Chapter no 84

House of Flame and Shadow (Crescent City, #3)

โ€œI donโ€™t take orders from former witch-queens,โ€ the Viper Queen said. Her guards didnโ€™t back down an inch. But Colin McCarthyโ€™s gun was definitely trembling, like he was fighting the order with everything he had.

โ€œWhat about from the Head of the House of Flame and Shadow?โ€ Hypaxia countered. Tharionโ€™s knees gave out abruptly at the greenish light that flared in her eyes.

Sathia caughtย him around the waist, grunting as she held him up.

Tharion whispered, โ€œPax?โ€

But his friendโ€”this female who had been his friend from the moment theyโ€™d met each other at the Summit, who always seemed to see the real male beneath his veneer of charmโ€”only glowered at the Viper Queen. โ€œYou touch him, or his friend, and you bring down the wrath of Flame and Shadow upon you.โ€

Holstrom stepped upย to her side, brimming with powerโ€”withย magic, cold and foreignโ€”and added, โ€œAnd the wrath of all Valbaran Wolves.โ€

There was only one person who could claim that.

The male before him was Prime. There was no doubt about it. But that strange power rippling from him โ€ฆ what the Hel wasย that?

The Viper Queen stared long and hard at Ithan, then at Hypaxia.

โ€œPower shift,โ€ she murmured, pulling a cigaretteย from her jumpsuit pocket and putting it in her mouth. โ€œInteresting.โ€ The cigarette bobbed with the word, and she lit it, taking a long drag. She fixed her snakeโ€™s eyes on Tharion. โ€œYour bounty still stands.โ€

โ€œDrop the bounty,โ€ Ithan ordered, pure Alpha echoing in his voice.

โ€œI wonโ€™t forgive or forget what Ketos did to me and mine. But heโ€™ll walk out of here todayโ€”Iโ€™ll allow that much.โ€

Hypaxiaย gave her a look dripping with disdain. โ€œYouย will walk out of here today.ย Weย will allow that much.โ€

The Viper Queen took another long drag of her cigarette and blew the air toward Hypaxia. โ€œGive a witch a scrap of true power and it goes right to her pretty little head.โ€

โ€œFuck you,โ€ Ithan snarled.

But the Viper Queen stepped back into the alley, whistling sharply to her assassins before stridingย away. They turned as one and marched after her.

Colin McCarthy didnโ€™t so much as look back.

โ€œWhat theย fuck?โ€ Tharion exploded at Ithan, at Hypaxia. The Prime of the Valbaran Wolves and the Head of the House of Flame and Shadow. โ€œWhat happened?โ€

โ€œWhat happened toย you?โ€ Ithan countered. โ€œWhere are the others? Is Bryce here?โ€

โ€œBryce? Noโ€”sheโ€™s in Nena. She โ€ฆโ€ Now wasnโ€™t the time for a catch-up.

But Ithan said, โ€œNena?โ€ He dragged his hands through his hair. โ€œFuck.โ€

โ€œWhy?โ€ Tharion asked.

Hypaxia said gravely, โ€œWe need to get to Bryce. Immediately.โ€

โ€œOkay,โ€ Tharion said. โ€œIโ€™ll see if I can reach her or Athalar.โ€

Hypaxia and Ithan began walking, and Tharion followed, Sathia a few feet behind. When the door to the House of Flame and Shadow loomed before them, Hypaxia lifted a hand andย it swung open silently. Hers to command.

Ithan walked right in. But Tharion at last mastered his shock enough to ask Hypaxia, โ€œHow did you wind upโ€”โ€

โ€œItโ€™s a long story,โ€ she said, tucking a dark curl behind her ear. โ€œBut get inside first. Itโ€™s the only safe place in this city.โ€

Tharion glanced back at Sathia, who was pale-faced at the open door before them. โ€œGive me a minute,โ€ he said, andย Hypaxia nodded and walked into the gloom.

โ€œHypaxia is a friend,โ€ Tharion explained softly to Sathia. โ€œNo harm will come to you in there.โ€

Sathia lifted her gaze, bleak and despairing, to his face. Like sheโ€™d seen a ghost.

And maybe she had. โ€œIt was my Ordeal.โ€ Her lips were so, so white. โ€œI only realized it afterward,โ€ she murmured. โ€œAfter Colin โ€ฆ left. Losing him was my Ordeal.โ€

Tharion laidย a gentle hand on her back, surprised by the strange tightness in his gut, and eased her toward the doorway. โ€œIโ€™m sorry,โ€ he said, and led his wife into the gloom.

It was all he could offer her.

โ€œThe reception in Nena is shitโ€”thereโ€™s some weird interference happening right now,โ€ Tharion announced. They stood in Jesiba Rogaโ€™s office, of all places. โ€œBut from the few words I managed to make out,ย theyโ€™re heading for the Eternal City immediately.โ€

โ€œGood,โ€ Holstrom said, pacing in front of Rogaโ€™s desk. โ€œThatโ€™s what Jesiba told me earlier. But where do we rendezvous?โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s the tough part,โ€ Tharion admitted, sliding into one of the chairs. Sathia sat quietly in the other one, lost in thought. โ€œThe reception cut off before we could get to that. I tried calling him back, and Quinlan, andย her parents, but โ€ฆ nothing.โ€

โ€œMaybe they got the Rift open,โ€ Hypaxia mused. โ€œMagic pouring into Midgard from Hel could be disrupting the connection. Demons cause power outages sometimes with their presence. Imagine what a lot of them all at once might do.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s possible, but doesnโ€™t change the issue at hand,โ€ Holstrom said. The wolf had changedโ€”somehow, in the span of a day, heโ€™dย gone fromย lost to focused. From lone wolf to Prime. Tharion had gotten a vague story out of him about facing Sabine, and Hypaxia taking on the Under-King to become Head of the House of Flame and Shadow, but even beyond that, they seemed like theyโ€™d leveled up. Majorly.

Especially Ithan. Even the most powerful of wolves only had shifting abilities and super strengthโ€”not actualย magic. And yet Holstrom, suddenly,ย had the ability to wield ice. Like the power had been locked in his bloodline all this time. But Tharion put aside the thought as Holstrom added, โ€œWe need to figure out how to link up with them.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m sure if the Rift is open, weโ€™ll see them coming a mile off,โ€ Tharion said.

โ€œWe need to find Hunt and Bryceย beforeย they enter into any kind of confrontation with the Asteri,โ€ Ithan insisted. Heย picked up a vial of clear liquid from the desk. โ€œHypaxia found a cure for the Asteriโ€™s parasite. We need to distribute it to everyone we can.โ€

Tharion blinked in shock. Sathia stopped her brooding to listen.

Then Ithan pulled out a long, dark bullet from his pocket. โ€œAnd we need to get this to Bryce as soon as possible.โ€

โ€œWhat is that?โ€ Tharion asked as a strange, ancient sort of power thrummedย from the black bullet.

Ithanโ€™s face was grim. โ€œA gift from the dead.โ€
