Chapter no 63

Ignite Me (Shatter Me Book 3)

Weโ€™re all sitting around again.

Talking. Discussing. Thinking and planning. James is snoring soundly in the corner.

Weโ€™re all caught somewhere between being excited and being terrified, and yet, somehow, weโ€™re mostly excited. This is, after all, what everyone at Omega Point had always been planning; theyโ€™d joined Castle hoping it would one day come to this.

A chance to defeat The Reestablishment.

Theyโ€™ve all been training for this. Even Adam, who somehow convinced himself to stand with us, has been a soldier. Kenji, a soldier. All of them in peak physical condition. They are all fighters; even Alia, whose quiet shell contains so much. I couldnโ€™t have asked for a more solid group of individuals.

โ€œSo when do you think heโ€™ll be here?โ€ Ian is asking. โ€œTomorrow?โ€ โ€œMaybe,โ€ Kenji says. โ€œBut I donโ€™t think itโ€™ll take him more than two

days.โ€

โ€œI thought he was on a ship? In the middle of the ocean?โ€ Lily asks. โ€œHow is he supposed to get here in two days?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t think itโ€™s the kind of ship youโ€™re thinking of,โ€ Castle says to her. โ€œI imagine he is on an army vessel; one equipped with a landing strip. If he calls for a jet, they will deliver him to us.โ€

โ€œWow.โ€ Brendan leans back, rests on his hands. โ€œThis is really happening, then?ย The supreme commander of The Reestablishment. Winston and I never saw him, not once, even though his men were holding us captive.โ€ He shakes his head. Glances at me. โ€œWhat does he look like?โ€

โ€œHeโ€™s extremely handsome,โ€ I say. Lily laughs out loud.

โ€œIโ€™m serious,โ€ I say to her. โ€œItโ€™s almost sick how beautiful he is.โ€ โ€œReally?โ€ Winston is staring at me, eyes wide.

Kenji nods. โ€œVery pretty guy.โ€ Lily is gawking.

โ€œAnd you said his name is Anderson?โ€ Alia asks. I nod.

โ€œThatโ€™s strange,โ€ Lily says. โ€œI always thought Warnerโ€™s last name wasย Warner, not Anderson.โ€ She thinks for a second. โ€œSo his name is Warner Anderson?โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ I say to her. โ€œYouโ€™re right. Warner is his last nameโ€”but not his dadโ€™s. He took his momโ€™s last name,โ€ I say. โ€œHe didnโ€™t want to be associated with his father.โ€

Adam snorts.

We all look at him.

โ€œSo whatโ€™s Warnerโ€™s first name?โ€ Ian asks. โ€œDo you know?โ€ I nod.

โ€œAnd?โ€ Winston asks. โ€œYouโ€™re not going to tell us?โ€

โ€œAsk him yourself,โ€ I say. โ€œIf he wants to tell you, Iโ€™m sure he will.โ€ โ€œYeah, thatโ€™s not going to happen,โ€ Winston says. โ€œIโ€™m not asking that

guy personal questions.โ€ I try not to laugh.

โ€œSoโ€”do you know Andersonโ€™s first name?โ€ Ian asks. โ€œOr is that a secret, too? I mean this whole thing is really weird, right? That theyโ€™d be so secretive about their names?โ€

โ€œOh,โ€ I say, caught off guard. โ€œIโ€™m not sure. Thereโ€™s a lot of power in a name, I guess. And no,โ€ I say, shaking my head. โ€œI donโ€™t actually know Andersonโ€™s first name. I never asked.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re not missing anything,โ€ Adam says, irritated. โ€œItโ€™s a stupid name.โ€ Heโ€™s staring at his shoes. โ€œHis name is Paris.โ€

โ€œHow did you know that?โ€

I spin around and find Warner standing just outside the open elevator. Itโ€™s still pinging softly, only just now signaling his arrival. The doors close behind him. Heโ€™s staring at Adam in shock.

Adam blinks fast at Warner and then at us, unsure what to do.

โ€œHow did you know that?โ€ Warner demands again. He walks right through our group and grabs Adam by the shirt, moving so quickly Adam has no time to react.

He pins him against the wall.

Iโ€™ve never heard Warner raise his voice like this before. Never seen him so angry. โ€œWho do you answer to, soldier?โ€ he shouts. โ€œWho is your commander?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t know what youโ€™re talking about!โ€ Adam yells back. He tries breaking away and Warner grabs him with both fists, shoving him harder against the wall.

Iโ€™m beginning to panic.

โ€œHow long have you been working for him?โ€ Warner shouts again. โ€œHow long have you been infiltrating my baseโ€”โ€

I jump to my feet. Kenji is close behind. โ€œWarner,โ€ I say, โ€œplease, heโ€™s not a spyโ€”โ€

โ€œThereโ€™s no way he could know something like that,โ€ Warner says to me, still looking at Adam. โ€œNot unless he is a member of the Supreme Guard, where even then it would be questionable. A foot soldier would never have that kind of informationโ€”โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not a Supreme Soldier,โ€ Adam tries to say, โ€œI swearโ€”โ€

โ€œLiar,โ€ Warner barks, shoving him harder against the wall. Adamโ€™s shirt is starting to tear. โ€œWhy were you sent here? What is your mission? Has he sent you to kill me?โ€

โ€œWarner,โ€ I call again, pleading this time, running forward until Iโ€™m in his line of vision. โ€œPleaseโ€”heโ€™s not working for the supreme, I promiseโ€”โ€

โ€œHow can you know?โ€ Warner finally glances at me, just for a second. โ€œIโ€™m telling you,โ€ he says, โ€œitโ€™s impossible for him to know thisโ€”โ€

โ€œHeโ€™s yourย brother,โ€ I finally choke out. โ€œPlease. Heโ€™s your brother. You have the same father.โ€

Warner goes rigid. He turns to me. โ€œWhat?โ€ he breathes.

โ€œItโ€™s true,โ€ I tell him, feeling so heartbroken as I do. โ€œAnd I know you can tell Iโ€™m not lying.โ€ I shake my head. โ€œHeโ€™s your brother. Your father was leading a double life. He abandoned Adam and James a long time ago. After Adamโ€™s mom died.โ€

Warner drops Adam to the floor.

โ€œNo,โ€ Warner says. Heโ€™s not even blinking. Just staring. Hands shaking. I turn to look at Adam, eyes tight with emotion. โ€œTell him,โ€ I say,

desperate now. โ€œTell him the truth.โ€ Adam says nothing.

โ€œDammit, Adam,ย tellย him!โ€

โ€œYou knew, all this time?โ€ Warner asks, turning to face me. โ€œYou knew this and yet you said nothing?โ€

โ€œI wanted toโ€”I really, really wanted to, but I didnโ€™t think it was my placeโ€”โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ he says, cutting me off. Heโ€™s shaking his head. โ€œNo, this doesnโ€™t make any sense. Howโ€”how is that even possible?โ€ He looks up, looks around. โ€œThat doesnโ€™tโ€”โ€

He stops. Looks at Adam.

โ€œTell me the truth,โ€ he says. He walks up to Adam again, looking like he might shake him. โ€œTell me! I have a right to know!โ€

And every moment in the world drops dead just then, because they woke up and realized theyโ€™d never be as important as this one.

โ€œItโ€™s true,โ€ Adam says.

Two words to change the world.

Warner steps back, hand caught in his hair. Heโ€™s rubbing his eyes, his forehead, running his hand down his mouth, his neck. Heโ€™s breathing so hard. โ€œHow?โ€ he finally asks.

And then. And then. The truth.

Little by little. Itโ€™s pulled out of Adam. One word at a time. And the rest of us are looking on, and James is still sleeping, and I go silent as these two brothers have the hardest conversation Iโ€™ve ever had to watch.
