Chapter no 14

Ignite Me (Shatter Me Book 3)

Warner tackles me to the ground just as the sound of gunshots fills the air.

His arms are under me, cradling me to his chest, his body shielding mine from whatever imminent danger weโ€™ve just gotten ourselves into. My heart is beating so loudly I can hardly hear Warnerโ€™s voice as he speaks into my ear. โ€œAre you all right?โ€ he whispers, pulling me tighter against him.

I try to nod.

โ€œStay down,โ€ he says. โ€œDonโ€™t move.โ€

I wasnโ€™t planning on it, I donโ€™t say to him.

โ€œSTEP AWAY FROM HER, YOU WORTHLESS SACK OF SHITโ€”โ€

My body goes stiff.

That voice. I know that voice.

I hear footsteps coming closer, crunching on the snow and ice and dirt. Warner loosens his hold around me, and I realize heโ€™s reaching for his gun.

โ€œKenjiโ€”noโ€”,โ€ I try to shout, my voice muffled by the snow. โ€œGET UP!โ€ Kenji bellows, still moving closer. โ€œStand up, coward!โ€ Iโ€™ve officially begun to panic.

Warnerโ€™s lips brush against my ear. โ€œIโ€™ll be right back.โ€

Just as I turn to protest, Warnerโ€™s weight is lifted. His body gone. Heโ€™s completely disappeared.

I scramble to my feet, spinning around. My eyes land on Kenji.

Heโ€™s stopped in place, confused and scanning the area, and Iโ€™m so happy to see him that I canโ€™t be bothered to care about Warner right now. Iโ€™m almost ready to cry. I squeak out Kenjiโ€™s name.

His eyes lock on to mine.

He charges forward, closing the gap between us and tackling me in a hug so fierce he practically cuts off my circulation. โ€œHolyย shitย itโ€™s good to see you,โ€ he says, breathless, squeezing me tighter.

I cling to him, so relieved, so stunned. I press my eyes shut, unable to stop the tears.

Kenji pulls back to look me in the eye, his face bright with pain and joy. โ€œWhat the hell are you doing out here? I thought you wereย deadโ€”โ€

โ€œI thoughtย youย were dead!โ€

He stops then. The smile vanishes from his face. โ€œWhere the hell did Warner go?โ€ he says, eyes taking in our surroundings. โ€œYou were with him, right? Iโ€™m not losing my mind, am I?โ€

โ€œYesโ€”listenโ€”Warner brought me here,โ€ I tell him, trying to speak calmly, hoping to cool the anger in his eyes. โ€œBut heโ€™s not trying to fight. When he told me about what happened to Omega Point, I didnโ€™t believe him, so I asked him to show me proofโ€”โ€

โ€œIs that right?โ€ Kenji says, eyes flashing with a kind of hatred Iโ€™ve never seen in him before. โ€œHe came to show off what they did? To show you how many people he MURDERED!โ€ Kenji breaks away from me, shaking with fury. โ€œDid he tell you how many children were in there? Did he tell you how many of our men and women wereย slaughteredย because of him?โ€ He stops, heaving. โ€œDid he tell you that?โ€ he asks again, screaming into the air. โ€œCOME BACK OUT HERE, YOU SICK BASTARD!โ€

โ€œKenji,ย noโ€”โ€

But Kenjiโ€™s already gone, darting away so quickly heโ€™s just a speck in the distance now. I know heโ€™s searching the vast space for glimpses of Warner and I need to do something, I need to stop him but I donโ€™t know howโ€”

โ€œDonโ€™t move.โ€

Warnerโ€™s whispers are at my ear, his hands planted firmly on my shoulders. I try to spin around and he holds me in place. โ€œI said donโ€™t move.โ€

โ€œWhat are you dโ€”โ€

โ€œShhhh,โ€ he says. โ€œNo one can see me.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ I crane my neck to try and glance behind me, but my head knocks against Warnerโ€™s chin. Hisย invisibleย chin.

โ€œNo,โ€ I hear myself gasp. โ€œBut youโ€™re not touching himโ€”โ€

โ€œLook straight ahead,โ€ he whispers. โ€œIt wonโ€™t do us any good for you to be caught talking to invisible people.โ€

I turn my face forward. Kenji is no longer in sight. โ€œHow?โ€ I ask Warner. โ€œHow did youโ€”โ€

Warner shrugs behind me. โ€œIโ€™ve felt different since we did that experiment with your power. Now that I know exactly what itโ€™s like to take hold of another ability, Iโ€™m more easily able to recognize it. Like right now,โ€ he says. โ€œI feel as though I could quite literally reach forward and take hold of your energy. It was just as simple with Kenji,โ€ he says. โ€œHe was standing right there. My survival instincts took over.โ€

And even though this is a terrible moment to dwell on these things, I canโ€™t help but allow myself to panic. That Warner can so easily project his powers. With no training. No practice.

He can tap into my abilities and use them as he pleases. This canโ€™t possibly be good.

Warnerโ€™s hands squeeze my shoulders. โ€œWhat are you doing?โ€ I whisper.

โ€œIโ€™m trying to see if I can pass the power on to youโ€”if I can retransfer it and make us both invisibleโ€”but it seems Iโ€™m unable. Once Iโ€™ve taken the energy from someone else, I canย useย it, but I canโ€™t seem to share it. After I release the energy, it can only be returned to the owner.โ€

โ€œHow do you know so much already?โ€ I ask, astonished. โ€œYou just learned about this a few days ago.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ve been practicing,โ€ he says.

โ€œBut how? With who?โ€ I pause. โ€œOh.โ€

โ€œYes,โ€ he says. โ€œItโ€™s been rather incredible having you stay with me. For so many reasons.โ€ His hands fall from my shoulders. โ€œI was worried I might be able to hurt you with your own power. I wasnโ€™t sure I could absorb it without accidentally using it against you. But we seem to cancel each other out,โ€ he says. โ€œOnce I take it from you, I can only ever give it back.โ€

Iโ€™m not breathing.

โ€œLetโ€™s go,โ€ Warner says. โ€œKenji is moving out of range and I wonโ€™t be able to hold on to his energy for much longer. We have to get out of here.โ€

โ€œI canโ€™t leave,โ€ I tell him. โ€œI canโ€™t just abandon Kenji, not like thisโ€”โ€ โ€œHeโ€™s going to try and kill me, love. And while I know Iโ€™ve proved

otherwise in your case, I can assure you Iโ€™m generally incapable of standing by as someone makes an attempt on my life. So unless you want to watch me shoot him first, I suggest we get out of here as soon as possible. I can feel him circling back.โ€

โ€œNo. You can go. Youย shouldย go. But Iโ€™m going to stay here.โ€ Warner stills behind me. โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œGo,โ€ I tell him. โ€œYou have to go to the compoundsโ€”you have things to take care of. You should go. But I need to be here. I have to know whatโ€™s happened to everyone else, and I have to move forward from there.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re asking me to leave you here,โ€ he says, not bothering to hide his shock. โ€œIndefinitely.โ€

โ€œYes,โ€ I say to him. โ€œIโ€™m not leaving until I get some answers. And youโ€™re right. Kenji will definitely shoot first and ask questions later, so itโ€™s best that you leave. Iโ€™ll talk to him, try to tell him whatโ€™s happened. Maybe we could all work togetherโ€”โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œIt doesnโ€™t just have to be me and you,โ€ I tell him. โ€œYou said you wanted to help me kill your father and take down The Reestablishment, right?โ€

Warner nods slowly against the back of my head. โ€œOkay. So.โ€ I take a deep breath. โ€œI accept your offer.โ€ Warner goes rigid. โ€œYou accept my offer.โ€

โ€œYes.โ€

โ€œDo you understand what youโ€™re saying?โ€

โ€œI wouldnโ€™t say it if I didnโ€™t mean it. Iโ€™m not sure Iโ€™ll be able to do this without you.โ€

I feel the breath rush out of him, his heart beating hard against my back. โ€œBut I need to know who else is still alive,โ€ I insist. โ€œAnd the group of

us can work together. Weโ€™ll be stronger that way, and weโ€™ll all be fighting toward the same goalโ€”โ€

โ€œNo.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s the only wayโ€”โ€

โ€œI have to go,โ€ he says, spinning me around. โ€œKenji is almost here.โ€ He shoves a hard plastic object into my hand. โ€œActivate this pager,โ€ he says, โ€œwhenever youโ€™re ready. Keep it with you and Iโ€™ll know where to find you.โ€

โ€œButโ€”โ€

โ€œYou have four hours,โ€ he says. โ€œIf I donโ€™t hear from you before then, Iโ€™ll assume you are in some kind of danger, and I will come find you myself.โ€ Heโ€™s still holding my hand, the pager still pressed against my palm. Itโ€™s the craziest feeling, to be touched by someone you canโ€™t see. โ€œDo you understand?โ€

I nod, once. I have no idea where to look.

And then I freeze, every inch of me hot and cold all at once because he presses his lips to the back of my fingers in one soft, tender moment and when he pulls away Iโ€™m reeling, heady, unsteady.

Just as Iโ€™m regaining my footing, I hear the familiar sound of an electric thrum, and realize Warner has already begun to drive away.

And Iโ€™m left to wonder what on earth Iโ€™ve just agreed to.
