Chapter no 70

House of Flame and Shadow (Crescent City, #3)

Ithan was thoroughly sick of playing bodyguard, even from a floor below. While Hypaxia had been comparing what sheโ€™d observed in the Reaper to the water samples and Ithanโ€™s own blood, heโ€™d been packing up artifacts in Jesibaโ€™s office. And glancing at the door every other minute as if Hypaxia would burst in and declare that sheโ€™d developed an antidote to the parasite. She never did.

Whenย he entered the morgue, he found Hypaxia at the desk, head in her hands. Vials of all sizes and shapes littered the metal surface beside her.

Ithan dared to lay a hand on her shoulder. โ€œDonโ€™t give up. Youโ€™re exhaustedโ€”youโ€™ve been working for hours. Youโ€™ll find a cure.โ€

โ€œI already found it.โ€

It took him a moment to process what sheโ€™d said. โ€œYou โ€ฆ Really?โ€

Her head bobbed, and she nudged a vialย of clear liquid with a fingertip. โ€œIt went faster than I had even dared to hope. I was able to use the synth antidote as a template. Synth and the parasite have magic-altering properties in commonโ€”Iโ€™ll spare you the details. With the changes I made, though, I think this will isolate the parasite and kill it the same way the synth antidote worked.โ€ She pointed at more small vials on a low tableย behind her. โ€œI made as much as I could. But โ€ฆโ€

โ€œBut?โ€ He could barely breathe.

She sighed. โ€œBut itโ€™s far from perfect. I had to use Athalarโ€™s lightning to bind it together. I had to use all of it, Iโ€™m afraid.โ€

She motioned to her desk, where six quartz crystals now lay. Dormant. Empty.

His heart twisted. โ€œItโ€™s okay.โ€ Sigrid would remain a Reaper for the time being, but he wouldnโ€™t give upย on trying to help her.

โ€œAthalarโ€™s lightning holds it together, but not permanently,โ€ Hypaxia went on. โ€œThe antidote is highly unstableโ€”a little jostling, and it might go completely stale. If I had more time, I might find a way to stabilize it, but for right now โ€ฆโ€

He squeezed her shoulder. โ€œJust tell me.โ€

Her mouth twisted to the side before she said, โ€œThe antidoteโ€™s not a permanent fix. Itsย effect will wear offโ€”and since the water of Midgard is still contaminated with the parasite, we will be reinfected as soon as it does.โ€

โ€œHow long will a dose work?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t know. A few weeks? Months? Longer than a few days, I think, but Iโ€™ll need to keep refining it. Find some way to make it permanent.โ€

โ€œBut itโ€™ll work for now?โ€

โ€œIn theory. So long as Athalarโ€™s lightning binds it together.ย But I havenโ€™t gathered the nerve to test it on myself. To see if it works and is safe, but also โ€ฆ to find out who I might be without this thing feeding on me.โ€ She raised her head and met his stare, her face bleak and exhausted. โ€œIf we remove this parasite, what will it accomplish? What willย youย do with the extra power?โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll help my friends, for whatever good itโ€™ll do.โ€

โ€œAnd the wolves?โ€

โ€œWhat about them?โ€

โ€œIf you get more power, it could put you beyond Sabineโ€™s abilities. Make you strong enough that you could challenge her.โ€ She looked at him seriously. โ€œYou might be able to end Sabineโ€™s tyranny, Ithan.โ€

โ€œI โ€ฆโ€ He couldnโ€™t find the right words. โ€œI didnโ€™t really think about what weโ€™d do next.โ€

She wasnโ€™t impressed. โ€œYou need to. All of us do.โ€

He stiffened. โ€œIโ€™m not a planner.ย Iโ€™m a sunball player, for fuckโ€™s sakeโ€”โ€

โ€œYouย wereย a sunball player,โ€ she said. โ€œAnd I suspect you havenโ€™t thought about the implications of having the most power among the wolves because youโ€™re avoiding thinking about what you really want.โ€

He glared at her. โ€œAnd what is that?โ€

โ€œYou want Sabine gone. No one but you is going to come along and do it.โ€

He felt sick. โ€œI donโ€™t want to lead anyone.โ€

She gave him a look, as if seeing through him. But she said, with a disappointment that cut right to his heart, โ€œAll this arguingโ€™s of no use. We donโ€™t even know if the antidote works.โ€ She eyed the vial.

She would do it, he knew. Sheโ€™d try it, risk herselfโ€”

Ithan didnโ€™t broadcast his moves before he snatched up the vial. Before he lifted it to his mouth and swallowed.

Hypaxia whirled towardย him, eyes wide with apprehensionโ€”

Then there was only black.

There was his body โ€ฆ and more than his body.

His wolf, and him, and power, like he could leap between entire continents in one boundโ€”

Ithanโ€™s eyes flew open. Had the world always been so sharp, so clear? Had the morgue smelled so strongly of antiseptic? Was there a body rotting away in one of the boxes? When hadย thatย arrived? Orย had it been lying there all along?

And that smell, of lavender and eucalyptus โ€ฆ

Hypaxia was kneeling over him, breathing hard. โ€œIthanโ€”โ€

A blink, and a flash, and he shifted. She staggered back at the wolf that appeared, faster than heโ€™d ever changed before.

Another blink and flash, and he was back in his humanoid body.

As easy as breathing. Fast as the wind. Something was different, somethingย was โ€ฆ

His blood howled toward an unseen moon. His fingers curled on the floor as he sat up, claws scraping.

โ€œIthan?โ€ The witchโ€™s voice was a whisper.

โ€œIt worked.โ€ The words echoed through the room, the world. โ€œItโ€™s goneโ€”I can tell.โ€

Somehow, a barrier had been removed. One that had ordered him to stand down, to obey โ€ฆ It was nothing but ashes now. Only dominance remained. Untethered.

Butย filling the void of that barrier with a rising, raging forceโ€”

Ithan held out his hand and willed theย thingย under his skin to come forward. Ice and snow appeared in his palm. They did not melt against his skin.

He could fucking summonย snow. The magic sang in him, an old and strange melody.

Wolves didnโ€™t have magic like this. Never had, as far as heโ€™d heard. Shifting and strength, yes, but thisย elemental power โ€ฆ it shouldnโ€™t exist in a wolf, yet there it was. Rising in him, filling the place where heโ€™d never realized the parasite had existed.

Ithan said roughly, โ€œWe need to get this to our friends.โ€

Hypaxia smiled grimly. โ€œWhat are you going to do?โ€

Ithan eyed the door to the hall. โ€œI think itโ€™s time for me to start making some plans.โ€

โ€œOnly my daughter would drag us up to Nena,โ€ย Ember groused, shivering against the cold that stole even Huntโ€™s breath away. โ€œYou couldnโ€™t have done this in, oh, I donโ€™t know, the Coronal Islands?โ€

โ€œThe Northern Rift, Mom,โ€ Bryce said through chattering teeth, โ€œis in theย north.โ€

โ€œThereโ€™s a southern one,โ€ Ember muttered.

โ€œItโ€™s even colder down there,โ€ Bryce said, and looked to Hunt and Randall for help.

Hunt chuckled despite the frigidย temperatures and howling wind that had hit them from the moment theyโ€™d stepped out of the helicopter.

They could fly no further. The massive black wall stretched for miles in either direction before curving northward, with wards protecting the airspace above it. Hunt knew from maps that the area the wall encircled was forty-nine miles in diameterโ€”seven times seven, the holiest of numbersโ€”andย that at its center, somewhere in the barren, snow-blasted terrain, lay the Northern Rift, shrouded in mist. Barriers upon barriers protected Midgard from the Rift, and Hel beyond it.

โ€œWe better get going,โ€ Randall said, nodding to the lead doors in the wall before them.

โ€œThere arenโ€™t any sentries,โ€ Hunt observed, falling into step beside the male, grateful for the snow gear Axtar had somehowย procured for all of them. โ€œThere should be at least fifteen here.โ€

โ€œMaybe they bailed because it was too fucking cold,โ€ Bryce said, shivering miserably.

โ€œAn angelic guard neverย bails,โ€ Randall said, tugging the faux-fur-lined hood of his parka further over his face. โ€œIf theyโ€™re not here โ€ฆ itโ€™s not a good sign.โ€

Hunt nodded to the rifle in Randallโ€™s gloved hands. โ€œThat work in these temperatures?โ€

โ€œItโ€™d better,โ€ Ember grumbled.

But Hunt caught Bryceโ€™s look, and summoned his lightning to the ready. He knew her starfire was already warming beneath her gloves. With Theiaโ€™s power now united within her โ€ฆ he couldnโ€™t decide if he was eager to see what that starfire could do, or dreading it.

โ€œIs it a trap?โ€ Ember said as they approached the towering, sealed gates and abandoned guard post.

Hunt peered into the frosted window of the booth, then yanked open the door. The ice was crusted so thickly he had to use a considerable amount of strength to pry it free. A swift examination of the interior revealed rime coating the controls, the chairs, the water station. โ€œNo oneโ€™s been here for a while.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t like this,โ€ Ember said. โ€œItโ€™s too easy.โ€

Hunt glanced to Bryce, her eyes tearyย with cold, the tip of her nose bright red. In these temperatures, they wouldnโ€™t last ten moreย minutes before frostbite set in. He and his mate would recover, but Ember and Randall, with their human blood โ€ฆ

โ€œLetโ€™s get this booth warmed up,โ€ Bryce said. She stepped inside and began brushing frost off the switches. โ€œMaybe the heater still works.โ€

Ember gave her daughter a look that said she wasย well aware Bryce and Hunt had avoided addressing her concerns, but stepped inside as well.

They got the heater workingโ€”just one of them. The others were too frosted over to sputter to life. But it was enough to warm the small space and offer her parents a sliver of shelter as Bryce and Hunt again explored the frigid terrain, studying the wall and its gate.

โ€œYou think itโ€™s a trap?โ€ Bryce saidย through the scarf sheโ€™d tugged up over her mouth and nose. Sheโ€™d found some pairs of snow goggles in the booth, and the world was sharp through the stark clarity of the lenses. Was this how it had looked through Huntโ€™s Umbra Mortis helmet?

Hunt said, wearing polarized goggles of his own, โ€œIโ€™ve never known the guard station at the Northern Rift to be empty, so โ€ฆ somethingโ€™s up, for sure.โ€

โ€œMaybeย Apollion did us a favor and sent a few deathstalkers to clear it out.โ€ As she spoke the demon princeโ€™s name, the wind seemed to quiet. โ€œWell, thatโ€™s not spooky at all.โ€

โ€œThis far north,โ€ Hunt said, turning in place to survey the terrain, โ€œmaybe all those bullshit warnings about not speaking his name on this side of the Rift are true.โ€

Bryce didnโ€™t dare test it out again. But she walked to theย lead gates in the wall and laid a gloved hand on them. โ€œI heard the wall and the gates both had white salt built into them.โ€ For protection against Hel.

โ€œHasnโ€™t stopped the demons from slipping through,โ€ Hunt noted, face unreadable with the goggles and his own scarf over his mouth. โ€œI hunted down enough of them to know how fallible the wall is. And the guards, I suppose.โ€

โ€œI hate to imagineย whatโ€™s been getting pastย withoutย guards here.โ€ Hunt said nothing, which wasnโ€™t remotely comforting. โ€œSo how do we get through?โ€ Bryce asked.

โ€œThereโ€™s a button inside the booth,โ€ Hunt said. โ€œNothing fancy.โ€

Bryce nudged him. โ€œEasy-peasy, for once.โ€ A blast of icy wind slammed into her back, as if throwing her toward the wall. Even with the layers of winter gear, she could have sworn the coldย bit her very bones.

โ€œWe should go before we lose the light.โ€ Hunt nodded at the sun already sinking toward the horizon. โ€œDaylightโ€™s only a few hours up here.โ€

โ€œBryce?โ€ her dad called from the booth. โ€œYou guys need to see this.โ€

They found Ember and Randall in front of a flickering monitor.

โ€œThe security footage.โ€ Ember pointed with a shaking gloved finger. Bryce knew the trembling wasnโ€™t fromย cold. Her mom hit a key on the computer and the footage began rolling.

โ€œIs that โ€ฆ,โ€ Bryce breathed.

โ€œWe need to get to the Rift,โ€ Hunt growled.ย โ€œNow.โ€
