Chapter no 76

House of Flame and Shadow (Crescent City, #3)

As it had that day at the Asteriโ€™s palace, when she had leapt from her own world to another, Huntโ€™s lightning lanced through Bryceโ€™s back, through the Horn, into the star on her chestโ€”and out into the Gate.

Ember shouted in fear, and even Randall stumbled back a step, but Hunt let his lightning flow into Bryce, kept a steady stream of it surging between them.

โ€œOpen,โ€ Bryce said, her voiceย carrying on the wind. A sliver of darkness began to spread in the middle of the Gate.

Hunt funneled more lightning into her, and the sliver widened, inch by inch.

The Northern Rift had been fixed on Helโ€”until now. Until his power had passed through not only the Horn on Bryce, but the star on her chest, tooโ€”that link to a different world. Reorienting the Gate, as it had that day in the Eternalย Palace, to open elsewhere. That was their theory, at least. No one had ever tried to manipulate the Northern Rift to open somewhere other than Hel, butโ€”

โ€œThatโ€™s enough, Hunt,โ€ Ember warned.

Hunt ignored her and sent another spike of power into his mate. Bryceโ€™s hair floated up, snow and ice drifting with it, but she maintained an eerie calm until the void filled the entirety of the massive Gate.

Hunt cut off his lightning, running to where Bryce stood before the wall of darkness.

Darknessโ€”flecked by starlight.

A female with golden-brown hair sat in an armchair before a fireplace on the other side of it. All that darkness was the starry night beyond her windows.

And her face was a portrait of pure shock as Bryce lifted a hand in greeting and said, โ€œHello, Nesta.โ€

The River Queen satย in a chair before a computer panel in the control room connected to the west air lock, a makeshift throne in the sterile, utilitarian space. The tech who operated the computer had vacated the chamber in a near-sprint at the queenโ€™s snapped command.

Tharion was well aware that the air lock could be easily hosed down to remove any and all traces of blood. A body flushed out through it would goย straight to the sobeks circling outside like Reapers.

If Sathia noted those details, if she understood that she and Tharion had been brought here purely for the convenience of getting rid of his corpse, she didnโ€™t let on.

His wife simply curtsied, a graceful swoop downward, at odds with her casual leggings and white sweater, the cashmere now streaked with dirt and torn along the bottom hem.ย โ€œYour Majesty,โ€ Sathia said, her voice cultured yet unthreatening. โ€œIt is an honor to meet you.โ€

The River Queenโ€™s dark eyes swept over Sathia. โ€œAm I supposed to open my arms to the female who usurped my daughter?โ€

Sathia didnโ€™t so much as flinch. โ€œIf my union with Tharion has brought you grief or offense, then I offer my wholehearted apologies.โ€

A beat, too long to be comforting. Tharion liftedย his gaze to the River Queen and found her watching him. Her gaze was cold, cruel. Unimpressed.

โ€œI take it,โ€ the River Queen said, โ€œyou want something very badly from me, if you have come back to risk my wrath.โ€

Tharion bowed his head. โ€œYes, Your Majesty.โ€

โ€œAnd yet you have brought yourย wifeโ€”for what? To soften me? Or as a shield to hide behind?โ€

โ€œConsidering sheโ€™s barely up to my chest,โ€ Tharionย said dryly, โ€œI donโ€™t think sheโ€™d make much of a shield.โ€

Sathia glared at him, but the River Queen frowned. โ€œAlways making jokes. Always playing the fool.โ€ She waved a hand adorned in rings of shell and coral toward Sathia. โ€œI suppose I should wish you congratulations on your nuptials, but I instead wish you luck. With a male like that for a husband, youโ€™ll need it in droves.โ€

โ€œI thank you,โ€ย Sathia said with such sincerity that Tharion nearly bought it, too. โ€œMay your good wishes fly straight to Urdโ€™s ears.โ€

Okay, maybe heโ€™d underestimated his wife. She seemed more comfortable in this setting than he was.

Indeed, the River Queen seemed intrigued enough by Sathiaโ€™s grace under fire that she said, โ€œWell, Tharion. Letโ€™s hear what was so important that you dared enter my realm again.โ€

He clasped his hands behind his back, exposing his chest like he knew the River Queen preferred. He didnโ€™t see her jagged sea-glass knife anywhere, but she always had it on her. โ€œI am here on behalf of Bryce Quinlan, Queen of the Fae of Valbara and Avallen, to request asylum in the Blue Court for the people of Crescent City.โ€

Another long pause.

โ€œQueen, is it?โ€ the River Queen said. โ€œOf Valbaranย and Avallen Fae?โ€ Her eyes slid to Sathiaโ€”the Fae representative, he supposed.

Sathiaโ€™s chin dipped. โ€œBryce Quinlan now rules both territories. I serve her, as does Tharion.โ€

Eyes as black and depthless as a sharkโ€™s slid to Tharion. The same eyes as her sister, the Ocean Queen, he realized. โ€œAm I supposed to be pleased to hear you have yet again defected?โ€

โ€œI did what my morals demanded,โ€ Tharionย said.

โ€œMorals,โ€ the River Queen mused. โ€œWhat morals do you have other than ensuring your own survival at any cost? Was it yourย moralsย that guided you when you took my daughterโ€™s maidenhead, swearing to love her until you died, and then toyed with her affections for the next decade?โ€

Fuck.ย But Sathia answered for him with that unflinching calm, โ€œThese are the mistakes of youthโ€”ones Tharion hasย reflected upon and learned from.โ€

The River Queen fixed her attention on Sathia again. โ€œHas he? Or was that the poisoned honey he poured into your ear to woo you?โ€

โ€œHe brought me before you,โ€ Sathia countered. โ€œProof that he is willing to own up to his actions.โ€

It took a special sort of person to talk like that to the River Queen. To not back down one inch, not tremble at her power, her agelessย face.

The River Queenโ€™s eyes narrowed, clearly thinking along the same lines. โ€œAnd thisย Queen Bryceย thought Tharion the best emissary to beg me for such an enormous favor?โ€

Sathiaโ€™s chin didnโ€™t lower. โ€œShe remembered how Tharion and your people so bravely and selflessly carried innocents down here to safety during the attack this spring.โ€

Damn, she was good.

The River Queen waved a hand towardย the window overlooking the depths and the monsters prowling beyond. โ€œAnd does she have a good reason why I shouldnโ€™t kill Tharion where he stands and send his body out to the river beasts?โ€

Sathia didnโ€™t even glance toward the circling sobeks. โ€œBecause he is now in Queen Bryceโ€™s employ. You strike him down, and you shall have the Fae to deal with.โ€

A flash of little pointed teeth. โ€œTheyโ€™ll haveย to get Beneath first.โ€

Sathia didnโ€™t miss a beat. โ€œI believe it would not be in your best interest to become a city under siege.โ€

Holy gods, his wife had balls. Tharion wisely wiped any sort of reaction from his face, but Ogenas damn him, if they survived this meeting, he wanted Sathia to teach him everything she knew.

The River Queen scoffed, but angled her head before changing the subject.ย โ€œHow does the girl suddenly wield such power?โ€

โ€œThat is her own story to tell,โ€ Sathia said, folding her hands behind her back, โ€œbut she has powerful allies. In this world and in others.โ€

โ€œOthers?โ€

Tharion dared say, turning his voice into a mirror of his wifeโ€™s poised calm, โ€œBryce counts the Princes of Hel as allies.โ€

โ€œThen she is an enemy to Midgard. And an imbecile as well, if she is seekingย to hide the people of this city from the demons sheโ€™d ally with.โ€

โ€œShe doesnโ€™t seek to hide people from Hel,โ€ Tharion said, โ€œbut from the Asteriโ€™s wrath.โ€

The River Queen blinked slowly. โ€œYou ask me to take a stand against the Republic itself.โ€

โ€œWhat happened in Asphodel Meadows was a disgrace,โ€ Tharion said, voice dangerously low. โ€œIf you donโ€™t stand against the Republic for something of thisย nature, then youโ€™re complicit in their slaughter.โ€

Sathia cut him a warning glance, but the River Queen studied him. Like she hadnโ€™t really seen him until this point.

She opened her mouth, and hope surged in Tharionโ€™s chestโ€”

But then the interior door to the room hissed open, and the River Queenโ€™s daughter was charging in, rage and sorrow crumpling her beautiful face as she screamed,ย โ€œHow couldย you?โ€

โ€œIs that a Prince of Hel?โ€ย Ember whispered from a few steps behind Bryce, her teeth clacking with cold.

โ€œDoes sheย lookย like a prince?โ€ Randall hissed back, snow crunching as he hopped from one foot to another to keep warm.

โ€œBryce said Aidas appeared to her as a cat, so whoโ€™s to sayโ€”โ€

โ€œGuys,โ€ Bryce murmured as Nesta slowly, slowly rose from her chair by the fireplace. A dagger had somehowย appeared in the femaleโ€™s hand, as if it had been concealed under the cushion.

It had worked. Theyโ€™d managed to make the Northern Rift open to a place other than Hel.

โ€œWhat are you doing?โ€ Nesta said, and it occurred to Bryce in that moment that none of the others could understand her. Which left Bryce as translator.

So Bryce muttered to Hunt, wide-eyed but poised to leap into action, โ€œGiveย me a minute,โ€ and faced Nesta.

โ€œIโ€™m not going to harm you, or your world,โ€ Bryce said in Nestaโ€™s own language.

โ€œThen why is there a giant portal in my living room?โ€ Nestaโ€™s blue-gray eyes were gleaming with predatory violence. Some of that silver flame was starting to build at her fingertips. Would it withstand Bryceโ€™s starfire? Especially with the force of that leveled-up power in her bodyย behind it?

But she hadnโ€™t come here for that. โ€œI needed to talk to you.โ€

โ€œHow did you know Iโ€™d be alone?โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t. Urd threw me a bone.โ€

The dagger and the silver flame didnโ€™t vanish. โ€œShut that portal.โ€

โ€œNot until I say what I need to say.โ€

The silver flame now flickered in Nestaโ€™s eyes. โ€œThen say it, and be gone.โ€ Her gaze lowered to Bryceโ€™s side. โ€œAnd leave the dagger you stole.โ€

Bryce ignored that and swallowed hard.

Ember hissed to Randall,ย โ€œI donโ€™t think itโ€™s going well.โ€ย Randall hushed her.

But Nestaโ€™s eyes slid to Huntโ€”to the feathered wings, the lightning dancing at his hand, the halo on his brow. โ€œIs that your mate?โ€

Bryce nodded, and motioned Hunt to step forward. โ€œHunt Athalar.โ€ Sheโ€™d never fucking useย Danaanย again. For either of them.

Hunt approached and inclinedย his head. Bryce could have sworn lightning lashed across his eyes, as if the power heโ€™d summoned, enough to open the Northern Rift, was riding him hard.

But Nesta only observed him imperiously, then turned to Bryce. โ€œWhat do you want?โ€

Bryce squared her shoulders. โ€œI need you to give me the Mask.โ€
