Iโm surprised the next time Sylvie calls when I am with him. I had somehow forgotten her. I had somehow forgotten that the world was larger than just us.
Weโre watching a movie on my couch. I pause it as he says โHello,โ and thatโs how I know that itโs herโthe way he says it. He also says โuh-huhโ five times, and โthatโs coolโ twice. He says โnothing muchโ once and glances at me. I look back at him and keep looking after he has turned away from me again.
โOkay,โ Finny says, โIโll remember.โ He hangs up. โYou can push play,โ he says to me.
โWas that Sylvie?โ โYeah.โ
โHuh.โ I donโt know what I mean by that, but Finny answers me anyway.
โI canโt break up with her over the phone.โ โI didnโt say you should,โ I say.
โWell, you justโnever mind.โ โWhat?โ
โNothing,โ Finny says.
โI was thinking that it was weird how youโre going to break up with her but she still callsโI mean, it makes sense โcause she doesnโt know, but itโs weird.โ
โI guess so,โ he says. I look down at the remote control in my hands, but I donโt push play.
โYou never told me,โ I say.
โWhat?โ His quiet voice matches mine.
โWhy,โ I say. He doesnโt say anything, and he doesnโt shrug. He doesnโt look over at me. He has not moved since he told me to push play. I wait.
โSheโs not who I want to be with,โ he says โSheโs notโthatโs all.โ โOkay,โ I say, and I nod, as if he has said a lot more. He looks up at me
now.
โDo you miss Jamie?โ His question startles me; I can see Finny studying the reaction on my face.
โI donโt know,โ I say, because I want to tell him the truth. โI donโt want to say yes because I donโt want him back, but I canโt say no either because I do care about him still. Heโs still Jamie.โ
โDo you love him?โ I shake my head.
โIโm notย inย love with him.โ We are quiet again, and I think what a relief it is, how strange it is, to say that I am not in love with Jamie.
โWhy are you smiling?โ Finny says to me.
โI donโt love Jamie,โ I say, and I laugh because it sounds so funny to say. โIโm glad that youโre happy,โ Finny says.
โI am,โ I say. โActually, Iโve been really happy.โ Finnyโs eyes soften, and weโre looking at each other.
It was another moment when one of us could have said something, could have given us time, but neither of us did. We looked at each other until I couldnโt bear it anymore.
โWe should finish this and then go get something to eat,โ I say. Weโve invented a new meal, one that takes place after midnight and before dawn, and we rarely ever miss it. Itโs more time that we can spend together without saying what we should.
โGood idea,โ Finny says, but it isnโt. Sylvie will be home soon.
