Chapter no 67

Ignite Me (Shatter Me Book 3)

Kenji grabs my arm.

Everyone else is going up and out of Warnerโ€™s room, but Kenji and I will head out the back way, alerting no one to our presence. We want everyone, even the soldiers, to think we are in the midst of battle. We donโ€™t want to show up only to disappear; we donโ€™t want anyone to notice weโ€™re missing.

So we stand back and watch as our friends load into the elevator to go up to the main floor. James is still waving as the doors close and leave him behind.

My heart stops for a second.

Kenji kisses James good-bye. Itโ€™s an obnoxious, noisy kiss, right on top of his head. โ€œWatch my back, okay?โ€ he says to James. โ€œIf anyone comes in here, I want you to kick the shit out of them.โ€

โ€œOkay,โ€ James says. Heโ€™s laughing to pretend heโ€™s not crying.

โ€œIโ€™m serious,โ€ Kenji says. โ€œJust start whaling on them. Like just go batshit.โ€ He makes a weird fighting motion with his hands. โ€œGet super crazy,โ€ he says. โ€œBeat the crazy with crazyโ€”โ€

โ€œNo one is going to come in here, James,โ€ I say, shooting a sharp look at Kenji. โ€œYou wonโ€™t have to worry about defending yourself. Youโ€™re going to be perfectly safe. And then weโ€™ll come back.โ€

โ€œReally?โ€ he asks, turning his eyes on me. โ€œAll of you?โ€ Smart kid.

โ€œYes,โ€ I lie. โ€œAll of us are going to come back.โ€

โ€œOkay,โ€ he whispers. He bites down on his trembling lip. โ€œGood luck.โ€ โ€œNo tears necessary,โ€ Kenji says to him, wrapping him up in a ferocious

hug. โ€œWeโ€™ll be back soon.โ€ James nods.

Kenji breaks away.

And then we head out the door in the gun wall.

The first part, I think, is going to be the hardest. Our trek to the port will be made entirely on foot, because we canโ€™t risk stealing vehicles. Even if Kenji could make the tank invisible, weโ€™d have to abandon it in its visible form, and an extra, unexpected tank stationed at the port would be too much of a giveaway.

Anderson must have his place completely guarded.

Kenji and I donโ€™t speak as we move. When Delalieu told us the supreme would be stationed at the port, Kenji immediately knew where it was. So did Warner and Adam and Castle and just about everyone except for me. โ€œI spent some time on one of those ships,โ€ Kenji said. โ€œJust for a bit. For bad behavior.โ€ He smiled. โ€œI know my way around.โ€

So Iโ€™m holding on to his arm and heโ€™s leading the way.

Thereโ€™s never been a colder day, I think. Never been more ice in the air.

This ship looks like a small city; itโ€™s so enormous I canโ€™t even see the end of it. We scan the perimeter, attempting to gauge exactly how difficult itโ€™ll be to infiltrate the premises.

Extremely difficult. Nearly impossible.

These are Kenjiโ€™s exact words. Sort of.

โ€œShit,โ€ he says. โ€œThis is ridiculous. I have never seen this level of security before. This is backedย up,โ€ he says.

And heโ€™s right. There are soldiers everywhere. On land. At the entrance. On deck. And theyโ€™re all so heavily armed it makes me feel stupid with my two handguns and the simple holster swung around my shoulders.

โ€œSo what do we do?โ€

Heโ€™s quiet a moment. โ€œCan you swim?โ€ โ€œWhat? No.โ€

โ€œShit.โ€

โ€œWe canโ€™t just jump in the ocean, Kenjiโ€”โ€ โ€œWell itโ€™s not like we canย fly.โ€

โ€œMaybe we can fight them?โ€

โ€œAre you out of your goddamn mind? You think we can take on two hundred soldiers? I know I am an extremely attractive man, J, but I am not Bruce Lee.โ€

โ€œWhoโ€™s Bruce Lee?โ€

โ€œWhoโ€™s Bruce Lee?โ€ Kenji asks, horrified. โ€œOh my God. We canโ€™t even be friends anymore.โ€

โ€œWhy? Was he a friend of yours?โ€

โ€œYou know what,โ€ he says, โ€œjust stop. Justโ€”I canโ€™t even talk to you right now.โ€

โ€œThen how are we supposed to get inside?โ€

โ€œShit if I know. How are we supposed to get all those guys off the ship?โ€

โ€œOh,โ€ I gasp. โ€œOh my God. Kenjiโ€”โ€ I grab his invisible arm.

โ€œYeah, thatโ€™s my leg, and youโ€™re cutting it a little too close there, princess.โ€

โ€œKenji, I canย shoveย them off,โ€ I say, ignoring him. โ€œI can just push them into the water. Will that work?โ€

Silence. โ€œWell?โ€ I ask.

โ€œYour hand is still on my leg.โ€

โ€œOh.โ€ I jerk back. โ€œSo? What do you think? Will it work?โ€ โ€œObviously,โ€ Kenji says, exasperated. โ€œDo it now, please. And hurry.โ€ So I do.

I stand back and pull all my energy up and into my arms. Power, harnessed.

Arms, positioned.

Energy, projected.

I move my arm through the air like I might be clearing off a table. And all the soldiers topple into the water.

It looks almost comical from here. Like they were a bunch of toys I was pushing off my desk. And now theyโ€™re bouncing in the water, trying to figure out whatโ€™s just happened.

โ€œLetโ€™s go,โ€ Kenji says suddenly, grabbing my arm. Weโ€™re darting forward and down the hundred-foot pier. โ€œTheyโ€™re not stupid,โ€ he says. โ€œSomeone is going to sound the alarm and theyโ€™re going to seal the doors soon. Weโ€™ve probably got a minute before it all goes on lockdown.โ€

So weโ€™re bolting.

Weโ€™re racing across the pier and clambering up, onto the deck, and Kenji pulls on my arm to tell me where to go. Weโ€™re becoming so much more aware of each otherโ€™s bodies now. I can almost feel his presence beside me, even though I canโ€™t see him.

โ€œDown here,โ€ he shouts, and I look down, spotting what looks like a narrow, circular opening with a ladder affixed to the inside. โ€œIโ€™m going in,โ€ he says. โ€œStart climbing down in five seconds!โ€

I can hear the alarms already going off, sirens wailing in the distance. The ship is steady against the dock, but the water in the distance goes on forever, disappearing into the edge of the earth.

My five seconds are up. Iโ€™m climbing after him.
