Kenji is stomping toward me, his eyes blazing.
โWhere the hell did he go? Did you see where he went?โ
I shake my head as I reach forward, grabbing his arms in an attempt to focus his eyes. โTalk to me, Kenji. Tell me what happenedโwhere is everyoneโ?โ
โThere is noย everyone!โ he snaps, breaking away. โOmega Point is gone
โeverything goneโeverythingโโ He drops to his knees, heaving as he falls forward, his forehead digging into the snow. โI thought you were dead, tooโI thoughtโโ
โNo,โ I gasp. โNo, Kenjiโthey canโt all have diedโnot everyoneโโ Not Adam.
Not Adam.
Please please please notย Adam
Iโd been too optimistic about today. Iโd been lying to myself.
I didnโt really believe Warner. I didnโt believe it could be this bad. But now, to see the truth, and to hear Kenjiโs agonyโthe reality of all that happened is hitting me so hard I feel like Iโm falling backward into my own grave.
My knees have hit the ground.
โPlease,โ Iโm saying, โplease tell me there are othersโAdam has to be aliveโโ
โI grew up here,โ Kenji is saying. Heโs not listening to me and I donโt recognize his raw, aching voice. I want the old Kenji, the one who knew how to take charge, to take control. And this isnโt him.
This Kenji is terrifying me.
โThis was my whole life,โ he says, looking toward the crater that used to be Omega Point. โThe only placeโall those peopleโโ He chokes. โThey were myย family. My only familyโโ
โKenji, please โฆโ I try to shake him. I need him to snap out of his grief before I succumb to it, too. We need to move out of plain sight and Iโm only now beginning to realize that Kenji doesnโt care. Heย wantsย to put himself in danger. Heย wantsย to fight. He wants toย die.
I canโt let that happen.
Someone needs to take control of this situation right now and right now I might be the only one capable.
โGet up,โ I snap, my voice harsher than I intended. โYou need to get up, and you need to stop acting reckless. You know weโre not safe out here, and we have to move. Where are you staying?โ I grab his arm and pull, but he wonโt budge. โGet up!โ I shout again. โGetโโ
And then, just like that, I remember Iโm a whole hell of a lot stronger than Kenji will ever be. It almost makes me smile.
I close my eyes and focus, trying to remember everything Kenji taught me, everything Iโve learned about how to control my strength, how to tap into it when I need to. I spent so many years bottling everything up and locking it away that it still takes some time to remember itโs there, waiting for me to harness it. But the moment I welcome it, I feel it rush into me. Itโs a raw power so potent it makes me feel invincible.
And then, just like that, I yank Kenji up off the ground and toss him over my shoulder.
Me.
I do that.
Kenji, of course, unleashes a string of the foulest expletives Iโve ever heard. Heโs kicking at me but I can hardly feel it; my arms are wrapped loosely around him, my strength carefully reined in so as not to crush him. Heโs angry, but at least heโs swearing again. This is something I recognize.
I cut him off midexpletive. โTell me where youโre staying,โ I say to him, โand pull yourself together. You canโt fall apart on me now.โ
Kenji is silent a moment.
โHey, um, Iโm sorry to bother you, but Iโm looking for a friend of mine,โ he says. โHave you seen her? Sheโs a tiny little thing, cries a lot, spends too much time with her feelingsโโ
โShut up, Kenji.โ
โOh wait!โ he says. โItย isย you.โ โWhere are we going?โ
โWhen are you going to put me down?โ he counters, no longer amused. โI mean, Iโve got an excellent view of your ass from here, but if you donโt mind me staringโโ
I drop him without thinking. โGoddammit, Julietteโwhat theย hellโโ
โHowโs the view from down there?โ I stand over his splayed body, arms crossed over my chest.
โI hate you.โ โGet up, please.โ
โWhen did you learn to do that?โ he grumbles, stumbling to his feet and rubbing his back.
I roll my eyes. Squint into the distance. Nothing and no one in sight, so far. โI didnโt.โ
โOh, right,โ he says. โBecause that makes sense. Because tossing a grown-ass man over your shoulders is just so freaking easy. That shit just comes naturally to you.โ
I shrug.
Kenji lets out a low whistle. โCocky as hell, too.โ
โYeah.โ I shade my eyes against the cold sunlight. โI think spending all that time with you really screwed me up.โ
โOhhh-ho,โ he says, clapping his hands together, unamused. โStand up, princess. Youโre a comedian.โ
โIโm already standing up.โ โItโs called a joke, smart-ass.โ
โWhere are we going?โ I ask him again. I start walking in no particular direction. โI really need to know where weโre headed.โ
โUnregulated turf.โ He falls into step with me, taking my hand to lead the way. We go invisible immediately. โIt was the only place we could think of.โ
โWe?โ
โYeah. Itโs Adamโs old place, remember? Itโs where I firstโโ
I stop walking, chest heaving. Iโm crushing Kenjiโs hand in mine and he yanks it free, unleashing expletives as he does, making us visible again. โAdam is still alive?โ I ask, searching his eyes.
โOf course heโs still alive.โ Kenji shoots me a dirty look as he rubs at his hand. โHave you heard nothing Iโve been saying to you?โ
โBut you said everyone was dead,โ I gasp. โYou saidโโ
โEveryoneย isย dead,โ Kenji says, his features darkening again. โThere were over a hundred of us at Omega Point. There are only nine of us left.โ
