Chapter no 77

House of Flame and Shadow (Crescent City, #3)

โ€œIs that a request or a threat?โ€ Nesta asked quietly, and even with a portal between them, the ground seemed to shudder at the femaleโ€™s power.

โ€œItโ€™s a plea. A desperate fucking plea,โ€ Bryce said, and exposed her palms to the female in supplication. โ€œI need it to give me an edge against the Asteri. To destroy them.โ€

โ€œNo.โ€ Nestaโ€™s eyes held no mercy. โ€œNow shut the portal and be gone.โ€ Sheย glanced over a shoulder, where the stars seemed to be winking out in the far distance. โ€œBefore the High Lord gets here and rips you to shreds.โ€

โ€œWhat is that?โ€ Hunt murmured, marking the darkness sweeping in.

โ€œRhysand,โ€ Bryce murmured back, then said to Nesta, โ€œPlease. I donโ€™t need the Mask forever. Just โ€ฆ until itโ€™s done. Then Iโ€™ll return it.โ€

Nesta laughed, pure ice. โ€œYou expect me to trustย a female who tried to deceive and outsmart us at every turn?โ€

โ€œIย didย outsmart you,โ€ Bryce said coolly, and Nestaโ€™s eyes sparked at the challenge. โ€œBut thatโ€™s neither here nor there. Look, I get itโ€”the Mask is insanely powerful and dangerous. I wouldnโ€™t trust someone who asked me to use the Horn, either. But my world needs this.โ€

Nesta said nothing.

The darkness crept closer. Fury leaked fromย it, along with a primal rage. Bryce took a step forward, and Nestaโ€™s dagger angled upward.

โ€œPlease,โ€ Bryce said again. โ€œI promise Iโ€™ll return the Maskโ€”and Truth-Teller. After Iโ€™ve done what I need to do here.โ€

โ€œYou must think me a fool if you believe Iโ€™d hand over one of the deadliest weapons in my world. Especially when the monsters inย yourย world have wanted to get their hands on it and theย rest of the Dread Trove for millennia. Not to mention that few people can use the Mask and live. You put it on, and you might very well die.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s a risk Iโ€™m willing to take,โ€ Bryce said calmly.

โ€œAnd Iโ€™m supposed to trust that you, after all you did here, are going to return the Mask out of the goodness of your heart?โ€

Bryce nodded. โ€œYes.โ€

Nesta laughed joylessly, glancing at the approachingย darkness. โ€œAll I have to do is wait until he gets here, you know. Then youโ€™ll wish youโ€™d shut that portal.โ€

โ€œI know,โ€ Bryce said, and her throat tightened. โ€œBut Iโ€™m begging you. The Asteri just exterminated an entire human community in my city. Families.โ€ Her eyes burned with tears, and the frigid wind threatened to freeze them. โ€œThey killedย children. To punish me. To punish my mateโ€โ€”Bryce gesturedย to Huntโ€”โ€œfor escaping their clutches. This has to endโ€”it has to stopย somewhere.โ€

The cold anger in Nestaโ€™s eyes flickered.

Bryce couldnโ€™t stop the tears that slid down her cheeks, turning instantly to ice. โ€œI know you donโ€™t trust me. You have no reason to. But I promise Iโ€™ll return the Mask. I brought collateralโ€”to prove that my intentions are good. That Iย willย give it back.โ€

And with that,ย Bryce ushered her parents forward. Ember and Randall gave her wary glances, but edged closer to the portal.

It tore Bryceโ€™s heart out to do it, but she said firmly to Nesta, โ€œThese are my parents. Ember Quinlan and Randall Silago. Iโ€™m giving them to youโ€”to stay in your world, until I destroy the Asteri and return the Mask to you.โ€

Nestaโ€™s eyes flared with shock, but she mastered it instantly,ย squaring her shoulders. โ€œAnd if you die in the process?โ€

โ€œThen my parents will be safer stuck in your world than in mine.โ€

โ€œBut the Mask will be in yours. In the hands of the Asteri.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t have anything greater to offer you than this,โ€ Bryce said, voice cracking.

โ€œItโ€™s not about offering me anything.โ€

Bryce bit back her sob, and her parents turned to her, confused and trusting, angryย on her behalf without knowing why.

โ€œBryce,โ€ Hunt said, eyeing that approaching storm. โ€œWe should shut the connection.โ€ Only Hunt knew the horrible thing she was doing. How it had killed her to leave Cooper behind, because it would have been too suspicious to insist he come on so dangerous a mission. But Baxian, Fury, and June would look after himโ€”and Syrinx.

โ€œBryce?โ€ her mom asked. โ€œWhatโ€™s goingย on?โ€

Bryce couldnโ€™t stop her tears as she looked at her mom, at her dad. Possibly for the last time. โ€œNothing,โ€ she said, and faced Nesta again.

โ€œIf you wonโ€™t give me the Mask,โ€ she said to the female, โ€œthen take them anyway.โ€

Nesta blinked.

โ€œTake my parents,โ€ Bryce said, voice breaking. โ€œThey have no idea why theyโ€™re here or who you are or what your world is. They think Iโ€™m talking to someoneย in Hel. But take them, and keep them safe. I ask only that.โ€

Nesta studied Bryce, then Bryceโ€™s mother and father. She set her dagger down on the side table near her chair. โ€œYouโ€™d leave them in my world โ€ฆ and possibly never see them again.โ€

โ€œYes,โ€ Bryce said. โ€œI need Hunt to help me against the Asteri. But my parents are human. Theyโ€™ll be easy targets for the Asteriโ€”theyโ€™re already being huntedย by them. Theyโ€™re good people.โ€ She fought back another sob. โ€œTheyโ€™re the best people.โ€

โ€œBryce,โ€ Randall said, enough warning in his voice that she knew heโ€™d spied the encroaching darkness and could tell that something was not right with this plan.

But Bryce couldnโ€™t look at her parents. Only at Nesta.

The silver fire in the femaleโ€™s gray-blue eyes banked. Then vanished.

Nesta extended herย hand toward Bryce. Something golden glittered in it.

The Mask.

โ€œFor whatever good it can do you,โ€ Nesta said quietly, โ€œitโ€™s yours to borrow.โ€ A glance at her parents told Bryce enough: sheโ€™d take the collateral.

Bryceโ€™s throat bobbed. Hunt murmured, โ€œWhat the fuckย isย that thing?โ€ As if he could sense the ancient, depthless power leaking from the Mask in Nestaโ€™s hand.

But Bryce said, โ€œThankย you,โ€ and reached toward Nesta. She could have sworn the very worldโ€”all worldsโ€”shuddered as Nestaโ€™s hand crossed into Midgard and passed the Mask to Bryce.

Then it was in Bryceโ€™s gloved fingers, and it was unholy and empty and cruelโ€”but the star in her chest seemed to purr in its presence.

Bryce tucked it into her jacket, zipping it up inside. It thrummed against her body, its ancient beat echoingย in her bones. Her starlight seemed to flicker in answer. Like whatever piece of Theia remained in it knew the Mask, and was glad to see it once more.

โ€œThank you,โ€ Bryce said again. The darkness was now blotting out the city below Nestaโ€™s window.

โ€œGood luck,โ€ Nesta whispered.

Bryce inclined her head in thanks. And with a subtle nod to Hunt โ€ฆ

His power struck her parents. Not lightning, butย a storm wind at their backs. Shoving them through the portal, through the Northern Rift, and into Nestaโ€™s world.

โ€œBryce!โ€ her mother shouted, stumblingโ€”but Bryce didnโ€™t wait. Didnโ€™t say anything as she willed the Horn to sever the connection, to collapse the bridge between their worlds. The last image she had was of the darkness, of Rhysandโ€™s power, slamming into the windows of Nestaโ€™s room,ย her motherโ€™s outraged face, Randall reaching for his rifleโ€”

Snow and mist returned. The Rift was shut. And her parents were on the other side of it.

Bryceโ€™s knees wobbled. Hunt put a hand to her elbow. โ€œWe have to get out of here.โ€

She had the Mask. And the Horn. And Theiaโ€™s star. And the blades. It would have to be enough to take on living gods.

โ€œBryce, we have to go,โ€ Hunt said, strongerย now. โ€œCan you teleport us back to the wall?โ€

It should have been a relief, to know her parents were in that other world, with people who she had learned were decent and kind, but her mom would never forgive her. Randall would never forgive her. Not just for throwing them into that world, but for leaving Cooper behind.

โ€œWhat theย fuck,โ€ Hunt hissed, and Bryce whirled as he hauled her behind him.

Right as the Harpy, clad in white to camouflage her against the snow, dove from the mists. Even her black wings had been painted white to blend in.

Amid the swirling mists, she was as awful as Bryce remembered, yet her face โ€ฆ There was nothing alive there, nothing remotely aware. She was a husk. A host. With one mission:ย kill.
