWhat do you think Iโ€™m doing here?โ€

โ€œReally?โ€ I say, unable to hide my surprise. โ€œThatโ€™s so decent of you. I didnโ€™t think youโ€™d be so . . . emotionally . . . responsible.โ€ I clear my throat. Smile at James. Heโ€™s studying us curiously. โ€œBut Iโ€™m happy to be wrong, bro. And Iโ€™m sorry I misjudged you.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m here to gather information,โ€ Warner says coldly. โ€œJames is one of the only people who might be able to tell us where my father is located.โ€

My compassion quickly turns to dust. Catches fire.

Turns to rage.

โ€œYouโ€™re here to interrogate him?โ€ I say, nearly shouting. โ€œAre you insane? The kid has only barely recovered from unbelievable trauma, and youโ€™re here trying to mine him for information? He was probablyย tortured. Heโ€™s a freakingย child. What the hell is wrong with you?โ€

Warner is unmoved by my theatrics. โ€œHe was not tortured.โ€ That stops me cold.

I turn to James. โ€œYou werenโ€™t?โ€ James shakes his head. โ€œNot exactly.โ€

โ€œHuh.โ€ I frown. โ€œI mean, donโ€™t get me wrongโ€”Iโ€™m thrilledโ€”but if he didnโ€™t torture you, what did Anderson do with you?โ€

James shrugs. โ€œHe mostly left me in solitary confinement. They didnโ€™t beat me,โ€ he says, rubbing absently at his ribs, โ€œbut the guards were pretty rough. And they didnโ€™t feed me much.โ€ He shrugs again. โ€œBut honestly, the worst part was not seeing Adam.โ€

I pull James into my arms again, hold him tight. โ€œIโ€™m so sorry,โ€ I say gently. โ€œThat sounds horrible. And they wouldnโ€™t let you see Adam at all? Not even once?โ€ I pull back. Look him in the eye. โ€œIโ€™m so, so sorry. Iโ€™m sure heโ€™s okay, little man. Weโ€™ll find him. Donโ€™t worry.โ€

Warner makes a sound. A sound that seems almost like a laugh.

I spin around angrily. โ€œWhat the hell is wrong with you?โ€ I say. โ€œThis isnโ€™t funny.โ€

โ€œIsnโ€™t it? I find the situation hilarious.โ€

Iโ€™m about to say something to Warner I really shouldnโ€™t say in front of a ten-year-old, but when I glance back at James, I pull up short. James is rapidly shaking his head at me, his bottom lip trembling. He looks like heโ€™s about to cry again.

I turn back to Warner. โ€œOkay, what is going on?โ€

Warner almost smiles when he says, โ€œThey werenโ€™t kidnapped.โ€ My eyebrows fly up my forehead. โ€œSay what now?โ€

โ€œThey werenโ€™t kidnapped.โ€ โ€œI donโ€™t understand.โ€

โ€œOf course you donโ€™t.โ€

โ€œThis is not the time, bro. Tell me whatโ€™s going on.โ€

โ€œKent tracked down Anderson on his own,โ€ Warner says, his gaze shifting to James. โ€œHe offered his allegiance in exchange for protection.โ€

My entire body goes slack. I nearly fall off the bed.

Warner goes on: โ€œKent wasnโ€™t lying when he said he would try for amnesty. But he left out the part about being a traitor.โ€

โ€œNo. No way. No fucking way.โ€

โ€œThere was never an abduction,โ€ Warner says. โ€œNo kidnapping. Kent bartered himself in exchange for Jamesโ€™s protection.โ€

This time, I actually fall off the bed. โ€œBarter himselfโ€” how?โ€ I manage to drag myself up off the floor, stumbling to my feet. โ€œWhat does Adam even have to barter with? Anderson already knows all our secrets.โ€

Itโ€™s James who says quietly, โ€œHe gave them his power.โ€ I stare at the kid, blinking like an idiot.

โ€œI donโ€™t understand,โ€ I say. โ€œHow can you give someone your power? You canโ€™t just give someone your power. Right? Itโ€™s not like a pair of pants you can just take off and hand over.โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ Warner says. โ€œBut itโ€™s something The Reestablishment knows how to harvest. How else do you think my father took Sonyaโ€™s and Saraโ€™s healing powers?โ€

โ€œAdam told them what he can d-do,โ€ James says, his voice breaking. โ€œHe told them that he can use his power to turn other peopleโ€™s powers off. He thought it m-might be useful to them.โ€

โ€œImagine the possibilities,โ€ Warner says, affecting awe. โ€œImagine how they might weaponize a power like that for global useโ€”how they could make such a thing so powerful they could effectively shut down every single rebel group in the world. Reduce theirย Unnaturalย opposition to zero.โ€

โ€œJesus fucking Christ.โ€

I think Iโ€™m going to pass out. I actually feel faint. Dizzy. Like I canโ€™t breathe. Like this is impossible. โ€œNo way,โ€ Iโ€™m saying. Iโ€™m practically breathing the words. โ€œNo way. Not possible.โ€

โ€œI once said that Kentโ€™s ability was useless,โ€ Warner says quietly. โ€œBut I see now that I was a fool.โ€

โ€œHe didnโ€™t want to do it,โ€ James says. Heโ€™s actively crying now, the silent tears moving down his face. โ€œI swear he only did it to save me. He offered the only thing he hadโ€”the only thing he thought theyโ€™d wantโ€”to keep me safe. I know he didnโ€™t want to do it. He was just desperate. He thought he was doing the right thing. He kept telling me he was going to keep me safe.โ€

โ€œBy running into the arms of the man who abused him his whole life?โ€ Iโ€™m clutching my hair in my hands. โ€œThis doesnโ€™t make any sense. How does thisโ€”ย Howโ€”?ย How?โ€

I look up suddenly, realizing.

โ€œAnd then look what he did,โ€ I say, stunned. โ€œAfter everything, Anderson still used you as bait. He brought you here as leverage. He wouldโ€™veย killedย you, even after everything Adam gave up.โ€

โ€œKent was a desperate idiot,โ€ Warner says. โ€œThat he was ever willing to trust my father with Jamesโ€™s well-being tells you exactly how far gone he was.โ€

โ€œHe was desperate, but heโ€™s not an idiot,โ€ James says angrily, his eyes refilling with tears. โ€œHe loves me and he was just trying to keep me safe. Iโ€™m so worried about him. Iโ€™m so scared something happened to him. And Iโ€™m so scared Anderson did something awful to him.โ€ James swallows, hard. โ€œWhat are we going to do now? How are we going to get Adam and Juliette back?โ€

I squeeze my eyes shut, try to take deep breaths. โ€œListen, donโ€™t stress about this, okay? Weโ€™re going to get them back. And when we do, Iโ€™m going to murder Adam myself.โ€

James gasps.

โ€œIgnore him,โ€ Warner says. โ€œHe doesnโ€™t mean it.โ€ โ€œYes, I damn well do mean it.โ€

Warner pretends not to hear me. โ€œAccording to the information I gathered just moments before you barged in here,โ€ he says calmly, โ€œit sounds like my father was holding court back in Sector 45, just as Sam predicated. But he wonโ€™t be there now, of that Iโ€™m certain.โ€

โ€œHow can you be certain ofย anythingย right now?โ€

โ€œBecause I know my father,โ€ he says. โ€œI know what matters most to him. And I know that when he left here, he was severely, gruesomely injured. Thereโ€™s only one place heโ€™d go in a state like that.โ€

I blink at him. โ€œWhere?โ€

โ€œOceania. Back to Maximillian Sommers, the only person capable of piecing him back together.โ€

That stops me dead. โ€œOceania?ย Please tell me youโ€™re joking. We have to go back to Oceania?โ€ I groan. โ€œDammit. That means we have to steal another plane.โ€

โ€œWe,โ€ he says, irritated, โ€œarenโ€™t doing anything.โ€ โ€œOf course weโ€”โ€

Just then, the girls walk in. They come up short at the sight of me and Warner. Two sets of eyes blink at us.

โ€œWhat are you doing here?โ€ they ask at the same time. Warner is on his feet in an instant. โ€œI was just leaving.โ€ โ€œI think you meanย weย were just leaving,โ€ I say sharply.

Warner ignores me, nods at James, and heads for the door. Iโ€™m following him out of the room before I remember, suddenlyโ€”

โ€œJames,โ€ I say, spinning around. โ€œYouโ€™re going to be okay, you know that, right? Weโ€™re going to find Adam and bring him home and make all of this okay. Your job from here on out is to relax and eat chocolate and sleep. All right? Donโ€™t worry about anything. Do you understand?โ€

James blinks at me. He nods.

โ€œGood.โ€ I step forward to plant a kiss on the top of his head. โ€œGood,โ€ I say again. โ€œYouโ€™re going to be just fine. Everything is going to be fine. Iโ€™m going to make sure everything is fine, okay?โ€

James stares up at me. โ€œOkay,โ€ he says, wiping away the last of his tears. โ€œGood,โ€ I say for the third time, and nod, still staring at his small,

innocent face. โ€œOkay, Iโ€™m going to go make that happen now. Cool?โ€ Finally, James smiles. โ€œCool.โ€

I smile back, giving him everything Iโ€™ve got, and then dart out the door, hoping to catch Warner before he tries to rescue J without me.
