Chapter no 66

House of Flame and Shadow (Crescent City, #3)

Back in his humanoid form, Ithan sat across from Bryce and Hunt in the grass, unable to get words out. Hypaxia, seated beside him, gave him space to think.

Beyond Bryce sat Ruhn, Flynn, Dec, and Tharionโ€”and Lidia and Baxian. Along with a female who was apparently Tharionโ€™s wife and Flynnโ€™s sister.

Some crazy shit had happened. Ithan knew that. But they didnโ€™t offer any explanations, insteadย waiting for him to get into why heโ€™d come here. What had happened.

His throat became unbearably tight.

โ€œI โ€ฆโ€ They were all staring at him. Waiting. โ€œI need Sofie Renastโ€™s body.โ€

โ€œWell,โ€ Hunt said, whistling, โ€œthat wasnโ€™t what I expected to hear.โ€

Ithan lifted pleading eyes to the Umbra Mortis. โ€œJesiba said King Morven has the bodyโ€”โ€

โ€œHad the body,โ€ Ruhn amended, crossing his arms. His tattoosย looked like theyโ€™d been put through a paper shredder. Ithan had noticed that immediately upon seeing his friends, upon hugging them all so tightly theyโ€™d complained about his grip. Ruhn went on, โ€œThe body is now technically Bryceโ€™s.โ€

Ithan shook his head, not understanding.

Hunt drawled, โ€œMorven is dead, and Bryce is Queen of Avallen.โ€

Ithan just blinked at Bryce, who was watching him. Carefully.ย Like she knew something hadโ€”

โ€œThe Meadows,โ€ he blurted. Had they heard about it here? Had theyโ€”

โ€œWe know,โ€ Flynn said.

โ€œFucking bastards,โ€ Tharion murmured.

Bryce only asked Ithan, โ€œHow bad?โ€

Ithan couldnโ€™t talk about the small bodies, so many of themโ€”

โ€œAs one might expect,โ€ Hypaxia answered grimly, โ€œand then some.โ€ Heavy silence fell.

โ€œWhatever took you away from helping the city,โ€ Lidiaย said, eyes on her sister, โ€œmust be important indeed. Why do you need Sofieโ€™s body?โ€

Again, they all looked at him. And he couldnโ€™t contain his misery as he said, โ€œBecause I fucked up.โ€

It all came out. How heโ€™d found an alternate heir to the Fendyr line, freed her from the Astronomer โ€ฆ and then killed her.

None of it was news to Tharion, Flynn, or Dec. But judging from the way Bryce and Ruhnย were glowering at the trio โ€ฆ Apparently, they had forgotten to mention this information in the chaos of the last few days.

How theyโ€™d forgotten to mention the thing that had literally shredded apart Ithanโ€™s life was beyond him, but he didnโ€™t dwell on it. He plowed on to the part of his story that was news for all of them: How he and Hypaxia had attempted to raise Sigrid. And now the Fendyr heirย was a Reaper.

When he reached the end of his account, they were all staring at him wide-eyed. No one more so than Bryce, who hadnโ€™t said anything when heโ€™d spoken of an alternative to Sabine, someone Danika might have liked.

Ithan finished, โ€œSo if Sofieโ€™s body is intactโ€”โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not,โ€ Bryce said quietly.

Something crumpled in Ithanโ€™s chest as he met her whiskey-colored eyes.

โ€œMorvenโ€™s castleย collapsed,โ€ Bryce said sadly. โ€œSofieโ€™s body is underneath tons of rubble, even if itย isย intact.โ€

Ithan put his face in his hands and breathed hard.

Flynn put a consoling arm around his shoulders, squeezing. โ€œMaybe thereโ€™s another wayโ€”โ€

โ€œWe needed a thunderbird,โ€ Ithan said through his hands. There was no fixing this. No undoing it. Heโ€™d brought this upon an innocent wolf, upon his peopleโ€”

โ€œLook,โ€ Bryce said, and the gentleness in her tone almost killed him. She blew out a long breath. โ€œAn alternate Fendyr heir would have been amazing. But โ€ฆโ€

Ithan lowered his hands from his face. โ€œButย what?โ€

Huntโ€™s eyes flashed at Ithanโ€™s snarl. But Bryce didnโ€™t back down as she said, โ€œWe have bigger problems right now. And time isnโ€™t our ally.โ€

โ€œI killed her,โ€ Ithan said, voice cracking. โ€œIย fuckingย killedย herโ€”โ€

But Athalar said to Hypaxia, โ€œRigelus collected some of my lightningโ€”for a similar purpose, I think.โ€ Bryce started, as if this was news to her. โ€œAre you sure it wouldnโ€™t help with Sigrid?โ€

โ€œIt might be worth a try,โ€ Hypaxia admitted, โ€œbut I donโ€™t have any of the supplies Iโ€™d need to contain your sort of power.โ€

Ruhnโ€™s head lifted. โ€œLike a bunch of crystals?โ€

They allย turned to the prince, but he was looking at Lidia. The Hind explained, โ€œWe found a cache of them in the archives.โ€

Ruhn added, โ€œRigelus used one to grab Athalarโ€™s power in the dungeons. Would it work for you, too?โ€

Hypaxia nodded slowly and said to Hunt, โ€œI wouldnโ€™t require much.โ€

Bryce glanced around at the others. Ruhn took her meaning and motioned to his friends. โ€œCome on. Letโ€™s grab thoseย crystals from the archives. Hopefully itโ€™s still standing.โ€

Flynn, Dec, Lidia, Baxian, and Tharionโ€”his wife in towโ€”headed down the hill with Ruhn. Only Tharion glanced back, justย once, his eyes full of pity. Like the mer understood what it was to have fucked up so royally. To regret.

But Bryce grabbed Ithanโ€™s hand, bringing his attention back to her. โ€œWhatโ€™s done is done, Ithan.โ€

โ€œJesiba saidย the same thing,โ€ he said glumly.

โ€œAnd sheโ€™s right,โ€ Bryce said. At her side, Athalar nodded. But Bryce motioned with a hand to Hypaxia. โ€œThe whole fucking worldโ€™s changing so rapidlyโ€”weโ€™re all changing, faster than we can process. For Cthonaโ€™s sake, Hypaxia isnโ€™t even queen anymore. Have either of you really reflected on that?โ€ A punch of guilt went through Ithan. Heโ€™d been so focused on himselfย that he hadnโ€™t thought to check in with the witch. But Hypaxiaโ€™s face remained grave, determined. And Bryce went on to Ithan, โ€œSo look: you killed Sigrid, and sheโ€™s a Reaper, and I think itโ€™s โ€ฆ really admirable that youโ€™re trying to raise herโ€”โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t patronize me,โ€ he snarled, and again Athalar threw him that warning glare.

โ€œIโ€™m not,โ€ Bryce said. She was the Queen of Avallen, and Ithan couldย see it in her eyes: the leader glimmering there. โ€œPart of why I love you is because youโ€™ll stop at nothing to do the right thing.โ€

โ€œTrying to do the right thing led me to the debacle with Sigrid,โ€ he said, shaking his head in disgust.

โ€œMaybe,โ€ Bryce said, and glanced at Hypaxia. โ€œBut the two of you โ€ฆ I need your help. I have to believe that Urd sent you here for this.โ€

โ€œFor what?โ€ Hypaxia said,ย head angling.

Bryce and Hunt swapped glances. The angel motioned to his mate, as if to say,ย Your story to tell.

โ€œI, uh,โ€ Bryce said, pulling at some blades of grass, โ€œhave a lot to update you guys about.โ€

โ€œYou werenโ€™t kidding about the big update,โ€ Ithan said when Bryce had finished.

โ€œWhere do we factor into this, though?โ€ Hypaxia asked. โ€œIfย youโ€™re thinking to raise an army to aid Hel, Iย have no sway with the witches, and Ithan wouldnโ€™t be able to muster the wolvesโ€”โ€

โ€œNo armies from Midgard,โ€ Bryce said. โ€œWe donโ€™t have the time for that, anyway.โ€

Hypaxia pulled on a tightly coiled curl. โ€œWhat, then?โ€

Bryceโ€™s eyes seemed to glow. โ€œI need you to make an antidote for the Asteriโ€™s parasite.โ€

Hypaxia blinked slowly. That bit of Bryceโ€™s story had been the hardest to swallow. Thatย they were all infected by something in the water, their magic cut off at the knees.

Bryce pushed on, โ€œYou figured out an antidote for the synth, Hypaxia. I need you to do it again. Help us level up before we take on the Asteri. Get us free of their restraints.โ€

โ€œYou place an awful lot of faith in my abilities. Iโ€™ll need to study the parasite before I can even start mapping out the propertiesย of an antidoteโ€”โ€

โ€œWe donโ€™t have time for the full-blown scientific method,โ€ Bryce said.

โ€œIโ€™d hesitate to give you anything that hadnโ€™t been fully tested,โ€ Hypaxia countered.

โ€œWe donโ€™t have that luxury,โ€ Athalar said firmly. โ€œAnything you can rig up, even if itโ€™s temporary, even if it just holds the parasite at bay for a bit โ€ฆโ€

โ€œI donโ€™t know if thatโ€™s possible,โ€ Hypaxia said, but Ithan couldย see the ideas gleaming in her eyes. โ€œAnd Iโ€™d need a lab. Considering the state of Avallen after your โ€ฆ claiming of it, I donโ€™t think thereโ€™s anything here I could use.โ€

โ€œAnd no power, anyway,โ€ Bryce said. โ€œSo youโ€™ll have to head back to the Lunathion House of Flame and Shadowโ€”it seems like you guys will be hidden and protected there. Especially if Jesibaโ€™s around.โ€

Ithan hadnโ€™t told Bryce aboutย whoโ€”whatโ€”Jesiba really was. That was Jesibaโ€™s secret to tell.

Her words settled. Ithan said, โ€œWhat do you meanย you guys? I donโ€™t know shit about science. I canโ€™t help Hypaxia with this.โ€

โ€œYou know how to fight,โ€ Athalar said. โ€œAnd defend. Hypaxia will need someone to guard her while she works.โ€

Ithan turned to Bryce, who was watching him with a grim expression. โ€œBut Sigridโ€”โ€

โ€œWe need thatย antidote, Ithan,โ€ Bryce said gently, but firmly. โ€œMore than anything. Hunt will give you the lightning for Sigrid, but we need that antidote first.โ€ She added to Hypaxia, โ€œAs fast as you can make it.โ€

Hypaxia and Bryce stared at each other for a long moment. โ€œVery well,โ€ Hypaxia said, inclining her head.

Ithan closed his eyes. To abandon his quest, to leave Sigrid as a Reaper โ€ฆ

But his friendsย needed him. They were asking for his help. To deny them, even if it was to save Sigrid โ€ฆ Heโ€™d already screwed up Sigridโ€™s life. He wouldnโ€™t do the same to his friends.

So Ithan opened his eyes and said, โ€œWhen do we head back to Crescent City?โ€

Bryceโ€™s face remained grim as she said, โ€œRight now.โ€

โ€œNow?โ€ Hypaxia said, the first bit of shock sheโ€™d shown.

โ€œThat boatโ€™s still waiting for you,โ€ Athalarย said, pointing to the ocean in the distance. โ€œWeโ€™ll go get the crystals from the others, and Iโ€™ll fire up the stones. Once I bring them back here, get on that boat and sail for Lunathion.โ€

โ€œAnd ifโ€”whenโ€”I come up with an antidote to the parasite?โ€ Hypaxia asked Bryce and Hunt. โ€œHow do I contact you?โ€

โ€œCall us,โ€ Bryce said. โ€œIf you canโ€™t reach us, get the antidote to the Eternal City. Thereโ€™sย a fleet of mech-suits on Mount Hermonโ€”hide near there, and weโ€™ll find you.โ€

โ€œWhen, though?โ€

Bryceโ€™s face hardened. โ€œYouโ€™ll know when itโ€™s too late to help us.โ€

Ithan started, โ€œBryceโ€”โ€

But Bryce nodded toward the glimmering sea. โ€œAs fast as you can,โ€ she repeated to the former witch-queen. โ€œIโ€™m begging you.โ€

With that, she walked to Athalar, and he leapt into the skies, flying them in theย direction the others had headed.

There was no chance to talk to Tharion or Flynn or Dec. Noย chance to even say goodbye. From the way Hypaxia was watching the angel and Bryce vanish toward the distant ruins, he suspected she was thinking the same thing about Lidia.

Twenty minutes later, Bryce and Athalar were back, half a dozen quartz crystals sizzling in the angelโ€™s hands. Bottled lightning.

Hypaxia pocketed them, promising to use them well. Bryce kissed her cheek, then Ithanโ€™s.

Once, he would have done anything for that kiss. But now it left him hollow, reeling.

Athalar only clapped Ithan on the shoulder before launching skyward with Bryce again, soon no more than a speck against the blue.

When they were alone, Hypaxia motioned to the path theyโ€™d taken up from the beach. โ€œWe mustย rise to meet this challenge, Ithan,โ€ she said, her voice sure. She patted the lightning-filled crystals now glowing through the pockets of her dark blue robes.

With that, she started off for the boat and the task before them.

Ithan lingered for a moment longer. Heโ€™d failed in this quest, too. Heโ€™d had a second shot at fixing Sigrid, and heโ€™d failed. It was important to help their friendsโ€”andย all of Midgardโ€”but the decision weighed on him.

Heโ€™d always thought of himself as a good guy, but maybe he wasnโ€™t. Maybe heโ€™d been deluding himself.

He didnโ€™t know where that left him.

Ithan followed Hypaxia, turning his back on Avallen and the sliver of hope it had offered. To have the lightning in hand, but to have to postpone any effort to help Sigrid โ€ฆ

He had no choice but to keep puttingย one foot in front of the other.

Maybe at some point, heโ€™d stop leaving a trail of absolute destruction in his wake.
