The following week, Iโm late for the library as usual and practically running as I juggle my backpack and a few extra books. Iโve just turned the corner around a big oak tree when I run into Ryker. Weโve seen each other in class this week, but either Connor has been talking to me or Rykerโs been surrounded by other players or jersey chasers. Sure, I could bust through the crowd and talk to him, but my heart knows the truth: weโre avoiding each other since his visit to my house.
We collide and several of my books fall to the ground.
Great. I inwardly groan at my penchant for always looking my worstโin other words, a shirt that saysย Mother of Dragons, orange skinny jeans with holes in them, and a pair of leopard flats. At least I have lipstick and mascara on and my hair is down and tame for once.
โWhoa!โ he says as we stumble back, and he reaches out to steady me. โSlow down.โ
โSorry,โ I murmur as I bend down to pick up the books.
He leans down to help, holding one of them up as he pops an eyebrow at me. โDark Loverย by JR Ward? Now that sounds like a literary gem.โ He turns it over and skims the back.
โIt is.โ
He flips it over and studies the shirtless guy on the front. โIโve got him beat, Red.โ
I take it out of his hands. โThis happens to be a fantastic series. You might even like it. Lots of blood and gore and fangs.โ I smile.
โReally?โ He stands as I do, helping me up as I open my backpack and cram the books inside. He shrugs nonchalantly and looks off in the distance. โI meant to ask youโhow did the pool date go? Wasnโt it supposed to be this week?โ
โItโs been delayed. Weโre going out soon.โ I managed to put Connor off for a while with the excuse that I had to work.
He sticks his hands in his pockets. โSo you didnโt go out with him yet?
Interesting.โ
I shrug, playing it off. โWell, you never showed me how to play pool.โ โOh,โ he says, a thoughtful look on his face. โI can do that. How about
tonight?โ
Excitement curls at the thought of him leaning over me and showing me
how to hit a cue ball.
Butโฆ
I point to myself. โDistraction, remember?โ
He exhales, his gaze intense. โWe havenโt hung out in a while. Or talked.
If you can handle the proximity, I can.โ
I mull it over. I donโt have to work, and Charisma already mentioned she has plans to go to a Tau party tonight.
โThereโs a Tau party, but Iโm not really in the mood to go,โ he adds. โOkay,โ I say, coming to a decision without really thinking it through. He smiles and we begin to walk. โWhere are you headed?โ
โLibrary. I do a study group there when needed.โ โOh?โ
I nod. โUsually for lower level geometry classes.โ โYouโre some kind of genius, arenโt you?โ
I grin. โYour GPA isnโt too shabby either.โ โHow do you know?โ
I roll my eyes. โI did my research, quarterback. Also, youโre in an upper level math class when your major is psychology, so you must like numbers. Am I right?โ
A dimple pops out. โMaybe I took it because I knew it was likely youโd be in there.โ
I laugh as we walk across the quad. โYouโre such a liar.โ
โWell, then I guess it was fate that we both ended up in it. Iโm shocked we never had a class together before. I wonder if we would have been friends sooner.โ He gets a contemplative expression on his face and halts.
I stop with him. โWhat?โ
He shakes his head. โI just realized we might not have met if I hadnโt been part of the scandal last year.โ His eyes find mine. โYou wouldnโt have written your editorial, and Archer never would have bet me I couldnโt get you to go out with me. You never would have dumped water on me.โ He laughs. โCrazy, right, that something good came out of it?โ
Indeed. I nod, my gaze lingering on the curve of his face, the way his hair curls up at the ends.
He flashes a grin. โPlus you opened my eyes about how suckyย Twilightย really isโbut Iโd watch all of them with you if you wanted. Thatโs a true friend.โ
I laugh. โThank youโฆI think?โ
Someone squeals his name, and we both turn to see a skinny, pretty, blonde girl in a miniskirt and a low-cut green shirt. Her giant boobs bounce as she runs toward us and grabs him in a bear hug, throwing her arms around his waist. โRyker!โ
Heโs motionless, standing with his arms at his sides as she coos over him,
brushing her lips over his cheek, her hand squeezing his bicep.
Of course, itโs none other than Sasha, the Theta who hooked up with Margoโs Kyle. I grimace, imagining what it would be like to walk in and see your boyfriend banging this Playboy lookalike. Not pretty.
She bats her eyes up at him. โI havenโt seen you at any of the parties. We need to get together soon.โ She rakes her hand across his shoulders, wiping at a nonexistent piece of lint. โYou looked amazing at last weekโs game, by the way. Remember that time we went to the basement after we beat LSU and I
โโ
โUh, yeah.โ His face is carefully blank, and I suspectโam almost certain
โshe was about to recall some tryst they had.
It says a lot about a girl that she will talk about her sexual exploits in front of another girl. But then Sashaโs not exactly a nun.
My gut says heโs slept with her. My heart tightens.
I haveย noย claim to him at all, as I remind myself. We. Are. Just. Friends.
โSo how are you?โ she says, easing in closer to him.
โIโve been busy with practice,โ he replies, but his eyes are on me.
I swallow and break our gaze, thinking about these confusing feelings I have for him. Because I can say all day long that I just want to be friends, but the truth is Iโm so fucking hot for him that it hurts. I canโt stop writing about him. I canโt stop looking at him. And I want to pull out every blonde hair on Sashaโs head.
What if I fall all the way for him?ย Is this the kind of thing Iโd have to put up with?
How can one girl ever be enough for him? My mom wasnโt enough for my dad.
He looks down at her, a polite smile on his face. โHey, Sasha. Iโm talking to someone. Do you mind?โ
โOh!โ Sasha looks over at me as if just noticing Iโm here. She smiles. โHave we met?โ Her long lashes flutter against her porcelain complexion.
Several times. โYes.โ
She squints. โWait. Youโre a Chi O, right?โ
I nod. โIโm Margoโs stepsister.โ Never in my life have I been proud to own that one. But the thing is, when you screw over a Chi Omega, the girls will line up behind her to get you back.
โOh.โ She laughs, the sound grating on my nerves. โI suppose she doesnโt like me very much.โ She leans in conspiratorially. โJust tell her Kyle was a one-time thing, will ya? No harm, no foul. She can have him back.โ
My eyes narrow, but my voice is sugary sweet and oh so Southern. โSweetie, she doesnโt even know who you are.โ
She cocks her head. โOh. Really? That canโt be right. Iโm sure she knows
โโ
โMmmm, oh yeah, sheโs moved on to bigger and better. But howย niceย for
you to tell me it was just a one-time thing.โ I smile brightly. โTake care now. Use condoms.โ
I hitch my backpack up on my shoulder, give Ryker a smoldering glare, and walk off.
If thatโs the kind of girl he goes forโmy fists clenchโthen what on earth does he see inย me?
Ugh. Why does it even matter? Neither of us is going to act on it. Ryker calls my name, but I donโt stop.
I hear footsteps behind me. Itโs him. โHey, why did you run off like that?
We were in the middle of making plans.โ My jaw tenses.
โRed. Come on. I told her to buzz off.โ
My voice is sharp. โLike that makes it better? How many girls on this campus have you been with?โ
He flushes. โI never claimed to be a saint. Iโm not the same person I was last year.โ
I snort. โI didnโt see you in a rush to get away from her.โ โI was being polite!โ
I halt and look at him. โYou shouldnโt have been!โ
His mouth parts at my vehemence, but I take off walking again and he keeps up with me.
โWhy are you so upset?โ he asks. โAre you jealous?โ โGet over yourself.โ Iโm breathing hard as I walk-jog.
He takes my arm and pulls me to a stop. โYou are. You can go on and on about Connor and how perfect he is, but if a girl stops and says hi to me, you storm off. Why is that?โ He studies me intently. โDonโt you think that means something?โ
We stare at each other for several seconds. My chest is rising and so is his, and I almost feel that if I took one tiny step toward him he would wrap me in his arms and kiss me so fucking hard.
โRed. Say something.โ
No. Heโs the one who left my house; heโs the one who said he didnโt want to hurtย me.
โWhat are you thinking, Penelope?โ His voice is layered with emotion. Itโs as if he needs me to tell him something, to pour my heart out to him. But I canโt. I wonโt.
I inhale a sharp breath. โThis distraction needs to get to the library.โ
I pull my arm away and take off in a full-on run. I probably look ridiculous running in flats and juggling a backpack, but it is what it is.
My eyes close briefly as I hurry toward the library. God help me. I canโt fall for him.
I just canโt.
