Chapter no 48

House of Flame and Shadow (Crescent City, #3)

Bryce didnโ€™t know who to focus on: Sathia Flynn bristling with fury in Morvenโ€™s throne room, or Tristanโ€™s shocked face as he processed the scene before them. Bryce opted for the latter, especially as Flynn snapped at the King of Avallen, โ€œWhat do you mean,ย trouble?โ€

Morven drawled, โ€œMany of the Valbaran Fae sense โ€ฆ unrest on the horizon, and have been seeking shelter within my lands.โ€ Thoseย serpentine shadows writhed around his neck, over his shoulders, with unnerving menace. The kingโ€™s shadows, the Murder Twinsโ€™ โ€ฆ they felt different from Ruhnโ€™s: wilder, meaner. Ruhnโ€™s shadows were gentle, stealthy night; theirs were the dark of lightless caves.

โ€œIf you pitched this place as a luxury vacation, youโ€™re about to get a bunch of one-star reviews,โ€ Bryce muttered, earning a chuckle fromย Tharion. She didnโ€™t smile at the mer, though. Heโ€™d added another nearly all-powerful ruler to their list of enemiesโ€”she didnโ€™t want to talk to him right now. From the way Tharionโ€™s chuckle quickly died off, he knew she wasnโ€™t happy.

So Bryce watched as Flynn, dead serious perhaps for the first time in his life, said to the Stag King, voice dripping with disdain, โ€œLet me guess, my parents cameย running right over.โ€ He glancedย around the throne room. โ€œWhereโ€™s my oh-so-brave father? And everyone else, for that matter?โ€

Morvenโ€™s face might as well have been carved from stone. โ€œA select few have been allowed in. Most have been sent back to Lunathion. But for those who remain here, there is a price to be paid, of course.โ€

Flynn slowly turned toward his sister. โ€œWhat did you promise him?โ€ย Pure rage and a hint of fear laced his question. But Flynn didnโ€™t go for the female or the twins holding her.

Bryce sized them up, and found both males already smiling at her. And then, deep in her mind, twin dark shadows snarled, readying to strikeโ€”

She incinerated them with a mental wall of starlight.

The twins hissed, one of them blinking as if that light had physically blinded him. Bryceย bared her teeth, and kept that shining wall in her mind. A second later, there was a polite tap against it and Ruhn said,ย Keep this up. No matter what.

Tell Hunt and the others to put up a wall as well,ย Bryce replied, glaring daggers at the twins.

Already did,ย Ruhn replied.ย You should see the lightning around Athalarโ€™s mind. He burned their probes into crisps.

Yuck. Donโ€™t sayย probes.

Ruhnย snorted, and his presence faded from her mind just as Morven continued, โ€œSathia has promised me nothing. In fact, she has refused to pay my asking price. A generous one, at that: her choice between the males who stand beside her. And as a female has no worth here beyond the offspring she might bear Avallen, I donโ€™t see a reason why your sister should remain in this haven another moment.โ€

Morvenโ€™sย words sank in. โ€œIโ€™m sorry,โ€ Bryce said, glancing between Sathiaโ€™s outraged, pretty face and the Stag King and his feral shadows, โ€œbut to clarify: Are you saying youโ€™re requiring any females who seek refuge here toย marry?โ€

โ€œIt would be unsafe for so many unwed females to be running about without a male relative or husband,โ€ Morven said, picking at an invisible fleck of dirt on his night-blackย pants.

โ€œYeah,โ€ Bryce said, โ€œthe gods know what would happen if all us females were unsupervised. Absolute anarchy. Cities would crumble.โ€

But Flynn said to Morven, โ€œSo bring their brothers and husbands over.โ€

Bryce glared at him, but Morven declared, โ€œI have no need for more males in this land.โ€

Bryce ground her teeth hard enough to hurt. This was the male whoโ€™d agreed with her father thatย Bryce and Cormac should marry, injecting more power and dignity into the Fae royal line.

Flynn said, โ€œAnd my parents?โ€

Morven sniffed. โ€œI have allowed Lord and Lady Hawthorne to remain here, as our ties date back to the First Wars. They are currently residing at my private hunting lodge up north.โ€

โ€œSo send Sathia to my dad,โ€ Flynn snapped.

โ€œHe wonโ€™t,โ€ Sathia said at last. Though her Fae voiceย was soft and cultured, Bryce didnโ€™t miss the backbone of steel running through it. โ€œItโ€™s either marry here, or go back to Lunathion.โ€

โ€œSo go back,โ€ Flynn ordered his sister.

Sathia slowly shook her head. โ€œItโ€™s not safe.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™ve got your cushy villa,โ€ Ruhn said with unusual harshness. โ€œYouโ€™ll be fine.โ€

Sathia shook her head again, gaze fixing on her brother. โ€œItโ€™s not safe because ofย you.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ Flynn blurted.

โ€œWord has spread,โ€ Morven said from his antler-and-shadow throne, โ€œof your assistance in that oneโ€™sโ€โ€”a nod toward Ruhnโ€”โ€œescape. Along with the escape of two other enemies of the empire.โ€ A flick of his cold eyes to Baxian and Hunt, who glared back with impressive menace. โ€œThe entire Hawthorne family is now wanted by the Asteri for questioning.โ€

โ€œThey want to kill us toย punish you,โ€ Sathia burst out, pointing a damning finger at Flynn. โ€œWe had to leave in the middle of the night, when we got an alert that the 33rd was coming to bring us in. These clothes are the only ones I have with me.โ€

โ€œWhat a sacrifice for you,โ€ Flynn sneered. But Bryce caught theย guilt darkening his eyes. Declan had already pulled out his phone, no doubt to check on his family and Marcโ€”

โ€œThereโ€™s no reception here, thanks to the mists,โ€ Sathia said to Declan.

The maleโ€™s face paled, and he muttered, โ€œI forgot.โ€

But Sathia added quietly, โ€œI put in a call to your parents before we left. They said theyโ€™d get in touch with your boyfriend, too.โ€

Flynn gaped at her, but Declan bowed his head in thanks.

โ€œWhat?โ€ Sathia glared at her brother. โ€œYou think Iโ€™m that much of a monster?โ€

Flynn gave her another sneer that said,ย Yes, and Bryce stepped in to spare everyone from their bickering. โ€œOkay,โ€ she said to Morven, โ€œso youโ€™re insisting that Flynnโ€™s sister marry one of โ€ฆ these creeps?โ€ Bryce gestured to the Murder Twins holding Sathia, making sure that mental wall of starlight was still intact. She wasnโ€™t letting their minds anywhere near hers.

โ€œSeamus and Duncan are lordsย of the Fae,โ€ Morven snapped at Bryce. โ€œYou will address them with a femaleโ€™s proper tone of deference.โ€

For fuckโ€™s sake. โ€œYou didnโ€™t answer my question,โ€ Bryce said. Sathiaโ€™s expression had become downright panicked. โ€œYouโ€™re really forcing her into marriage or deporting her to be killed by the Asteri?โ€

Morven twirled a shadow around one of his long, broad fingers. โ€œHer father has agreed it isย in her best interest to wed. And has agreed that should she refuse, she shall be sent back to Lunathion.โ€ He clenched his fist, crushing the shadow within. โ€œFor too long, she has refused any males he has presented to her for marriage. Her fatherโ€™s patience has come to an end, and he has begged me to oversee this matter.โ€

โ€œDad of the year,โ€ Baxian growled.

Bryce grunted her agreement.

Sathiaย said with impressive coldness, โ€œIt is within my rights to refuse any suitor presented to me.โ€

Morven gave her a look dripping with distaste. โ€œIt is, girl. Justย as it is within your fatherโ€™s rights to disown you for failing in your duty to continue the family bloodline.โ€

Bryce grumbled, โ€œSo whatโ€™s the point of giving females refusal rights at all if you punish them for it?โ€

โ€œThis isnโ€™t our problem,โ€ย Flynn grumbled, and even Ruhn whirled to him in shock. โ€œWe didnโ€™t come here to deal with this.โ€

โ€œSo youโ€™re not here to beg asylum as well?โ€ Morven asked, propping his chin on a fist.

โ€œNo,โ€ Hunt growled, stepping forward, wings flaring. โ€œWeโ€™re not.โ€ He glanced to Bryce, motioning her forward again.

Swapping a look with Ruhn that said theyโ€™d deal with the issue of Sathia later, Bryce set asideย her concern and lifted her chin as she stepped to Huntโ€™s side. โ€œIโ€™m here to access the Avallen Archives and the Cave of Princes.โ€

โ€œAccess denied,โ€ Morven said.

โ€œYou mistake me,โ€ Bryce said in that voice that brooked no argument. โ€œI wasnโ€™t asking your permission.โ€ The star on her chest began to glow, illuminating her T-shirt and athletic jacket. โ€œAs a Starborn Princess, no part of Avallen isย denied to me.โ€

โ€œI shall decide who is worthy of accessing my realm,โ€ Morven snarled.

โ€œThe starlight says otherwise,โ€ Bryce said. She drew the Starswordโ€”and the dagger. โ€œAnd so do these.โ€

As if their sheaths had kept their power contained, the naked metal now throbbed against her palm, up her arms, tugging toward each other so violently it took all her strength to keep them apart.

Morven paled.ย Even his shadows receded. โ€œWhat is that in your left hand?โ€ Even the Murder Twins and Sathia had their eyes trained on her, as if they couldnโ€™t look away.

โ€œSome major prophecy fulfillment,โ€ Bryce said, hoping to Hel she was hiding the tremble in her arms from keeping the black blades steady, from ignoring that instinct murmuring to her to bring them together, not keep them apart.

โ€œWhere didย you get that knife?โ€ Morven hissed.

โ€œSo you know what it is, then?โ€ Bryce said.

โ€œYes,โ€ he seethed. โ€œI can feel its power.โ€

โ€œWell, that makes it easier,โ€ Bryce said. She sheathed both weapons. Mercifully, the pulling eased with the action. โ€œLess explaining for me.โ€ She nodded to Morven, and he glowered. โ€œIโ€™ll be in and out of here before you know it.โ€

His shadows returned, darkening the airย behind his antler-throne until it seemed Morven sat before a void. โ€œFemales are forbidden in both the Avallen Archives and the Cave of Princes.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t really care,โ€ Bryce said.

โ€œYou spit on our sacred traditions.โ€

โ€œGet over it.โ€

Morvenโ€™s nostrils flared. โ€œIโ€™ll remind you, girl, that one word from me and the Asteri will have you in their grasp.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™d have to open the mists to them first,โ€ย Bryce countered. โ€œAnd it seems like youโ€™ve workedย reallyย hard not to do thatโ€”or give them a reason to come here at all.โ€

โ€œYou can be removed by guards.โ€

Bryce gestured to Hunt, then Baxian, then the others. โ€œMy own guards might make that difficult.โ€

โ€œThis isย myย kingdomโ€”โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not challenging that. I just want to look through your archives. A few days, then weโ€™ll all be out of your hair.โ€ Sheย pulled the Autumn Kingโ€™s notebook from her jacket. โ€œIโ€™ll even sweeten the deal: Hereโ€™s my sireโ€™s private journal. Well, his most current one. All his recent scheming, written down. Itโ€™s pretty stupid, if you ask me.ย Dear Diary, today I made a list of all my enemies and how I plan to kill them. Itโ€™s so hard being kingโ€”I wish I had a friend!โ€

She grinned as Morvenโ€™s eyes narrowed on the leather-boundย notebook, and she flashed him the first page, where her fatherโ€™s distinctive handwriting was visible. Heโ€™d know it well, as the two old losers communicated mostly through written letters, since Avallen had no computers. โ€œYou let us stay here and itโ€™s yours when we leave.โ€

Morvenโ€™s fingers drummed on the arm of his throne. Fish on a line.

But he said, shadows lightening at last, โ€œYour presenceย here threatens to bring the Asteriโ€™s wrath upon me.โ€

Bryce considered, blinking. โ€œWell, it seems youโ€™ve got no problem harboring fugitives, if youโ€™re letting in Flynnโ€™s parents.โ€

He glared, pure darkness in his eyes.

Bryce went on, โ€œI mean, you could probably make up for Cormacโ€™sย dishonorย by selling us out to the Asteri โ€ฆ but if you hand us over, youโ€™d have to turn in Flynnโ€™s parents and theย other nobles, too. And I doubt itโ€™d win you any points with your own people if you betrayed some fancy-ass nobles.โ€ She crossed her arms. โ€œYouโ€™re in a real pickle, huh?โ€

Morven tapped his booted foot on the ground.

โ€œItโ€™s super hard,โ€ Bryce commiserated, โ€œto try to play both sides, isnโ€™t it?โ€

โ€œI am not playing either side,โ€ Morven said. โ€œI am loyal to the Asteri.โ€

โ€œThen open the mistsโ€”inviteย them here. Letโ€™s have them over for brunch.โ€

Morvenโ€™s silence was damning.

Bryce smiled. โ€œI thought so.โ€ She nodded to Sathia. โ€œOne more thing: she doesnโ€™t marry anyone, and she comes with us.โ€

Sathia gaped at Bryce. But Bryce threw the Fae female a warning look. Bryce had only seen Sathia Flynn from a distance at parties. Usually, the femaleโ€™s hair was dyed varying shades of shining dark brownย or blond. Now her locks were an ordinary light brownโ€”her natural color, perhaps. It was like seeing a glimpse of the real female beneath.

โ€œI cannot allow that,โ€ Morven said. โ€œShe is an unwed female.โ€

โ€œHer brother is here,โ€ Bryce said, nodding to Flynn. โ€œIrresponsible party boy that he is, at least he has the parts that matter to you.โ€

Flynn glared, but Dec elbowed him hard enough that he steppedย up and said, โ€œIโ€™ll, uh, take responsibility for Sathia.โ€

Sathia bristled like an angry cat, but kept her mouth shut.

โ€œNo,โ€ Morven said, a shadow wrapping itself around his wrist like a bracelet. An idle, bored bit of magic. โ€œYou are an unsuitable chaperone, as you have demonstrated time and again.โ€

Hunt gave Bryce a look, and she knew what he was thinking. It was the same thing Ruhn said intoย her mind a heartbeat later:

As much as it kills me to say this โ€ฆ we might have to let this go. Sathia is Flynnโ€™s sister and all, but itโ€™s not our battle to fight.

Bryce subtly shook her head.ย You really want to leave her to Morvenโ€™s mercy?

Trust me, Bryce, Sathia can handle herself.

But Bryce glanced back at Lidia, whoโ€™d been watching all this with a cold, clear focus. Staying completely silentย in that way of hers that made others forget her presence. Even Morven, it seemed, hadnโ€™t noticed who stood in his throne roomโ€”because he now let out a low grunt of surprise at the sight of her.

Yet the Hind met Bryceโ€™s gaze.ย What would you do? Bryce tried to convey.

Lidia seemed to grasp the general direction of her thoughts, because she said quietly, โ€œI never had anyone to fight for me.โ€

Well, that did it.

Bryce opened her mouth, rallying power to her star, but Tharion spoke from behind them.

โ€œIโ€™ll marry Sathia.โ€

It took Hypaxia seven hours, seven minutes, and seven seconds to raise Sigrid.

Ithan barely moved from his stool the entire time Hypaxia stood over the corpse and chanted. Jesiba left, came back with her laptop, and worked for some of the time. She even offered Ithanย some food, which he refused.

He had no appetite. If this didnโ€™t work โ€ฆ

Hypaxiaโ€™s now-hoarse chanting stopped suddenly. โ€œIโ€”โ€

Ithan hadnโ€™t been able to watch as sheโ€™d sewed Sigridโ€™s head back on. Only when sheโ€™d covered the body again had he returned his gaze to the spectacle.

Hypaxia staggered back from the examination table. From the shape under the sheet. Ithan was instantly up, catchingย her smoothly.

โ€œWhat have you done?โ€ Jesiba demanded, laptop shutting with a click.

Ithan set Hypaxia on her feet, and the former witch-queenย looked between them, helpless andโ€”terrified. Out of the corner of his eye, something white shifted.

Ithan turned as the body on the table sat up. As the sheet rippled away, revealing Sigridโ€™s grayish face, her eyes closed. The thick, unforgiving stitchesย in an uneven line along her neck. She still wore her clothes, stiff with old blood.

Stitches popping, Sigrid slowly turned her head.

But her chest โ€ฆ it didnโ€™t rise and fall. She wasnโ€™t breathing.

The lost Fendyr heir opened her eyes. They burned an acid green.

โ€œReaper,โ€ Jesiba breathed.
