Chapter no 26

House of Sky and Breath (Crescent City, #2)

Bryce leaned against the alley side of a brick building bordering the Black Dock, arms crossed and face stony. Hunt, gods bless him, stood at her side, mirroring her position. Heโ€™d come right over the moment sheโ€™d called him, sensing that her eerily calm voice meant something big had gone down.

Sheโ€™d only managed to say something vague about Reapers before theyโ€™d found Cormac here, prowling for any hint of Emile.

Cormac lounged against the wall across the alley, focus on the quay beyond. Not even the vendors selling touristy crap came here. โ€œWell?โ€ the Avallen Prince asked, not taking his attention from the Black Dock.

โ€œYou can teleport,โ€ Bryce said, voice low.ย Thatย made Huntโ€™s eyes widen. He kept himself contained, though, solid and still as a statue, wings tucked inโ€”but brimming with power. One blink, and Hunt would unleash lightning on the prince.

โ€œWhat of it?โ€ Cormac asked with no small hint of haughtiness. โ€œWhat did you do to the Reapers you teleported out?โ€

โ€œPut them about half a mile up in the sky.โ€ The Avallen Prince smiled darkly. โ€œThey werenโ€™t happy.โ€

Huntโ€™s brows rose. But Bryce asked, โ€œYou can go that far? Itโ€™s that precise?โ€

โ€œI need to know the spot. If itโ€™s a trickier locationโ€”indoors, or a specific roomโ€”I need exact coordinates,โ€ Cormac said. โ€œMy accuracy is within two feet.โ€

Well, that explained how heโ€™d shown up at Ruhnโ€™s house party. Decโ€™s tech had picked up Cormac teleporting around the houseโ€™s perimeter to

calculate where he wanted to appear to make his grand entrance. Once heโ€™d had them, heโ€™d simply walked right out of a shadow in the doorway.

Hunt pointed to a dumpster halfway down the alley. โ€œTeleport there.โ€ Cormac bowed mockingly. โ€œLeft side or right side?โ€

Hunt leveled a cool stare at him. โ€œLeft,โ€ he challenged. Bryce suppressed a smile.

But Cormac bowed at the waist againโ€”and vanished. Within a blink, he reappeared where Hunt had indicated.

โ€œWell, fuck,โ€ Hunt muttered, rubbing the back of his neck. Then, Cormac reappeared before them, right where heโ€™d been standing.

Bryce pushed off the wall. โ€œHow the Hel do you do that?โ€

Cormac slicked back his blond hair. โ€œYou have to picture where you want to go. Then simply allow yourself to take that step. As if youโ€™re folding two points on a piece of paper so that the two points can meet.โ€

โ€œLike a wormhole,โ€ Hunt mused, wings rustling.

Cormac waved a dismissive hand. โ€œWormhole, teleportation, yes.

Whatever you want to call it.โ€

Bryce blew out an impressed breath. But it didnโ€™t explainโ€” โ€œHowโ€™d you know where to find me and Ruhn?โ€

โ€œI was on my way to meet you, remember?โ€ Cormac rolled his eyes, as if she should have figured it out by now. Asshole. โ€œI saw you run into the sewer, and I did some mental calculations for the jump. Thankfully, they were right.โ€

Hunt let out an approving grunt, but said nothing.

So Bryce said, โ€œYouโ€™re going to teach me how to do that. Teleport.โ€

Hunt whipped his head to her. But Cormac simply nodded. โ€œIf itโ€™s within your wheelhouse, I will.โ€

Hunt blurted, โ€œIโ€™m sorry, but Fae can justย doย this shit?โ€

โ€œIย can do this shit,โ€ Cormac countered. โ€œIf Bryce has as much Starborn ability as she seems to, she might also be able to do this shit.โ€

โ€œWhy?โ€

โ€œBecause Iโ€™m the Super Powerful and Special Magic Starborn Princess,โ€ Bryce answered, waggling her eyebrows.

Cormac said, โ€œYou should treat your title and gifts with the reverence they are due.โ€

โ€œYou sound like a Reaper,โ€ she said, and leaned against Hunt. He tucked her into his side. Her clothes were still soaked. And smelled atrocious.

But Hunt didnโ€™t so much as sniff as he asked Cormac, โ€œWhere did you inherit the ability from?โ€

Cormac squared his shoulders, every inch the proud prince as he said, โ€œIt was once a gift of the Starborn. It was the reason I became so โ€ฆ focused on attaining the Starsword. I thought my ability to teleport meant that the bloodline had resurfaced in me, as Iโ€™ve never met anyone else who can do it.โ€ His eyes guttered as he added, โ€œAs you know, I was wrong. Some Starborn blood, apparently, but not enough to be worthy of the blade.โ€

Bryce wasnโ€™t going to touch that one. So she retied her wet hair into a tight bun atop her head. โ€œWhat are the odds that I have the gift, too?โ€

Cormac gave her a slashing smile. โ€œOnly one way to find out.โ€ Bryceโ€™s eyes glowed with the challenge. โ€œIt would be handy.โ€

Hunt murmured, his voice awed, โ€œIt would make you unstoppable.โ€

Bryce winked at Hunt. โ€œHel yeah, it would. Especially if those Reapers werenโ€™t full of shit about the Prince of the Pit sending them to challenge me to some epic battlefield duel. Worthy opponent, my ass.โ€

โ€œYou donโ€™t believe the Prince of the Pit sent them?โ€ Cormac asked.

โ€œI donโ€™t know what I believe,โ€ Bryce admitted. โ€œBut we need to confirm where those Reapers came fromโ€”who sent themโ€”before we make any moves.โ€

โ€œFair enough,โ€ Hunt said.

Bryce went on, โ€œBeyond that, this is twice now that weโ€™ve gotten warnings about Helโ€™s armies being ready. Apollionโ€™s a little heavy-handed for my tastes, but I guess heย reallyย wants to get the point across. And wants me leveled up by the time all Hel breaks loose. Literally, I guess.โ€

Bryce knew there was no fucking way sheโ€™d ever stand against the Star-Eater and live, not if she didnโ€™t expand her understanding of her power. Apollion had killed a fucking Asteri, for godsโ€™ sakes. Heโ€™d obliterate her.

She said to Cormac, โ€œTomorrow night. You. Me. Training center. Weโ€™ll try out this teleporting thing.โ€

โ€œFine,โ€ the prince said.

Bryce picked lingering dirt from beneath her nails and sighed. โ€œI could have lived without Hel getting mixed up in this. Without Apollion

apparently wanting in on Sofieโ€™s and Emileโ€™s powers.โ€

โ€œTheir powers,โ€ Cormac said, face thunderous, โ€œare a gift and a curse.

Iโ€™m not surprised at all that so many people want them.โ€

Hunt frowned. โ€œAnd you really think youโ€™re going to find Emile just hanging around here?โ€

The prince glowered at the angel. โ€œI donโ€™t see you combing the docks for him.โ€

โ€œNo need,โ€ Hunt drawled. โ€œWeโ€™re going to search for him without lifting a finger.โ€

Cormac sneered, โ€œUsing your lightning to survey the city?โ€ Hunt didnโ€™t fall for the taunt. โ€œNo. Using Declan Emmett.โ€

Leaving the males to their posturing, Bryce pulled out her phone and dialed. Jesiba answered on the second ring. โ€œWhat?โ€

Bryce smiled. Hunt half turned toward her at the sound of the sorceressโ€™s voice. โ€œGot any Death Marks lying around?โ€

Hunt hissed, โ€œYou canโ€™t be serious.โ€

Bryce ignored him as Jesiba answered, โ€œI might. Plan on taking a trip, Quinlan?โ€

โ€œI hear the Bone Quarterโ€™s gorgeous this time of year.โ€

Jesiba chuckled, a rolling, sultry sound. โ€œYou do amuse me every now and then.โ€ Pause. โ€œYou have to pay for this one, you know.โ€

โ€œSend the bill to my brother.โ€ Ruhn would have a conniption, but he could deal.

Another soft chuckle. โ€œI only have two. And itโ€™ll take until tomorrow morning for them to reach you.โ€

โ€œFine. Thanks.โ€

The sorceress said a shade gently, โ€œYou wonโ€™t find any traces of Danika left in the Bone Quarter, you know.โ€

Bryce tensed. โ€œWhat does that have to do with anything?โ€

โ€œI thought you were finally going to start asking questions about her.โ€

Bryce clenched the phone hard enough for the plastic to groan. โ€œWhat sort of questions?โ€ What the fuck did Jesiba know?

A low laugh. โ€œWhy donโ€™t you start by wondering why she was always poking around the gallery?โ€

โ€œTo see me,โ€ Bryce said through her teeth. โ€œSure,โ€ Jesiba said, and hung up.

Bryce swallowed hard and pocketed her phone.

Hunt was slowly shaking his head. โ€œWeโ€™re not going to the Bone Quarter.โ€

โ€œI agree,โ€ Cormac grumbled.

โ€œYouโ€™re not going at all,โ€ she said sweetly to Cormac. โ€œWeโ€™ll only have two fares, and Athalar is my plus-one.โ€ The prince bristled, but Bryce turned to Hunt. โ€œWhen the coins arrive tomorrow, I want to be readyโ€”have as much information as possible about where those Reapers came from.โ€

Hunt folded his wings behind him, feathers rustling. โ€œWhy?โ€

โ€œSo the Under-King and I can have an informed heart-to-heart.โ€

โ€œWhat was that shit Jesiba said about Danika?โ€ Hunt asked warily.

Bryceโ€™s mouth hardened into a thin line. Jesiba did and said nothing without reason. And while she knew sheโ€™d never get answers out of her old boss, at least this nudge was something to go on. โ€œTurns out weโ€™re going to have to ask Declan for an additional favor.โ€

That night, still reeling from the events of the day, Ruhn flipped through the channels on the TV until he found the sunball game, then set down the remote and swigged from his beer.

On the other end of the sectional couch in Bryceโ€™s apartment, Ithan Holstrom sat hunched over a laptop, Declan beside him with a laptop of his own. Bryce and Hunt stood behind the two, staring over their shoulders, the latterโ€™s face stormy.

Ruhn had told none of them, especially Bryce, about the conversation with his father.

Ithan typed away, then said, โ€œIโ€™m super rusty at this.โ€

Dec said without breaking his attention from the computer, โ€œIf you took Kirfnerโ€™s Intro to Systems and Matrices, youโ€™ll be fine.โ€

Ruhn often forgot that Dec was friendly with people other than him and Flynn. While none of them had attended college, Dec had struck up a years-long friendship with the ornery CCU computer science professor, often consulting the satyr on some of his hacking ventures.

โ€œHe gave me a B minus in that class,โ€ Ithan muttered.

โ€œFrom what he tells me, thatโ€™s practically an A plus,โ€ Declan said.

โ€œOkay, okay,โ€ Bryce said, โ€œany idea how long this is going to take?โ€

Declan threw her an exasperated look. โ€œYouโ€™re asking us to do two things at once, and neither is easy, so โ€ฆ a while?โ€

She scowled. โ€œHow many cameras are even at the Black Dock?โ€

โ€œA lot,โ€ Declan said, going back to his computer. He glanced to Holstromโ€™s laptop. โ€œClick that.โ€ He pointed to a mark on the screen that Ruhn couldnโ€™t see. โ€œNow type this code in to identify the footage featuring Reapers.โ€

How Dec managed to direct Ithan to comb through the footage around the Black Dock from earlier today whileย alsoย creating a program to search through years of video footage of Danika at the gallery was beyond Ruhn.

โ€œItโ€™s insane that you made this,โ€ Ithan said with no small bit of admiration.

โ€œAll in a dayโ€™s work,โ€ Dec replied, typing away. Pulling any footage from the gallery featuring Danika could take days, heโ€™d said. But at least the footage from the Black Dock would only take minutes.

Ruhn carefully asked Bryce, โ€œYou sure you trust Jesiba enough to follow this lead? Or at all?โ€

โ€œJesiba literally has a collection of books that could get her killed,โ€ Bryce said tartly. โ€œI trust that she knows how to stay out of โ€ฆ dangerous entanglements. And wouldnโ€™t shove me into one, either.โ€

โ€œWhy not tell you to look at the footage during the investigation this spring?โ€ Hunt asked.

โ€œI donโ€™t know. But Jesiba must have had a good reason.โ€ โ€œShe scares me,โ€ Ithan said, gaze fixed on the computer.

โ€œSheโ€™ll be happy to hear that,โ€ Bryce said, but her face was tight.

Whatโ€™s up?ย Ruhn asked her mind-to-mind.

Bryce frowned.ย You want the honest answer? Yeah.

She tucked a strand of hair behind an ear.ย I donโ€™t know how much more of this โ€œSurprise! Danika had a big secret!โ€ stuff I can take. It feels like โ€ฆ I donโ€™t even know. It feels like I never really knew her.

She loved you, Bryce. Thatโ€™s not in doubt.

Yeah, I know. But did Danika know about the Parthos booksโ€”or the other contraband tomesโ€”in the gallery?ย Jesiba made it sound like she did. Like she took a special interest in them.

You guys never talked about it?

Never. But Jesiba was always monitoring those cameras, so โ€ฆ maybe she saw something. Danika was down there without me plenty of times. Though Lehabah was usually there, too.

Ruhn noted the pain that filled his sisterโ€™s face at the fire spriteโ€™s name.

Weโ€™ll figure it out, Ruhn offered, and Bryce gave him a thankful smile in return.

โ€œDonโ€™t forget to keep an eye out for Emile around the docks,โ€ Bryce said to Ithan. Cormac had turned down the invitation to join them hereโ€” heโ€™d said he wanted to continue hunting for Emile on the ground.

โ€œI already added it to the program,โ€ Declan said. โ€œItโ€™ll flag any Reaper or any person whose facial features and build match the kidโ€™s.โ€ Dec had managed to pull a still from the security footage in the town of Servast the night Emile and Sofie had separated.

Ruhn again considered his sister, who was peering over Declanโ€™s shoulder with an intensity he recognized. She wouldnโ€™t let go of any of this.

Would she be able to teleport? Sheโ€™d told him that Cormac had agreed to try to teach her. And wouldnโ€™t that be something for the Autumn King to chew onโ€”Bryce plus teleporting plus Starborn power plus Starsword with crazy killing abilities plus Bryce magically outranking their father equaled

โ€ฆ

Ruhn kept his face neutral, tucking away thoughts of what a leveled-up Bryce might mean for the Fae.

Ithan finished typing in the code, and said without looking up, โ€œHilene is going to win this one.โ€

Ruhn checked the sunball game just beginning its first period. โ€œI thought Ionia was favored.โ€

Ithan stretched out his long legs, propping his bare feet on a cushioned stool Bryce had dragged over from the windows to be a temporary replacement for the coffee table. โ€œJason Regez has been off the last two games. I played with him at CCUโ€”I can tell when he starts to get in a funk. Heโ€™ll fuck it up for Ionia.โ€

Ruhn eyed Ithan. A few years off the sunball field hadnโ€™t gotten rid of the muscles on the male. Heโ€™d somehow gotten even bigger since then.

โ€œI hate Ionia anyway,โ€ Dec said. โ€œTheyโ€™re all swaggering assholes.โ€

โ€œPretty much.โ€ Ithan typed in the next line of code that Declan fed him. Bryce yawned audibly. โ€œCanโ€™t we watchย Veiled Love?โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ everyone answered.

Bryce elbowed Hunt. โ€œI thought we were a team.โ€

Hunt snorted. โ€œSunball always trumps reality shows.โ€ โ€œTraitor.โ€

Ithan snickered. โ€œI remember a time when you knew all the players on the CCU team and their stats, Bryce.โ€

โ€œIf you think that was because I was remotely interested in the actual sunball playing, youโ€™re delusional.โ€

Hunt laughed, some of the tightness on the angelโ€™s face lightening, and Ruhn smiled, despite the old ache in his heart. Heโ€™d missed out on those years with Bryce. They hadnโ€™t been speaking then. Those had been formative, pivotal years. He should have been there.

Ithan flipped Bryce off, but said to Declan, โ€œOkay, Iโ€™m in.โ€

Bryce scanned the screen. โ€œDo you see any Reapers crossing in boats?โ€ โ€œThis is showing nothing landing at the Black Dock at all today. Or last

night.โ€

Athalar asked, โ€œWhenโ€™s the last time any Reaper docked?โ€

Ithan kept typing, and they all waited, the only additional sound the swift clack of Declanโ€™s fingers on the keys of his computer. The wolf said, โ€œYesterday morning.โ€ He grimaced. โ€œThese two look familiar?โ€

Bryce and Ruhn scanned the image Ithan had pulled up. Ruhn had no idea why the fuck he bothered, since heโ€™d been unconscious, but a shiver went down his spine at the sagging, graying faces, the crepe-like skin so at odds with the jagged, sharp teeth that gleamed as the Reapers stepped from the boat. Both had pulled back their veils during the trip across the Istros, but tugged them over their faces as they stepped onto the Black Dock and drifted into the city.

Bryce said hoarsely, โ€œNo. Gods, theyโ€™re awful. But noโ€”those werenโ€™t the ones who attacked.โ€

โ€œThey might have been hiding out for a few days,โ€ Athalar said. โ€œThe Prince of the Pit only threatened us the other night, but he might have had them in place already.โ€

Ruhn had no idea how the angel spoke so calmly. If the Star-Eater had come toย himย and wanted to have a one-on-one chat, heโ€™d still be shitting his pants.

โ€œIโ€™m not seeing any kids lurking around the Black Dock, either,โ€ Ithan muttered, scanning the results. He twisted to Bryce. โ€œNo sign of Emile at all.โ€

Ruhn asked, โ€œPossible the kid took another way over? Maybe Danika found some sort of back door into the Bone Quarter.โ€

โ€œNot possible,โ€ Athalar said. โ€œOnly one way in, one way out.โ€

Ruhn bristled. โ€œThatโ€™s what weโ€™ve been taught, but has anyone ever tried to get in some other way?โ€

Athalar snorted. โ€œWhy would they want to?โ€

Ruhn glared at the angel but said, โ€œFair enough.โ€

Ithan stopped on an image. โ€œWhat about this one? He didnโ€™t take a boat over, just appeared from within the cityโ€”โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s the one,โ€ Bryce hissed, her face paling.

They all studied the stillโ€”the Reaper was half-turned to the camera as it entered the frame from a street near the Black Dock. He was taller than the others, but had the same grayish, soft face and those terrifying teeth.

Athalar whistled. โ€œYou sure know how to pick them, Quinlan.โ€

She scowled at the angel, but asked Dec, โ€œWhereโ€™s it coming from? Can you add its face to the program and run a search on the cityโ€™s footage?โ€

Declanโ€™s brows rose. โ€œYou know how longย thatย will take? Every camera in Lunathion? Itโ€™s why weโ€™re not even doing it for Emile. Itโ€™d take โ€ฆ I canโ€™t even calculate how long weโ€™d need.โ€

โ€œOkay, okay,โ€ Bryce said. โ€œBut can we โ€ฆ track this one for a while?โ€ She directed the last bit at Ithan, but the wolf shook his head.

โ€œThere must be a logical reason for thisโ€”like a gap in the camera coverage or somethingโ€”but that Reaper just seems to โ€ฆ appear.โ€

โ€œMicah had the kristallos stay in known camera gaps,โ€ Hunt said darkly. โ€œThese Reapers could know about them, too.โ€

Ithan pointed to the screen. โ€œRight here is where they first appear.

Before that, nothing.โ€

Ruhn pulled up a map of the city in his Aux app. โ€œThere should be a sewer entrance right behind them. Possible they came out of there?โ€

Ithan moved the footage around. โ€œThe cameras donโ€™t cover that sewer entrance.โ€

Bryce said, โ€œSo they probably knew itโ€™d be a good entry point. And itโ€™d make sense, given that they dragged us into the sewers.โ€ Where there were

no cameras at all.

โ€œLet me look around a little more,โ€ Ithan offered, and clicked away.

Athalar asked none of them in particular, โ€œYou think they were waiting for you, or for Emile?โ€

โ€œOr both?โ€ Ruhn asked. โ€œClearly, they wanted to stay hidden.โ€

โ€œBut did the Prince of the Pit send them, or did the Under-King?โ€ Athalar pushed.

โ€œGood thing weโ€™ve got a date with the being who can answer that,โ€ Bryce said.

Ruhn winced. Heโ€™d paid for the Death Marks that Jesiba had promised, but he wasnโ€™t happy about it. The thought of Bryce confronting the Under-King scared the Hel out of him.

โ€œWe need a plan for how we question him,โ€ Athalar warned her. โ€œI doubt heโ€™ll appreciate being questioned at all.โ€

โ€œHence the research,โ€ Bryce shot back, gesturing to the computer. โ€œYou think Iโ€™m stupid enough to go in and fling accusations around? If we can confirm whether or not those Reapers came directly from the Bone Quarter, weโ€™ll have steadier footing when we question him. And if we can get any hint of Emile actually going over to the Bone Quarter, then weโ€™ll have a good reason to ask him about that, too.โ€

Ithan added, โ€œConsidering what Tharion thinks Pippa Spetsos has done while hunting for Emile, Iโ€™m half hoping the kidโ€™s already in the Bone Quarter.โ€ He dragged a hand through his short brown hair. โ€œWhat she did to that selkie we found this morning was no joke.โ€

The wolf had filled them all in on the work heโ€™d done with Tharion earlierโ€”the tortured body they suspected had been left behind by the rebel fanatic.

Bryce pivoted and began pacing. Syrinx trotted at her heels, whining for a second dinner. Ruhn refrained from remarking on how similar the motion was to one heโ€™d seen their father do so many times in his study. Unable to stand it, he turned back to the sunball game.

Then Ithan said to Ruhn, picking up the thread of conversation from earlier, โ€œSee? Regez should have nailed that shot, but he balked. Heโ€™s second-guessing himself. Heโ€™s too deep in his head.โ€

Ruhn glanced sidelong at the male. โ€œYouโ€™ve never thought about playing again?โ€

A muscle ticked in Ithanโ€™s jaw. โ€œNo.โ€ โ€œYou miss it?โ€

โ€œNo.โ€

It was an obvious lie. Ruhn didnโ€™t fail to note that Bryceโ€™s eyes had softened.

But Ithan didnโ€™t so much as look in her direction. So Ruhn nodded to the wolf. โ€œIf you ever want to play a pickup game, me, Dec, and Flynn usually play with some of the Aux in Oleander Park over in Moonwood on Sundays.โ€

โ€œWhereโ€™s my invite?โ€ Bryce asked, scowling.

But Ithan said roughly, โ€œThanks. Iโ€™ll think about it.โ€

Hunt asked, โ€œIโ€™m assuming I donโ€™t get an invite, either, Danaan?โ€

Ruhn snorted at the angel. โ€œYou want an excuse for me to beat the shit out of you, Athalar, then Iโ€™m down.โ€

Athalar smirked, but his gaze drifted to Bryce, who was now staring over Declanโ€™s shoulder at the lightning-fast footage zooming by on his laptop. Footage of Danika from years ago.

She straightened suddenly. Cleared her throat. โ€œIโ€™m going down to the gym. Call me if you find anything.โ€ She aimed for her bedroom, presumably to change. Ruhn watched Hunt glance between her disappearing form and the sunball game. Weighing which one to follow.

It took Athalar all of thirty seconds to decide. He ducked into his room, saying he was going to change for the gym.

When Ruhn was alone with Dec and Ithan, his beer half-finished, Ithan said, โ€œConnor would have picked the game.โ€

Ruhn raised an eyebrow. โ€œI didnโ€™t realize it was a competition between them.โ€ Between a dead male and a living one.

Ithan just typed away, eyes darting over the screen.

And for some reason, Ruhn dared ask, โ€œWhat would you have picked?โ€ Ithan didnโ€™t hesitate. โ€œBryce.โ€
