If He Had Been with Me

If you want me to, I can clear my schedule and go down with you and your mother when you move into the dorms,โ€ Dad says. Weโ€™re sitting outside at the downtown restaurant he chose. He has a new red car that reminds me of Finnyโ€™s, but his doesnโ€™t even have a backseat. โ€œItโ€™s an important day,โ€ he continues, โ€œand if you want me to be there, I will be.โ€

โ€œSo if I donโ€™t want you to come, you wonโ€™t?โ€ I ask.

โ€œIf you want me to, I will, thatโ€™s all Iโ€™m saying.โ€ Our appetizer comes and my dad ignores the waitress as she lays the plates down. He doesnโ€™t even look up.

โ€œThanks,โ€ I say to her. She ignores me too and walks away from us.

โ€œYou donโ€™t have to make a decision right now, but the closer we get to the date the harder it will be.โ€ He dips his toasted ravioli in marinara sauce. โ€œNot that I wonโ€™t do it anyway.โ€ He takes a bite and chews.

โ€œIf itโ€™s what I want,โ€ I say. He nods. โ€œAnd only if itโ€™s what I want. If you wanted to come and I didnโ€™t want you to, you wouldnโ€™t come anyway.โ€

Dad wipes his hands on his napkin and sighs. โ€œHoney, if you donโ€™t want me thereโ€”โ€

โ€œWhat if I donโ€™t want Mom there? Can I just tell her not to come and then she wonโ€™t?โ€

โ€œNow, honey, your mom has to come. That is not optional.โ€ โ€œWhy? Why are you optional and sheโ€™s not?โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re saying that you want to move into the dorms without either of your parents there?โ€ Dad says.

โ€œNo,โ€ I say, โ€œthatโ€™s not what Iโ€™m saying. Iโ€™m saying thatโ€”never mind.โ€

We look back down at our food. Itโ€™s too hot out to be perfect weather.

โ€œYour mother told me about Jamie,โ€ he says after a while. The name startles me.

โ€œOh, yeah,โ€ I say. โ€œItโ€™s not that big of a deal.โ€ โ€œIs that why youโ€™re upset?โ€

โ€œWhat? Iโ€™m not upset.โ€ โ€œYouโ€™re not upset?โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ I say. โ€œIโ€™m fine.โ€

When I get home, I donโ€™t call Finny. I want to, but I donโ€™t. At my desk, I write a couple of sentences, delete them, and close my laptop. I try to nap but Iโ€™m not tired. I close my eyes anyway. The sun bleeds through and all I can see is red. Iโ€™ll wait for Finny to call me first. The afternoon passes.
