Chapter no 42

House of Sky and Breath (Crescent City, #2)

Bryce was just walking down the shining hallway to Celestinaโ€™s office when her phone rang.

Juniper. Bryce sent her to audiomail. A message came through instead.

Call back now.

Dread burning like acid through her, Bryce dialed, praying nothing had happened with Furyโ€”

Juniper answered on the first ring. โ€œHowย dareย you?โ€ Bryce halted. โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œHowย dareย you call Gorgyn?โ€

โ€œI โ€ฆโ€ Bryce swallowed. โ€œWhat happened?โ€ โ€œIโ€™m principal, thatโ€™s what happened!โ€

โ€œAnd thatโ€™s a bad thing?โ€ She was due to meet with Celestina in one minute. She couldnโ€™t be late.

โ€œItโ€™s a bad thing becauseย everyoneย knows thatย Princess Bryce Danaanย put in a call and threatened to pull the Autumn Kingโ€™s donations if CCB didnโ€™tย recognize my talent!โ€

โ€œSo what?โ€ Bryce hissed. โ€œIsnโ€™t this the only bit of good that being a princess entails?โ€

โ€œNo! Itโ€™s theย opposite!โ€ Juniper was absolutely screaming with rage. Bryce started shaking. โ€œI have worked my entire life for this, Bryce! Myย entire life! And you step in and take that accomplishment away from me! Make yourselfโ€”not me, not my talentโ€”into the reason I got this promotion, the reason I made history!ย You, not me. Not me sticking it out,

fighting through it, but my Fae Princess friend, who couldnโ€™t leave well enough alone!โ€

The clock chimed in the hallway. Bryce had to go. Had to talk to the Archangel.

โ€œLook, Iโ€™m about to go into a meeting,โ€ she said as evenly as she could, though she thought she might puke. โ€œBut Iโ€™ll call you back right after, I promise. Iโ€™m so sorry ifโ€”โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t bother,โ€ June snapped. โ€œJuniperโ€”โ€

The faun hung up.

Bryce focused on her breathing. She needed one of Kyrahโ€™s dance classes. Immediately. Needed to sweat and breathe and majorly unload and analyze the tornado wreaking havoc inside her. But this meeting โ€ฆ She squared her shoulders, putting away the fight, the fact that sheโ€™d fucked everything up, had been so arrogant and stupid andโ€”

She knocked on the door to Celestinaโ€™s office. โ€œEnter,โ€ came the sweet female voice.

Bryce smiled at the Governor as if she hadnโ€™t destroyed a friendship moments ago. โ€œYour Grace,โ€ Bryce said, inclining her head.

โ€œYour Highness,โ€ Celestina answered, and Bryce reined in a wince. It was how sheโ€™d gotten this meeting, too. Sheโ€™d asked the Archangel to meet not as Bryce Quinlan, but as a Princess of the Fae. It was an invitation even an Archangel had to agree to.

She wondered how itโ€™d come back to haunt her.

โ€œJust for this meeting,โ€ Bryce said, sitting down. โ€œIโ€™ve come to make a formal request.โ€

โ€œFor the return of Hunt Athalar, I take it.โ€ A tired, sad sort of light gleamed in the Governorโ€™s eyes.

โ€œA temporary return,โ€ Bryce said, and leaned back in her chair. โ€œI know he bailed on you at your party. If Iโ€™d been aware he was doing that, I would never have asked him to assist me that night. Soโ€”totally feel free to punish him. You have my blessing.โ€

It was a lie, but Celestinaโ€™s lips twitched upward. โ€œHow long do you want him for?โ€

โ€œA night.โ€ To go to the Coronal Islands and back before Pippa Spetsos and her cabal could get there. To convince whoever Command sentย notย to

give Spetsos free rein to unleash those weapons on Valbara. โ€œWe figured weโ€™d take the arrow train instead of driving the eight hours each way. I promised my mother Iโ€™d bring him home with me. If he doesnโ€™t come, there will be Hel to pay.โ€ Another lie.

But the Governor smiled fully at that. โ€œYour mother is โ€ฆ a fearsome creature?โ€

โ€œOh yeah. And if Huntโ€™s not there, every bad thing she thinks about him will be confirmed.โ€

โ€œShe doesnโ€™t like him?โ€

โ€œShe doesnโ€™t likeย anyย male. No one is good enough for me, according to her. You have no idea how hard dating was when I was younger.โ€

โ€œTry being an Archangel in a small community,โ€ Celestina said, and smiled genuinely.

Bryce grinned. โ€œEveryone was intimidated?โ€ โ€œSome ran screaming.โ€

Bryce laughed, and marveled that she did so. Hated that she had to lie to this warm, kind female.

Celestina hooked a curl behind her ear. โ€œSo a great deal is riding on Athalarโ€™s visit.โ€

โ€œYeah. Itโ€™s not like I need her permission to be with him, but it โ€ฆ Itโ€™d be nice to have her approval.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m sure it would.โ€ Celestinaโ€™s smile turned sad.

Bryce knew it wasnโ€™t her place, but she asked, โ€œHow are you and Ephraim getting along?โ€

A shadow flickered across Celestinaโ€™s face, confirmation that she wasnโ€™t contented. โ€œHeโ€™s a thorough lover.โ€

โ€œBut?โ€

She said deliberately, warning sharpening her voice, โ€œBut he has been my friend for many years. I find that I am now getting to know him in a whole new way.โ€

Celestina deserved so much more than that. Bryce sighed. โ€œI know youโ€™re, like โ€ฆ an Archangel, but if you ever need some girl talk โ€ฆ Iโ€™m here.โ€

The last Governor sheโ€™d spoken to had tried to kill her. And sheโ€™d put a bullet in his head. This was a nice change.

Celestina smiled again, that warmthโ€”and reliefโ€”returning to her features. โ€œIโ€™d like that very much, Your Highness.โ€

โ€œBryce in this instance.โ€

โ€œBryce.โ€ Her eyes twinkled. โ€œTake Athalar home. And keep him there.โ€ Bryceโ€™s brows rose. โ€œPermanently?โ€

โ€œNot at your parentsโ€™ house. I mean take him with you to your family, and then he may live with you once more. Heโ€™s been moping around so much that heโ€™s bringing down morale. Iโ€™ll send him your way tomorrow morning. Let him stew one more night before I tell him at dawn.โ€

Bryce beamed. โ€œThank you. I mean it, thank youย soย much.โ€

But the Governor waved a hand. โ€œYouโ€™re doing me a favor, trust me.โ€

Bryce made a call on her way to her next stop.

Fury answered right before it went to audiomail. โ€œYou fucked up, Bryce.โ€

Bryce cringed. โ€œI know. Iโ€™m really sorry.โ€

โ€œI get why you did it. I really do. But she isย devastated.โ€

Bryce stepped off the elevator and swallowed the lump in her throat. โ€œPlease tell her Iโ€™m so sorry. Iโ€™m so freaking sorry. I was trying to help, and I didnโ€™t think.โ€

โ€œI know,โ€ Fury said. โ€œBut Iโ€™m not getting in the middle of this.โ€ โ€œYouโ€™re her girlfriend.โ€

โ€œExactly. And youโ€™re her friend. And mine. Iโ€™m not playing the messenger. Give her some time, then try to talk it out.โ€

Bryce sagged against a worn wall. โ€œOkay. How long?โ€ โ€œA few weeks.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s ages!โ€

โ€œDevastated. Remember?โ€

Bryce rubbed at her chest, the unlit scar there. โ€œFuck.โ€

โ€œStart thinking of big ways to apologize,โ€ Fury said. Then added, โ€œYou ever figure that thing out with Danika or the kid?โ€

โ€œNot yet. Want to help?โ€ It was as much as sheโ€™d risk saying on the phone.

โ€œNo. Iโ€™m not getting in the middle of that shit, either.โ€ โ€œWhy?โ€

โ€œI have a lot of good things going on right now,โ€ Fury said. โ€œJune is one of them. Iโ€™m not jeopardizing any of it. Or her safety.โ€

โ€œButโ€”โ€

โ€œBig apology. Donโ€™t forget.โ€ Fury hung up.

Bryce swallowed her nausea, her self-disgust and hatred. She walked down the quiet hall to a familiar door, then knocked. She was rewarded by the sight of Hunt opening the door, shirtless and wearing his backward sunball hat. Gleaming with sweat. He must have just returned from the gym.

He jolted. โ€œWhat are youโ€”โ€

She cut him off with a kiss, throwing her arms around his neck.

He laughed, but his hands encircled her waist, lifting her high enough that she wrapped her legs around his middle. He slowed the kiss, his tongue driving deep, exploring her mouth. โ€œHi,โ€ he said against her lips, and kissed her again.

โ€œI wanted to tell you the news,โ€ she said, kissing his jaw, his neck. Heโ€™d already hardened against her. She went molten.

โ€œYeah?โ€ His hands roamed over her ass, kneading and stroking.

โ€œTomorrow morning,โ€ she said, kissing his mouth again and again. โ€œYouโ€™re outta here.โ€

He dropped her. Not entirely, but swiftly enough that her feet hit the ground with a thud. โ€œWhat?โ€

She ran her hands down his sweat-slick, muscled chest, then toyed with the band of his pants. Ran a finger up the length of him jutting out with impressive demand. โ€œWeโ€™re going on a little vacation. So do a good job of seeming like youโ€™re still brooding tonight.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ he repeated.

She kissed his pec, running her mouth over the taut brown nipple. He groaned softly, his hand sliding into her hair. โ€œPack a swimsuit,โ€ she murmured.

A male voice chuckled behind them, and Bryce went rigid, whirling to find Pollux, arm slung around a beautiful femaleโ€™s shoulders, walking by. โ€œIs he paying you by the hour?โ€ the Hammer asked.

The femaleโ€”theย Hindโ€”snickered, but said nothing as they approached. Solas, she was โ€ฆ beautiful and terrible. Sheโ€™d tortured countless people.

Killed themโ€”probably including Sofie Renast. If Cormac saw her, if he got this close, would he take the risk and try to end her?

The Hindโ€™s amber eyes gleamed as they met Bryceโ€™s, as if she knew every thought in her head. The deer shifter smiled in invitation.

But the Hind and the Hammer continued on, for all the world looking like a normal couple from behind. Bryce couldnโ€™t help herself as she said to Polluxโ€™s back, โ€œYou really need to come up with some new material, Pollux.โ€

He glared over a shoulder, white wings tucking in tight. But Bryce smiled sweetly and he, mercifully, kept walking, his wretched lover with him.

Bryce found Hunt smiling beside her, and it lightened any guilt about Juniper, any frustration with Fury, any fear and dread at being so close to the Hind, even as she yearned to tell him everything. Hunt tugged her hand, making to pull her into his room, but she planted her feet. โ€œTomorrow morning,โ€ she said hoarsely, her very bones aching with need. โ€œMeet me at home.โ€

Sheโ€™d tell him everything then. All the insane shit that had gone on since theyโ€™d last seen each other.

Hunt nodded, hearing what she didnโ€™t say. He tugged her again, and she went to him, tilting back her head to receive his kiss. His hand slipped down the front of her leggings. He growled against her mouth as his fingers found the slickness waiting for him.

She whimpered as he rubbed over her clit in a luxurious, taunting circle. โ€œIโ€™ll see you at dawn, Quinlan.โ€

With a nip at her bottom lip, Hunt stepped back into his room. And as he shut the door, he licked his fingers clean.

Ithan blinked at the phone ringing in his hand.

Prime.

Every Valbaran wolf had the Primeโ€™s number in their phones. But Ithan had never once called it, and the Prime of Wolves had never once called him. It couldnโ€™t be good.

He halted midway down the alley, neon signs casting pools of color on the cobblestones beneath his boots. Sucking in a breath, he answered,

โ€œHello?โ€

โ€œIthan Holstrom.โ€

He bowed his head, even though the Prime couldnโ€™t see him. โ€œYes, Prime.โ€

The withered old voice was heavy with age. โ€œI was informed today that you are no longer residing at the Den.โ€

โ€œOn Sabineโ€™s order, yes.โ€ โ€œWhy?โ€

Ithan swallowed. He didnโ€™t dare say why. Sabine would deny it anyway.

Sabine was the maleโ€™s daughter.

โ€œTell me why.โ€ A hint of the Alpha the Prime had been during his younger years came through in his voice. This male had made the Fendyr family a force to be reckoned with in Valbara.

โ€œPerhaps ask your daughter.โ€

โ€œI want to hear it from you, pup.โ€

Ithanโ€™s throat worked. โ€œIt was punishment for disobeying her orders during the attack this spring and helping the humans in Asphodel Meadows. And punishment for praising Bryce Quinlanโ€™s actions during the attack in a magazine article.โ€

โ€œI see.โ€ Apparently, that was all the Prime needed. โ€œWhat do you plan to do now?โ€

Ithan straightened. โ€œIโ€™m, ah, living with Prince Ruhn Danaan and his friends. Helping them out in the Fae division of the Aux.โ€ Helping with a rebellion.

โ€œIs that where you wish to be?โ€ โ€œIs there an alternative?โ€

A drawn-out, too-tense pause. โ€œI would make you Alpha of your own pack. You have it in youโ€”Iโ€™ve sensed it. For too long, you have suppressed it so others might lead.โ€

The ground beneath Ithan seemed to rock. โ€œI โ€ฆ What about Sabine?โ€ Ithanโ€™s head swirled.

โ€œI shall deal with my daughter, if this is what you choose.โ€

Ithan had no fucking idea whoโ€™d even be in his pack. Heโ€™d locked himself out so thoroughly from old friends and family after Connorโ€™s death that heโ€™d only bothered to associate with Amelieโ€™s pack. Perry was the closest thing he had to a friend at the Den, and sheโ€™d never leave her sisterโ€™s

side. Ithan swallowed hard. โ€œIโ€™m honored, but โ€ฆ I need to think about this.โ€

โ€œYou have been through a great deal, boy. Take the time you need to decide, but know the offer stands. I would not lose another wolf of worthโ€” especially to the Fae.โ€ Before Ithan could say goodbye, the old wolf hung up. Stunned and reeling, Ithan leaned against one of the brick buildings in the alley. Alpha.

But โ€ฆ an Alpha in Sabineโ€™s shadow, once the Prime was gone. Sabine would beย hisย Prime. Amelie would reign as her Prime Apparent. And then Prime, when Sabine herself was gone.

He had little interest in serving either of them. But โ€ฆ was it a betrayal of the wolves, of his brotherโ€™s legacy, to leave the Valbaran packs to Sabineโ€™s cruelty?

He brushed his hair back from his face. It was longer than itโ€™d ever been while playing sunball. He couldnโ€™t tell if he liked it or not.

Fuck, he couldnโ€™t tell if he likedย himselfย or not.

Straightening, Ithan pushed off the wall and finished his walk, arriving at his destination. The towering doors to the Astronomerโ€™s building of horrors were shut. Ithan pulled the crescent moon door chime once.

No answer.

He pulled it a second time, then pressed an ear to one of the metal doors, listening for any hint of life. Not even a footstep, though he could make out the hum of the machines beyond. He knocked twice, and then pressed his shoulder into the door. It opened with a groan, nothing but darkness beyond. Ithan slipped in, silently shutting the heavy door behind him. โ€œHello?โ€

Nothing. He aimed for the faint, pale glow of the three tanks in the center of the cavernous space. Heโ€™d never seen anything so strange and unsettlingโ€”the three beings whoโ€™d been sold into this life. Existence. This sure as fuck wasnโ€™t a life.

Not that heโ€™d know. He hadnโ€™t had one in two years.

Their visit last week had lingered like an unhealed wound.

He might have walked out of here condemning everything heโ€™d seen, but heโ€™d still given the Astronomer his money. Kept this place running.

He knew it bugged Bryce, but sheโ€™d been swept back into the shit with Danika, and as a princess, her hands were tied as far as a public scene.

Especially when she walked such a dangerous line these daysโ€”any additional bit of scrutiny might be her downfall.

But no one gave a fuck about him. No matter what the Prime had said. โ€œHello?โ€ he called again, the word echoing into the dimness.

โ€œHeโ€™s not here,โ€ rasped a hoarse female voice.

Ithan whirled, reaching for his gun as he scanned the darkness. His wolf-sight pierced through it, allowing him to make out the speakerโ€™s location. His hand dropped from his hip at the sight of her.

Long chestnut-brown hair draped over her too-thin, pale limbs, her body clad in that white shift that all three mystics wore. Her dark eyes were stillโ€”like she was only half-there. A face that might have been pretty, if it werenโ€™t so gaunt. So haunted.

Ithan swallowed, slowly approaching where she huddled against the wall, bony knees clutched to her chest. โ€œI wanted to see your โ€ฆ boss.โ€

He couldnโ€™t sayย owner, even though thatโ€™s what the old creep was. In the gloom, he could make out a worktable beyond the mystic sitting on the floor, with a small box atop it. Light filtered out from the box, and he had a good idea of what was kept inside it. Who were kept inside, trapped in those four rings, which were apparently valuable enough that the old male had left them behind, rather than risk them in the city at large.

The mysticโ€™s rasping voice sounded as if she hadnโ€™t spoken in ages. โ€œHe put the other two back in, but didnโ€™t have the part he needed to fix my machine. Heโ€™s at the Meat Market, meeting with the Viper Queen.โ€

Ithan sniffed, trying to get a read on her. All he could get from this distance was salt. Like it had brined the scent right out of her. โ€œYou know when heโ€™ll be back?โ€

She only stared at him, like she was still hooked up to the machine beyond them. โ€œYou were the one who freed me.โ€ Solas, she sat with such โ€ฆ Vanir stillness. Heโ€™d never realized how muchย heย moved until he stood before her. And heโ€™d considered himself capable of a wolfโ€™s utter stillness.

โ€œYeah, sorry.โ€ But the word stuckโ€”freed. Sheโ€™d been pleading to go back. Heโ€™d assumed sheโ€™d meant into the between-place where the mystics roamed, but โ€ฆ What if sheโ€™d meant this worldโ€”back to her life before? The family who had sold her into this?

Not his problem, not his issue to solve. But he still asked, โ€œAre you okay?โ€ She didnโ€™t look okay. She sat the way he had in his dorm bathroom

the night heโ€™d learned that Connor was dead.

The mystic only said, โ€œHe will be back soon.โ€ โ€œThen Iโ€™ll wait for him.โ€

โ€œHe will not be pleased.โ€

Ithan offered her a reassuring smile. โ€œI can pay, donโ€™t worry.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™ve caused him a great deal of inconvenience. Heโ€™ll kick you out.โ€ Ithan took a step closer. โ€œCan you help me, then?โ€

โ€œI canโ€™t do anything unless Iโ€™m in the tank. And I donโ€™t know how to use the machines to ask the others.โ€

โ€œAll right.โ€

She angled her head. โ€œWhat do you want to know?โ€

He swallowed hard. โ€œWas it true, what the demon prince said, about my brother being safe for now?โ€

She frowned, her full mouth unnaturally pale. โ€œI could only sense the otherโ€™s terror,โ€ she said, nodding toward the tanks. โ€œNot what was said.โ€

Ithan rubbed the back of his neck. โ€œAll right. Thanks. Thatโ€™s all I needed.โ€ He had to know for sure that Connor was safe. There had to be some way to help him.

She said, โ€œYou could find a necromancer. They would know the truth.โ€ โ€œNecromancers are few and far between, and highly regulated,โ€ Ithan

said. โ€œBut thanks again. And, uh โ€ฆ good luck.โ€

He turned back toward the doors. The mystic shifted slightly, and the movement sent a whisper of her scent toward him. Snow and embers andโ€”

Ithan went rigid. Whirled to her. โ€œYouโ€™re a wolf. What are you doing here?โ€

She didnโ€™t answer.

โ€œYour pack allowed this to happen?โ€ Rage boiled his blood. Claws appeared at his fingertips.

โ€œMy parents had no pack,โ€ she said hoarsely. โ€œThey roamed the tundra of Nena with me and my ten siblings. My gifts became apparent when I was three. By four, I was in there.โ€ She pointed to the tank, and Ithan recoiled in horror.

A wolf family hadย soldย their pup, and sheโ€™d gone into that tankโ€”

โ€œHow long?โ€ he asked, unable to stop his trembling anger. โ€œHow long have you been in here?โ€

She shook her head. โ€œI โ€ฆ I donโ€™t know.โ€

โ€œWhen were you born? What year?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t know. I donโ€™t even remember how long itโ€™s been since I made the Drop. He had some official come here to mark it, but โ€ฆ I donโ€™t remember.โ€

Ithan rubbed at his chest. โ€œSolas.โ€ She appeared as young as him, but among the Vanir, that meant nothing. She could be hundreds of years old. Gods, how had she even made the Drop here? โ€œWhatโ€™s your name? Your family name?โ€

โ€œMy parents never named me, and I never learned their names beyond Mother and Father.โ€ Her voice sharpenedโ€”a hint of temper shining through. โ€œYou should leave.โ€

โ€œYou canโ€™t be in here.โ€

โ€œThereโ€™s a contract that suggests otherwise.โ€

โ€œYou are aย wolf,โ€ he snarled. โ€œYouโ€™re kept in a fuckingย cageย here.โ€ Heโ€™d go right to the Prime. Make him order the Astronomer to free this unnamed female.

โ€œMy siblings and parents are able to eat and live comfortably because I am here. That will cease when I am gone. They will again starve.โ€

โ€œToo fucking bad,โ€ Ithan said, but he could see itโ€”the determination in her expression that told him he wasnโ€™t going to pry her out of here. And he could understand it, that need to give over all of herself so that her family could survive. So he amended, โ€œMy name is Ithan Holstrom. You ever want to get out of here, send word.โ€ He had no idea how, but โ€ฆ maybe heโ€™d check in on her every few months. Come up with excuses to ask her questions.

Caution flooded her eyes, but she nodded.

It occurred to him then that she was likely sitting on the cold floor because her thin legs had atrophied from being in the tank for so long. That old piece of shit had left her here like this.

Ithan scanned the space for anything resembling a blanket and found nothing. He only had his T-shirt, and as he reached for the hem, she said, โ€œDonโ€™t. Heโ€™ll know you were here.โ€

โ€œGood.โ€

She shook her head. โ€œHeโ€™s possessive. If he even thinks Iโ€™ve had contact with someone other than him, heโ€™ll send me down to Hel with an unimportant question.โ€ She trembled slightly. Heโ€™d done it before.

โ€œWhy?โ€

โ€œDemons like to play,โ€ she whispered.

Ithanโ€™s throat closed up. โ€œYou sure you donโ€™t want to leave? I can carry you right now, and weโ€™ll figure out the other shit. The Prime will protect you.โ€

โ€œYou know the Prime?โ€ Her voice filled with whispered awe. โ€œI only heard my parents speak of him, when I was young.โ€

So they hadnโ€™t been entirely shut off from the world, then. โ€œHeโ€™ll help you. Iโ€™ll help you.โ€

Her face again became aloof. โ€œYou must go.โ€ โ€œFine.โ€

โ€œFine,โ€ she echoed back, with a hint of that temper again. A bit of dominance that had the wolf in him perking up.

He met her stare. Not just a bit of dominance โ€ฆ that was a glimmer of anย Alphaโ€™s dominance. His knees buckled slightly, his wolf instinct weighing whether to challenge or bow.

An Alpha. Here, in a tank. She would likely have been her familyโ€™s heir, then. Had they known what she was, even at age four? He suppressed a growl. Had her parents sent her hereย becauseย sheโ€™d be a threat to their rule over the family?

But Ithan shoved the questions aside. Backed toward the doors again. โ€œYou should have a name.โ€

โ€œWell, I donโ€™t,โ€ she shot back.

Definitely Alpha, with that tone, that glimmer of unbending backbone. Someone the wolf in him would have liked to tangle with.

And to leave her here โ€ฆ It didnโ€™t sit right. With him, with the wolf in his heart, broken and lonely as it might have been. He had to do something. Anything. But since she clearly wasnโ€™t going to leave this place โ€ฆ Maybe there was someone else he could help.

Ithan eyed the small box on the worktable, and didnโ€™t question himself as he snatched it up. She tried and failed to rise, her weakened legs betraying her. โ€œHe willย killย you for taking themโ€”โ€

Ithan strode to the doors, the box of fire sprites trapped inside their rings in hand. โ€œIf heโ€™s got a problem with it, he can take it up with the Prime.โ€ And explain why he was holding a wolf captive in here.

Her throat bobbed, but she said nothing more.

So Ithan stalked outside, onto the jarringly normal street beyond, and shut the heavy door behind him. But despite the distance he quickly put between himself and the mystics, his thoughts circled back to her, again and again.

The wolf with no name, trapped in the dark.

โ€œIโ€™m requesting an aquatic team of twenty-five for tomorrow,โ€ Tharion said to his queen, hands clenched behind his back, tail fanning idly in the river current. The River Queen sat in her humanoid form among a bed of rocky coral beside her throne, weaving sea nettle, her dark blue gown drifting around her.

โ€œNo,โ€ she said simply.

Tharion blinked. โ€œWe have solid intel that this shipment is coming from Pangera,ย andย that Pippa Spetsos is likely already there. You want me to capture her, to interrogate her about Emileโ€™s whereabouts, Iโ€™m going to need backup.โ€

โ€œAnd have so many witnesses mark the Blue Courtโ€™s involvement?โ€

Whatย isย our involvement?ย Tharion didnโ€™t dare ask.ย Whatโ€™s your stake in this beyond wanting the kidโ€™s power?

His queen went on, โ€œYou will go, and go alone. I take it your current cadre of โ€ฆ people will be with you.โ€

โ€œYes.โ€

โ€œThat should be enough to question her, given your companionsโ€™ powers.โ€

โ€œEven five mer agentsโ€”โ€ โ€œJust you, Tharion.โ€

He couldnโ€™t stop himself as he said, โ€œSome people might think you were trying to kill me off, you know.โ€

Slowly, so slowly, the River Queen turned from her weaving. He could have sworn a tremor went through the riverbed. But her voice was dangerously smooth as she said, โ€œThen defend my honor against such slander and return alive.โ€

He clenched his jaw, but bowed his head. โ€œShall I say goodbye to your daughter, then? In case it is my last chance to do so?โ€

Her lips curled upward. โ€œI think youโ€™ve caused her enough distress already.โ€

The words struck true. She might be a monster in so many ways, but she was right about him in that regard. So Tharion swam into the clear blue, letting the current pound the anger from his head.

If there was a chance of attaining Emileโ€™s power, the River Queen would snatch it up.

Tharion hoped he had it in himself to stop her.

The chairs had turned into velvet couches on the dream bridge.

Ruhn slid into his, surveying the endless dark surrounding him. He peered past the fainting couch to Dayโ€™s โ€œside.โ€ If he were to follow her that way, would he wind up in her mind? See the things she saw? Look through her eyes and know who she was, where she was? Would he be able to read every thought in her head?

He could speak into someoneโ€™s mind, but to actuallyย enterย it, to read thoughts as his cousins in Avallen could โ€ฆ Was this how they did it? It seemed like such a gross violation. But if she invited him, if she wanted him in there, could he manage it?

Flame rippled before him, and there she was, sprawled on the couch. โ€œHey,โ€ he said, sitting back in his couch.

โ€œAny information to report?โ€ she said by way of greeting. โ€œSo weโ€™re doing the formal thing tonight.โ€

She sat up straighter. โ€œThis bridge is a path for information. Itโ€™s our first and greatest duty. If youโ€™re coming here for someone to flirt with, I suggest you look elsewhere.โ€

He snorted. โ€œYou think Iโ€™m flirting with you?โ€

โ€œWould you sayย heyย in that manner to a male agent?โ€

โ€œProbably, yeah.โ€ But he conceded, โ€œNot with the same tone, though.โ€ โ€œExactly.โ€

โ€œWell, you caught me. Iโ€™m ready for my punishment.โ€

She laughed, a full, throaty sound that heโ€™d never heard before. โ€œI donโ€™t think you could handle the sort of punishment I dole out.โ€

His balls tightened; he couldnโ€™t help it. โ€œWe talking โ€ฆ restraints?

Flogging?โ€

He could have sworn he got a flash of teeth biting into a lower lip. โ€œNeither. I donโ€™t care for any of that in bed. But what doย youย prefer?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s always the ladyโ€™s choice with me. Iโ€™m game for anything.โ€

She angled her head, a waterfall of flame spilling down the side of the couch, as if she draped long, lovely hair over it. โ€œSo youโ€™re not a โ€ฆ dominant male.โ€

โ€œOh, Iโ€™m dominant,โ€ he said, grinning. โ€œIโ€™m just not into pressuring my partners into doing anything they donโ€™t like.โ€

She studied him at that. โ€œYou sayย dominantย with such pride. Are you a wolf, then? Some sort of shifter?โ€

โ€œLook whoโ€™s trying to figure me out now.โ€ โ€œAre you?โ€

โ€œNo. Areย youย a wolf?โ€

โ€œDo I seem like one to you?โ€

โ€œNo. You seem like โ€ฆโ€ Someone crafted of air and dreams and cold vengeance. โ€œIโ€™m guessing youโ€™re in Sky and Breath.โ€

She went still. Had he struck true? โ€œWhy do you say that?โ€

โ€œYou remind me of the wind.โ€ He tried to explain. โ€œPowerful and able to cool or freeze with half a thought, shaping the world itself though no one can see you. Only your impact on things.โ€ He added, โ€œIt seems lonely, now that Iโ€™m saying it.โ€

โ€œIt is,โ€ she said, and he was stunned that sheโ€™d admitted it. โ€œBut thank you for the kind words.โ€

โ€œWere they kind?โ€

โ€œThey were accurate. You see me. Itโ€™s more than I can say about anyone else.โ€

For a moment, they stared at each other. He was rewarded by a shifting of her flame, revealing large eyes that swept upward at the edgesโ€”crafted of fire, but he could still make out their shape. The clarity in them before her flame veiled her once more. He cleared his throat. โ€œI guess I should tell you that the rebels were successful with their hit on the Spine. Theyโ€™re bringing over the Asteriโ€™s mech prototype to the Coronal Islands tomorrow night.โ€

She straightened. โ€œWhy?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t know. I was told byโ€”my informant. A rebel contingent will be there to receive the shipment. Where it goes from there, I donโ€™t know.โ€

Cormac wanted Athalar to examine the Asteriโ€™s prototypeโ€”see how it differed from the humansโ€™ that the angel had faced so often in battle.

Because Athalar was the only one among them whoโ€™d faced off against a mech-suit. Whoโ€™d apparently spent time in Pangera taking them apart and putting them back together again. Cormac, as heโ€™d been fighting alongside the human rebels, had never battled oneโ€”and he wanted an outside opinion on whether replicating the Asteriโ€™s model would be beneficial.

And because Athalar was going, Bryce was going. And because Bryce was going, Ruhn was going. And Tharion would join them, as the River Queen had ordered him to.

Flynn, Dec, and Ithan would remainโ€”too many people going would raise suspicions. But theyโ€™d been pissed to learn of it.ย Youโ€™re benching poor Holstrom, Flynn had complained. Dec had added,ย Do you know what that does to a maleโ€™s ego?ย Ithan had only grunted his agreement, but hadnโ€™t argued, a distant expression on his face. Like the wolfโ€™s mind was elsewhere.

โ€œWhoโ€™s going to be there?โ€

โ€œHe angled his head. โ€œWe got word that Pippa Spetsos and her Lightfall squadron will also be present. We have some questions for her about โ€ฆ a missing person.โ€

She straightened. โ€œIs Spetsos being given command of the Valbaran front?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t know. But weโ€™re hoping we can convince whoever is there from Command otherwise. We suspect that she and Lightfall have left a trail of bodies all around the countryside.โ€

Day was quiet for a moment, then asked, โ€œDo you know the name of the ship thatโ€™s carrying the prototype?โ€

โ€œNo.โ€

โ€œWhat island?โ€

โ€œWhy are you grilling me on this?โ€ โ€œI want to make sure itโ€™s not a trap.โ€

He grinned. โ€œBecause youโ€™d miss me if I died?โ€

โ€œBecause of the information theyโ€™d squeeze from you before you did.โ€ โ€œCold, Day. Real cold.โ€

She laughed softly. โ€œItโ€™s the only way to survive.โ€ It was. โ€œWeโ€™re going to Ydra. Thatโ€™s all I know.โ€

She nodded, like the name meant something to her. โ€œIf they catch you, running is your best option. Donโ€™t fight.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not programmed that way.โ€ โ€œThen reprogram yourself.โ€

He crossed his arms. โ€œI donโ€™t think Iโ€”โ€

Day hissed, bending over. She twitched, almost convulsing. โ€œDay?โ€

She sucked in a breath, then was gone.

โ€œDay!โ€ His voice echoed across the void.

He didnโ€™t think. Launching over the fainting couch, he sprinted down her end of the bridge, into the dark and night, flinging himself after herโ€”

Ruhn slammed into a wall of black adamant. Time slowed, bringing with it flashes of sensation. No images, all โ€ฆย touch.

Bones grinding in her left wrist from where it was being squeezed tight enough to hurt; it was the pain that had awoken her, pulled her away from the bridgeโ€”

Willing herself to yield, give over, become his, to find some way to savor this. Teeth scraping at her nipple, clamping downโ€”

Ruhn collided with the ground, the sensations vanishing. He surged to his feet, pressing a palm against the black wall.

Nothing. No echo to tell him what was happening.

Well, heย knewย what was happening. Heโ€™d gotten the sense of very rough sex, and though he had the distinct feeling that it was consensual, it wasnโ€™t

โ€ฆ meaningful. Whoever slept at her side had woken her with it.

The impenetrable black loomed before him. The wall of her mind.

He had no idea why he waited. Why he stayed. Had no idea how much time passed until a flame once more emerged from that wall.

Her fire had banked enough that he could make out long legs walking toward him. Halting upon finding him kneeling. Then she dropped to her knees as well, flame again swallowing her whole.

โ€œAre you all right?โ€ he asked.

โ€œYes.โ€ The word was a hiss of embers being extinguished. โ€œWhat was that?โ€

โ€œYouโ€™ve never had sex before?โ€

He straightened at the slicing question. โ€œAre you all right?โ€ he asked again.

โ€œI said I was.โ€

โ€œYou werenโ€™tโ€”โ€

โ€œNo. He asked, albeit a bit suddenly, and I said yes.โ€

Ruhnโ€™s insides twisted at the utter iciness. โ€œYou donโ€™t seem to have enjoyed it.โ€

โ€œIs it your business whether I find release or not?โ€ โ€œDid you?โ€

โ€œExcuse me?โ€

โ€œDid you orgasm?โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s absolutely none of your business.โ€ โ€œYouโ€™re right.โ€

Again, silence fell, but they remained kneeling there, face-to-face. She said after a tense moment, โ€œI hate him. No one knows it, but I do. He disgusts me.โ€

โ€œThen why sleep with him?โ€

โ€œBecause I โ€ฆโ€ A long sigh. โ€œItโ€™s complicated.โ€ โ€œIndulge me.โ€

โ€œDo you only sleep with people you like?โ€ โ€œYes.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™ve never fucked someone you hate?โ€

He considered, even as the sound of her saying the wordย fuckedย did something to his cock. โ€œAll right. Maybe once. But it was an ex.โ€ A Fae female heโ€™d dated decades ago, who he hadnโ€™t cared to remember until now.

โ€œThen you can think of this like that.โ€ โ€œSo heโ€™sโ€”โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t want to talk about him.โ€

Ruhn blew out a breath. โ€œI wanted to make sure youโ€™re okay. You scared the shit out of me.โ€

โ€œWhy?โ€

โ€œOne moment you were here, the next you were gone. It seemed like you were in pain.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t be a fool and get attached enough to worry.โ€

โ€œIโ€™d be a monster not to care whether another person is hurt.โ€

โ€œThereโ€™s no place for that in this war. The sooner you realize it, the less pain youโ€™ll feel.โ€

โ€œSo weโ€™re back to the ice-queen routine.โ€

She drew up. โ€œRoutine?โ€

โ€œWhereโ€™s the wild and crazy female I was talking about bondage with earlier?โ€

She laughed. He liked the soundโ€”it was low and throaty and predatory.

Fuck, he liked that sound a lot. โ€œYou are such a typical Valbaran male.โ€

โ€œI told you: Come visit me in Lunathion. Iโ€™ll show you a good time, Day.โ€

โ€œSo eager to meet me.โ€

โ€œI like the sound of your voice. I want to know the face behind it.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s not going to happen. But thank you.โ€ She added after a moment, โ€œI like the sound of your voice, too.โ€

โ€œYeah?โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€ย She chuckled. โ€œYouโ€™re trouble.โ€

โ€œIs it clichรฉ if I say thatย Troubleย is my middle name?โ€ โ€œOh yes. Very.โ€

โ€œWhat wouldย yourย middle name be?โ€ he teased.

Her flames pulled back, revealing those eyes of pure fire. โ€œRetribution.โ€ He grinned wickedly. โ€œBadass.โ€

She laughed again, and his cock hardened at the sound. โ€œGoodbye, Night.โ€

โ€œWhere are you going?โ€ โ€œTo sleep. Properly.โ€

โ€œIsnโ€™t your body resting?โ€ โ€œYes, but my mind is not.โ€

He didnโ€™t know why, but he gestured to her fainting couch. โ€œThen sit back. Relax.โ€

โ€œYou want me to stay?โ€ โ€œHonestly? Yeah. I do.โ€ โ€œWhy?โ€

โ€œBecause I feel calm around you. Thereโ€™s so much shit going down, and I โ€ฆ I like being here. With you.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t think most females would be flattered to be called โ€˜calmingโ€™ by a handsome male.โ€

โ€œWho says Iโ€™m handsome?โ€

โ€œYou talk like someone whoโ€™s well aware of his good looks.โ€ โ€œLike an arrogant asshole, then.โ€

โ€œYour words, not mine.โ€

Day rose to her feet, striding to the fainting couch. Her flames rippled as she lay upon it, and Ruhn jumped onto his own couch.

โ€œAll I need is a TV and a beer and Iโ€™m set,โ€ he said.

She snickered, curling on her side. โ€œAs I said: typical Valbaran male.โ€

Ruhn closed his eyes, bathing in the timbre of her voice. โ€œYou gotta work on those compliments, Day.โ€

Another chuckle, sleepier this time. โ€œIโ€™ll add it to my to-do list, Night.โ€
