Chapter no 68

House of Sky and Breath (Crescent City, #2)

โ€œWe leave for the crystal palace tomorrow,โ€ Ruhn snarled at Hunt in the great room of Bryceโ€™s apartment. โ€œAt dawn.โ€

โ€œLet me get this straight,โ€ the angel said with maddening calm. โ€œYouโ€™ve been meeting mind-to-mind with Agent Daybrightโ€”and dating her?โ€

Bryce sat at the dining table as she nursed a cup of coffeeโ€”which she needed desperately, since Ruhn had burst in at four in the morning. โ€œBanging her, apparently.โ€

Ruhn growled at his sister. โ€œDoes it matter?โ€

โ€œIt does,โ€ Hunt said, โ€œbecause youโ€™re suggesting that we break into the crystal palace not only to get into the archives, but to save your lady love. That adds a shit-ton of risk.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll get her myself,โ€ Ruhn shot back. โ€œI just need to get in with you two first.โ€

โ€œAbsolutely not,โ€ Bryce countered. โ€œI get that you want to play rescuing hero, but what youโ€™re talking about is suicide.โ€

โ€œWould you hesitate to go in after Athalar?โ€ He pointed to the angel. โ€œOr you to go after Bryce?โ€

โ€œYouโ€™ve known her for a month,โ€ Bryce protested.

โ€œYou knew Athalar for barely more than that before you offered to sell yourself into slavery for him.โ€ Ruhn snapped before they could speak, โ€œI donโ€™t need to justify my feelings or my plans to you. I came here to tell you that Iโ€™m going with you. Once weโ€™re inside the palace, weโ€™ll go our separate ways.โ€

โ€œSee, thatโ€™s the part that bugs me,โ€ Bryce said, draining her coffee. โ€œThis whole โ€˜separate waysโ€™ thing. We all go in, we all go out.โ€

Ruhn blinked, but Bryce said to the angel, โ€œHonestly, you should stay here.โ€

โ€œExcuse me?โ€ Hunt demanded.

Ruhn kept silent as Bryce said, โ€œThe more of us go in, the better the chance of getting noticed. Ruhn and I can manage.โ€

โ€œOne, no. Two, fuck no. Three โ€ฆโ€ Hunt grinned wickedly. โ€œWhoโ€™s going to level you up, sweetheart?โ€ She scowled, but Hunt plowed on, โ€œIโ€™m going with you.โ€

She crossed her arms. โ€œItโ€™d be safer with two people.โ€

โ€œItโ€™d be safer not to go at all, but here we are, going,โ€ Hunt said. Ruhn wasnโ€™t entirely sure what to do with himself as the angel crossed the room and knelt before Bryce, grabbing her hands. โ€œI want a future with you.ย Thatโ€™sย why Iโ€™m going. Iโ€™m going to fight for that future.โ€ His sisterโ€™s eyes softened. Hunt kissed her hands. โ€œAnd to do so, we canโ€™t play by other peopleโ€™s rules.โ€

Bryce nodded, and faced Ruhn. โ€œWeโ€™re done playing by Ophionโ€™s rules, or the Asteriโ€™s rules, or anyone elseโ€™s. Weโ€™ll fight our own way.โ€

Ruhn smirked. โ€œTeam Fuck-You.โ€ Bryce grinned.

Hunt said, โ€œAll right, Team Fuck-You.โ€ He stood and patted a hand-drawn map of the crystal palace on the dining table. โ€œFury dropped this off earlier, and now weโ€™re all wide awake, so time to get studying. We need to create a distraction to make the Asteri look elsewhere, and we need to know where weโ€™re going once weโ€™re in there.โ€

Ruhn tried not to marvel at the commander mode Athalar had slipped into. โ€œIt has to be something big,โ€ he said, โ€œif itโ€™ll buy us enough time to get into the archives and find Day.โ€

โ€œSheโ€™s probably in the dungeons,โ€ Hunt said. He added, as if reading Ruhnโ€™s worry, โ€œSheโ€™s alive, Iโ€™m sure of it. The Hind will be dispatched to work on herโ€”theyโ€™re not going to kill her right away. Not when sheโ€™s got so much valuable information.โ€

Ruhnโ€™s stomach churned. He couldnโ€™t get the sound of Dayโ€™s panicked voice out of his mind. His very blood roared to go to her, find her.

Bryce said a shade gently, โ€œWeโ€™ll get her out, Ruhn.โ€

โ€œThat doesnโ€™t give us much time to plan something big, though,โ€ Hunt said, sliding into the seat beside Bryce.

Ruhn scratched his jaw. They didnโ€™t have time to wait weeks. Even hours might be lethal. Minutes. โ€œDay said that Pippa is lying lowโ€”but she has to have something planned. Ophion has taken enough hits to its numbers and bases lately that theyโ€™ll likely let her do whatever she wants, either as some final-stand effort or to rally old and new recruits. Maybe we can prompt Pippa to do whatever sheโ€™s planning a little earlier.โ€

Bryce drummed her fingers on the table. โ€œCall Cormac.โ€

Bryce was fully awake when Cormac arrived thirty minutes later, Tharion in tow. Sheโ€™d called him, too. Heโ€™d started them on this bullshitโ€”he could damn well help finish it.

Yet Tharion โ€ฆ something was off about his scent. His eyes. He said nothing when Bryce asked, so she dropped it. But he seemed different. She couldnโ€™t place it, but he was different.

Cormac said when Ruhn had filled them in, โ€œI have it on good authority as of last night that Pippa is planning a raid in a few weeks on the Pangeran lab where the Asteriโ€™s engineers and scientists workโ€”where they made that new mech prototype. She wants their plans for it, and the scientists themselves.โ€

โ€œTo build the new mech-suits?โ€ Tharion asked. Cormac nodded.

โ€œAnd you were going to tell us this when?โ€ Ruhn challenged.

Cormacโ€™s eyes blazed. โ€œI heard at midnight. I figured it could wait until morning. Besides, you lot havenโ€™t bothered to loop me in on anything since the ball, have you?โ€ He directed this last bit at Bryce.

She smiled sweetly. โ€œI thought you were licking your wounds.โ€

Cormac seethed, โ€œIโ€™ve been dealing with my father, finding a way to convince him to let me remain here after theย humiliationย of my engagement being called off.โ€

Tharion let out a whistle at that. Bryce asked, โ€œAnd did you?โ€

โ€œI wouldnโ€™t be here if I hadnโ€™t,โ€ Cormac hurled back. โ€œHe thinks Iโ€™m currently trying to woo you from Athalar.โ€

Hunt snorted at this, earning a glare from Cormac. Bryce cut in before it could escalate to blows, โ€œSo how do we convince Pippa to make her move now? Weโ€™re not exactly on good terms with her.โ€

Tharion said, โ€œWhat if sheโ€™s not the one initiating the raid?โ€ Bryce angled her head. โ€œYou mean โ€ฆย us?โ€

โ€œI mean me and Cormac and whoever else we can trust.ย Weย carry out the raid, and Pippa and her cronies come running before we can steal the plans and suits they want.โ€

โ€œAnd where does that get us?โ€ Hunt asked.

โ€œIt gets us in a lab with Pippa and Ophionโ€”and if we time it right, a pack of dreadwolves will arrive right after they do.โ€

โ€œSolas,โ€ Bryce said, scrubbing at her face. โ€œHow are you going to get out of that?โ€

Cormac smiled at Tharion, as if sensing the direction of his thoughts. โ€œThatโ€™s the big distraction. We blow it all to Hel.โ€

Ruhn blew out a breath. โ€œThatโ€™ll certainly get the Asteriโ€™s attention.โ€

โ€œThe labโ€™s twenty miles north of the Eternal City,โ€ Cormac said. โ€œIt might even draw them out to inspect the site. Especially if Pippa Spetsos has been captured.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re cool with handing over a fellow rebel?โ€ Hunt asked the prince. โ€œI donโ€™t see any other options.โ€

โ€œKeep the casualties to a minimum,โ€ Hunt said to Cormac, to Tharion. โ€œWe donโ€™t need their blood on our hands.โ€

Bryce massaged her chest. They were really doing this. She got to her feet, and they all looked at her as she said, โ€œIโ€™ll be right back,โ€ and padded into her bedroom.

She shut the door and strode to a photo on her dresser, staring at it for several long minutes. The door opened behind her, and Hunt was there. โ€œYou all right?โ€

Bryce kept staring at the photo. โ€œWe were really happy that night,โ€ she said, and Hunt approached to study the photo of her, Danika, Juniper, and Fury, all grinning in the White Raven nightclub, drunk and high and gorgeous. โ€œI thought we were really happy, at least. But when that photo was taken, Fury was still โ€ฆ doing what she does, Juniper was quietly in love with her, and Danika โ€ฆ Danika had aย mate, had all these secrets. And

I was stupid and drunk and convinced weโ€™d party until we were dust. And now Iโ€™m here.โ€

Her throat ached. โ€œI feel like I have no idea who I am. I know thatโ€™s so fucking clichรฉ, but โ€ฆ Iย thoughtย I knew who I was then. And now โ€ฆโ€ She lifted her hands, letting them fill with starlight. โ€œWhatโ€™s the end goal in this? Somehow, someway, overthrowing theย Asteri? What then? Rebuilding a government, an entire world? What if it triggers another war?โ€

Hunt tugged her into his arms and rested his chin atop her head. โ€œDonโ€™t worry about that shit. We focus on the now, then deal with everything else afterward.โ€

โ€œI thought a general always planned ahead.โ€

โ€œI do. I am. But the first step in making those plans is finding out what the fuck Sofie knew. If itโ€™s nothing, then we reassess. But โ€ฆ I know how it feels to wake up one day and wonder how you got so far from that carefree person you were. I mean, yeah, my life in the slums with my mom wasnโ€™t easy, but after she died โ€ฆ It was like Iโ€™d had some illusion ripped away from me. Itโ€™s how I wound up with Shahar. I was reeling and angry, and โ€ฆ it took me a long, long while to sort myself out. Iโ€™m still sorting it out.โ€

She leaned her brow against his chest. โ€œCan I admit that Iโ€™m scared shitless?โ€

โ€œCan I admit that I am, too?โ€

She laughed, squeezing him tight around the middle, breathing in his scent. โ€œIโ€™d be slightly less scared if you were staying here, and I could go in knowing youโ€™re safe.โ€

โ€œLikewise.โ€

She pinched his ass. โ€œThen I guess weโ€™re stuck with each other, venturing into the lionโ€™s den.โ€

โ€œMore like a sobek nest.โ€ โ€œGreat. Really reassuring.โ€

He chuckled, the sound rumbling into her bones, warming them. โ€œRuhn talked to Declan. Heโ€™s going to hack into the security cameras at the palace

โ€”turn away the cameras while weโ€™re in there. We need to give him our route through the building so he can turn them without being noticed by anyone monitoring the system. Flynn will run support for him.โ€

โ€œWhat if we wind up needing to take a different hall?โ€

โ€œHeโ€™ll have backup plans, but โ€ฆ weโ€™ll really need to try to stick to ours.โ€

Nausea roiled her gut, but she said, โ€œOkay.โ€

Hunt kissed her cheek. โ€œTake your time, Quinlan. Iโ€™ll be with the others.โ€ Then he was gone.

Bryce stared at the photo again. She pulled out her phone from her bathrobe and dialed. Unsurprisingly, Juniperโ€™s phone went to audiomail. It was five thirty in the morning, butโ€”she knew Juniper would have picked up before.

โ€œHey, this is Juniper Andromeda. Leave a message!โ€

Bryceโ€™s throat closed up at her friendโ€™s lovely, cheerful voice. She took a breath as the audiomail beeped. โ€œHey, June. Itโ€™s me. Look, I know I fucked up, and โ€ฆ Iโ€™m so sorry. I wanted to help, but I didnโ€™t think it through, and everything you said to me was absolutely right. I know you might not even listen to this, but I wanted you to know that I love you. I miss you so much. Youโ€™ve been a rock for me for so long, and I should have been that for you, but I wasnโ€™t. I just โ€ฆ I love you. I always have, and always will. Bye.โ€

She rubbed at her aching throat as she finished. Then removed the photo from the frame, folded it, and slipped it inside her phone case.
