Chapter no 15

House of Flame and Shadow (Crescent City, #3)

It took Bryce hours to stop shaking. To chase that cold, deadly wind from her skin. To stop hearing the whispering of her death, the death of all things.

Sheโ€™d never encountered anything like that mask. Nesta had seemed at its mercy, brought back to herself only by Azrielโ€™s list of whoever those people wereโ€”clearly people Nesta cared about.

Through love, all is possible. Even getting freeย of death-masks.

Nesta didnโ€™t speak, staying close beside Azriel. Or maybe he was the one staying close to her. The male didnโ€™t seem to want her farther away than he could grab.

Eventually, Bryce could stand it no longer. โ€œIโ€™m sorry,โ€ she said.

At their silence, she twisted to look back at them. They wore twin expressions of ice.

โ€œIโ€™m โ€ฆ Iโ€™m really fucking sorry,โ€ Bryce said, heart thundering.

โ€œYouโ€™re proving,โ€ Nesta said tightly, โ€œto be more trouble than youโ€™re worth.โ€

โ€œThen why not just kill me?โ€ Bryce snapped.

โ€œBecause whatever you think youโ€™ll find at the end of these tunnels,โ€ Azriel said with lethal quiet, โ€œwhatever warrants the effort of trying to kill us โ€ฆ that has to be something worth seeing.โ€

โ€œYou could leave me here and go ahead yourselves.โ€ She probably shouldnโ€™t haveย suggested that. Too late now.

โ€œThat star on your chest suggests otherwise,โ€ Nesta said, and left Azrielโ€™s side at last to head into the dark. โ€œWeโ€™ve put this much effort into seeing what youโ€™ll do. Might as well see it through.โ€

โ€œEffort?โ€ But even as she spoke, Bryce understood. โ€œYou knew Iโ€™d go through the grate.โ€

โ€œRhysand guessed, yesโ€”and you made him smug as hell when you winnowed. Granted,ย he was surprised that you could winnow at all, but โ€ฆ the bastard sent us after you.โ€ Nesta spoke without turning around, striding with that unfaltering confidence into the gloom. โ€œHe had us make sure there was only one path forward. Make sureย youย believed there was only one path forward, too. So youโ€™d show your handโ€”show us what you truly wanted here.โ€

โ€œYou caused the cave-in.โ€

Nesta shrugged.ย โ€œAzriel caused it. But yes.โ€

โ€œWhyโ€”why do any of this? Why do youย care?โ€

Nesta was quiet for a beat. Azriel didnโ€™t say a word, a wall of silent menace at her back. Then Nesta said, โ€œBecause Iโ€™ve seen that star on your chest before.โ€

โ€œYeah, you said that,โ€ Bryce said. โ€œYour tattooโ€”โ€

โ€œNot my tattoo.โ€

โ€œThen where?โ€ Bryce breathed. If she could get answersโ€”

But Nesta strode ahead again into theย darkness. โ€œNo place good.โ€

After another fitful rest, Azriel and Nesta were both still clearly pissed at Bryce. Rightly so, but wasnโ€™t she allowed to be pissed, too? Theyโ€™d manipulated her every step of the way, watching her like some animal in a zoo, making her think sheโ€™d caused that cave-in when theyโ€™d engineered it themselves โ€ฆ

She shot Azriel a sidelong glare as they walked through theย tunnel. He gave her a cool look in return.

Behind him, the carvings continued, showing Fae frolicking over hills and thriving in ancient-looking walled cities. A scene of growth and change. But Azrielโ€™s eyes slid aheadโ€”and he nodded at where Nesta had stopped.

โ€œWe have a problem,โ€ Nesta murmured as they stepped up to her side.

A chasm stretched before them, Bryceโ€™s starlight glowing in a singleย ray straight across it. Bryce swallowed.

Yeah, they really fucking did.

Ruhn managed to keep his food down, and that was about all he could say for himself as he lay on the filthy, reeking floor and slept.

Maybe it was because he hadnโ€™t managed to truly sleep in days. Maybe it was because Athalar had asked him to do it, and he knew, deep down, that he needed to grow the fuck up. But here heย was. On a familiar-looking mental bridge. Staring at a burning female figure.

Ruhn?ย Lidiaโ€™s voice caught.ย What happened?

โ€œI need to pass along intel.โ€ Each word was cold and clipped.

The flame around Lidia banked until it was nothing but her flowing golden hair, and it killed him. She was so fucking beautiful. It wouldnโ€™t have mattered to him,ย hadnโ€™tย mattered to him during those weeks theyโ€™dย gotten to know each other, but โ€ฆ

She kept ten feet away. He hadnโ€™t bothered with his stars and night. He didnโ€™t care.

โ€œBryce โ€ฆ was trying to go to Hel to ask for help. She didnโ€™t make it there.โ€

Lidiaโ€™s face was impassive. โ€œHow can you possibly know this?โ€

โ€œThe Prince of the Pit paid Hunt a visit. He confirmed that Bryce isnโ€™t with himโ€”or his brothers.

To her credit, Lidia didnโ€™t balk atย the mention of Apollionโ€”she didnโ€™t even question why Hunt was in contact with him. โ€œWhere did she go?โ€

โ€œWe donโ€™t know. The plan was for her to head there to raise their armies and bring them back, but if sheโ€™s not there, weโ€™re shit out of luck.โ€

โ€œWas there โ€ฆ was there a chance that Hel might have actually allied with you?โ€ Disbelief laced every word.

โ€œYeah. There still is.โ€

โ€œWhy tell me anyย of this?โ€

He clenched his jaw. โ€œWe werenโ€™t sure if you or Command had any suspicions about where Bryce went, or if you were hoping sheโ€™d carry out some sort of miracle when she got back here. But we figured you should know that doesnโ€™t seem like an option.โ€

Lidia swore. She looked at her hands, as if she could see whatever plans Ophion might have had crumbling away. โ€œWe werenโ€™t counting on anyย assistance from your sister or Hel, but Iโ€™ll pass along the warning nonetheless.โ€ Her eyes churned with worry. โ€œIs she โ€ฆโ€

Trust Day to get right to the heart of the matter.

โ€œI donโ€™t know.โ€ His flat tone conveyed everything.

She angled her head, and he knew her well enough to know she was considering all heโ€™d told her. The Oracleโ€™s warning.

But Lidia said, โ€œSheโ€™s not dead.โ€ Nothing but pureย confidence filled her words.

โ€œOh yeah?โ€ He couldnโ€™t keep his snide tone in check. โ€œWhat makes you so sure?โ€

She took his nastiness in stride. โ€œRigelus has his mystics hunting for her. He wants her found.โ€

โ€œHe doesnโ€™t know what I know.โ€

โ€œNoโ€”he knowsย moreย than you. He wouldnโ€™t waste the effort if he believed Bryce was dead. Or in Hel. He knows sheโ€™s somewhere else.โ€

Ruhn ignored the kernelย of hope in his chest. โ€œSo what does it mean, then?โ€

โ€œIt means he thinks Bryceโ€™s location might make some difference.โ€ She crossed her arms. โ€œIt means wherever he suspects she might be โ€ฆ it has him worried.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t see how itย couldย make any difference.โ€

โ€œThen you underestimate your sister.โ€

โ€œFuck you,โ€ he snapped.

โ€œRigelus isnโ€™t underestimating Bryce for one moment,โ€ she went on, tone sharpening.ย โ€œOne thousand mystics, Ruhnโ€”all lookingย for her. Do you know how many tasks he usually has them doing? But they are all focused on finding her. That tells me heโ€™s very, very scared.โ€

Ruhn swallowed hard. โ€œWhat would happen if his mystics found her location?โ€

Lidia shook her head, flames twining through the strands. โ€œI donโ€™t know. But he must have some plan in mind.โ€

Ruhn asked, โ€œWhy canโ€™t theyย find her? I thought his mystics could find anything.โ€

โ€œThe universe is vast. Even a thousand mystics need some time to comb every galaxy and star system.โ€

โ€œHow much time?โ€

Her eyes simmered. โ€œNot as much as Bryce likely needsโ€”if she is indeed trying to do the impossible.โ€

โ€œWhich is what?โ€

โ€œFind help.โ€

It was about as much as Ruhn could take. He turned back toward his end of the bridge. โ€œRuhn.โ€

He halted, shuddering at the way she spoke his name, the memory of how it had felt to hear it the first time, after the equinox ball, when sheโ€™d learned who he was.

But that was the problem, wasnโ€™t it? She knew who he was โ€ฆ and he knew whoย sheย was. Knew that while she might be Agent Daybright, sheโ€™d been the Hind for decades before sheโ€™d decided to turn rebel. Had committed plenty of despicableย acts for Sandriel and the Asteri long before sheโ€™d killed the Harpy to save his life. Did changing sides erase the stain?

She said quietly, โ€œIโ€™m doing what I can to help you.โ€

Ruhn looked over a shoulder. Sheโ€™d wrapped her arms around her middle. โ€œI donโ€™t give a fuck what youโ€™re doing. Iโ€™m only here because other peopleโ€™s lives might depend on it.โ€

Hurt flashed in her eyes, and it was kindlingย to his temper. How dare she look that way, look likeย sheย was hurt, when it wasย hisย fucking heartโ€”

โ€œYouโ€™re dead to me,โ€ Ruhn hissed, and vanished.
