Chapter no 55

House of Sky and Breath (Crescent City, #2)

Bryce didnโ€™t have time to scream. Didnโ€™t have time to do anything but fall back on her ass, scrambling away from Ithan, his blood spraying, gurgling as his throatโ€”

The beastโ€”theย demonโ€”ripped out Ithanโ€™s throat.

Tipped back its broad, flat head and swallowed the chunk of flesh between black, curved fangs.

โ€œGet up,โ€ Hypaxia ordered from where she stood above Bryce, a knife in her hand. Where itโ€™d come from, Bryce had no idea.

Ithanโ€”

She couldnโ€™t do this again. Couldnโ€™t endure it.

The demon stepped away from Ithanโ€™s twitching, dying body. Would he survive that kind of a blow? If the demon had poison on its fangs like the kristallosโ€”

This thing might have been some relative. Its matte gray scales flowed over a muscular, low-slung body; a tail as long as Bryce whipped back and forth, its spiked end carving grooves in the stone. People along the quay, the streets beyond, started fleeing.

Her body couldnโ€™t move. Shockโ€”she knew this was shock, and yetโ€”

Help would come soon. Someone, either in the Aux or the 33rd, would arrive. Huntโ€”

โ€œGet up,โ€ Hypaxia said, gripping Bryce under a shoulder to haul her to her feet. Slowly, the witch-queen dragged Bryce backโ€”

A snarl reverberated through the stones behind them.

Bryce twisted to find a second demon, twin to the one that had ripped out Ithanโ€™s throat, approaching at their rear. The two of them were closing in on the prey now trapped between them.

Fear, cold and sharp, sliced through her. Shattered the shock rooting her into uselessness. Clarified her fogged, bloody vision.

โ€œBack-to-back,โ€ Hypaxia ordered, voice low and calm. One knifeโ€” thatโ€™s all they had. Why the fuck didnโ€™t she carry a gun?

But Ithan had a gun. On his lifeless body, Bryce could make out the gun he hadnโ€™t had a chance to draw. How many rounds did it hold? If the demon was fast enough to sneak up on him, though, she didnโ€™t stand a chance. Not unless โ€ฆ

โ€œWhat kind of magic do you have?โ€ Bryce murmured, pressing her back to Hypaxia as she eyed the second demon. Sheโ€™d kill these fuckers. Rip them apart piece by piece for this.

โ€œDoes it matter?โ€ Hypaxia asked, angling her knife at the first demon. โ€œIs it energy? Like lightning?โ€

โ€œHealing and windโ€”and the necromancy, which I canโ€™t even begin to explain.โ€

โ€œCan you pinpoint it? Shoot it into me?โ€ โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œI need a charge. Like a battery,โ€ Bryce said, the scar on her chest glowing faintly.

The demon before her bayed to the night sky. Her ears rang. โ€œTo do what?โ€

โ€œJustโ€”do it now, or we are going to be royally fucked.โ€

The first demon howled. Like so many beings from the Pit, their eyes were milkyโ€”blind. As if theyโ€™d been in the dark so long theyโ€™d ceased to need them. So blinding wasnโ€™t an option. But a bullet โ€ฆ โ€œYou think a knife is going to work on them?โ€ Bryce demanded.

โ€œI โ€ฆโ€ Hypaxia guided them toward the quay railing. Three feet remained until there was nowhere to go but the water. Bryce shuddered, remembering the sobeks that had attacked them that day fleeing the Bone Quarter.

โ€œUse your healing power and hit my fucking chest,โ€ Bryce snarled. โ€œTrust me.โ€ They had no other choice. If Huntโ€™s power had charged her up, maybe โ€ฆ

The creature nearest the witch-queen lunged, snapping. The two females slammed into the railing.

โ€œNow!โ€ Bryce shouted, and Hypaxia whirled, shoving a shining palm to Bryceโ€™s chest. Warmth flowed into her, soft and gentle, andโ€”

Stars erupted in Bryceโ€™s mind. Supernovas.

Ithan.

It was as easy as taking a step.

One breath, Bryce stood against the quay. The next, she was beside Ithanโ€™s body, behind the creatures, who pivoted toward her, sensing that her scent had shifted away.

Hypaxia tapped the golden brooch on the lapel of her jacket. With aย woomphย of air, her broom appeared before her, and the queen leapt onto it, shooting skywardโ€”

Bryce grabbed the gun from Ithanโ€™s waistband, clicked off the safety, and fired at the closest demon. Brain matter splattered as the bullet plowed between its sightless eyes.

The second demon charged at her, Hypaxia forgotten as she hovered on her broom in the air above. Bryce fired, and the beast dodged the blowโ€”as if it could feel the air itself parting for the bullet. It was onto her, aware of what weapon she boreโ€”

The demon leapt for her, and Bryce rallied her power.

Stepped from her place beside Ithanโ€™s body to the open walkway behind the charging creature.

It hit the ground and spun, claws gouging deep. Bryce fired again, and the demon used those preternatural senses to veer left at the last millisecond, taking the bullet in the shoulder. The shot did nothing to slow it.

The demon jumped for her again, and Bryce moved. Slower this timeโ€” Hypaxiaโ€™s power was already funneling out of her.

โ€œThirty feet behind you!โ€ Hypaxia ordered from above, pointing, and Bryce gritted her teeth, mapping out how to get there. The dance she had to lead the creature into.

It leapt, claws out, and Bryce teleported back ten feet. It leapt again and she moved, body shaking against the strain. Another ten feet back. She could make the last jump. Had to make the last jump as the demon sprangโ€”

Roaring, Bryce flung all of herself, all that remained of the spark of Hypaxiaโ€™s power, into her desire to step, to moveโ€”

She appeared ten feet back, and the creature, sensing her pattern, jumped.

It didnโ€™t look up. Didnโ€™t see the witch-queen plunging to the earth, dagger aloft.

Bryce hit the ground as Hypaxia jumped from her broom and landed atop the beast, slamming her blade into its skull. Witch and demon went down, the former astride it like a horse from Hel. But the demon didnโ€™t so much as twitch.

Scraped palms and knees already healing, Bryce panted, shaking. Sheโ€™d done it. Sheโ€™dโ€”

Ithan. Oh gods, Ithan.

On wobbling legs, she scrambled to her feet and rushed for him. His throat was healingโ€”slowly. He stared unseeingly at the night sky.

โ€œMove back,โ€ Hypaxia said, breathing heavily, broom discarded beside her. โ€œLet me see him.โ€

โ€œHe needs a medwitch!โ€

โ€œI am a medwitch,โ€ Hypaxia said, and knelt.

Wings filled the skies, sirens blaring from the streets. Then Isaiah was there, hands on Bryceโ€™s shoulders. โ€œAre you all right? Is that Holstrom? Whereโ€™s Athalar?โ€ The rapid-fire questions pelted her.

โ€œIโ€™m here,โ€ Hunt said from the darkness, landing with enough force that the ground shook. Lightning skittered over the concrete. He assessed Bryce, then Ithan, the wolfโ€™s body glowing under Hypaxiaโ€™s hands. Then he registered the two demons and went pale. โ€œThose โ€ฆโ€ He scanned Bryce again.

โ€œYou know what they are?โ€ Isaiah asked.

Hunt rushed to Bryce and tucked her into him. She leaned into his warmth, his strength. He said quietly, โ€œDeathstalkers. Personal pets of the Prince of the Pit. They were seen in Nena four days ago. They somehow crossed the border.โ€

Bryceโ€™s stomach hollowed out.

Isaiah held up a hand to keep the other advancing angels and Aux at bay. โ€œYou think these two came here all the way from Nena? And why attack Bryce?โ€

Bryce wrapped her arms around Huntโ€™s waist, not caring that she was clinging. If she let go, her knees might very well give out. Hunt lied smoothly, โ€œIsnโ€™t it obvious? Helโ€™s got a score to settle with her after this spring. They sent their best assassins to kill her.โ€

Isaiah seemed to buy that theory, because he said to Bryce, โ€œHow did you even bring them down?โ€

โ€œIthan had a gun. I got a lucky shot on the first. Queen Hypaxia took care of the second.โ€

It was mostly true.

โ€œThere,โ€ Hypaxia announced, stepping back from Ithanโ€™s healed, limp body. โ€œHeโ€™ll wake when heโ€™s ready.โ€ She gathered her broom and, with a touchโ€”or some of her witch-powerโ€”it shrank back into the golden brooch of Cthona. She pinned it onto her gray jacket as she pivoted to Isaiah. โ€œCan your soldiers transport him to the witchesโ€™ embassy? Iโ€™d like to tend to him personally until heโ€™s conscious.โ€

Bryce couldnโ€™t argue with that. But โ€ฆ there was no one to call for Ithan. No family, no friends, no pack. No one exceptโ€”

She dialed Ruhn.

Deathstalkers. He should have sent out a warning the moment heโ€™d IDed the tail of one in that photo from Nena. Should have had every soldier in this city on alert.

But Bryce โ€ฆ by some miracle, she didnโ€™t have a scratch on her.

It wasnโ€™t possible. Hunt knew how fast the deathstalkers were. Even Fae couldnโ€™t outrun them. Theyโ€™d been bred that way by Apollion himself.

Hunt waited to speak until he and Bryce stood in the golden hall of the witchesโ€™ embassy. Ithan had already been handed over from the two angels whoโ€™d flown him here to Ruhn and Declan, whoโ€™d gently carried the wolf into a small room to recover. โ€œSo, letโ€™s hear the real story.โ€

Bryce turned to him, eyes bright with fearโ€”and excitement. โ€œI did it.

Teleported.โ€ She explained what Hypaxia had doneโ€”what she had done.

โ€œThat was one Hel of a risk.โ€ He wasnโ€™t sure whether to kiss her or shake her for it.

โ€œMy options were limited,โ€ Bryce said, crossing her arms. Through the open doorway, Ruhn and Dec set Ithan on the cot, Hypaxia instructing them

to position his body in a certain way. โ€œWhere the Hel was the dragon?โ€

โ€œFucking coward told Holstrom sheโ€™d climb up to the rooftops to provide a second set of eyes, and then bailed,โ€ Flynn said, face dark as he stepped into the hall.

โ€œDo you blame her?โ€ Bryce said.

โ€œYeah.โ€ Flynn glowered. โ€œWe did her a favor, and she fucked us over. She could have torched those demons.โ€ Before Bryce could counter, the lord stalked away with a disgusted shake of his head.

Bryce waited until the hall was empty again before asking Hunt, โ€œYou think these were the appetizers the Prince of the Pit threatened to send to test us?โ€

โ€œYes. They answer only to him.โ€

โ€œBut they were about to kill me. He didnโ€™t seem to want us dead. And it seems reckless to do it just to test me.โ€ She gestured between them. โ€œHis epic opponents, remember?โ€

Ruhn stepped into the hall and murmured, โ€œUnless you werenโ€™t the one they were supposed to kill.โ€ He jerked his chin toward Hypaxia, lowering his voice. He assessed the quiet halls of the embassyโ€”no witches in sightโ€” before saying, โ€œMaybe her coven summoned them, somehow.โ€

Bryce frowned. โ€œWhy?โ€

Ruhn paced a step. โ€œYouโ€™d be the perfect cover story. She was walking beside someone Hel has a score to settle withโ€”someone whoโ€™d pissed Hel off this spring. Deathstalkers imply the Prince of the Pitโ€™s involvement. If sheโ€™d died, all eyes would be on Hel. Everyone would think theyโ€™d targeted you, and sheโ€™d be the unfortunate additional loss.โ€

โ€œWhat about Ithan, though?โ€

Hunt picked up Ruhnโ€™s thread. โ€œAlso collateral. After this spring, I doubt Sabine would be stupid enough to summon a demon. That leaves our enemies or Hypaxiaโ€™s. But given what Apollion threatened โ€ฆ Iโ€™d say odds are it was him. Maybe he was willing to take the risk that youโ€™d die during his little testโ€”maybe he supposed that if you died, you wouldnโ€™t be worthy of battling him anyway.โ€

Bryce rubbed her face. โ€œSo where does that leave us?โ€

Hunt interlaced their fingers. โ€œIt leaves us with the realization that this city needs to be on high alert and you need to be armed at all times.โ€

She glared. โ€œThatโ€™s not helpful.โ€

Ruhn, wisely, kept his mouth shut.

โ€œYou didnโ€™t have any weapons tonight,โ€ Hunt snarled. โ€œYou two hadย one knifeย between you. You were lucky Ithan carried that gun. And you were even luckier in your guess that Hypaxia could charge up your ability to teleport.โ€

Ruhn grunted his agreement.

โ€œSo thatโ€™s how you did it,โ€ Declan said, walking back into the hall. The warrior shut the door behind him, giving Hypaxia and Ithan privacy.

Bryce sketched a bow. โ€œItโ€™ll be my special solo act during the school talent show.โ€

Declan snorted, but Ruhn was assessing her. โ€œYou really teleported?โ€

Bryce explained everything again, and Hunt couldnโ€™t keep himself from tugging her closer. When she finished, Ruhn echoed Huntโ€™s words. โ€œWe got lucky tonight.ย Youย got lucky tonight.โ€

Bryce winked at Hunt. โ€œAnd I plan to get lucky again.โ€ โ€œGross,โ€ Ruhn said as Declan snickered.

Hunt flicked Bryceโ€™s nose and said to Ruhn, โ€œLetโ€™s set up watches around the apartment and this embassyโ€”assign your most trusted soldiers. Iโ€™ll get Isaiah and Naomi on it, too.โ€

โ€œThe 33rd and the Aux teaming up to guard little old me?โ€ Bryce crooned. โ€œIโ€™m flattered.โ€

โ€œThis is not the time to debate alphahole politics,โ€ Hunt ground out. โ€œThose were fucking deathstalkers.โ€

โ€œAnd I dealt with them.โ€

โ€œI wouldnโ€™t be so dismissive,โ€ he growled. โ€œThe Prince of the Pit will send hordes of them through the Northern Rift if he ever gets it fully open, rather than shoving one or two through at a time for fun. They hunt down whoever theyโ€™re ordered to stalk. Theyโ€™re assassins. You get marked by them for execution, and you areย dead.โ€

She blew on her fingers, as if chasing off dust. โ€œAll in a dayโ€™s work for me, then.โ€

โ€œQuinlanโ€”โ€

Ruhn started laughing.

โ€œWhat?โ€ Hunt demanded.

Ruhn said, โ€œYou know who I was talking to before I got your call? My father.โ€ Bryce went still, and Hunt knew it was bad. Ruhn grinned at him.

โ€œYourย father in-law.โ€ โ€œExcuse me?โ€

Ruhn didnโ€™t stop grinning. โ€œHe told me the wonderful news.โ€ He winked at Bryce. โ€œYou must be so happy.โ€

Bryce groaned and turned to Hunt. โ€œItโ€™s not officialโ€”โ€

โ€œOh, itโ€™s official,โ€ Ruhn said, leaning against the wall beside the door. โ€œWhat the fuck are you two talking about?โ€ Hunt growled.

Ruhn smirked at Hunt. โ€œSheโ€™s been bandying about the royal name, apparently. Which means sheโ€™s accepted her position as princess. And as youโ€™re her mate, that makes you son-in-law to the Autumn King. And my brother.โ€

Hunt gaped at him. Ruhn was completely serious.

Bryce blurted, โ€œDid you ask him about Cormac? The Autumn King insists the engagement is still on.โ€

Ruhnโ€™s amusement faded. โ€œI donโ€™t see how it could be.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m sorry,โ€ Hunt cut in, โ€œbut what the fuck?โ€ His wings splayed. โ€œYouโ€™re now officially aย princess?โ€

Bryce winced. โ€œSurprise?โ€
