Chapter no 66

If He Had Been with Me

When I come downstairs, Mom is at the table drinking coffee and reading the paper. She raises her eyebrows at me but doesnโ€™t comment. I have makeup on today, and my hair is clean and dry. I picked up a tiara and almost set it on my head, but then sat it back down.

I go to the refrigerator and pour myself a glass of apple juice. โ€œThank you,โ€ I say to her while my back is still turned.

โ€œFor what?โ€

โ€œNot saying anything.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re welcome.โ€ I sit down across from her and pick up the cartoons. โ€œWhat are you doing today?โ€ she asks. She takes another sip and does not look away from the paper.

โ€œFinny and I are going to breakfast.โ€ Mom looks up and smiles. โ€œTry not to look so thrilled,โ€ I say.

โ€œSorry,โ€ she says. She looks down at the newspaper again.

Finny sent me a text an hour ago, asking me what time I wanted to leave. It woke me up. I thought for a horrible moment that it would be Jamie, and then I remembered everything. If my plans had been with anyone else but Finny, I wouldnโ€™t have been able to drag myself out of bed.

I hear his knock on the back door and I look up. He opens the door himself and comes into the kitchen.

โ€œHi,โ€ he says.

โ€œGood morning, Finny,โ€ Mom says.

โ€œJust a sec,โ€ I say. I gulp down the rest of my juice and stand. โ€œWhat time will you be home?โ€ Mom asks.

โ€œI dunno,โ€ I say. โ€œItโ€™s just breakfast.โ€ โ€œCall if youโ€™ll be later than midnight.โ€ โ€œYouโ€™re hilarious, Mom.โ€

Finny opens the door for me and we go outside. โ€œMine was ecstatic too,โ€ he says.

He doesnโ€™t laugh at me for ordering a hamburger and fries for breakfast. The waitress doesnโ€™t frown either, and I file it away as further evidence that Iโ€™m not the only one. Finny orders bacon, eggs, and hash browns, just like youโ€™re supposed to.

โ€œHas your mom told you yet that we donโ€™t have curfews anymore?โ€ Finny says after the waitress takes our menus.

โ€œNo. Are you sure itโ€™s both of us?โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s what she said. And she said the same thing about calling later than midnight.โ€

โ€œHuh.โ€

Finnyโ€™s phone rings. He pulls it out of his pocket, looks at it, and frowns. โ€œSorry,โ€ he says to me, and then into the phone, โ€œHey.โ€ I take a crayon from the jar on the table and start to draw on the paper tablecloth. โ€œAre you still jet-lagged?โ€ he says. I draw a flower and then a heart. I scratch out the heart. โ€œYeah, Iโ€™m about to eat breakfast. Really? Thatโ€™s cool.โ€ He listens for a long time then. I draw a house with a sun in the sky, and two stick figures in the yard playing with a red ball. I pause and make them a blond girl and a brunette boy. I give them a dog. I always wanted a dog. โ€œUh-huh. I do. I miss you too.โ€ My eyes are glued to the table. I will not look up. The waitress comes with our food and covers up my drawing. While Finny listens to the phone, I pick at my French fries and stir the ketchup in swirls.

โ€œOkay. Have fun. And, Sylvie?โ€ Even though I knew it was her, the name jolts me and I look up at him. He glances at me and looks away. โ€œUh, just be safe, okay? Donโ€™t do anythingโ€”you know.โ€ He pauses and listens.

โ€œI know. I know. Love you too. Bye.โ€ He puts his phone back in his pocket. I look down at my food again. โ€œSorry,โ€ he says.

โ€œItโ€™s fine,โ€ I say.

โ€œWith the time difference and all the running around sheโ€™s doing, she canโ€™t call that often. I couldnโ€™t tell her to call back.โ€

โ€œNo, really, itโ€™s fine. How is she?โ€ โ€œSheโ€™s fine. Really excited.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s nice,โ€ I say. I finally pick up my hamburger and take a bite.

โ€œSoโ€ฆAngie had her baby yet?โ€ I chew slowly and watch him cut up his eggs.

โ€œNo,โ€ I say. โ€œI havenโ€™t actually talked to her since graduation though. I know I should call her, butโ€”โ€ I shrug and take another bite.

โ€œI bet she understands,โ€ he says. We eat in silence for a few minutes. Finny eats all his eggs, then all his hash browns, and when there is nothing else left, he starts on the bacon.

โ€œJamie said he hoped we could all be friends,โ€ I say. Finny looks up at me.

โ€œFriends with him and Sasha?โ€ he says. โ€œYeah,โ€ I say.

Finny shakes his head. โ€œHeโ€™s crazy,โ€ he says.

โ€œIs it bad that I want everyone else to take my side against them?โ€ I ask. โ€œNo,โ€ Finny says, โ€œbut you shouldnโ€™t expect them to either. It may not

happen.โ€

โ€œI know,โ€ I say. Finny breaks his bacon in half and offers me a piece. I shake my head.

โ€œIโ€™m on your side,โ€ he says. He wipes his hands on his napkin. โ€œYou donโ€™t count,โ€ I say.

โ€œThanks.โ€

โ€œYou know what I mean.โ€ โ€œI know.โ€

He drives with the windows rolled down again, this time because I ask him to. Itโ€™s nearly noon now, and the rest of the day is stretching out blankly. I sigh and look out the window.

โ€œAre you going to go back to lying in bed today?โ€ Finny says. I shrug as he pulls into the driveway. โ€œWell, what are you gonna to do?โ€

โ€œI dunno,โ€ I say. He parks the car and doesnโ€™t say anything else. I run my fingers through my hair again and again and stare straight ahead. I feel the lump coming up in my throat and I try to push it down again.

โ€œHey, Finny?โ€ I whisper. โ€œWhat?โ€ he says.

โ€œIโ€™m scared that Iโ€™m going to call him.โ€

โ€œWhy?โ€ he says. Form the corner of my eye, I see him turn and look at me.

โ€œJust to yell at him.โ€

He shakes his head. โ€œThatโ€™s not a good idea.โ€

โ€œI know. But Iโ€™m used to being able to call him. Iโ€™m used to telling him that Iโ€™m angry or sad or whatever.โ€ I swallow and take a breath. โ€œItโ€™s like I need him to help me get over him.โ€

โ€œYou donโ€™t need him,โ€ Finny says. I donโ€™t say anything. My vision is going blurry, and I am concentrating on not crying in front of him. โ€œAutumn? Hey,โ€ he says.

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œWhy donโ€™t you hang out in my room today? I was just going to play a video game. You can read or whatever. I wonโ€™t let you call him.โ€

โ€œOkay,โ€ I say.

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œOkay,โ€ I say louder.

โ€œAll right. Come on.โ€ He walks around the car and opens the door for me, and I follow him.
