Adam is ignoring me.
He hasnโt said a word about yesterday; doesnโt betray even a hint of anger or frustration. He talks to everyone, laughs with James, helps get breakfast together. He also pretends I donโt exist.
I tried saying good morning to him and he pretended not to hear me. Or maybe he really didnโt hear me. Maybe heโs managed to train his brain not to hear or see me at all anymore.
I feel like Iโm being punched in the heart. Repeatedly.
โSo what do you guys do all day?โ I ask, trying desperately to make conversation. Weโre all sitting on the floor, eating bowls of granola. We woke up late, ate breakfast late. No one has bothered to clean up the blankets yet, and Warner is supposed to be here in about an hour.
โNothing,โ Ian says.
โWe try not to die, mostly,โ Winston says. โItโs boring as hell,โ Lily says.
โWhy?โ Kenji asks. โYou have something in mind?โ
โOh,โ I say. โNo, I just โฆโ I hesitate. โWell, Warnerโs going to be here in an hour, so I wasnโt sure ifโโ
Something crashes in the kitchen. A bowl. In the sink. Silverware flying everywhere.
Adam steps into the living room. Hisย eyes.
โHeโs not coming back here.โ These, the first five words Adam says to
me.
โBut I already told him,โ I try to say. โHeโs going toโโ
โThis isย myย home,โ he says, eyes flashing. โI wonโt let him in here.โ
Iโm staring at Adam, heart beating out of my chest. I never thought heโd
be capable of looking at me like he hates me. Really, really hates me.
โKent, manโ,โ I hear Kenji say. โNO.โ
โCโmon bro, it doesnโt have to be like thisโโ
โIf you want to see him so badly,โ Adam says to me, โyou can get the hell out of my house. But heโs not coming back here. Not ever.โ
I blink.
This isnโt really happening.
โWhere is she supposed to go?โ Kenji says to him. โYou want her to stand on the side of the street? So someone can report her and get her killed? Are you out of your mind?โ
โI donโt give a shit anymore,โ Adam says. โShe can go do whatever the hell she wants.โ He turns to me again. โYou want to be with him?โ He points to the door. โGo. Drop dead.โ
Ice is eating away at my body.
I stumble to my feet. My legs are unsteady. Iโm nodding and I donโt know why but I canโt seem to stop. I make my way to the door.
โJulietteโโ
I spin around, even though itโs Kenji calling my name, not Adam. โDonโt go anywhere,โ Kenji says to me. โDonโt move. This is
ridiculous.โ
This has spiraled out of control. This isnโt just a fight anymore. There is pure, unadulterated hatred in Adamโs eyes, and Iโm so blindsided by the impossibility of itโso thrown off guardโthat I donโt know how to react. I never couldโve anticipated thisโnever couldโve imagined things could turn out this way.
The real Adam wouldnโt kick me out of his house like this. He wouldnโt talk to me like this. Not the Adam I know. The Adam I thought I knew.
โKent,โ Kenji says again, โyou need to calm down. There is nothing going on between her and Warner, okay? Sheโs just trying to do what she thinks is rightโโ
โBullshit!โ Adam explodes. โThatโs bullshit, and you know it, and youโre a jackass for denying it. Sheโs been lying to me this whole damn timeโโ
โYou guys arenโt even together, man, you canโt lay a claim on herโโ โWe never broke up!โ Adam shouts.
โOf course you did,โ Kenji snaps back. โEvery single person at Point heard your melodramatic ass in the freaking tunnels. We all know you
broke up. So stop fighting it.โ
โThat didnโt count as a breakup,โ Adam says, his voice rough. โWe still loved each otherโโ
โOkay, you know what? Whatever. I donโt care.โ Kenji waves his hands, rolls his eyes. โBut weโre in the middle of aย warย right now. For shitโs sake, she was shot in the chest a couple days ago and almost died. Donโt you think itโs possible sheโs really trying to think of something bigger than just the two of you? Warnerโs crazy, but he can helpโโ
โShe looks at that psycho like sheโs inย loveย with him,โ Adam barks back. โYou think I donโt know what that look is? You think I wouldnโt be able to tell? She used to look atย meย like that. I know herโI know her so wellโโ
โMaybe you donโt.โ โStop defending her!โ
โYou donโt even know what youโre saying,โ Kenji tells him. โYouโre acting crazyโโ
โI was happier,โ Adam says, โwhen I thought she wasย dead.โ
โYou donโt mean that. Donโt say things like that, man. Once you say that kind of shit you canโt take it backโโ
โOh, I mean it,โ Adam says. โI really, really mean it.โ He finally looks at me. Fists clenched. โThinking you were dead,โ he says to me, โwas so much better. It hurt so much less than this.โ
The walls are moving. Iโm seeing spots, blinking at nothing. This isnโt really happening, I keep telling myself.
This is just a terrible nightmare, and when I wake up Adam will be gentle and kind and wonderful again. Because he isnโt cruel like this. Not to me. Never to me.
โYou, of all people,โ Adam says to me. He looks so disgusted. โI trusted youโtold you things I never shouldโve told youโand now youโre going out of your way to throw it all back in my face. I canโt believe youโd do this to me. That youโd fall forย him. What the hell is wrong with you?โ he demands, his voice rising in pitch. โHow sick in the head do you have to be?โ
Iโm so afraid to speak.
So afraid to move my lips.
Iโm so scared that if I move even an inch, my body will snap in half and everyone will see that my insides are made up of nothing but all the tears
Iโm swallowing back right now.
Adam shakes his head. Laughs a sad, twisted laugh. โYou wonโt even deny it,โ he says. โUnbelievable.โ
โLeave her alone, Kent,โ Kenji says suddenly, his voice deathly sharp. โIโm serious.โ
โThis isย noneย of your businessโโ โYouโre being a dickโโ
โYou think I give a shit what you think?โ Adam turns on him. โThis isnโt your fight, Kenji. Just because sheโs too much of a coward to say anything doesnโt mean you have to defend herโโ
I feel like Iโve stepped outside of myself. Like my body has collapsed onto the floor and Iโm looking on, watching as Adam transforms into a completely different human being. Every word. Every insult he hurls at me seems to fracture my bones. Pretty soon Iโll be nothing but blood and a beating heart.
โIโm leaving,โ Adam is saying. โIโm leaving, and when I come back, I want her gone.โ
Donโt cry, I keep saying to myself. Donโt cry.
This isnโt real.
โYou and me,โ Adam is saying to me now, his voice so rough, so angry, โweโreย done. Weโre finished,โ he snaps. โI never want to see you again. Not anywhere in this world, and definitely not in my own goddamn house.โ He stares at me, chest heaving. โSo get the hell out. Get out before I get back.โ
He stalks across the room. Grabs a coat. Yanks the door open. The walls shake as he slams it shut.
