Chapter no 69

House of Flame and Shadow (Crescent City, #3)

Ithan knew heโ€™d have no luck convincing a Reaper on his own. At least without risking getting his soul sucked out and eaten. But fortunately, there were plenty of Reapers who would answer Jesiba Rogaโ€™s summons. Unfortunately, one arrived at the morgue within an hour of Jesibaโ€™s request to the Under-King.

Ithan kept reminding himself of every exit, of his strength, of where the knife inย his boot was, of how quickly he could summon claws or shiftโ€”

The male Reaper was relatively fresh, judging by the way heโ€™d struttedโ€”only a hint of a glideโ€”into the morgue. This one seemed inclined to play rock star, with his torn black jeans dangling precariously off his prominent hip bones and an array of tattoos scattered over his unnervingly pale torso. No shirt to be seen. Heโ€™d bothered withย ass-kicking black boots, left partially untied at the tops, and heโ€™d strapped twin black leather bracelets at his wrists.

Gods, Bryce would have had a field day with this guyโ€”his long golden hair wasย veryย carefully mussed. That is, until she beheld the acid-green eyes, and the throat that revealed precisely where his death blow had been. The wound had sealed over, but the scars remained.

โ€œThankย you for coming,โ€ Hypaxia said, standing beside theย examination table with queenly grace. โ€œThis will only take a few moments.โ€

The Reaper glanced between her and Ithan, but sauntered over to the table, hopping on with a thud that set the metal shuddering. โ€œHeard you defected, witchy-witch.โ€ His voice was a hoarse, wicked rasp. It might have been dismissed as a result of the death wound to hisย throat, but it was typical of a Reaper. Exactly how Sigridโ€™s voice had soundedโ€”

โ€œWelcome to the House,โ€ the Reaper continued, bluish lips quirking up in a sneer. He nodded to Ithan. โ€œWhatโ€™s a wolf pup doing here?โ€

Ithan mastered his primal fear of the creature before them and crossed his arms. โ€œWhatโ€™s it to you?โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re Holstrom, right?โ€ That sneer didnโ€™t fade. If this shithead said anythingย about Connorโ€”

โ€œI was in the Aux,โ€ the Reaper said, tapping one of his tattoos. โ€œLion-shifter pack.โ€

Oh shit. Ithan had heard of this guy. A low-level lion whoโ€™d shown up with his pack a few months ago on a routine Aux inspection of a vampyr nest in the Meat Market. The wounds on his neck corresponded with what the vamps had done to the guy. But to have chosen to become a Reaper, in the sameย House as the ones whoโ€™d killed him โ€ฆ

From the gleam in the Reaperโ€™s eyes, Ithan couldnโ€™t help but wonder if he had turned Reaper not to elude true death, but to one day exact vengeance.

Hypaxia approached the Reaper and said, โ€œMay I touch your head?โ€

The Reaper kept his eyes on the former queen. โ€œTouch me all you want, sweetheart.โ€

For fuckโ€™s sake. Ithan suppressed a growl, but Hypaxia remainedย unruffled as she placed her brown hands on his shining golden hair.

Ithan refrained from reaching for the knife in his boot as the Reaper inhaled deeply. Getting a whiff of her scent? Or preparing to eat her spirit? โ€œYour soul smells like rain clouds andย mountain berries.โ€ The creep licked his lips. โ€œAnyone ever tell you that?โ€

How Hypaxia kept her hands on his head, Ithan had no idea. He wasย half inclined to rip the shitheadโ€™s arms out of their sockets and use them to beat the guy senseless.

The Reaper inhaled again. โ€œA little bit of witch, a little bit of necromancer, huh?โ€

โ€œShe needs to concentrate,โ€ Ithan said through his teeth.

The Reaper slid those acid-green eyes over to him. He asked Hypaxia, โ€œAm I distracting you, honey?โ€

She didnโ€™t answer. The expression on her face wasย distant as she focused on what lay within the Reaperโ€™s mind.

The Reaper inhaled deeply again, his eyes rolling back in his head. โ€œGods, your scentโ€™s like fuckingย wineโ€”โ€

โ€œWeโ€™re done, thank you,โ€ Hypaxia said politely, stepping back and making notes on the papers stacked on her desk. โ€œPlease give my regards to your master.โ€

The Reaper stared at her for a long moment, practically feral. Ithanย barely breathed, ready to pounce, even though this lowlife was unkillableโ€”

โ€œIโ€™ll see you around,โ€ the Reaper said, more of a promise than a parting, and hopped off the table. He strutted again for the doors, this time with a bit of that Reaperโ€™s floating gait, as if trying to show off for the witch.

Only when he left did Ithan let out a long breath. โ€œWhat a fucking creep.โ€

Hypaxia leaned againstย the examination table. โ€œYour guess was right, though. He didnโ€™t have the parasite.โ€ She crossed her arms. โ€œI didnโ€™t sense anything like one, anyway. I didnโ€™t sense anything living inside him at all.โ€

โ€œSo what now?โ€

โ€œI compare what I detected in him to what I discovered in your blood. See what stands out. See if I can isolate where inย youย the parasite lies.โ€

Good. At least heโ€™d contributed thatย much.

โ€œHow could you stand it?โ€ Ithan asked, unable to contain his curiosity. โ€œBeing that close to him?โ€

โ€œIโ€™ve had to endure plenty of uncomfortable situations and difficult people in my life,โ€ Hypaxia said, pushing off the table and walking to the computer. She clicked the monitor on. โ€œA lonely, scared Reaper, new to the afterlife, doesnโ€™t bother me.โ€

โ€œLonely? Scared?โ€ Ithan choked on a laugh.

But Hypaxia glanced over a shoulder, her face unreadable. โ€œYou couldnโ€™t see it? What lay beneath the bravado? His clothes and attitude show how desperately heโ€™s trying to cling to his mortal life. Heโ€™s frightened out of his mind.โ€

โ€œYou pity him.โ€

โ€œYes.โ€ She turned back to her computer. โ€œI pity him, and all Reapers.โ€

Sigrid included, no doubt. Guilt tightened his chest, but Ithan said, โ€œMostย half-lifes seem to enjoy terrorizing the rest of us.โ€

โ€œThey might, but their existence is what their name implies: It is half a life. Not true living. It seems sad to me.โ€

Ithan considered. โ€œYouโ€™re โ€ฆ youโ€™re a really good person.โ€ She chuckled. โ€œI mean it,โ€ he insisted. โ€œThe witches are worse off without you.โ€

She glanced over a shoulder again, and this time her eyes were full of sorrow. โ€œThankย you.โ€ She nodded to the door. โ€œI need to focus for a while. Without your, ah โ€ฆ hovering.โ€

He saluted her. โ€œMessage received. Iโ€™ll be down the hall if you need me.โ€

โ€œQueen of all this, huh?โ€

Bryce didnโ€™t stop sorting through the trunks of supplies Fury had brought on the helicopter, even though her friendโ€™s question came with a shit-eating grin.

โ€œDid you get the goggles?โ€ Bryce asked, pushingย past a layer of winter hats. All the snow gear was there, just as sheโ€™d requested. On short notice, Fury had pieced together a remarkable array ofย jackets, pants, hats, gloves, underlayersโ€”everything theyโ€™d need to survive the subzero temperatures of Nena.

Bryce intended to leave Avallen as soon as her parents had a rest from the helicopter journeyโ€”as soon as they were able to get Cooper settledย with Baxian, and process all sheโ€™d told them upon their arrival.

Her parents sat in the grass on the other side of the field, talking quietly, Syrinx lounging in Randallโ€™s lap. So Bryce gave them space, using the time to check the gear Fury had broughtโ€”not that she didnโ€™t trust Fury to have thought of every detail.

But she should check, anyway. Just to make sure that they had all the gear theyย might need. So many things could go wrong, and she was taking her human parents with her, she was really going to do thisโ€”

A slender brown hand touched Bryceโ€™s wrist. โ€œBโ€”you okay?โ€

Bryce looked up at last, finding Juniper standing beside her, a deep frown on her beautiful face. A few feet away, Fury stood with crossed arms, brows high.

Bryce sighed, turning from the three massive trunks thatย would be loaded onto the helicopter looming behind them.

Her friends were safe here. It should have eased something in her chestโ€”a gift from Urd, Hunt had claimedโ€”but seeing them here โ€ฆ

There was a fourth trunk, resting in the grass close to the helicopter. Fury had only been able to gather so much before the quick takeoff from Valbara, but still โ€ฆ there were a considerable number of weaponsย here.

Handguns. Rifles. Knives.

A joke, really, considering that they were going up against six intergalactic, nearly all-powerful beings. Most of the weapons would be for the othersโ€”to buy them any shot at surviving.

Everything else would come down to her.

Fury and Juniper were watching. Waiting. Like they could see all of that on her face. Just as Juniper, that bleak winter, had sensed fromย Bryceโ€™s tone alone that despair had pushed her to the brink.

Juniperโ€”whose last audiomail to Bryce had been so angry, after Bryce had done such an unforgivable thing by calling the director of the Crescent City Ballet. Only love and relief showed on her face now.

Juniper silently opened her arms, and Bryce rushed into them.

Her throat closed up, eyes stinging, at her friendโ€™s warmth, her scent.ย Furyโ€™s scent and arms wrapped around them a moment later, and Bryce shut her eyes, savoring it.

โ€œIโ€™m so sorry you both got dragged into this,โ€ Bryce said hoarsely. โ€œJune, Iโ€™m sorry for all of it. Iโ€™m so fucking sorry.โ€

Juniperโ€™s arms tightened around her. โ€œWeโ€™ve got bigger problems to faceโ€”you and I are good.โ€

Bryce pulled back, glancing between her two friends. Sheโ€™d updated them, and herย parentsโ€”Cooper in towโ€”about as much as she could.

Fury frowned. โ€œI should be coming with you guys. Iโ€™m of more use in the field.โ€

Bryce would have given anything to have someone as talented as Fury watching her back. But this wasnโ€™t about Bryceโ€™s own safety, her own comfort.

โ€œYouโ€™re precisely where you should be,โ€ Bryce insisted. โ€œWhen people hear that Fury Axtarโ€™s guarding Avallen, theyโ€™llย think twice before fucking with this place.โ€

Fury rolled her eyes. โ€œBabysitting.โ€

Bryce shook her head. โ€œItโ€™s not. I need you guys hereโ€”helping any of the people who can make it. Helping Baxian.โ€

โ€œYeah, yeah,โ€ Fury said, jerking her chin toward the rest of their friends, standing on the other side of the helicopter. โ€œIโ€™ll admit, Iโ€™m looking forward to grilling Baxian about him and Danika.โ€

They stared toward the handsome male, who must have sensed their attention and turned from where heโ€™d been talking to Tharion and Ruhn. Baxian winced.

Juniper laughed. โ€œWe wonโ€™t bite!โ€ she called to the Helhound.

โ€œLiar,โ€ Fury muttered, earning another laugh from Juniper.

Baxian wisely went back to his conversation. Though Bryce didnโ€™t fail to notice how Tharion poked the angel shifter in theย side, grinning.

โ€œI canโ€™t believe she never told us about him,โ€ Juniper said quietly, sadly.

โ€œDanika didnโ€™t tell us a lot of stuff,โ€ Bryce said with equal softness.

โ€œNeither did you,โ€ Fury teased, nudging Bryce with an elbow. โ€œAnd again: Queen of Avallen?โ€

Bryce rolled her eyes. โ€œIf you want the job, itโ€™s yours.โ€

โ€œOh, not for all the gold in the world,โ€ Fury said, dark eyes dancing with amusement.ย โ€œThis is your shitshow to run.โ€

Juniper scowled at her girlfriend. โ€œWhat Fury means is that we have your back.โ€

Bryce kissed Juneโ€™s velvet-soft cheek. โ€œThanks.โ€ She looked between her friends again. โ€œIf we donโ€™t make it back โ€ฆโ€

โ€œDonโ€™t think like that, B,โ€ Juniper insisted, but Fury said nothing.

Fury had dealt in the shadows of the empire for years. She was well aware of the odds.

Bryce wentย on, โ€œIf I donโ€™t make it back, youโ€™ll be safe here. The mists will allow any true refugee throughโ€”but Iโ€™d still keep an eye out for any Asteri agents. There are plenty of natural resources to sustain everyone, and yeah, thereโ€™s no firstlight to fuel your tech, butโ€”โ€

Juniper laid a hand on Bryceโ€™s wrist again. โ€œWe got this, B. You go do โ€ฆ what you need to do.โ€

โ€œSave the world,โ€ Fury said, chuckling.

Bryce grimaced. โ€œYeah. Basically.โ€

โ€œWe got this,โ€ Juniper repeated, hand tightening on Bryceโ€™s wrist. โ€œAnd so do you, Bryce.โ€

Bryce took out her phone. Popped it free of the case, revealing the photograph sheโ€™d tucked in there of them. Of how it had been when there were four. โ€œKeep this for me,โ€ she said, handing it to Fury. โ€œI donโ€™t want to lose it.โ€

Fury studied the photoโ€”how happy theyโ€™dย all been, howย seemingly young. She folded Bryceโ€™s fingers around the photo. โ€œTake it.โ€ Furyโ€™s eyes shone bright. โ€œSo weโ€™ll all be with you.โ€

Bryceโ€™s throat tightened again, but she slid the photo into the back pocket of her jeans. And allowed herself to look at June and Fury one last time, to memorize every line of their faces.

Friends worth fighting for. Worth dying for.

Ember Quinlan wasย waiting on the hill where Bryce and her friends had risen from beneath the Cave of Princes.

Ember peered at the grassy ground, face tight. No trace of the caves remained. โ€œSo his body is just โ€ฆ under there.โ€

Bryce nodded. She knew who her mother meant. โ€œRuhn decapitated him and, um, impaled his head before the ground swallowed him. Thereโ€™s no chance of him coming back.โ€

Ember didnโ€™t smile asย she stared at the earth, the Autumn Kingโ€™s corpse far beneath it.

โ€œI spent so long running from him, fearing him. To imagine a world where he doesnโ€™t exist โ€ฆโ€ Her mom lifted her eyes to Bryceโ€™s face, and at the pain and relief in them, Bryce threw her arms around her and held tight.

โ€œIโ€™m so proud of you,โ€ Ember whispered. โ€œNot for โ€ฆ dealing with him, but for all of it. Iโ€™m so, so proud, Bryce.โ€

Bryce couldnโ€™t stop the stinging in her eyes. โ€œI could only do it because I was raised by a badass mom.โ€

Ember chuckled, pulling back to clasp Bryceโ€™s face in both hands. โ€œYou look different.โ€

โ€œGood different or bad different?โ€

โ€œGood. Like a functioning adult.โ€

Bryce smiled. โ€œThanks, Mom.โ€

Ember wrapped her arms around Bryce and squeezed. โ€œBut it doesnโ€™t matter if youโ€™re Queen of the Faeย or the Universe or whatever crap โ€ฆโ€ Bryce laughed at that, but Ember said, โ€œYouโ€™ll always be my sweet baby.โ€

Bryce hugged her mother tightly, all thoughts of the hateful male lying dead far below them fading away.

In the distance, the helicopter started roaring again, this time piloted by Randall, thanks to his compulsory years in the peregrini army. All humans were forced to serve. The skillsย heโ€™d learned during those years remained useful, especially now, but Bryce knew the experience weighed on his soul.

Bryce looked up at last from her motherโ€™s embrace and saw Hunt motioning for them to get on boardโ€”obnoxiously tapping his wrist, as if to say,ย Time is of the essence, Quinlan!

Bryce scowled, knowing that with his angel-sharp eyes he could see it from this distance, but she heldย her mom for another moment. Breathed in her momโ€™s smell, so familiar and calming. Like home.

Ember hugged her back, content to be thereโ€”to hold her daughter for one moment longer.

This was what really mattered in the end.
