It took Bryce hours to stop shaking. To chase that cold, deadly wind from her skin. To stop hearing the whispering of her death, the death of all things.
Sheโd never encountered anything like that mask. Nesta had seemed at its mercy, brought back to herself only by Azrielโs list of whoever those people wereโclearly people Nesta cared about.
Through love, all is possible. Even getting freeย of death-masks.
Nesta didnโt speak, staying close beside Azriel. Or maybe he was the one staying close to her. The male didnโt seem to want her farther away than he could grab.
Eventually, Bryce could stand it no longer. โIโm sorry,โ she said.
At their silence, she twisted to look back at them. They wore twin expressions of ice.
โIโm โฆ Iโm really fucking sorry,โ Bryce said, heart thundering.
โYouโre proving,โ Nesta said tightly, โto be more trouble than youโre worth.โ
โThen why not just kill me?โ Bryce snapped.
โBecause whatever you think youโll find at the end of these tunnels,โ Azriel said with lethal quiet, โwhatever warrants the effort of trying to kill us โฆ that has to be something worth seeing.โ
โYou could leave me here and go ahead yourselves.โ She probably shouldnโt haveย suggested that. Too late now.
โThat star on your chest suggests otherwise,โ Nesta said, and left Azrielโs side at last to head into the dark. โWeโve put this much effort into seeing what youโll do. Might as well see it through.โ
โEffort?โ But even as she spoke, Bryce understood. โYou knew Iโd go through the grate.โ
โRhysand guessed, yesโand you made him smug as hell when you winnowed. Granted,ย he was surprised that you could winnow at all, but โฆ the bastard sent us after you.โ Nesta spoke without turning around, striding with that unfaltering confidence into the gloom. โHe had us make sure there was only one path forward. Make sureย youย believed there was only one path forward, too. So youโd show your handโshow us what you truly wanted here.โ
โYou caused the cave-in.โ
Nesta shrugged.ย โAzriel caused it. But yes.โ
โWhyโwhy do any of this? Why do youย care?โ
Nesta was quiet for a beat. Azriel didnโt say a word, a wall of silent menace at her back. Then Nesta said, โBecause Iโve seen that star on your chest before.โ
โYeah, you said that,โ Bryce said. โYour tattooโโ
โNot my tattoo.โ
โThen where?โ Bryce breathed. If she could get answersโ
But Nesta strode ahead again into theย darkness. โNo place good.โ
After another fitful rest, Azriel and Nesta were both still clearly pissed at Bryce. Rightly so, but wasnโt she allowed to be pissed, too? Theyโd manipulated her every step of the way, watching her like some animal in a zoo, making her think sheโd caused that cave-in when theyโd engineered it themselves โฆ
She shot Azriel a sidelong glare as they walked through theย tunnel. He gave her a cool look in return.
Behind him, the carvings continued, showing Fae frolicking over hills and thriving in ancient-looking walled cities. A scene of growth and change. But Azrielโs eyes slid aheadโand he nodded at where Nesta had stopped.
โWe have a problem,โ Nesta murmured as they stepped up to her side.
A chasm stretched before them, Bryceโs starlight glowing in a singleย ray straight across it. Bryce swallowed.
Yeah, they really fucking did.
Ruhn managed to keep his food down, and that was about all he could say for himself as he lay on the filthy, reeking floor and slept.
Maybe it was because he hadnโt managed to truly sleep in days. Maybe it was because Athalar had asked him to do it, and he knew, deep down, that he needed to grow the fuck up. But here heย was. On a familiar-looking mental bridge. Staring at a burning female figure.
Ruhn?ย Lidiaโs voice caught.ย What happened?
โI need to pass along intel.โ Each word was cold and clipped.
The flame around Lidia banked until it was nothing but her flowing golden hair, and it killed him. She was so fucking beautiful. It wouldnโt have mattered to him,ย hadnโtย mattered to him during those weeks theyโdย gotten to know each other, but โฆ
She kept ten feet away. He hadnโt bothered with his stars and night. He didnโt care.
โBryce โฆ was trying to go to Hel to ask for help. She didnโt make it there.โ
Lidiaโs face was impassive. โHow can you possibly know this?โ
โThe Prince of the Pit paid Hunt a visit. He confirmed that Bryce isnโt with himโor his brothers.
To her credit, Lidia didnโt balk atย the mention of Apollionโshe didnโt even question why Hunt was in contact with him. โWhere did she go?โ
โWe donโt know. The plan was for her to head there to raise their armies and bring them back, but if sheโs not there, weโre shit out of luck.โ
โWas there โฆ was there a chance that Hel might have actually allied with you?โ Disbelief laced every word.
โYeah. There still is.โ
โWhy tell me anyย of this?โ
He clenched his jaw. โWe werenโt sure if you or Command had any suspicions about where Bryce went, or if you were hoping sheโd carry out some sort of miracle when she got back here. But we figured you should know that doesnโt seem like an option.โ
Lidia swore. She looked at her hands, as if she could see whatever plans Ophion might have had crumbling away. โWe werenโt counting on anyย assistance from your sister or Hel, but Iโll pass along the warning nonetheless.โ Her eyes churned with worry. โIs she โฆโ
Trust Day to get right to the heart of the matter.
โI donโt know.โ His flat tone conveyed everything.
She angled her head, and he knew her well enough to know she was considering all heโd told her. The Oracleโs warning.
But Lidia said, โSheโs not dead.โ Nothing but pureย confidence filled her words.
โOh yeah?โ He couldnโt keep his snide tone in check. โWhat makes you so sure?โ
She took his nastiness in stride. โRigelus has his mystics hunting for her. He wants her found.โ
โHe doesnโt know what I know.โ
โNoโhe knowsย moreย than you. He wouldnโt waste the effort if he believed Bryce was dead. Or in Hel. He knows sheโs somewhere else.โ
Ruhn ignored the kernelย of hope in his chest. โSo what does it mean, then?โ
โIt means he thinks Bryceโs location might make some difference.โ She crossed her arms. โIt means wherever he suspects she might be โฆ it has him worried.โ
โI donโt see how itย couldย make any difference.โ
โThen you underestimate your sister.โ
โFuck you,โ he snapped.
โRigelus isnโt underestimating Bryce for one moment,โ she went on, tone sharpening.ย โOne thousand mystics, Ruhnโall lookingย for her. Do you know how many tasks he usually has them doing? But they are all focused on finding her. That tells me heโs very, very scared.โ
Ruhn swallowed hard. โWhat would happen if his mystics found her location?โ
Lidia shook her head, flames twining through the strands. โI donโt know. But he must have some plan in mind.โ
Ruhn asked, โWhy canโt theyย find her? I thought his mystics could find anything.โ
โThe universe is vast. Even a thousand mystics need some time to comb every galaxy and star system.โ
โHow much time?โ
Her eyes simmered. โNot as much as Bryce likely needsโif she is indeed trying to do the impossible.โ
โWhich is what?โ
โFind help.โ
It was about as much as Ruhn could take. He turned back toward his end of the bridge. โRuhn.โ
He halted, shuddering at the way she spoke his name, the memory of how it had felt to hear it the first time, after the equinox ball, when sheโd learned who he was.
But that was the problem, wasnโt it? She knew who he was โฆ and he knew whoย sheย was. Knew that while she might be Agent Daybright, sheโd been the Hind for decades before sheโd decided to turn rebel. Had committed plenty of despicableย acts for Sandriel and the Asteri long before sheโd killed the Harpy to save his life. Did changing sides erase the stain?
She said quietly, โIโm doing what I can to help you.โ
Ruhn looked over a shoulder. Sheโd wrapped her arms around her middle. โI donโt give a fuck what youโre doing. Iโm only here because other peopleโs lives might depend on it.โ
Hurt flashed in her eyes, and it was kindlingย to his temper. How dare she look that way, look likeย sheย was hurt, when it wasย hisย fucking heartโ
โYouโre dead to me,โ Ruhn hissed, and vanished.
