Chapter no 61

House of Flame and Shadow (Crescent City, #3)

โ€œSo,โ€ Bryce said slowly, as if letting the words sink in, โ€œwhy not use the Horn to open the portal to nowhere?โ€

โ€œBecause no one knows what that isโ€”whereย it is. The sword and knife are pinpointed to its location, somehow. They are the only way to get to that nowhere-place.โ€

Huntโ€™s head spun. Hel, his head had been spinning nonstop for the past ten minutes. But Bryce was having none of it.ย โ€œWhat if I never got the knife back? What if I never came to Avallen? What if I never got the chance, or refused to come here, or whatever?โ€

Apollion and Thanatos shifted in their seats, either bored or on edge, but Aidas continued speaking. โ€œI do not know how Helena hoped you would be able to retrieve the knife from her home world. As for Avallen โ€ฆ Helena wanted me to nudge you along. But youย harbored such hatred for the Faeโ€”you would never have trusted me if I had pushed you to travel to their stronghold.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s true,โ€ Bryce muttered.

โ€œMy brothers and I had doubts about Helenaโ€™s plans. We continued to rest our hopes on reopening the Northern Rift so that we could continue the fight against the Asteri. If someone like you, a world-walker, did come along and Avallen was somehowย notย accessible for you to claim Theiaโ€™s power, we still needed a way to โ€ฆ fuel you up, as it were.โ€ He faced Hunt at last.

Hunt could barely breathe. Hereโ€”after all this waiting โ€ฆ here were the answers.

โ€œYou are the son of my two brothers only in the vaguest sense,โ€ Aidas said.

Something in Huntโ€™s chest easedโ€”even as his stomach roiled.

โ€œThanatos refused to help at first,โ€ Apollion added,ย glaring at his brother.

โ€œI did not approve of the plan,โ€ Thanatos snapped, gripping his helmet tight. โ€œI still do not.โ€

โ€œMy brother,โ€ Aidas said, nodding to Thanatos, โ€œhas long excelled at crafting things.โ€

โ€œFunny,โ€ Bryce said, โ€œI didnโ€™t take you for a quilter.โ€

Hunt gave her an incredulous look, but Aidas smiled before he said to Hunt, โ€œDuring the First Wars, as you call them, Thanatos helpedย Apollion breed new types of demons to fight on our side. The kristallos, designed to hunt for the Hornโ€”so we might find a way into Midgard unobstructed. The Shepherd. The deathstalkers.โ€ A nod to Hunt, like he knew of the scar down Huntโ€™s back from one of them. โ€œThey were but a few of my brothersโ€™ creations.โ€

Bryce shook her head. โ€œBut the kristallos venom can negate magic. If you knew how toย do that, why did you not use it against the Asteri in the war?โ€

โ€œWe tried,โ€ Aidas said. โ€œIt did not have the same effect on their powers.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m sorry,โ€ Hunt interrupted, โ€œbut are you implying that I was made byย you two assholes? As some sort of pet?โ€ He pointed to Thanatos, then to Apollion.

โ€œNot a pet,โ€ Apollion said darkly. โ€œA weapon.โ€ He nodded to Bryce. โ€œFor her, whenever she might comeย along.โ€

โ€œBut you didnโ€™t know the timelines would overlap,โ€ Bryce said a bit breathlessly.

โ€œNo. There were previous experiments,โ€ Apollion said. โ€œWe hoped they would spread and multiply throughout Midgard, but the Asteri caught wind of our plan and removed them.โ€

โ€œThe thunderbirds,โ€ Bryce said, gaping. โ€œYou guys made them, too?โ€

โ€œWe did,โ€ Aidas said matter-of-factly, โ€œand sent them throughย the cracks in the Northern Rift. But they were hunted to near-extinction generations ago. Blessing an angel with their power, a perfect soldier โ€ฆ it was a gift of poisoned honey. The Asteri believed they had somehow, through their selective breeding of the malakim, finally achieved a flawless soldier to serve them. That it was their own brilliance that brought someone like Hunt Athalar into the world.โ€

โ€œBut you rebelled,โ€ Apollion said to Hunt with no small hint of pride. โ€œYou were too valuable to kill, but they wanted you broken. Your servitude was that attempt.โ€

Hunt could barely feel his body.

โ€œCan we please rewind for a moment?โ€ Bryce cut in. โ€œYou guys made the thunderbirds to complement my powerโ€”in case I never got the sword and knife, and if I ever needed a boost to open the Rift. Butย when they were hunted down, you โ€ฆ made Hunt, and then I was born โ€ฆโ€

โ€œAthalar was already enslaved by then,โ€ Aidas said, โ€œbut we kept a close watch.โ€

Apollion nodded to Hunt. โ€œWhy do you think youโ€™re so adept at hunting demons? Itโ€™s in your bloodโ€”part ofย meย is in your blood.โ€

Nausea clawed its way up Huntโ€™s throat. The thought of owing anything at all to the Prince of the Pit โ€ฆ

โ€œJust as heย gave over some of his essence for the kristallos,โ€ Thanatos said, โ€œso he gave something to me for you. His Helfire.โ€

โ€œHelfire?โ€ Bryce demanded.

โ€œThe lightning,โ€ Thanatos said, waving an irritated hand. โ€œCapable of killing almost anything. Even an Asteri.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s how you killed Sirius?โ€ Bryce asked. โ€œWith your โ€ฆ Helfire?โ€

โ€œYes,โ€ Apollion said, then added to Hunt, โ€œYour name was a nod to that,ย whispered in your motherโ€™s ear as you were born. Orion โ€ฆ master of Sirius.โ€

โ€œClever,โ€ Hunt snapped, then demanded, โ€œWaitโ€”my lightning can kill the Asteri?โ€ Hope bloomed, bright and beautiful in his chest.

โ€œNo,โ€ Apollion said. โ€œIt is โ€ฆ diluted from my own. It could harm them, but not kill them. I believe your motherโ€™s angelic blood tempered my power.โ€

That hope withered. And something darkerย took its place as he asked, โ€œHow did my mother play into this?โ€ He could handle some genetic meddling, butโ€”

โ€œThere was a scientist at the Asteri Archives,โ€ Aidas said. โ€œAn angel who was delving into the origins of the thunderbirds, how strange their power was. He named the project after a near-forgotten god of storms.โ€

โ€œProject Thurr,โ€ Bryce said. โ€œWas Danika investigating it, too? I found mentionsย of it, after she died.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t know,โ€ Aidas said, โ€œbut the angel was researching thunderbirds at the behest of the Asteri, who worried they might return. It led him to us instead. When we told him the truth, he offered to help in whatever way he could. Thanatos was finishing up his work then. And with a male volunteer, only a female to breed with was needed.โ€

Hunt couldnโ€™t breathe. Bryce laidย a hand on his knee.

โ€œYour father knew your mother briefly,โ€ Aidas said. โ€œAnd he knew having a partner would help lift her from her poverty. He had every intention of staying. Of leaving behind his life and raising you in secret.โ€

Hunt could barely ask, โ€œWhat happened?โ€

โ€œThe mystics told Rigelus of your fatherโ€™s connection to us. They didnโ€™t discover everythingโ€”nothing about you or your mother.ย Only that he had been speaking to us. Rigelus had him brought in, tortured, and executed.โ€

Huntโ€™s heart stalled.

โ€œHe didnโ€™t break,โ€ Apollion said with something like kindness. โ€œHe never mentioned your mother, or her pregnancy. The Asteri never knew you were tied to him in any way.โ€

โ€œWhat โ€ฆ what was his name?โ€

โ€œHyrieus,โ€ Aidas answered. โ€œHe was a good male, Hunt Athalar. As you are.โ€

Bryceย squeezed his knee, her hand so warmโ€”or was he unnaturally cold? โ€œOkay, so Hunt was made to be a backup battery for meโ€”โ€

โ€œCan I do the same for Ruhn, then?โ€ Hunt interrupted.

โ€œNo,โ€ Thanatos said. โ€œThe princeโ€™s light, his affinity for these thin places, isnโ€™t strong enough. Not like hers.โ€

Hunt gripped Bryceโ€™s hand atop his knee. โ€œIs it in my DNA that Bryce and I are mates? Was that engineered,ย too?โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ Aidas said quickly, โ€œthat was never intended. I think that was left to higher powers. Whatever they may be.โ€

Hunt turned to Bryce and found nothing but love in her eyes. He couldnโ€™t stand it.

Horror cracked through him, as chilled as hoarfrost. Heโ€™d been created by these males to give and to suffer, and where the fuck did that leave him? Who the fuck did that make him?

โ€œOkay,โ€ย Bryce said, โ€œHelfire and starfire: a potent combination. But Helena left all this shit to help end this conflict. It sounds likeย you guysย just want me to open a gods-damned door for you to come in and save the day instead.โ€

โ€œIs it so bad,โ€ Thanatos purred, โ€œto have us do your dirty work?โ€

Bryce glowered at him. โ€œThis is my world. I want to fight for it.โ€

โ€œThen fight alongside us,โ€ Thanatosย challenged.

Tense silence stretched between them. Hunt had no idea how to even begin processing this insanity. But that cold in his veins โ€ฆ that felt good. Numbing.

โ€œI could have used a bit more time to prepare,โ€ Bryce muttered.

Aidas only shook his head. โ€œYou werenโ€™t ready before. And what if you had told the wrong person? You know what the Asteri do to those who challenge their divinity.ย I could not risk it. Risk you. I had to wait for you to find the answers for yourself. But havenโ€™t I told you from the start to find me? That I will help you? That is what Apollion was attempting to do, too, in his misguided way: to ready you both for all thisโ€”to battle the Asteri.โ€

โ€œBut how,โ€ Hunt asked, fighting past that numbing, blissfulย chill in his chest, โ€œdid you kick the Asteri out ofย Hel the first time?โ€

โ€œThey had trouble feeding off our magic,โ€ Thanatos said, voice thick with disgust. โ€œAnd found that our powers rivaled their own. They fled before we could kill them.โ€

Bryce swallowed audibly as she surveyed Apollion. โ€œAnd you reallyย ateย Sirius? Like, ingested her?โ€

But it was Aidas who answered, pride flaring on his face. Apollion slew her with his Helfire when she attackedย himโ€”he pulled her burning heart from her chest and ate it.โ€

Hunt shuddered. But Bryce said, โ€œHow is that even possible?โ€

โ€œI am darkness itself,โ€ Apollion said softly. โ€œTrue darkness. The kind that exists in the bowels of a black hole.โ€

Huntโ€™s bones quaked. The male wasnโ€™t boasting.

โ€œSo why canโ€™t you just โ€ฆ eat the rest of them?โ€ Bryce asked.

โ€œIt requires proximity,โ€ Aidas said. โ€œAnd the Asteriย are well aware of my brotherโ€™s talents. They will avoid him at all costs.โ€

The princes flickered, like they were on a screen that had glitched.

โ€œWeโ€™re running low on time,โ€ Thanatos said. โ€œThe black salt is wearing off.โ€

Bryce focused on Apollion. โ€œYou guys have been telling me nonstop about having your armies ready to go.โ€ She gestured to the temple, the dead city beyond. โ€œThis place looksย pretty empty.โ€

Apollionโ€™s eyes grew ever darker. โ€œWe have allowed you to see only a fraction of Hel. Our lands and armies are elsewhere. They are ready.โ€

โ€œSo if I open the Northern Rift with the Horn โ€ฆ,โ€ Bryce said. Hunt cleared his throat in warning. โ€œAll seven of you and your armies will come through?โ€

โ€œThe three of us,โ€ Aidas amended. โ€œOur four other brothers are currently engaged in otherย conflicts, helping other worlds.โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t realize you guys were, like, intergalactic saviors,โ€ Bryce said.

Aidasโ€™s mouth quirked upward. She could have sworn Apollionโ€™s did, too.

โ€œBut yes,โ€ Aidas went on, โ€œopening the Northern Rift is the only way for our armies to fully and quickly enter Midgard.โ€

โ€œAfter what happened this spring,โ€ Hunt said to his mate, โ€œyou trust them not to fuckingย eatย everyone?โ€

โ€œThose were our pets,โ€ Aidas insisted, โ€œnot our armies. And they have been severely punished for it. They will stay in line this time, and follow our orders on the battlefield.โ€

Bryce glanced to Hunt, but he couldnโ€™t read the expression on her face. The princes flickered once more, the temple shimmering and paling. A tug pulled at Huntโ€™s gut, yanking him back toward the body heโ€™dย left in Avallen.

โ€œIโ€™ll think about it,โ€ Bryce answered.

โ€œThis is no game, girl,โ€ Thanatos snapped.

Bryce leveled a cool look at the Prince of the Ravine. โ€œIโ€™m sick and tired of people usingย girlย as an insult.โ€

Thanatos opened his mouth to respond, but abruptly vanishedโ€”his connection had been severed.

Apollion said to Hunt, โ€œDo not squander the gifts that have been given to youโ€”by me, byย my brother.โ€ His gaze drifted to the halo on Huntโ€™s brow. โ€œNo true son of Hel can be caged.โ€

Then he was gone, too.

Son of Hel.ย Huntโ€™s very soul iced over at the thought.

Only Aidas remained, seeming to cling to the connection as he spoke to Bryce, his blue eyes intense on her face. โ€œIf you find that final piece of Theiaโ€™s power โ€ฆ if the cost of uniting the sword and knife is too much, Bryceย Quinlan, then donโ€™t do it. Choose life.โ€ He glanced to Hunt. โ€œChoose each other. I have lived with the alternative for millenniaโ€”the loss never gets easier to bear.โ€

Bryce reached a ghostly hand toward Aidas, but the Prince of the Chasm was gone.

And all of Hel with him.
