Chapter no 71

House of Flame and Shadow (Crescent City, #3)

โ€œYou set foot in that Den without an invitation from the Prime or Sabine and youโ€™re dead, pup.โ€

โ€œI know,โ€ Ithan said, packing yet another crate for Jesiba. The task was stupidly mundane given all the shit that was going down. But when heโ€™d burst into the office moments ago to tell her the good news, Jesiba had refused to speak to him until heย earned his keepย for a few minutes. So here heย was, packing and talking at the same time. โ€œBut if Hypaxia and I are heading off to the Eternal City, we might โ€ฆ die.โ€ He choked on the word. โ€œI want them to know the truth.โ€

โ€œAnd what truth is that?โ€

Ithan straightened from where heโ€™d been bent over the crate. โ€œThe truth of what I did to Sigrid. That Sigrid exists, I guess, even if she is a Reaper. Thatโ€”โ€

โ€œSo itโ€™s about you easing your guiltyย conscience.โ€

Ithan cut her a look. โ€œI want them to know what happened. That yeah, Sigrid is a Reaper, and I totally failed at trying to undo that, but โ€ฆ they do technically have an alternative to Sabineโ€”even if itโ€™s a half-life. Itโ€™d be radical and unheard of to accept a Reaper as Prime, but stranger things have happened, right?โ€

Jesiba began typing away on her computer. โ€œWhy do you care?โ€

โ€œBecause the wolves have to change. They need to know theyย can choose someone other than Sabine.โ€ He looked down at his palm, willing ice to form there. It cracked over his skin in a thin film before melting away. โ€œThey need to know thereโ€™s an antidote that might grant them powers beyond hers. That they donโ€™t need to be subservient to her.โ€

โ€œThe wolves will need proof regarding that bit,โ€ Jesibaย said, โ€œor you wonโ€™t walk out of there alive.โ€

โ€œIsnโ€™t this enough?โ€ He formed a shard of ice on his fingertip, as much as he could reliably control. He supposed heโ€™d need to seek out the Fae or some sort of ice sprite to teach him how to command this new ability.

Hypaxia had taken the antidote minutes after him. Sheโ€™d blacked out, as he had, but awoken thrumming with power. He could have swornย a light, playful breeze now played about her hair constantlyโ€”and that a steady sort of power seemed to emanate from her, even when she wasnโ€™t using it.

Heโ€™d offered Jesiba a vial upon telling her the news, but the sorceress had said,ย It wonโ€™t help me, pup.ย And then ordered him to begin this miserable work while he explained the rest.

Jesiba now said, โ€œKnowing the wolves, theyโ€™ll think Quinlanย asked me to do something to you that made you โ€ฆ unnatural.โ€

โ€œThey know Bryce is a good person.โ€

โ€œDo they? As far as I recall, theyโ€™ve been anything but kind to her since Danika and the Pack died. You included.โ€

Ithanโ€™s cheeks warmed. โ€œIt was a rough time. For all of us.โ€

โ€œDanika Fendyr would have skewered all of you to the front gates of the Den for how you treated Quinlan.โ€

โ€œDanika wouldย have โ€ฆโ€ Ithan trailed off as a thought struck him. โ€œDanika questioned the wolf power structure, you know. Even she thought it was weird that the Fendyrs went unchecked for so long.โ€

โ€œDid she?โ€

Ithan turned toward the sorceressโ€™s desk. โ€œBryce and I found some research papers Danika had hidden. She wanted to know why the Fendyrs were so dominantโ€”I donโ€™t think she approved of it, either.โ€ He noddedย to himself. โ€œShe would have encouraged the others to take the antidote. To kick Sabine to the curb.โ€

Jesibaโ€™s brows rose. โ€œIf you say so. You knew Danika far better than I ever did.โ€

โ€œI know she hated her motherโ€”and thought the hierarchies were grossly unfair.โ€ Ithan paced a few steps. โ€œI have to get those papers. Iโ€™ll bring them to the Den to show everyone that itโ€™s not justย meย questioningย this, but that even one of the Fendyrs disagreed with their unchecked dominance. It might help sway them toward accepting an alternative to Sabine. Sigridโ€™s a Fendyr, but sheโ€™s not in the direct line. That might help them accept her as an alternative.โ€

โ€œTheyโ€™ll say you forged them.โ€ Jesiba typed away at her keyboard.

โ€œThatโ€™s a risk I have to take,โ€ Ithan said, striding to the door. โ€œThe daysย of Sabine keeping the wolves down, of making us stand by while innocents suffer โ€ฆ that has to end. We need a change. A big one. And maybe, if Urdโ€™s got our backs, whatโ€™s most important within Sigrid still remains intact, unchanged by becoming a Reaper. If thatโ€™s the case, Iโ€™ll take Sigrid over Sabine any day.โ€

Maybe it wasnโ€™t a matter of undoing what had been done, but rather of playing the badย hand that had been dealt to him. Of adapting.

โ€œOpen-minded as that is, Holstrom,โ€ Jesiba said, shutting her laptop, โ€œdo you really think itโ€™s a wise decision to not only go to the Den utterly defenseless, but to start preaching that they accept aย Reaperย as their Prime Apparent? Letโ€™s not forget that some of the wolves might still like Sabine and her style of leadership. Many probably do, in fact.โ€

โ€œYeah, but itโ€™s time to give them the chance to choose otherwise. To break free of her control.โ€

โ€œYou forget,โ€ Jesiba said darkly, โ€œthat from the very start, theyโ€™ve been the Asteriโ€™s chief enforcers. Theyโ€™ve never shown any inclination toย break freeย of anyoneโ€™s control.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s a risk I have to take,โ€ he insisted. โ€œAnd I canโ€™t sit around.โ€

โ€œQuinlan told you to protect Hypaxia.โ€

โ€œThis wonโ€™tย take long. Keep an eye on her for meโ€”please.โ€

He walked to the door, and Jesiba spoke as he wrapped hisย fingers around the knob. Her voice was heavy, resigned. โ€œBe careful, pup.โ€

Ithan snuck over to Bryceโ€™s apartment using the House of Flame and Shadowโ€™s unnervingly accurate map of the sewers. He didnโ€™t want to think about who else made regular use of those tunnels.

Even with the access thatย Danika had long ago granted him, he entered the building through the roof door. There was no doubt the building was being watched, and he kept to the shadows as much as he could. If the guard downstairs saw him on the cameras, no one came to investigate.

Danikaโ€™s papers remained where he and Bryce had left them: in the junk mail drawer. He leafed through them just to make sure they did indeedย say all heโ€™d remembered.

They did. It could be a convenient bit of backup for his claims.ย See? Even Danika wanted all this to change. And, yes, Sigrid is a Fendyrโ€”but sheโ€™s alsoย differentโ€”she could be a step in the right direction.

Heโ€™d find some way to say it more eloquently, but Danikaโ€™s name still carried weight.

Ithan gently folded the pile of papers and slid them into the back pocket ofย his jeans. Outside, the city remained quietโ€”hushed. Grieving.

And inside this building โ€ฆ

Gods, it was weird to see this apartment, so empty and stale without its occupants.

Ithan glanced to the white sectional, like heโ€™d find Athalar and Bryce sitting there, Syrinx curled up with them.

How far away that existence seemed now. He doubted itโ€™d ever return. Wondered if his friends would ever return.ย If Bryce wasโ€”

He didnโ€™t let himself finish the thought.

He had no choice but to keep going. However it played out. And Jesiba was right. To walk into the Den was likely suicide, but โ€ฆ He glanced down the hall. To Bryceโ€™s bedroom door.

Maybe he didnโ€™t need to go in unarmed.
