Bryce cursed herself for opening the door. For letting the wolf in. For letting it get to this so quickly: Ithan and Sabine, about to splatter this apartment with blood. Ithanโs blood.
Bryceโs mouth dried out. Think.ย Think.
Ruhn swiftly glanced at her, but didnโt suggest any bright ideas mind-to-mind.
Sabine snarled at Ithan, โYour brother knew his place. Was content to be Danikaโs Second. Youโre not nearly as smart as he was.โ
Ithan didnโt back down as Sabine advanced. โI might not be as smart as Connor,โ he said, โbut at least I wasnโt dumb enough to sleep with Mordoc.โ
Sabine halted. โShut your mouth, boy.โ
Ithan laughed, cold and lifeless. Bryce had never heard him make such a sound. โWe never learned during that last visit: Was it an arranged pairing between you two, or some drunk decision?โ
Mordocโthe Hindโs captain?
โI will rip out your throat,โ Sabine growled, stepping closer. But Bryce saw itโthe glimmer of surprise. Doubt. Heโd thrown Sabine off her game a little with that volley.
Again, Ithan didnโt lower his eyes. โHeโs here in this city. Are you going to see him? Take him to the Black Dock to bid farewell to his daughter?โ
Bryceโs stomach dropped, but she kept her face neutral. Danika had never said. Had always claimed it was a โฆ
A male not worth knowing or remembering.
Bryce had assumed it was some lesser wolf, some male too submissive to keep Sabineโs interest, and Sabine had refused to let Danika see him because of it. Even when Danika had known the truth of Bryceโs parentage, sheโd never told Bryce about her own lineage. The thought burned like acid.
Sabine spat, โI know what youโre trying to do, Holstrom, and it wonโt work.โ
Ithan flexed his broad chest. Bryce had seen that same intense expression while facing off against opponents on the sunball field. Ithan had usually been the one to walk away from the encounter. And heโdย alwaysย walked away if a teammate joined in the fight.
So Bryce stepped up. Said to Sabine, โWas Danika a rebel?โ Sabine whipped her head to her. โWhat?โ
Bryce kept her shoulders back, head high. She outranked Sabine in position and power now, she reminded herself. โDid Danika have contact with the Ophion rebels?โ
Sabine backed away. Just one step. โWhy would you ever ask that?โ Ithan ignored the question and countered, โWas it because of Mordoc?
She was so disgusted by him that she helped the rebels to spite him?โ
Bryce shoved from the other side, โMaybe she did it out of disgust for you, too.โ
Sabine backed away one more step. Predator turning into prey. She snarled, โYouโre both delusional.โ
โIs that so?โ Bryce asked, and then took a stab in the dark. โIโm not the one who ran all the way here to make sure Ithan and I werenโt plotting some kind of wolf-coup against you.โ
Sabine bristled. Bryce pushed, getting no small delight out of it, โThatโs the fear, right? That Iโm going to use my fancy princess title to get Holstrom to replace you somehow? I mean, youโve got no heir beyond Amelie right now. And Ithanโs as dominant as she is. But I donโt think the Den likes Amelieโor you, for that matterโnearly as much as they love him.โ
Ithan blinked at her in surprise. But Bryce smiled at Sabine, whoโd gone stone-faced as she snarled, โStay out of wolf business.โ
Bryce taunted, โI wonder how hard it would be to convince the Prime and the Den that Ithan is the bright future of the Valbaran wolvesโโ
โBryce,โ Ithan warned. Had he truly never considered such a thing?
Sabineโs hand drifted to something at her back, and Ruhn aimed his gun. โNah,โ Bryceโs brother said, smiling wickedly. โI donโt think so.โ
A familiar ripple of charged air filled the room a moment before Hunt said, โNeither do I,โ and appeared in the doorway so silently Bryce knew heโd crept up. Relief nearly buckled her knees as Hunt stepped into the apartment, gun pointed at the back of Sabineโs head. โYouโre going to leave, and never fucking bother us again.โ
Sabine seethed, โAllow me to give you a bit of advice. You tangle with Mordoc, and youโll get whatโs coming to you. Ask him about Danika and see what he does to get answers out of you.โ
Ithanโs teeth flashed. โGet out, Sabine.โ โYou donโt give me orders.โ
The wolves faced off: one young and brokenhearted, the other in her primeโand heartless. Could someone like Ithan, if he wanted it, ever win in a battle for dominance?
But then another figure stepped into the apartment behind Hunt.
Baxian. The angel shifter had a gun drawn, aimed at Sabineโs legs to disable her if she tried to run.
Only a glimmer of surprise on Huntโs face told Bryce this wasnโt a planned appearance.
Sabine turned slowly. Recognition flared in her eyes. And something like fear.
Baxianโs teeth gleamed in a feral grin. โHello, Sabine.โ
Sabine simmered with rage, but hissed, โYouโre all carrion,โ and stormed from the apartment.
โYou all right?โ Hunt asked Bryce as he looked her over. The redness around her throat was fading before his eyes.
Bryce scowled. โI could have done without being hurled into the side of the couch.โ
Baxian, still by the door, huffed a laugh.
Hunt turned toward him, lightning at the ready. โYou got nothing better to do with your time than follow me around?โ
โIt seemed like you had an emergency,โ Baxian retorted. โI figured you might need backup. Especially considering where you were this morning.โ A slash of a smile. โI worried something had followed you back across the Istros.โ
Hunt clenched his jaw hard enough to hurt. โWhat about Isaiah?โ โYou mean his pathetic distraction attempt?โ Baxian snorted.
Before Hunt could reply, Ithan asked the Helhound, โYou know Sabine?โ
Baxianโs face darkened. โIn passing.โ From the way Sabine had acted, there was definitely more to it than that.
But Bryce suddenly asked Ithan, โMordoc is โฆ was โฆ Heโs Danikaโs
father?โ
Ithan gazed at his feet. โYeah.โ
โAs in, the male who sired her. Like, gave her his genetic material.โ Ithanโs eyes blazed. โYeah.โ
โAnd no one thought to fucking tell me?โ
โI only knew because he visited the Den once, a year before we met you. She got her bloodhound gift from him. It was her secret to keep, but now that sheโs goneโโ
โWhy wouldnโt she tell me?โ Bryce rubbed at her chest. Hunt took her hand. Brushed his thumb over her knuckles.
โWould you want that asshole for a father?โ Hunt asked.
โI have an asshole father already,โ Bryce said, and Ruhn grunted his agreement. โIโd have understood.โ Hunt squeezed her hand in gentle reassurance.
โI donโt know why she didnโt say anything to you.โ Ithan dropped onto the couch and ran his hands through his hair. โDanika would have become my Alpha one day, and Sabine ruler of us all, so if they wanted it kept quiet, I had no choice.โ Until Sabine had exiled him, freeing Ithan from those restrictions.
โWould you have taken Sabine down just now?โ Tharion asked. โI might have tried,โ Ithan admitted.
Hunt whistled. But it was Baxian who said, โYou wouldnโt have won tonight.โ
Ithan growled, โDid I ask for your opinion, dog?โ
Hunt glanced between them. Interesting, that Ithan saw him as a dog, not an angel. His animal form took precedence for another shifter, apparently.
Baxian growled right back. โI said you wouldnโt have wonย tonight. But another day, give yourself a few more years, pup, and maybe.โ
โAnd youโre an expert in such things?โ
Ithan was still itching for a fight. Perhaps Baxian was about to give him one, sensing his need for it. Baxianโs wings tucked in. Definitely primed for a fight.
Bryce massaged her temples. โGo to the gym or the roof if youโre going to brawl. Please. I canโt afford to lose any more furniture.โ She scowled at Ithan at that.
Hunt snickered. โWeโll get through the mourning process together, Quinlan. Have a proper send-off for the coffee table. Holstrom should give the eulogy, since he broke it.โ
His phone buzzed, and he checked it to find Isaiahโs message.ย All ok?
He wrote back,ย Yeah. You?
Sheโs upset you left. Didnโt say anything, but I can tell. Baxian bailed,
too.
Fuck. He replied,ย Tell her it was an emergency and that Baxian needed
to help me.
He trailed you?
Just busting my balls, Hunt lied.
All right. Be careful.
Ithan said to Ruhn, โIโm accepting your offer.โ
Huntโs brows twitched toward each other. Bryce asked, โWhat offer?โ
Ruhn sized her up before saying, โTo come live with me and the guys.
Because of your thin-ass walls.โ
Tharion said with mock outrage, โI had dibs on the pup asย myย friend.โ
โSorry for sexiling you, Ithan,โ Bryce muttered. Hunt laughed, but Ithan didnโt. He didnโt look at Bryce at all. Weird.
Ruhn said to Ithan, โAll right. You fighting that asshole first, or can we go?โ He nodded to Baxian.
Hunt kept perfectly still. Ready to either intervene or referee.
Ithan surveyed the angel with that athletic precision and focus. Baxian only smiled at him in invitation. How many times had Hunt seen that
expression on the Helhoundโs face before he ripped into someone?
But Ithan wisely shook his head. โAnother time.โ
Three minutes later, Ithan was stepping into the hallway with Ruhn and Tharion, who had to go report to his queen once more.
โIthan,โ Bryce said before he could leave. From the kitchen, Hunt watched her take a step into the hall, then halt, as if catching herself. โWe made a good team.โ
From his angle, Hunt couldnโt see Ithanโs face, but he heard the quiet โYeah,โ right before the elevator doors dinged. Then, โWe did.โ For all the world, Hunt could have sworn the wolf sounded sad.
A moment later, Bryce walked back into the apartment and aimed right for Hunt, looking like sheโd drop into his arms with exhaustion. She drew up short upon seeing Baxian. โEnjoying the view?โ
Baxian stopped his surveying. โNice place. Whyโd Sabine come here?โ Bryce examined her nails. โShe was pissed that Iโve been harboring
Ithan after she kicked his ass to the curb.โ
โYou know about her and Mordoc, though.โ It wasnโt exactly a question.
โYouย know?โ Hunt asked.
Baxian shrugged one shoulder. โIโve spent years with the Hind and those who serve her. I picked up a few interesting details.โ
โWhat happened when Mordoc visited Danika?โ Bryce asked.
โIt didnโt go well. He came back to Sandrielโs castle โฆโ Baxian said to Hunt, โRemember the time he ate that human couple?โ
Bryce choked. โHeย what?โ Hunt said roughly, โYeah.โ
โThat was when heโd returned from the visit to the Den,โ Baxian explained. โHe was in such a rage that he went out and killed a human couple he found on the street. Started eating the female while the male was still alive and begging for mercy.โ
โBurning fucking Solas,โ Bryce breathed, her hand finding Huntโs.
โSabine was right to warn you away from him,โ Baxian said, aiming for the door.
Hunt grunted. โI never thought heโd be in this city.โ
โLetโs hope heโs gone soon, then,โ Baxian said, not looking back.
Bryce said, hand sliding from Huntโs, โWhy didย youย come here, Baxian?โ
The angel-shifter halted. โAthalar seemed like he needed help. Weโre partners, after all.โ His grin was savage, mocking. โAnd watching Celestina and Ephraim pretend to be into each other was too torturous, even for me.โ
Bryce was having none of it, though. โYou were also at the Black Dock this morning.โ
โAre you asking if Iโm spying on you?โ
โEither that or you desperately want in on the cool kidsโ club.โ
โA good spy would tell you no, and say you were being paranoid.โ โBut youโre โฆ not a good spy?โ
โIโm not a spy at all, and youโre being paranoid.โ
Bryce rolled her eyes, and Hunt smiled to himself as she walked to the door, making to shut it behind Baxian. As she closed the door, he heard her say to the Helhound, โYouโre going to fit right in around here.โ
โWhyโd you say that to him?โ Hunt asked as he slumped onto the bed beside her later that night.
Bryce rested her head on Huntโs shoulder. โSay what?โ โThat thing to Baxian about fitting in.โ
โJealous?โ
โI just โฆโ His chest heaved as he sighed. โHeโs a bad male.โ โI know. Donโt think too much about my nonsense, Hunt.โ
โNo, itโs not that. Itโs โฆ Heโs a bad male. I know he is. But I was no better than him.โ
She touched his cheek. โYouโre a good person, Hunt.โ Sheโd assured him of that so many times now.
โI told Celestina Iโd have her back with Ephraim and then bailed. Good people donโt do that.โ
โYou bailed to come rescue your mate from the big bad wolf.โ
He flicked her nose, shifting onto his side, wings a wall of gray behind him. โI canโt believe Mordoc is Danikaโs father.โ
โI canโt believe our souls get turned into firstlight food,โ she countered. โOr that the Hind brought her dreadwolves here. Or that the Under-King is a fucking psychopath.โ
Huntโs laugh rumbled through her. โRough day.โ
โWhat do you think happened in the Bone Quarterโwith your lightning and the firstlight and everything?โ
โWhat were you even thinking, jumping in front of my lightning?โ โIt worked, didnโt it?โ
He glared. โYou know that scar on Baxianโs neck? I did that to him. With my lightning. With a blow a fraction of what I unleashed on the Starsword.โ
โYeah, yeah, youโre the tough, smart male who knows best and Iโm an impulsive female whose feelings get her in troubleโโ
โFor fuckโs sake, Quinlan.โ
She propped her head on a hand. โSo you had no idea you could do that? Take the energy from the Dead Gate and transform it into lightning and all that?โ
โNo. It never occurred to me to channel anything into my lightning until the Prince of the Pit suggested it the other night. But โฆ it made sense: you took the power out of the Heart Gate this spring, and Sofie Renast, as a thunderbird, could do something similar, so โฆ even if the push came from the Prince of the Pit, trying it out seemed like a good alternative to being eaten.โ
โYou went โฆโ She wiggled her fingers in the air. โAll lightning-berserker.โ
He kissed her brow, running a hand down her hip. โI get a little hysterical when your safety is involved.โ
She kissed the tip of his nose. โSuch an alphahole.โ But she flopped back on the bed, tucking her arms under her head. โYou think there actuallyย isย a resting place for our souls?โ She sighed at the ceiling. โLike, if we died and didnโt go to those places โฆ what would happen?โ
โGhosts?โ
She scowled. โYouโre not helping.โ
He chuckled, tucking his hands behind his own head. She crossed her ankle over his shin, and they lay there in silence, staring at the ceiling.
He said after a while, โYou traded your resting place in the Bone Quarter for Danikaโs.โ
โGiven what happens to everyone over there, I feel kind of relieved about that now.โ
โYeah.โ He took one of her hands in his and laid their interlaced fingers atop his heart. โBut wherever youโre headed when this life is over, Quinlan, thatโs where I want to be, too.โ
