Chapter no 65

Ignite Me (Shatter Me Book 3)

โ€œWhat did you say to him?โ€ I ask as soon as the elevator doors close.

Warner takes a deep breath. He says nothing. โ€œYouโ€™re not going to tell me?โ€

โ€œIโ€™d rather not,โ€ he says quietly. I take his hand. Squeeze.

The elevator doors open.

โ€œWill this be weird for you?โ€ Warner asks. He looks surprised by his own question, as though he canโ€™t believe heโ€™s even asking it.

โ€œWill what be weird?โ€

โ€œThat Kent and I are โ€ฆ brothers.โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ I say to him. โ€œIโ€™ve known for a while now. It doesnโ€™t change anything for me.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s good,โ€ he says quietly. Iโ€™m nodding, confused.

Weโ€™ve moved into the bedroom. Weโ€™re sitting on the bed now. โ€œYou wouldnโ€™t mind, then?โ€ Warner asks.

Iโ€™m still confused.

โ€œIf he and I,โ€ Warner says, โ€œspent some time together?โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ I ask, unable to hide my disbelief. โ€œNo,โ€ I say quickly. โ€œNo, of course notโ€”I think that would be amazing.โ€

Warnerโ€™s eyes are on the wall.

โ€œSo โ€ฆ you want to spend time with him?โ€ Iโ€™m trying so hard to give Warner space, and I donโ€™t want to pry, but I just canโ€™t help myself.

โ€œI would like to know my own brother, yes.โ€ โ€œAnd James?โ€ I ask.

Warner laughs a little. โ€œYes. And James.โ€ โ€œSo youโ€™re โ€ฆ happy about this?โ€

He doesnโ€™t answer right away. โ€œI am not unhappy.โ€

I climb into his lap. Cup his face in my hands, tilting his chin up so I can see his eyes. Iโ€™m smiling a stupid smile. โ€œI think thatโ€™s so wonderful,โ€ I tell him.

โ€œDo you?โ€ He grins. โ€œHow interesting.โ€

I nod. Over and over again. And I kiss him once, very softly.

Warner closes his eyes. Smiles slightly, his cheek dimpled on one side.

He looks thoughtful now. โ€œHow strange this has all become.โ€ I feel like I might die of happiness.

Warner picks me up off his lap, lays me back on the bed. Crawls over me, on top of me. โ€œAnd why are you so thrilled?โ€ he asks, trying not to laugh. โ€œYouโ€™re practically buoyant.โ€

โ€œI want you to be happy,โ€ I tell him, my eyes searching his. โ€œI want you to have a family. I want you to be surrounded by people who care about you,โ€ I say. โ€œYou deserve that.โ€

โ€œI have you,โ€ he says, resting his forehead against mine. His eyes shut. โ€œYou should have more than me.โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ he whispers. He shakes his head. His nose grazes mine. โ€œYes.โ€

โ€œWhat about you? And your parents?โ€ he asks me. โ€œDo you ever want to find them?โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ I say quietly. โ€œThey were never parents to me. Besides, I have my friends.โ€

โ€œAnd me,โ€ he says.

โ€œYou are my friend,โ€ I tell him.

โ€œBut not your best friend. Kenji is your best friend.โ€

I try so hard not to laugh at the jealousy in his voice. โ€œYes, but youโ€™re myย favoriteย friend.โ€

Warner leans in, bypasses my lips. โ€œGood,โ€ he whispers, kissing my neck. โ€œNow flip over,โ€ he says. โ€œOn your stomach.โ€

I stare at him.

โ€œPlease,โ€ he says. Smiles. I do. Very slowly.

โ€œWhat are you doing?โ€ I whisper, turning to look at him. He gentles my body back down.

โ€œI want you to know,โ€ he says, pulling on the zipper holding this suit together, โ€œhow much I value your friendship.โ€ The seam is coming apart and my skin is now open to the elements; I bite back a shiver.

The zipper stops at the base of my spine.

โ€œBut Iโ€™d like you to reconsider my title,โ€ Warner says. He drops a soft kiss in the middle of my back. Runs his hands up my skin and pushes the sleeves off my shoulders, leaving kisses against my shoulder blades, the back of my neck. โ€œBecause my friendship,โ€ he whispers, โ€œcomes with so many more benefits than Kenji could ever offer.โ€

I canโ€™t breathe. Canโ€™t.

โ€œDonโ€™t you think?โ€ Warner asks. โ€œYes,โ€ I say too quickly. โ€œYes.โ€

And then Iโ€™m spinning, lost in sensations, and wondering how soon weโ€™ll be losing these moments, and wondering how long itโ€™ll be before weโ€™ll have them again.

I donโ€™t know where weโ€™re going, he and I, but I know I want to get there. We are hours and minutes reaching for the same second, holding hands as we spin forward into new days and the promise of something better.

But though weโ€™ll know forward and weโ€™ve known backward, we will never know the present. This moment and the next one and even the one that wouldโ€™ve been right now are gone, already passed, and all weโ€™re left with are these tired bodies, the only proof that weโ€™ve lived through time and survived it.

Itโ€™ll be worth it, though, in the end. Fighting for a lifetime of this.
