Chapter no 79

House of Flame and Shadow (Crescent City, #3)

โ€œNah,โ€ Ruhn said into the phone as he and Lidia once again wended through the sewers, โ€œthey werenโ€™t at the triariiโ€™s private barracks. We waited for hours, but theyโ€™re deserted. No one came or went. From the look of Isaiahโ€™s and Naomiโ€™s rooms, no oneโ€™s been there for days.โ€

Lidia trudged ahead, neck bent forward as she checked a burner phone sheโ€™d brought with her from theย Depth Chargerโ€”years ago, it seemed.

โ€œSo what do we do?โ€ Flynn asked. โ€œKeep waiting? Dec was able to hack into the Auxโ€™s computers while I scouted around the area, but he found nothing about their movements, either. It doesnโ€™t seem like the Aux even knows theyโ€™re gone.โ€ With the Asteri out to punish anyone caught associating with them, it had been safest to observe the Aux from a distance, rather than directlyย talk to anyone. Not to mention the risk of being sold out to the Asteri by any enterprising sorts.

Ruhn considered. โ€œIf Isaiah and Naomi are missing, Celestina probably wants to keep their absence unnoticed.โ€

In the background, Declan said, โ€œYou think she killed them?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s possible,โ€ Ruhn said as Flynn switched him to speakerphone. โ€œWeโ€™re going to circle back there tomorrow. See if we canย pick up anything else. You two be on the lookout for any sign of them. Check the squares where they do the crucifixions.โ€

โ€œFuck,โ€ Flynn said.

โ€œIโ€™ll try to access the security footage from the Comitium,โ€ Dec volunteered. โ€œMaybe thereโ€™s something there that can point us in the right direction.โ€

Ruhn sighed. โ€œBe careful. Letโ€™s rendezvous at sunsetโ€”the northeastern corner of the intersection justย past the shooting range.โ€

โ€œCopy,โ€ Flynn and Dec said, and hung up.

Ruhn and Lidia walked another block or so in the reeking quiet before he said, โ€œYou lulled me to sleep with a story once. About a witch who turned into a monster.โ€

โ€œWhat of it?โ€ She glanced sidelong at him.

โ€œIs it a real story, or did you make it up?โ€

โ€œIt was a story my mother told me,โ€ she said softly. โ€œThe only story I rememberย her telling me as a child before she โ€ฆ let me go.โ€

Heโ€™d been about to ask if the similarities between the evil prince and Pollux, the kind knight and himself, had been meant prophetically, but at the sadness in her voice โ€ฆ โ€œIโ€™m really sorry you went through that, Lidia. I canโ€™t imagine doing that to a child. The thought of letting my own kid go into the arms of a strangerโ€”โ€

โ€œI did it, though,โ€ย she said, staring ahead at nothing. โ€œWhat my mother did to me, I did exactly the same thing to my sons.โ€

His heart ached at the pain and guilt in her voice. โ€œYou entrusted your sons to a loving familyโ€”โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t know that. I had no idea who they were going to be living with.โ€

โ€œBut the alternative was taking them with you.โ€

โ€œMaybe I should have. Maybe I should have run into the wilds and hiddenย forever with them.โ€

โ€œWhat kind of life would that have been? You gave them a real life, and a happy one, on theย Depth Charger.โ€

โ€œA true mother would haveโ€”โ€

โ€œYouย areย a true mother,โ€ he said, and grabbed her hand, turning her to face him. โ€œLidia, you made an impossible choiceโ€”youย decided to protect your children, even if it meant you wouldnโ€™t see them grow up. Fuck, if that doesnโ€™t make you aย true mother, then I donโ€™t know what does.โ€

Pain rippled across her face, and he wrapped his arms around her as she leaned against his chest. โ€œThey were the one thing that kept me going,โ€ she said. โ€œThrough every horror, it was just knowing that they were there, and safe, and that my choices were keeping them that way.โ€

He slid a hand down her back, luxuriating in the feel of her, offering upย whatever comfort he could. They stood there for long minutes, just holding each other.

โ€œI told you before,โ€ she said against his chest, โ€œthat you remind me that Iโ€™m alive.โ€

He kissed the top of her head in answer, her golden hair silky against his mouth.

โ€œFor a long time, I wasnโ€™t,โ€ she said. โ€œI did my work as the Hind, as Daybrightโ€”all to keep my sons safe and do what I thought was right.ย But I felt nothing. I was essentially a wraith most days, occupying a shell of a body. But then I met you, and it was like I was back in my body again. Like I was โ€ฆ awake.โ€ She pulled back, scanning his face. โ€œI donโ€™t think Iโ€™d ever been truly awake,โ€ she said, โ€œuntil I met you.โ€

He smiled down at her, his heart too full for words. So he kissed her, gently, lovingly.

She slid her hand into hisย as they continued onward. But Ruhn paused her again, long enough to tip her head back and kiss her once more. โ€œI know we have some shit to sort out still,โ€ he said against her mouth, โ€œbut โ€ฆ girlfriend, lover, whatever you want to be, Iโ€™m all in.โ€

Her lips curved against his in a smile. โ€œI thank Urd every single day that Cormac asked you to be my contact.โ€

He pulled away, grinning. โ€œI still oweย you a beer.โ€

โ€œIf we get through this, Ruhn,โ€ she said, โ€œIโ€™ll buyย youย a beer.โ€

Ruhn grinned again, and slid an arm around her waist as they walked on into the gloom. They strode in warm, companionable quiet for several blocks before Lidiaโ€™s phone buzzed, and sheย pulled it from her pocket to glance at the screen. โ€œItโ€™s from theย Depth Charger,โ€ she said, and paused to open the message.

He watchedย her eyes dart over the screenโ€”then halt. Her hands shook.

โ€œPollux,โ€ Lidia breathed, and Ruhn stilled. Her eyes lifted to his, and pure panic filled them as she whispered, โ€œHeโ€™s taken my sons.โ€

Hunt didnโ€™t let himself dwell on itโ€”the unholy majesty that was Bryce wearing the Mask. On what sheโ€™d been able to do to the Harpy.

He faced Celestina, Isaiah and Naomi behind her, all clad in heavyย winter gear. Isaiahโ€™s and the Governorโ€™s white wings were nearly invisible against the snow. All their faces, however, were taut with shock. โ€œWhat are you doing here?โ€ Hunt said.

โ€œWhat is that?โ€ Naomi breathed, ignoring his question, eyes on the golden object in Bryceโ€™s hands.

โ€œDeath,โ€ Isaiah answered, face ashen. โ€œThat mask โ€ฆ itโ€™s death.โ€

Hunt demanded again, โ€œWhat are you doing here?โ€

Isaiahโ€™sย eyes shot to Huntโ€™s. โ€œWeโ€™ve been tracking thatย thing.โ€ He gestured to the pile of clothes that had been the resurrected Harpy moments before. โ€œCelestinaโ€™s old contacts up here reported that the guard station at the wall had been attacked by some new terror, so we all raced up here, fearing it was something from Helโ€”โ€

โ€œWhy not send a legion?โ€ Hunt asked, eyeing the two angels whoโ€™d once been hisย closest companions. โ€œWhy come yourselves?โ€

โ€œBecause the Asteri ordered us to stand down,โ€ Naomi said. โ€œBut someone still had to stop this carnage.โ€

Hunt met Celestinaโ€™s eyes, the Archangelโ€™s flawless face a mask of stone. โ€œGoing off-leash, huh?โ€

Temper sparked in her gaze. โ€œI regret what I did to you and yours, Hunt Athalar, but it was necessary toโ€”โ€

โ€œSpare me,โ€ Hunt snapped. โ€œYou fuckingย betrayed us to the Asteriโ€”โ€

โ€œHunt,โ€ Isaiah said, holding up a hand, โ€œlook, thereโ€™s a lot of bad blood hereโ€”โ€

โ€œBad blood?โ€ Hunt exploded. โ€œI fucking went to theย dungeonsย because of her!โ€ He pointed at the Governor. Bryce moved closer to him, a comforting presence at his side. He gestured to his forehead, barely visible with his gear. โ€œI have thisย haloย on my fucking head again because of her!โ€

Celestina just stood there, shivering. โ€œAs I said, I regret what I did. It has cost me more than you know.โ€ She seemed to blink back tears. โ€œHypaxia has โ€ฆ ended things between us.โ€

โ€œWhat, your girlfriend didnโ€™t like that youโ€™re a two-faced snake?โ€ Hunt said.

โ€œHunt,โ€ Bryce murmured, but he didnโ€™t fucking care.

โ€œYou were supposed to beย good,โ€ Hunt said, voice breaking. โ€œYou were supposed to beย the good Archangel. And youโ€™re even worse than Micah.โ€ He spat, and it turned to ice before it could hit the snow. โ€œAt least he made it clear when he was fucking someone over.โ€

His lightning thrashed in his veins, looking for a way out.

โ€œHunt,โ€ Naomi said, โ€œwhat the Governor did was fucked up, butโ€”โ€

โ€œShe went against Asteri orders to be here,โ€ Isaiah finished. โ€œLetโ€™s get out of the cold andย talkโ€”โ€

โ€œIโ€™m done fucking talking,โ€ Hunt said, and his power stirred. โ€œI amย doneย with Archangels and your fuckingย bullshit.โ€

His lightning hissed along the snow. And as his vision flashed, he knew lightning forked across his eyes.

Celestina held up her gloved hands. โ€œI want no quarrel with you, Athalar.โ€

โ€œToo bad,โ€ Hunt said, and lightning skittered over his tongue. โ€œI want one with you.โ€

He didnโ€™t give any further warning before he hurled his power at the Archangel. He gave everything, yet it wasnโ€™t enough. His power choked at its limits, restrained by the halo.

A leash to hold demons in check.

It hadnโ€™t worked on the princes. Heโ€™d be damned if he allowed it to keep working on him.

Hunt let his power build and build and build. The snow around him melted away.

Apollion had givenย his essence, his Helfire, to Hunt. And if that made him a son of Hel, so be it.

Hunt closed his eyes, and saw it thereโ€”the black band of the halo, imprinted across his very soul. Its scrolling vine of thorns. The spell to contain him.

Everyone knew the enslavement spell couldnโ€™t be undone. Hunt had never even tried. But he was done playing by the Asteriโ€™s rules. By anyoneโ€™s rules.

Hunt reachedย a mental hand toward the black thorns of the halo. Wreathed his fingers in lightning, in Helfire, in the power that was his and only his.

And sliced through it.

The thorns of the halo shivered and bled. Black ink dripped down, dissolving into nothing, gobbled up by the power that was now surging in him, rising upโ€”

Hunt opened his eyes to see Isaiah gaping at him in fear and awe. The halo stillย marred his friendโ€™s brow.

No more.

Knowing where it was, how to destroy it, made it easier. Hunt reached out a tendril of his power for Isaiah, and before his friend could recoil, he sliced a line through the halo on his brow.

Isaiah hissed, staggering back. A roaring, raging wind rose from his feet as his halo, too, crumbled away from his brow.

Celestina was looking between them, terror starkย on her face. โ€œThatโ€™s notโ€”thatโ€™s notโ€”โ€

โ€œI suggest you run,โ€ Hunt said, his voice as frozen as the wind that bit at their faces.

But Celestina straightened. Held her ground. And with bravery he didnโ€™t expect, she said, โ€œWhy areย youย here?โ€

As if heโ€™d be distracted by the question, as if itโ€™d keep her fate at bayโ€”

Bryce answered for him. โ€œTo open the Northern Rift to Hel.โ€

Naomi whirled on Bryceย and said, โ€œWhat?โ€

Isaiah, too stunned at his haloโ€™s removal to pay much attention to the conversation, was staring at his handsโ€”as if he could see the unleashed power they now commanded.

Celestina shook her head. โ€œYouโ€™ve lost your minds.โ€ She planted her feet, and white, shining power glowed around her. โ€œYou want to fight me, Athalar, go ahead. But youโ€™re not opening the Rift.โ€

โ€œOh, I thinkย we are,โ€ Hunt said, and launched his lightning at her.

The world ruptured as it collided with a wall of her power, and Hunt poured more lightning in, snow melting away, the very stone beneath them buckling and warping as his lightning struck and struck and struckโ€”

โ€œAthalar!โ€ Naomi shouted. โ€œWhat the fuckโ€”โ€

Celestina blasted out her power, a wall of glowing wind.

Hunt snapped his lightningย through it. He was done with the Archangels. With their hierarchies. Done withโ€”

Isaiah stepped into the fray, hands up.

โ€œStop,โ€ he said, and power glowed in his friendโ€™s eyes. โ€œAthalar, stop.โ€

โ€œShe deserves to dieโ€”every fucking Archangel deserves to die for what they do to us,โ€ Hunt said through his teeth. But it registered, suddenly, that Bryce was no longer by his side.

She was running backย toward the Rift, her star blazing. So brightโ€”with the two other pieces of Theiaโ€™s star now united with what Bryce had been born with, her star blazed as bright as the sun. The sunย wasย a star, for fuckโ€™s sakeโ€”

โ€œNo!โ€ Celestina shouted, and her power flared.

Hunt slammed his lightning into the Archangel so hard it shattered her power, sending her flying back into the snow with a satisfying thud.

Celestinaโ€™s wings splayed wide, flinging snow in all directions, blood leaking from her nose and mouth. โ€œDonโ€™t!โ€ she cried to Bryce. โ€œIโ€™ve dedicatedย yearsย of my life to preventing the Rift from opening,โ€ she panted. โ€œFind another way. Donโ€™t do this.โ€

Bryce halted, snow spraying with the swiftness of her stop.ย That magnificent star blazed from her chest, casting a brilliant glimmer over the snow.ย Breathing hard, Bryce said to the Archangel, โ€œThe Princes of Hel have offered their help, and Midgard needs it, whether you know it or not. Hunt and I have already killed two Archangels. Donโ€™t make us kill you, too.โ€

Hunt glanced to Bryce in question. As if there was an alternative to killing Celestinaโ€”

โ€œYou โ€ฆ,โ€ Celestina said. โ€œYou killed Micah and Sandriel,โ€ she whispered.

โ€œThey were strongerย than you,โ€ Hunt said, โ€œso I donโ€™t think much of your chances.โ€

Huntโ€™s lightning flared around him, poised to strike, to flay her from the inside out, as he had done with Sandriel.

But Celestinaโ€™s brown eyes widened at his lightning, released from its bonds and spreading through the world. Sheโ€™d never seen the full extent of what he could doโ€”sheโ€™d never had the chance during those weeks theyโ€™dย worked together. โ€œHow is it โ€ฆ how is it that you have the power of Archangels but are not one yourself?โ€ she asked.

โ€œBecause Iโ€™m the Umbra Mortis,โ€ Hunt said, voice unyielding as the ice around them. And heโ€™d never felt more like it as he stared at Celestina, and knew that with one strike to her heart, sheโ€™d be smoldering, bloody ruins.

Celestinaโ€™s gaze lowered, and she dropped to her knees.ย Like she knew it, too.

A plume of pure, uncut lightning rose above Huntโ€™s shoulder, an asp ready to strike true. He looked to Bryce, waiting for the nod to incinerate her.

But Bryce was staring at him sadly. Softly, lovingly, she said, โ€œYouโ€™re not, Hunt.โ€

He didnโ€™t understand the words. He blinked at her.

Bryce stepped forward, snow crunching under her feet. โ€œYouโ€™re not the Umbra Mortis,โ€ย she said. โ€œYou never were, deep down. And you never will be.โ€

Hunt pointed a lightning-wreathed finger at Celestina. โ€œShe and all her kind should be blasted off the face of Midgard.โ€

โ€œMaybe,โ€ Bryce said gently, taking another step. Her starlight faded into nothing. โ€œBut not by you.โ€

Disgust roiled through him. Heโ€™d never once hated Bryce, but in that moment, as she doubted him, he did.

โ€œSheย doesnโ€™t deserve to die, Hunt.โ€

โ€œYes, she fucking does,โ€ Hunt spat. โ€œI remember each and every one of themโ€”all the angels who marched against us on Mount Hermon, all the Senate, the Asteri, and the Archangels at my sentencing. I rememberย allย of them, and sheโ€™s no better than they were. Sheโ€™s no better than Sandriel. Than Micah.โ€

โ€œMaybe,โ€ Bryce said again, her voice still gentle, soothing. Heย hated that, too. โ€œNo one is forgiving her. But she doesnโ€™t deserve to die. And I donโ€™t want her blood on your hands.โ€

โ€œWhere was this mercy when it came to the Autumn King? You didnโ€™t stop Ruhn then.โ€

โ€œThe Autumn King had done nothing in his long, miserable life except inflict pain. He didnโ€™t merit my notice, let alone my mercy. She does.โ€

โ€œWhy?โ€ He looked to his mate, his rage slipping a notch.ย โ€œWhy?โ€

โ€œBecause she made a mistake,โ€ Naomi said, stepping forward, expression pained. โ€œAnd has been trying to make it right ever since. Isaiah and I didnโ€™t come up here with her because she ordered us to. We wanted to help her.โ€

Hunt pointed to the Rift mere feet from Bryce. โ€œSheโ€™s going to stop you from opening it.โ€

โ€œI will not,โ€ Celestina promised, keeping her head bowed. โ€œI yield.โ€

โ€œLetย her go, Hunt,โ€ Bryce said.

โ€œMorven yielded, and you killed him,โ€ Hunt snapped at her.

โ€œI know,โ€ Bryce said. โ€œAnd Iโ€™ll live with that. I wouldnโ€™t wish the same burden on you. Hunt โ€ฆ We have enough enemies. Let her go.โ€

โ€œI swear upon Solas himself,โ€ Celestina said, the highest oath an angel could invoke, โ€œthat I will help you, if it is within my power.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not going to take the word of anย Archangel.โ€

โ€œWell, weโ€™re going to need this Archangel,โ€ Bryce said, and Huntโ€™s rage slipped further as he looked to her again.

โ€œWhat?โ€

Bryce glanced at the Harpyโ€™s body, half-melted from Huntโ€™s lightning clashing with Celestinaโ€™s power. The rock around it had been warpedโ€”his lightning had altered the stone itself. Bryce closed the distance between her and Hunt, reaching out to take his hand.

His lightning crawled over her skin, but he didnโ€™t let it hurt. He could never hurt her.

โ€œYou said youโ€™re with meโ€”all of you,โ€ Bryce murmured, staring at him and only him. โ€œPut the past behind you. Focus on whatโ€™s ahead. We have a world to save, and I need my mate at my side to do it. No one elseโ€”not a son of Hel, not the Umbra Mortis, not even Hunt fucking Athalar. I need myย mate. Just Hunt.โ€

He saw it all in her eyesโ€”that no matter what had happened, who heโ€™d been and what heโ€™d done โ€ฆ it really didnโ€™t matter to her. Being made in Hel didnโ€™t matter to her. But sheโ€™d captured who he was, deep down, in those photos last spring. The person sheโ€™d brought into the world. The person she loved.

Just Hunt.

So he let go. Let go of the lightning, of the death singing in his veins. Let go ofย Apollionโ€™s and Thanatosโ€™s smirking faces. Let go of his rage at the Archangel before him, and the Archangels whoโ€™d existed before her.

Just Hunt. He liked that.

His lightning faded, fizzling away entirely. And he said to Bryce, as if she were the only person on Midgard, in any galaxy, โ€œI love you, Just Bryce.โ€

She snickered, and kissed him lightly on the cheek. โ€œNow, if you donโ€™t plan on killingย Celestina anymore โ€ฆโ€ Bryce pulled the Mask from her jacket again. โ€œWeโ€™re going to raise an army.โ€

โ€œWhat army?โ€ Isaiah whispered.

โ€œWeโ€™re going to raise the Fallen,โ€ Bryce said, tossing the Mask in the air and catching it like it was a fucking sunball.

Huntโ€™s knees buckled. โ€œYou said we were going to use the Mask to fight the Asteri.โ€

โ€œAnd we are,โ€ Bryce said, pitching the Mask up and catchingย it once more. โ€œItโ€™s your fault you didnโ€™t ask for specifics onย howย weโ€™d use it against them.โ€

No, heโ€™d assumed sheโ€™d put it on and it would give her some edge to kill them.

Hunt shook his head. โ€œYouโ€™re out of your mind.โ€

Bryce halted her tossing at that, voice gentling. โ€œWe need a distraction for the Asteri. Hel wonโ€™t be enough. But an army of the dead, an army of the Fallen, will work nicely.ย An army that wonโ€™t have to die again. And Isaiah and Naomi are going to lead them.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s why you sent Ruhn and Lidia to get them,โ€ Hunt said quietly, fighting through his shock.

Isaiah gave him a questioning look, but Bryce replied, โ€œYes. I thought if we could get them, and get the Mask from Nesta โ€ฆ it might work.โ€

โ€œBut how can you raise them?โ€ Hunt demanded. Nesta had used the bones ofย a beast, Bryce had told him. โ€œTheir bodies are goneโ€”โ€

โ€œThe Asteri kept their wings,โ€ Bryce said, disgust lacing every word. โ€œThey keptย yourย wings, like trophies. But because they didnโ€™t have Sailings, I think part of their souls might still be attached.โ€

Hunt rubbed at his frozen face. โ€œAnd whatโ€”youโ€™re just going to have a bunch of wings flying around?โ€

She cut him a sharp look. โ€œNo. Well,ย yesโ€”but only to get them to where we need their souls.โ€

โ€œYou said the Mask can reanimate dead bodiesโ€”not give souls new ones.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s what I saw Nesta do,โ€ Bryce said. โ€œBut Theiaโ€™s star โ€ฆโ€

Cupping her hands before her chest, she drew out the blazing, beautiful star. It illuminated the mists, set the snow at their feet sparkling.

โ€œWow,โ€ Naomi breathed.

What Bryce had taken from her chestย that day during theย attack last spring was a fraction of the star she now held between her palms.

โ€œThis,โ€ Bryce said, face glowing in the starlight, โ€œseems to recognize the Mask, somehow. When I put the Mask on, I could feel the pull between the two powers. Maybe itโ€™s something about Theiaโ€™s star. I think it can command the Mask to do โ€ฆ different things.โ€

โ€œThis isnโ€™t the time to experiment,โ€ย Hunt warned.

โ€œI know,โ€ Bryce conceded. โ€œBut I think all it would take is a bit of the deceased, and I could Make them anew. Not give them true life, but their souls would be returnedโ€”given new forms. Unlike โ€ฆ unlike what the Asteri did to the Harpy.โ€

โ€œThat mask can truly raise the dead, then,โ€ Naomi said hoarsely.

Bryce nodded. โ€œThe Fallen wouldnโ€™t be given new, breathing bodies, but yesโ€”theyโ€™dย be able to help us.โ€

โ€œWhat sort of bodies, then?โ€ Isaiah asked, glancing nervously at Hunt.

โ€œOnes the Asteri already made for us,โ€ Bryce said a shade quietly. โ€œPerfect blends of magic and tech.โ€

โ€œThe new mech-suits,โ€ Hunt realized. โ€œThe ones the Asteri stationed on Mount Hermon.โ€

Bryce nodded gravely. โ€œI think Rigelus stationed those suits up there to taunt you guys, but itโ€™s about to blowย up in his stupid fucking face. Lidia said the suits donโ€™t need pilots to operate, so we donโ€™t have to worry about any physical interference. Dec can hack into their computer system and block imperial access while the souls of the Fallen fuse with the mech-suits and pilot them under Naomi and Isaiahโ€™s command.โ€

But to do what she was suggesting โ€ฆ

โ€œWe canโ€™t,โ€ Hunt rasped, wings slumping. โ€œI canโ€™tย ask them to die for us again. Even if theyโ€™re already dead. The Fallen have given too much.โ€

Bryce walked over to him. Took his hand. โ€œWe need those suits piloted by the Fallen, or theyโ€™ll be used againstย usย by the Asteri. We need the Asteri and their forces entirely occupied.โ€

But Huntโ€™s heart twisted. โ€œBryce.โ€

โ€œIt will be their choice whether to return, to pilot those suits. Iโ€™ll give themย that choice, when I raise them. And Iโ€™ll be with you for every moment of it.โ€ She nodded to Isaiah and Naomi. โ€œTheyโ€™ll command the Fallen. You donโ€™t need to shoulder that burden anymore. Iโ€™ll need you with meโ€”in the Asteriโ€™s palace.โ€

He closed his eyes, breathing in her scent. Celestina could have struck, he supposed, but she remained kneeling.

And just as he had that day when Hunt had givenย Sandriel her due, Isaiah suddenly knelt before him. Naomi joined him on her knees.

โ€œIโ€™m not an Archangel,โ€ Hunt blurted. โ€œAnd I havenโ€™t agreed to lead you two. So get up.โ€

It was Celestina who said, โ€œPerhaps the age of Archangels is over.โ€

โ€œYou sound happy about it.โ€

โ€œI would be, if it were to come to pass,โ€ Celestina said, and got to her feet. โ€œI told you once: Shahar was my friend. I mightย not have had the courage to fight alongside her then โ€ฆโ€ Her chin lifted. โ€œBut I do now.โ€

He was having none of it. โ€œAnd what areย youย going to do during all this?โ€

Bryce answered before Celestina could reply. โ€œSheโ€™s going to Ephraimโ€™s fortress.โ€ At Huntโ€™s surprised look, echoed by Celestina, Bryce explained, โ€œHeโ€™s the closest Archangel to the Eternal City. We need him occupied. If Ephraim joinsย the fight, it will complicate everything.โ€

Celestina nodded gravely. โ€œI will make sure he does not come within a hundred miles of the capital.โ€

โ€œHow?โ€ Hunt demanded. โ€œTie him up?โ€

โ€œI will do whatever is necessary to end this,โ€ Celestina said, chin high.

Hunt pointed to the Rift. โ€œWeโ€™re going to open the Rift toย Hel. You didnโ€™t seem too keen on that a moment ago.โ€

Celestina glanced betweenย Hunt and Bryce. โ€œIt goes against everything Iโ€™ve worked for, but โ€ฆ it does seem that all you two have done has been in the best interest of the innocents ofย Midgard. I donโ€™t believe that you would open the Rift if it would jeopardize the most vulnerable.โ€

โ€œYeah?โ€ Hunt snapped. โ€œAnd where the fuck wereย youย when Asphodel Meadows was blasted into nothing?โ€

That brought a measure of ice to Bryceโ€™sย stare. True grief filled Celestinaโ€™s eyes.

โ€œIt was the final straw, Hunt,โ€ Isaiah said. โ€œWhy weโ€”sheโ€”disobeyed the Asteri. They gave no warning. The ships pulled into the Istros, and they said it was for our protection. I didnโ€™t even know the ships could send aerial missiles that far.โ€

Naomiโ€™s lashes were pearled with tears that quickly turned to ice as she added, โ€œIt was the most cowardly, unforgivableย โ€ฆ We donโ€™t stand for that. None of us. Not Celestina, and certainly not the 33rd.โ€

Hunt looked back to Bryce, and found only pain and cold resolve staring back at him. She was right. They had enough enemies. Ones who had to pay.

And he might not have trusted one word out of an Archangelโ€™s mouth, but if Isaiah and Naomi believed Celestina, that meant something. Isaiah, who had suffered underย Archangels as much as Hunt had, was here, helping Celestina, knowing she had betrayed his friend. Isaiah wasnโ€™t some spineless assholeโ€”he was good and smart and brave.

And Isaiah was here.

So Hunt said, โ€œAll right. Letโ€™s ring Helโ€™s doorbell.โ€

Hunt had enough lightning left to blast Bryce again. It passed through her and into the Gateโ€”into the heart of the Northern Rift.

Her will, blazingย with that undiluted starlight, changed its location once more.

Celestina, Isaiah, and Naomi held back a step, all glowing with power, readying for the worst.

Impenetrable darkness spread within the archway, broken only by two glowing blue eyes.

Prince Aidas stood there, impeccably dressed in his jet-black clothes, not one golden hair on his head out of place. He surveyed the icy terrain, theย sun now setting after a brief window of daylight.

Bryce swung her arm out in a grand, sweeping gesture as the Prince of the Chasm stepped through the Northern Rift. โ€œWelcome back to Midgard,โ€ she said. โ€œHope you have a pleasant stay.โ€
