Chapter no 75

House of Flame and Shadow (Crescent City, #3)

Ruhn didnโ€™t recognize his city.

Imperial battleships filled the Istros. Dreadwolves prowled the streets. The 33rd had been joined by the Asterian Guard.

And the Meadows still smoldered in the north, lines of smoke rising to the jarringly blue sky.

But it was the quiet that unnerved him the most as he and Lidia crept through the sewers, making their way toward the Comitium. Flynn and Decย had peeled off a few blocks back to go scope out the Aux headquarters for any whisper of where Isaiah and Naomi might be. If they could intercept Isaiah and Naomi at the Comitium, theyโ€™d save themselves hours of searching.

Then came the hard part: finding a secure place to meet with them, long enough to explain everything. But for right now, his focus was on finding the two members of Celestinaโ€™sย triarii. And trying not to get caught in the process.

โ€œThis should open up into a tunnel that will lead right under the Comitium,โ€ Ruhn told Lidia, keeping his voice low. The sewers appeared empty, but in Crescent City there was always someone watching. Listening.

โ€œOnce weโ€™re in the building,โ€ she said, โ€œI can get us to their barracks.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re sure you know where the camerasโ€”โ€

She gave himย a look. โ€œIt was my job when Ephraim visited to know where they were. Both as the Hind and as Agent Daybright. I could navigate this place blindfolded.โ€

Ruhn blew out a breath. โ€œAll right. But when we get to the barracksโ€”โ€

โ€œThen those shadows of yours come into play, and we hide until Isaiah and Naomi appear. Unless theyโ€™re already there and we can get them alone.โ€

โ€œRight. Got it.โ€ He rolledย his neck.

She eyed him. โ€œYou seem โ€ฆ nervous.โ€

He snorted. โ€œItโ€™s my first mission with my girlfriend. I want to impress her.โ€

Her lips quirked up, and Ruhn led the way down another tunnel. โ€œAm I your girlfriend, then?โ€ she asked.

โ€œIs that โ€ฆ okay with you?โ€

She gave him a true smile. It made her seem younger, lighterโ€”the person she might have been if Urd hadnโ€™t taken her down her particularย fucked-up life path. It knocked the breath from him. โ€œYeah, Ruhn. Itโ€™s okay with me.โ€

He smiled back, remembering how sheโ€™d chastised him when theyโ€™d first met for saying โ€œYeah,โ€ for being so casual.

Ahead, Ruhn saw that they were approaching a dented metal door markedย Do Not Enter. โ€œNow, thatโ€™s practically an invitation,โ€ he said, earning a laugh from Lidia as he kicked in the door.

The sightย of the imperial battleships in the Istros robbed Tharion of any joy at the riverโ€™s familiar, beckoning scent. So did the presence of the Omega-boats docked with them. And right by the Black Dock โ€ฆ theย SPQM Faustus. The very Omega-boat theyโ€™d barely outrun that day on Ydra.

He hadnโ€™t dared venture into the northernmost part of the city to see the damage to Asphodel Meadows. They werenโ€™t here forย that, and he knew heโ€™d see nothing that would make him feel any better. The city was eerily quiet. As if in mourning.

Face and hair hidden under a sunball cap, Tharion glowered atย the armada for long enough as he stood on the quay that Sathia warned, โ€œYouโ€™ll draw attention to us with all that glaring.โ€

โ€œI should slip into the water and blast holes in all their hulls,โ€ Tharion snarled.

โ€œFocus,โ€ย she said. โ€œYou do that, and we wonโ€™t accomplish what we came here to do.โ€ She frowned at the ships. โ€œWhich is clearly still necessary.โ€

โ€œTheyโ€™re holding the city hostage.โ€

โ€œAll the more reason to plead with the River Queen to take people in.โ€

Tharion found only cool determination on Sathiaโ€™s heart-shaped face. โ€œYouโ€™re right,โ€ he said. He let out a low whistle, and waited.

An otter in a brightย yellow vest leapt onto the quay, dripping everywhere. It rose onto its hind legs in front of Tharion, whiskers twitching, spraying droplets of water.

Sathia grinned.

โ€œStop it,โ€ Tharion muttered. โ€œIt only encourages them to be cuter.โ€

She bit her lip, and though it was thoroughly distracting, Tharion got his act together enough to say to the otter, โ€œTell the River Queen that Tharion Ketos wantsย a meeting.โ€

The whiskers twitched again.

Sathia added, โ€œPlease.โ€

Tharion avoided the urge to roll his eyes, but also added, โ€œPlease.โ€ He fished out a gold coin. โ€œAnd make it speedy, friend.โ€

The otter took the coin in his little black fingers and turned it over, eyes brightening at the outrageous sum. With a flick of his long tail, he leapt back into the clear turquoise water with barely aย ripple and was gone.

Tharion watched him gracefully swim out into the depths, then vanish over the drop into the dark, to the Blue Court Beneath. Only tiny, glimmering lights showed any signs of life there.

โ€œWhat now?โ€ Sathia asked, again eyeing the warships docked in the river. If just one of the soldiers on them recognized Tharion โ€ฆ

He tugged his sunball hat over his hair. โ€œNow we lurk inย the shadows and wait.โ€

โ€œThis doesnโ€™t seem safe,โ€ Ember said for the fifth time as Bryce stood before the Northern Riftโ€™s archway. Hunt waited ten paces behind her, freezing his feathers off. โ€œThis seems like the opposite of safe. Youโ€™re openingย the Northern Rift to Hel. And weโ€™re supposed to believe these demonsโ€”the princes, for Urdโ€™s sakeโ€”areย good?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not sure theyโ€™re good,โ€ Bryce said.ย โ€œBut theyโ€™re on our side. Just trust me, Mom.โ€

โ€œTrust her, Ember,โ€ Randall said, but from the tightness in his voice, Hunt knew the man wasnโ€™t too happy, either.

โ€œWhen youโ€™re ready, Athalar,โ€ Bryce called to him.

โ€œI thought you didnโ€™t need me to fuel you up anymore,โ€ Hunt said. โ€œEspecially with all that extra power youโ€™ve got now.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t want to try it on my own for this,โ€ Bryce said. โ€œSeemsย like a high-stakes situation to test out my new abilities.โ€

โ€œI bet you could do it,โ€ Hunt called over the wind, โ€œbut all right. On three.โ€ Bryce stilled, squaring her shoulders.

Hunt rallied his lightning. Prayed to every god, even if theyโ€™d mostly fucked him over until this point. The power of his lightning was familiar, yet suddenly foreign.ย Helfire,ย Apollion had called it.

Answersโ€”at longย last, answers about why he was what he was, about why he and no one else had the lightning. Even the thunderbirds, made by Hel, had been hunted to extinction by the Asteri. With Sofieโ€™s death, they were truly gone.

Though the Harpyโ€™s resurrectionโ€”another thing that was his fucking faultโ€”suggested that the Asteri now had other methods of raising the dead.

Only if they could get their hands onย more of his lightning. Heโ€™d sooner die.

โ€œOne โ€ฆ,โ€ Hunt breathed, and lifted a hand wreathed in lightning.

Lord of Lightning,ย the Oracle had called him.

โ€œTwo โ€ฆโ€

Had the Oracle seen what he was, where his power came from, that day?

You remind me of that which was lost long ago. The thunderbirds, hunted to extinction.

Was that the wind ruffling her parka, or was Bryce shaking as she waited forย the blow? Hunt didnโ€™t give himself a moment to reconsider. To halt.

โ€œThree.โ€

He launched a spear of lightning at his mate.
