I get to my feet.
Adam is standing across the room, talking to Winston and Ian. Everyone falls silent as I approach. And if Adam is thinking or feeling anything at all about me, he doesnโt show it.
โYou have to tell him,โ I say. โWhat?โ Adam startles.
โYou have to tell him the truth,โ I say. โAnd if you donโt, I will.โ
All at once Adamโs eyes are a frozen ocean, cold and closed off. โDonโt push me, Juliette. Donโt say stupid things youโre going to regret.โ
โYou have no right to keep this from him. He has no one in this world, and he deserves to know.โ
โThis isย noneย of your business,โ Adam says. Heโs towering over me, his fists clenched. โStay out of it. Donโt force me to do something I donโt want to do.โ
โAre you actually threatening me?โ I ask. โAre you insane?โ
โMaybe youโve forgotten,โ he says, โthat Iโm the only one in this room who can shut you off. But I havenโt. You have no power against me.โ
โOf course I have power against you,โ I tell him. โMy touch wasย killing youย when we were togetherโโ
โYeah, well, things have changed a lot since then.โ He grabs my hand, yanking so hard I nearly fall forward. I try to pull away and I canโt.
Heโs too strong. โAdam, let go of meโโ
โCan you feel that?โ he asks, eyes a crazy, stormy shade of blue. โWhat?โ I ask. โFeel what?โ
โExactly,โ he says. โThereโs nothing there. Youโre empty. No power, no fire, no superstrength. Just a girl who canโt throw a punch to save her life. And Iโm perfectly fine. Unharmed.โ
I swallow hard and meet his cold gaze. โSo youโve done it, then?โ I ask. โYou managed to control it?โ
โOf course I did,โ he says angrily. โAnd you couldnโt waitโeven though I told you I could do itโyou couldnโt wait even though I told you I was training so we could be togetherโโ
โIt doesnโt matter anymore.โ Iโm staring at my hand in his, his refusal to let go. โWe wouldโve ended up in the same place sooner or later.โ
โThatโs not trueโthis is proof!โ he says, holding up my hand. โWe couldโve made it workโโ
โWeโre too different now. We want different things. And this?โ I say, nodding at our hands. โAll this managed to prove is that you are extremely good at turning me off.โ
Adamโs jaw clenches. โNow let go of my hand.โ
โHeyโcan we please refrain from putting on a shitshow tonight?โ Kenjiโs voice booms from across the room. Heโs heading toward us. Pissed.
โStay out of this,โ Adam snaps at him.
โItโs calledย consideration. There are other people living in this room, jackass,โ Kenji says once heโs close enough. He grabs Adamโs arm. โSo knock it off.โ
Adam breaks away angrily. โDonโt touch me.โ Kenji shoots him a sharp look. โLet go of her.โ
โYou know what?โ Adam says, his anger taking over. โYouโre so obsessed with herโjumping to her defense all the time, getting involved in our conversations all the timeโyou like her so much? Fine. You can have her.โ
Time freezes all around us. The stage is set:
Adam and his wild eyes, his rage and his red face. Kenji standing next to him, annoyed, slightly confused.
And me, my hand still locked in Adamโs viselike grip, his touch so quickly and easily reducing me back to who I was when we first met.
Iโm completely powerless.
But then, in one movement, everything changes:
Adam grabs Kenjiโs bare hand and presses it into my empty one. For just long enough.
