Chapter no 15

Ignite Me (Shatter Me Book 3)

Kenji is stomping toward me, his eyes blazing.

โ€œWhere the hell did he go? Did you see where he went?โ€

I shake my head as I reach forward, grabbing his arms in an attempt to focus his eyes. โ€œTalk to me, Kenji. Tell me what happenedโ€”where is everyoneโ€”?โ€

โ€œThere is noย everyone!โ€ he snaps, breaking away. โ€œOmega Point is gone

โ€”everything goneโ€”everythingโ€”โ€ He drops to his knees, heaving as he falls forward, his forehead digging into the snow. โ€œI thought you were dead, tooโ€”I thoughtโ€”โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ I gasp. โ€œNo, Kenjiโ€”they canโ€™t all have diedโ€”not everyoneโ€”โ€ Not Adam.

Not Adam.

Please please please notย Adam

Iโ€™d been too optimistic about today. Iโ€™d been lying to myself.

I didnโ€™t really believe Warner. I didnโ€™t believe it could be this bad. But now, to see the truth, and to hear Kenjiโ€™s agonyโ€”the reality of all that happened is hitting me so hard I feel like Iโ€™m falling backward into my own grave.

My knees have hit the ground.

โ€œPlease,โ€ Iโ€™m saying, โ€œplease tell me there are othersโ€”Adam has to be aliveโ€”โ€

โ€œI grew up here,โ€ Kenji is saying. Heโ€™s not listening to me and I donโ€™t recognize his raw, aching voice. I want the old Kenji, the one who knew how to take charge, to take control. And this isnโ€™t him.

This Kenji is terrifying me.

โ€œThis was my whole life,โ€ he says, looking toward the crater that used to be Omega Point. โ€œThe only placeโ€”all those peopleโ€”โ€ He chokes. โ€œThey were myย family. My only familyโ€”โ€

โ€œKenji, please โ€ฆโ€ I try to shake him. I need him to snap out of his grief before I succumb to it, too. We need to move out of plain sight and Iโ€™m only now beginning to realize that Kenji doesnโ€™t care. Heย wantsย to put himself in danger. Heย wantsย to fight. He wants toย die.

I canโ€™t let that happen.

Someone needs to take control of this situation right now and right now I might be the only one capable.

โ€œGet up,โ€ I snap, my voice harsher than I intended. โ€œYou need to get up, and you need to stop acting reckless. You know weโ€™re not safe out here, and we have to move. Where are you staying?โ€ I grab his arm and pull, but he wonโ€™t budge. โ€œGet up!โ€ I shout again. โ€œGetโ€”โ€

And then, just like that, I remember Iโ€™m a whole hell of a lot stronger than Kenji will ever be. It almost makes me smile.

I close my eyes and focus, trying to remember everything Kenji taught me, everything Iโ€™ve learned about how to control my strength, how to tap into it when I need to. I spent so many years bottling everything up and locking it away that it still takes some time to remember itโ€™s there, waiting for me to harness it. But the moment I welcome it, I feel it rush into me. Itโ€™s a raw power so potent it makes me feel invincible.

And then, just like that, I yank Kenji up off the ground and toss him over my shoulder.

Me.

I do that.

Kenji, of course, unleashes a string of the foulest expletives Iโ€™ve ever heard. Heโ€™s kicking at me but I can hardly feel it; my arms are wrapped loosely around him, my strength carefully reined in so as not to crush him. Heโ€™s angry, but at least heโ€™s swearing again. This is something I recognize.

I cut him off midexpletive. โ€œTell me where youโ€™re staying,โ€ I say to him, โ€œand pull yourself together. You canโ€™t fall apart on me now.โ€

Kenji is silent a moment.

โ€œHey, um, Iโ€™m sorry to bother you, but Iโ€™m looking for a friend of mine,โ€ he says. โ€œHave you seen her? Sheโ€™s a tiny little thing, cries a lot, spends too much time with her feelingsโ€”โ€

โ€œShut up, Kenji.โ€

โ€œOh wait!โ€ he says. โ€œItย isย you.โ€ โ€œWhere are we going?โ€

โ€œWhen are you going to put me down?โ€ he counters, no longer amused. โ€œI mean, Iโ€™ve got an excellent view of your ass from here, but if you donโ€™t mind me staringโ€”โ€

I drop him without thinking. โ€œGoddammit, Julietteโ€”what theย hellโ€”โ€

โ€œHowโ€™s the view from down there?โ€ I stand over his splayed body, arms crossed over my chest.

โ€œI hate you.โ€ โ€œGet up, please.โ€

โ€œWhen did you learn to do that?โ€ he grumbles, stumbling to his feet and rubbing his back.

I roll my eyes. Squint into the distance. Nothing and no one in sight, so far. โ€œI didnโ€™t.โ€

โ€œOh, right,โ€ he says. โ€œBecause that makes sense. Because tossing a grown-ass man over your shoulders is just so freaking easy. That shit just comes naturally to you.โ€

I shrug.

Kenji lets out a low whistle. โ€œCocky as hell, too.โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€ I shade my eyes against the cold sunlight. โ€œI think spending all that time with you really screwed me up.โ€

โ€œOhhh-ho,โ€ he says, clapping his hands together, unamused. โ€œStand up, princess. Youโ€™re a comedian.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m already standing up.โ€ โ€œItโ€™s called a joke, smart-ass.โ€

โ€œWhere are we going?โ€ I ask him again. I start walking in no particular direction. โ€œI really need to know where weโ€™re headed.โ€

โ€œUnregulated turf.โ€ He falls into step with me, taking my hand to lead the way. We go invisible immediately. โ€œIt was the only place we could think of.โ€

โ€œWe?โ€

โ€œYeah. Itโ€™s Adamโ€™s old place, remember? Itโ€™s where I firstโ€”โ€

I stop walking, chest heaving. Iโ€™m crushing Kenjiโ€™s hand in mine and he yanks it free, unleashing expletives as he does, making us visible again. โ€œAdam is still alive?โ€ I ask, searching his eyes.

โ€œOf course heโ€™s still alive.โ€ Kenji shoots me a dirty look as he rubs at his hand. โ€œHave you heard nothing Iโ€™ve been saying to you?โ€

โ€œBut you said everyone was dead,โ€ I gasp. โ€œYou saidโ€”โ€

โ€œEveryoneย isย dead,โ€ Kenji says, his features darkening again. โ€œThere were over a hundred of us at Omega Point. There are only nine of us left.โ€
