Chapter no 41

Ignite Me (Shatter Me Book 3)

Adam is already here.

Warner was completely uninterested in dealing with Adam. So heโ€™s gone about his day and his duties, having skipped his morning workout.

And now Iโ€™m here.

Iโ€™ve just stepped out of the elevator, and the pinging sound that signals the opening of the doors has alerted everyone to my presence. Adam was standing in the corner, talking to James. Heโ€™s now staring at me.

Itโ€™s weird, how I feel when I look at him now. There is no extreme emotion in me. No excess of happiness or sadness. Not upset. Not overjoyed. His face is familiar to me; his body, familiar to me. His unsteady smile, as he looks at me, is familiar to me.

How strange that we can go from friends to inseparable to hateful then casual all in one lifetime.

โ€œHi,โ€ I say.

โ€œHey.โ€ He looks away. โ€œHi, James.โ€ I smile.

โ€œHi!โ€ He waves, buoyant. Heโ€™s standing just next to Adam, eyes lit up, clearly thrilled to be back among us. โ€œThis place is so cool.โ€

โ€œIt is,โ€ I agree. โ€œHave you had a chance to take a shower yet? The water is warm here.โ€

โ€œOh, right,โ€ he says, shyly now. โ€œKenji told me about that.โ€

โ€œWhy donโ€™t you get washed up? Delalieu will be bringing lunch down soon. Iโ€™m sure Brendan can show you around the locker roomโ€”and where to put all your stuff. You can have your own locker,โ€ I tell him, glancing at Brendan as I do. He nods, taking the hint and jumping to his feet right away.

โ€œReally?โ€ James is saying. โ€œThatโ€™s so cool. So they just bring the food to you? And you get to shower whenever you want? Is there a curfew?โ€

โ€œYes, yes, and no,โ€ Brendan answers him. He takes Jamesโ€™s hand. Grabs his little bag. โ€œWe can stay up as late as we like,โ€ he tells him. โ€œMaybe after dinner Iโ€™ll show you how to use the bicycles in here,โ€ he says, his voice fading to an echo as he and James disappear into the locker room.

Once James is gone, everyone seems to exhale. I steel myself. Step forward.

โ€œIโ€™m really sorry,โ€ Adam says first, crossing the room to meet me. โ€œYou have no ideaโ€”โ€

โ€œAdam.โ€ I cut him off, anxious. Nervous. I have to say this and I have to say it now. โ€œKenji lied to you.โ€

Adam stops. Stills.

โ€œI havenโ€™t been crying over you,โ€ I say, wondering if itโ€™s even possible to deliver this kind of information without both humiliating him and breaking his heart. I feel like such a monster. โ€œAnd Iโ€™m really, really happy youโ€™re here, but I donโ€™t think we should be together anymore.โ€

โ€œOh,โ€ he says. Rocks back on his heels. Drops his eyes. Runs both hands through his hair. โ€œRight.โ€

Out of the corner of my eye, I see Kenji looking at me. Heโ€™s waving his hand, trying to get my attention, but Iโ€™m still too mad at him right now. I donโ€™t want to talk to him until Iโ€™ve fixed this.

โ€œAdam,โ€ I say. โ€œIโ€™m sorryโ€”โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ he says, holding up a hand to stop me. He looks dazed, sort of. Strange. โ€œItโ€™s okay. Really. I already knew you were going to say that to me.โ€ He laughs a little, but awkwardly. โ€œI guess I thought knowing in advance would make it feel a lot less like I was being punched in the gut.โ€ He cringes. โ€œBut nope. Still hurts like hell.โ€ He backs up against the wall. Slides down to the floor.

Heโ€™s not looking at me.

โ€œHow did you know?โ€ I ask. โ€œHow did you know what I was going to say?โ€

โ€œI told him before you got here,โ€ Kenji says, stepping forward. He shoots me a sharp look. โ€œI came clean. I told him what we talked about yesterday. All the things you said.โ€

โ€œThen why is he still here?โ€ I ask, stunned. I turn to face Adam. โ€œI thought you said you never wanted to see me again.โ€

โ€œI never shouldโ€™ve said that.โ€ Adam is still looking at the floor. โ€œSo โ€ฆ youโ€™re okay?โ€ I ask him. โ€œWith Warner?โ€

Adam looks up in disgust, so different in an instant. โ€œAre you out of your mind? I want to put his head through a goddamn wall.โ€

โ€œThen why are you still here?โ€ I ask again. โ€œI donโ€™t understandโ€”โ€ โ€œBecause I donโ€™t want toย die,โ€ he says to me. โ€œBecause Iโ€™ve been

racking my brain trying to figure out how to feed my little brother and Iโ€™ve come up with exactly jack and shit in the way of solutions. Because itโ€™s cold as hell outside, and heโ€™s hungry, and because our electricity is going to get shut off soon.โ€ Adam is breathing hard. โ€œI didnโ€™t know what else to do. So now Iโ€™m here, my pride in the toilet, hoping I can stay in my ex-girlfriendโ€™s newย boyfriendโ€™sย bachelor pad, and I want to kill myself.โ€ He swallows. โ€œAnd I can suffer through that,โ€ he says, โ€œif it means James will be safe. But right now Iโ€™m still waiting for your shithead of a boyfriend to show up and try to kill me.โ€

โ€œHeโ€™s not my boyfriend,โ€ I say quietly. โ€œAnd heโ€™s not going to kill you.

He doesnโ€™t even care that youโ€™re here.โ€

Adam laughs out loud. โ€œBullshit,โ€ he says. โ€œIโ€™m serious.โ€

Adam gets to his feet. Studies my eyes. โ€œYouโ€™re telling me I can stay here, in his room, and eat his food, and heโ€™s just going toย letย me?โ€ Adamโ€™s eyes are wide, incredulous. โ€œYou still donโ€™t understand this guy. He doesnโ€™t operate the way you think he does, Juliette. He doesnโ€™t think like a normal human being. Heโ€™s a freaking sociopath. And you really are insane,โ€ he says, โ€œif you think itโ€™s okay to be with someone like that.โ€

I flinch, stung. โ€œBe very careful how you speak to me, Adam. I wonโ€™t tolerate your insults again.โ€

โ€œI canโ€™t even believe you,โ€ he says. โ€œI canโ€™t believe you can stand there and treat me like this.โ€ His face is twisted into something so intensely unattractive.

Anger.

โ€œIโ€™m not trying to hurt youโ€”โ€

โ€œMaybe you shouldโ€™ve remembered that before you ran into the arms of some psycho!โ€

โ€œCalm your ass down, Kent.โ€ I hear Kenjiโ€™s sharp warning from the corner of the room. โ€œI thought you said you were going to be cool.โ€

โ€œI am being cool,โ€ he says, his voice rising, eyes on fire. โ€œIโ€™m a freaking saint. I donโ€™t know anyone else who would be as generous as I am right

now.โ€ He looks back at me. โ€œYou were lying to me the whole time we were together. You wereย cheatingย on meโ€”โ€

โ€œNo I wasnโ€™t.โ€

โ€œThis kind of shit doesnโ€™t just happen overnight,โ€ he shouts. โ€œYou donโ€™t just fall out of love with someone like thatโ€”โ€

โ€œWeโ€™reย done, Adam. Iโ€™m not doing this again. Youโ€™re welcome to stay here,โ€ I tell him. โ€œEspecially for Jamesโ€™s sake. But you canโ€™t stay here and insult me. You have no right.โ€

Adam tenses his jaw. Grabs his things. And charges into the locker room.
