โYou set foot in that Den without an invitation from the Prime or Sabine and youโre dead, pup.โ
โI know,โ Ithan said, packing yet another crate for Jesiba. The task was stupidly mundane given all the shit that was going down. But when heโd burst into the office moments ago to tell her the good news, Jesiba had refused to speak to him until heย earned his keepย for a few minutes. So here heย was, packing and talking at the same time. โBut if Hypaxia and I are heading off to the Eternal City, we might โฆ die.โ He choked on the word. โI want them to know the truth.โ
โAnd what truth is that?โ
Ithan straightened from where heโd been bent over the crate. โThe truth of what I did to Sigrid. That Sigrid exists, I guess, even if she is a Reaper. Thatโโ
โSo itโs about you easing your guiltyย conscience.โ
Ithan cut her a look. โI want them to know what happened. That yeah, Sigrid is a Reaper, and I totally failed at trying to undo that, but โฆ they do technically have an alternative to Sabineโeven if itโs a half-life. Itโd be radical and unheard of to accept a Reaper as Prime, but stranger things have happened, right?โ
Jesiba began typing away on her computer. โWhy do you care?โ
โBecause the wolves have to change. They need to know theyย can choose someone other than Sabine.โ He looked down at his palm, willing ice to form there. It cracked over his skin in a thin film before melting away. โThey need to know thereโs an antidote that might grant them powers beyond hers. That they donโt need to be subservient to her.โ
โThe wolves will need proof regarding that bit,โ Jesibaย said, โor you wonโt walk out of there alive.โ
โIsnโt this enough?โ He formed a shard of ice on his fingertip, as much as he could reliably control. He supposed heโd need to seek out the Fae or some sort of ice sprite to teach him how to command this new ability.
Hypaxia had taken the antidote minutes after him. Sheโd blacked out, as he had, but awoken thrumming with power. He could have swornย a light, playful breeze now played about her hair constantlyโand that a steady sort of power seemed to emanate from her, even when she wasnโt using it.
Heโd offered Jesiba a vial upon telling her the news, but the sorceress had said,ย It wonโt help me, pup.ย And then ordered him to begin this miserable work while he explained the rest.
Jesiba now said, โKnowing the wolves, theyโll think Quinlanย asked me to do something to you that made you โฆ unnatural.โ
โThey know Bryce is a good person.โ
โDo they? As far as I recall, theyโve been anything but kind to her since Danika and the Pack died. You included.โ
Ithanโs cheeks warmed. โIt was a rough time. For all of us.โ
โDanika Fendyr would have skewered all of you to the front gates of the Den for how you treated Quinlan.โ
โDanika wouldย have โฆโ Ithan trailed off as a thought struck him. โDanika questioned the wolf power structure, you know. Even she thought it was weird that the Fendyrs went unchecked for so long.โ
โDid she?โ
Ithan turned toward the sorceressโs desk. โBryce and I found some research papers Danika had hidden. She wanted to know why the Fendyrs were so dominantโI donโt think she approved of it, either.โ He noddedย to himself. โShe would have encouraged the others to take the antidote. To kick Sabine to the curb.โ
Jesibaโs brows rose. โIf you say so. You knew Danika far better than I ever did.โ
โI know she hated her motherโand thought the hierarchies were grossly unfair.โ Ithan paced a few steps. โI have to get those papers. Iโll bring them to the Den to show everyone that itโs not justย meย questioningย this, but that even one of the Fendyrs disagreed with their unchecked dominance. It might help sway them toward accepting an alternative to Sabine. Sigridโs a Fendyr, but sheโs not in the direct line. That might help them accept her as an alternative.โ
โTheyโll say you forged them.โ Jesiba typed away at her keyboard.
โThatโs a risk I have to take,โ Ithan said, striding to the door. โThe daysย of Sabine keeping the wolves down, of making us stand by while innocents suffer โฆ that has to end. We need a change. A big one. And maybe, if Urdโs got our backs, whatโs most important within Sigrid still remains intact, unchanged by becoming a Reaper. If thatโs the case, Iโll take Sigrid over Sabine any day.โ
Maybe it wasnโt a matter of undoing what had been done, but rather of playing the badย hand that had been dealt to him. Of adapting.
โOpen-minded as that is, Holstrom,โ Jesiba said, shutting her laptop, โdo you really think itโs a wise decision to not only go to the Den utterly defenseless, but to start preaching that they accept aย Reaperย as their Prime Apparent? Letโs not forget that some of the wolves might still like Sabine and her style of leadership. Many probably do, in fact.โ
โYeah, but itโs time to give them the chance to choose otherwise. To break free of her control.โ
โYou forget,โ Jesiba said darkly, โthat from the very start, theyโve been the Asteriโs chief enforcers. Theyโve never shown any inclination toย break freeย of anyoneโs control.โ
โItโs a risk I have to take,โ he insisted. โAnd I canโt sit around.โ
โQuinlan told you to protect Hypaxia.โ
โThis wonโtย take long. Keep an eye on her for meโplease.โ
He walked to the door, and Jesiba spoke as he wrapped hisย fingers around the knob. Her voice was heavy, resigned. โBe careful, pup.โ
Ithan snuck over to Bryceโs apartment using the House of Flame and Shadowโs unnervingly accurate map of the sewers. He didnโt want to think about who else made regular use of those tunnels.
Even with the access thatย Danika had long ago granted him, he entered the building through the roof door. There was no doubt the building was being watched, and he kept to the shadows as much as he could. If the guard downstairs saw him on the cameras, no one came to investigate.
Danikaโs papers remained where he and Bryce had left them: in the junk mail drawer. He leafed through them just to make sure they did indeedย say all heโd remembered.
They did. It could be a convenient bit of backup for his claims.ย See? Even Danika wanted all this to change. And, yes, Sigrid is a Fendyrโbut sheโs alsoย differentโshe could be a step in the right direction.
Heโd find some way to say it more eloquently, but Danikaโs name still carried weight.
Ithan gently folded the pile of papers and slid them into the back pocket ofย his jeans. Outside, the city remained quietโhushed. Grieving.
And inside this building โฆ
Gods, it was weird to see this apartment, so empty and stale without its occupants.
Ithan glanced to the white sectional, like heโd find Athalar and Bryce sitting there, Syrinx curled up with them.
How far away that existence seemed now. He doubted itโd ever return. Wondered if his friends would ever return.ย If Bryce wasโ
He didnโt let himself finish the thought.
He had no choice but to keep going. However it played out. And Jesiba was right. To walk into the Den was likely suicide, but โฆ He glanced down the hall. To Bryceโs bedroom door.
Maybe he didnโt need to go in unarmed.
