Chapter no 86

House of Flame and Shadow (Crescent City, #3)

Ithan left Tharion recovering from the dose of the antidote the mer had taken. His reaction had been strong enough that the pipes in the House of Flame and Shadow had burst from the surge in his water magic. Hypaxia had her hands full, keeping her House in order.

So Ithan had come to the Den. Which was now โ€ฆ his.

Well, it would never be his, since it belonged to all the wolves who calledย it home, but it was his responsibility.

He found Perry in the guard booth again, doodling in a notebook. He rapped on the glass, drawing her attention, and at her wide eyes, he gave her a half smile.

โ€œHard at work or hardly working?โ€ he teased.

But she jumped to her feet, flinging open the door. โ€œSorry, I was justโ€”โ€

โ€œPer, itโ€™s me,โ€ he said, alarmed.

She straightened, standing at attention,ย as Sabine had liked. For fuckโ€™s sake. Heโ€™d deal with that later. For now โ€ฆ He sniffed, trying to read the subtle change in her scent. It remained that strawberries-and-cinnamon blend heโ€™d known his whole life, but with the antidote โ€ฆ He couldnโ€™t put a finger on it. It had been so strong, right in those moments after sheโ€™d taken the antidote, yet now it had dimmed.

There wasnโ€™t time to ponderย it, to wonder why an Omega once again stood before him. Ithan peered through the open gates of the Den. โ€œWhere is everyone?โ€

Perry shifted on her feet. โ€œThey, uh โ€ฆ they left.โ€

Ithan slowly blinked. โ€œWhat do you mean they left?โ€ Had the River Queen started her evacuation already? Heโ€™d come here to inform everyone that it might be best to lie low in the Blue Court for a few weeks, but maybe sheย had already gotten a message to them.

โ€œWhat happened shook them,โ€ Perry said. โ€œTheyโ€™re loyal to you, Ithan, but theyโ€™re worried. They all headed out of town. Said they wanted to wait until after the new year to see how things, um โ€ฆ turned out.โ€ In a fewย months.

Ithan weighed the fear in her eyes. Not for him, but โ€ฆ โ€œAnd whereโ€™s your sister?โ€ he asked quietly. The wolf in him began bristling,ย snarling for the opponent he knew was coming.

โ€œAmelie led them out,โ€ Perry said, throat bobbing. โ€œI think she wanted to make sure everyone got to where theyโ€™re going.โ€ But her eyes dropped to the pavement.

โ€œSure,โ€ Ithan said. Perry shifted on her feet. โ€œWhy didnโ€™t you go?โ€

โ€œSomeone had to stay to tell you,โ€ she mumbled, a blush creeping over her cheeks.

โ€œI have a hard time believing your sisterย made you stay.โ€

โ€œShe wanted me to go, but โ€ฆ I couldnโ€™t abandon the Den. They moved the Prime into the lobbyโ€”I think some wanted to stay for the Sailing, but the spooked ones wanted to leave. It didnโ€™t feel right to abandon his body there. Alone.โ€ Tears gleamed in her emerald eyes, genuine grief for the old wolf.

Any aggression rising in Ithan stalled out at the pain, the loyalty in her face.ย He squeezed her shoulder. โ€œThanks for staying, Per.โ€

She followed him into the Den, hitting an interior button to shut the gates behind them. Ithan paused in the grassy meadow, watching the trees of the park bend in the cool breeze. The blood had been cleaned away from the buildingโ€™s entrance. The bodies of Sabine and the Astronomerโ€”

โ€œI dumped them in the sewer,โ€ Perry said with quiet rage,ย reading Ithanโ€™s glance toward where the corpses had been. โ€œThey donโ€™t deserve a Sailing. Especially Sabine.โ€

Surprise sparked in him at the normally peaceful wolfโ€™s act of defiance, but he nodded. โ€œRotting in the shit of the city seems like a good place for Sabine to wind up,โ€ he said, and Perry huffed a laugh. It wasnโ€™t real amusement. They were both far beyond that.

โ€œWhere did you go?โ€ Perryย asked, tentatively enough that he knew she was still feeling him out. As a friend, and as her Alpha and Prime. Learning how much she could push.

โ€œItโ€™s a long story,โ€ he said. โ€œBut I came back here to get everyone to safety.โ€ He explained about the River Queen and the Blue Court.

โ€œBut now,โ€ he finished, โ€œI have to head to the Eternal City.โ€

Perry studied him, clearly understanding more thanย heโ€™d said. โ€œSo weโ€™re going up against the Asteri?โ€

โ€œWeย arenโ€™t doing anything,โ€ he said. โ€œIโ€™m going up against them.โ€

โ€œBut youโ€™re Prime,โ€ she insisted. โ€œYou speak for all Valbaran wolves. Your choices are our choices. If you stand against the Asteri,ย weย stand against the Asteri.โ€

โ€œThen disavow me,โ€ he said. โ€œBut Iโ€™m going.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s not what Iโ€™m saying,โ€ she said. โ€œI donโ€™t disagree with youโ€”thingsย have to change, and change for the better. But the wolves are scattered at the moment. At vacation homes, on trips โ€ฆ too far to reach the Blue Court before you go off to the Eternal City.โ€

โ€œSo?โ€

โ€œSo get the word out to them before you go. Give them a few hours to find shelter, either by getting to the Blue Court, or by finding somewhere in the wilds to lie low. The second the Asteri see you,ย the Prime, standing against them in any capacity, theyโ€™ll go after the wolves to punish you. And after what happened at the Meadows โ€ฆโ€ Her eyes flooded with pain. โ€œI donโ€™t think thereโ€™s any atrocity they wouldnโ€™t commit.โ€

Ithan opened his mouth to object. He had to get that bullet and antidote to Bryceย now. It might even be too late already.

But he couldnโ€™t live with one more wolf death on hisย conscience.ย And if a single pup were harmed because he hadnโ€™t given them time to hide โ€ฆ

โ€œThree hours,โ€ Ithan agreed. โ€œYou know how to send encrypted messages?โ€

Perry nodded.

โ€œThen start getting the word out.โ€ He looked to the building lobby beyond the pillars and the stairs up to it. โ€œAnd Iโ€™ll start digging a grave.โ€

โ€œA grave?โ€ Perry protested. โ€œBut the Sailingโ€”โ€

โ€œThere are no more Sailings,โ€ย Ithan said quietly. โ€œThe Under-King is dead.โ€

He was met with stunned silence. Then Perry said, โ€œButโ€”the Bone Quarter.โ€

โ€œIs a lie. All of it.โ€ Ithan gestured to the phone already in her hand. โ€œGet the word out, then weโ€™ll talk. Iโ€™ll tell you everything I know.โ€

Perry held his stare, her own full of worry and shock and determination. Then she began typing into her phone. โ€œIโ€™m glad, Ithan,โ€ sheย said quietly, โ€œthat youโ€™re Prime.โ€

That makes one of us,ย he almost said, but just nodded his thanks.

Tharion shoved the last gun into a rucksack and turned to where Hypaxia was nesting vials of the antidote into a satchel. โ€œHow many do you have?โ€ he asked.

Water whispered in his ears, his heart, his veins. A steady flow of magic, as if a raging river coursed through him. Half a thought andย itโ€™d be unleashed.

โ€œTwo dozen, give or take a few,โ€ she said quietly. โ€œNot enough.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re going to need entire factories dedicated to getting it out there,โ€ Tharion said.

She handed him the bag. โ€œHere. Donโ€™t jostle it too much on the trip. Athalarโ€™s lightning holds them togetherโ€”a little agitation can destabilize the doses to the point where they wonโ€™t work.โ€

He angled his head. โ€œYouโ€™reย not coming?โ€ He planned to make his way to the Asteriโ€™s palace itselfโ€”the most likely place for aย confrontation between Bryce and the Asteri. Gods, the very notion of it was insane. Suicidal. But for his friends, for Midgard, heโ€™d go, antidote in tow.

Hypaxiaโ€™s eyes gleamed with that greenish light. โ€œNoโ€”Iโ€™m staying here.โ€

Tharion weighed the heaviness in that one word and took a seat on theย edge of Rogaโ€™s desk. The sorceress was off handling some squabble between vampyrs and city medwitches over the vampyrsโ€™ raid of a blood bank, apparently. โ€œWhy?โ€

โ€œSomeone has to deal with all the broken pipes in this House,โ€ Hypaxia teased.

Tharion blushed slightly. His eruption after ingesting the antidote would take a long while to live down. But there had been so muchย powerโ€”all of a sudden,ย heโ€™d been overflowing with water, and it was music and rage and destruction and life. But he said, โ€œCome on, Pax. Tell me why.โ€

Her gaze lowered to her hands. โ€œBecause if all goes poorly over there, someone needs to remain here. To help Lunathion.โ€

โ€œIf it goes poorly over there, everyone is fucked anyway,โ€ he said. โ€œYou being here, Iโ€™m sorry to say, wonโ€™t make much of a difference.โ€

โ€œI wantย to keep making the antidote,โ€ she added. โ€œWe need a better way to stabilize it. I want to start on itย now.โ€

He looked at his friendโ€”really looked at her. โ€œYou okay?โ€

Her eyes, so changed since taking Flame and Shadowโ€™s throne for herself, dipped to the floor. โ€œNo.โ€

โ€œPaxโ€”โ€

โ€œBut I have no choice,โ€ she said, and squared her shoulders. She nodded to the doors. โ€œYou should get your wife and go.โ€

โ€œIs that a note of disapproval I detect?โ€

Hypaxia smiled gently. โ€œNo. Well, I disapprove of much of what led you to marry her, but not โ€ฆ the marriage itself.โ€

โ€œYeah, yeah, get in line to lecture me.โ€

โ€œI think Sathia might be good for you, Tharion.โ€

โ€œOh?โ€

Her smile turned secretive. โ€œYes.โ€

Tharion gave her a smile of his own. โ€œKnock โ€™em dead, Pax.โ€

โ€œHopefully not literally,โ€ Hypaxia saidย with a wink.

Grinning despite himself, Tharion exited Rogaโ€™s office. Heโ€™d left Sathia in a small guest room to wash up and rest, though they both knew that no amount of rest would prepare her for the insanity they were about to face.

Heโ€™d offered to send her down to the Blue Court, but sheโ€™d refused. And dropping her off in Avallen would have taken them too far out of their way. So sheโ€™d beย coming with him.

Tharion knocked on the door to the guest room and didnโ€™t wait for her to reply before he opened it.

The room was empty. There was only a note on the bed, laced with her lingering scent. Tharion read it once. Then a second time, before it really set in.

I canโ€™t leave Colin in her hands. I hope you understand.

Good luck. And thank you for all youโ€™ve done for me.

Sathia hadย left him. Thatโ€™s what theย thank youย at the end was. It was fittingโ€”heโ€™d done worse to the River Queenโ€™s daughter, and yet โ€ฆ

Tharion carefully laid the note back on the bed. He didnโ€™t blame her. It was her choice to go save her ex-boyfriend from being a drugged-out assassinโ€”and a noble choice, at that. No, he didnโ€™t blame her at all.

It was better she didnโ€™t come with him to the Eternal City,ย in any case. Sheโ€™d be safer that way.

Still, Tharion looked at the note on the bed for a long, long moment.

And though he knew he was heading off to challenge the Asteri, likely to die in the attempt โ€ฆ as Tharion left the House of Flame and Shadow, then Lunathion itself, he couldnโ€™t stop thinking about her.

The video Hunt and Bryce had recorded was due to go out at any moment. Ruhn was soย fucking proud of his sister. She knew how to make the most of a bad hand.

That moment came soon after midnight, with a stroke of a key from Declan.

And now, sitting on the floor of the windowless bedroom in the safe house Lidia had procured for them, Ruhn peered over at where she sat beside him and said, โ€œJust a few hours until dawn, then weโ€™ll make our move.โ€

Lidia stared at nothing, kneeย bobbing nervously. Sheโ€™d spoken little since theyโ€™d gotten the news of her sonsโ€™ abduction. And though Ruhn had been aching to touch her in the quiet moments, heโ€™d kept his hands to himself. She had other things on her mind.

โ€œI never should have gone back onto theย Depth Charger,โ€ Lidia said at last.

โ€œIf Pollux was able to learn about your kids,โ€ Ruhn objected, โ€œhe would have found out whetherย you were on the ship or off it.โ€

โ€œYou should have let me die in the Haldren Sea,โ€ she said. โ€œThen heโ€™d have had no reason to go after them.โ€

โ€œHey.โ€ Ruhn grabbed her hand, squeezing tight. She dragged her gaze over to him. โ€œNone of this is your fault.โ€

She shook her head, and Ruhn gently touched her face. โ€œYou are allowed to feel whatever you need to right now. But come dawn, when we walk outย of here, youโ€™ll have to bury it and become the Hind again. One last time. Without the Hind, weโ€™re not going to get into that palace.โ€

She scanned his gaze, and leaned forward, her brow pressing against his.

Ruhn breathed in her scent, taking it deep into his bodyโ€”but he found it already marking him. It had been there, hidden in him, since that first time.

โ€œCan I โ€ฆโ€ She swallowed hard. โ€œCanย we โ€ฆโ€

โ€œTell me what you want,โ€ he said, kissing her cheek.

She pulled back, and slid a hand against his jaw. โ€œYou. I want you.โ€

โ€œYou sure?โ€ She had so much burdening her. With her sons in the Asteriโ€™s hands, he didnโ€™t blame her ifโ€”

โ€œI need to not think for a while,โ€ she said, then added, โ€œand โ€ฆย I need to touch you.โ€ She traced her fingers over his lips. โ€œYour real body.โ€

He closed his eyesย against her touch. โ€œTell me what you want, Lidia.โ€

Her lips grazed his, and he shuddered. โ€œI want youโ€”all of you. In me.โ€

A grin spread across Ruhnโ€™s face. โ€œHappy to oblige.โ€

He followed her lead, letting her set the pace. Each kiss, he answered with his own. Let her show him where she wanted him to touch, to lick, to savor.

Thankfully, the parts where she wanted him toย reallyย focus were theย ones Ruhn had been especially interested in. The taste of her sweetness on his tongue had him nearly coming in his pantsโ€”and that was before her breathy moans filled his ears like the most beautiful music heโ€™d ever heard.

โ€œRuhn,โ€ she said, but didnโ€™t give him the order to halt, so he kept working her in long strokes of his tongue, wishing to the gods he still had his lip piercing, knowing heย could have driven her to distraction with itโ€”but there would be time later.

She arched off the bed, and her orgasm sent him writhing, desperate for any sensation against his cock.

She put him out of his misery a moment later, her eyes nearly pure flame as she unzipped him, and her slender hand wrapped around himโ€”

He bucked against her first stroke, and was about to start begging when she pushedย him back onto the bed. When she climbed over him, straddling him, and that hand around his cock guided him to her entrance.

Ruhn slid his hands into Lidiaโ€™s golden hair, the silken strands spilling through his fingers, and held her gaze as she sank down onto him.

He gritted his teeth at the warmth and tightness of her, panting through the rush of pleasure, the sense of perfection, the flawlessย fitโ€”

She settled against him, seated fully, and her chest rose and fell so rapidly that Ruhn grabbed her hands, pressing kisses to herย fingertips. Her eyes fluttered shut, and then her hips movedโ€”and there was nothing more to say, to do, as she rode him.

He lifted his hips, and her moans heightened. He wished he could devour the sound. He made do by rising up, kissing her thoroughly, her legsย wrapping around his middle. It plunged him impossibly deeper, and he lost it. Went positively feral at being so far inside her, at the smell and taste of herโ€”

Lidia met him stroke for stroke, met his savagery with her own, teeth grazing his neck, his chest. Every thrust had him rubbing an inner wall, and fuck, he was going toย dieย from this pleasureโ€”

Then her head tipped back, and her delicateย muscles tightened around him as she came, sending him spiraling after her. He pounded into her through it, that feral part of him relishing spilling into her, and she wasย hisย and he was hers, and there was a word for it, but it eluded him.

She stilled, and Ruhn took her weight as she leaned against him, their bodies now a tangle of arms and legs, his cock still buried to the hilt. Her every breathย pushed against him, and he stroked his fingers down the column of her spine, over and over.

She was here. He was here.

For as long as Urd would allow them to be.

Lidia lay in Ruhnโ€™s arms as the hours passed, sleep eluding her.

It had been everything sheโ€™d wanted, needed, this joining with him. Sheโ€™d never felt so safe, so cherished. And yet her sons remained in the Asteriโ€™s hands. In Polluxโ€™sย hands.

The hours dripped by. Lidia shut down the part of her that cataloged every possible torment that might be inflicted on Brann and Actaeon. The torments that she herself had inflicted on so many others.

Maybe this was her punishment for that. Her punishment for so many things.

Ruhn stirred, and Lidia nestled closer to him, breathing in his scent, savoring the strength of his body aroundย hers.

And tried not to think about tomorrow.
